  • Knife attacks happen fast and sometimes with little time to react. Too often do I see "knife defense" techniques for disarming if someone attacks you in a specific manner. We should instead be focused on how to control the attacking arm and the attacker before we active our John Wick techniques...

I was homeless for 2 1/2 years(I was an addict for over 11 years) and in May of 2021, I was stabbed 7 times by another homeless guy who robbed me after I gave him food and a cigarette. He had planned to ask me for those things to get my guard down. I fought him, neither of us got the upper hand, but we both fell on the ground at one point and he stabbed me over and over. Once in the arm, 3 times in the right knee, and 3 times in the back. Long story short, he was caught 5 mins after he took off and got 8 years in prison. He only did a lil over 2 years tho and got out in September 2023. 🤷I got clean shortly afterwards. I've been clean awhile now and have a job, a house, and a truck, so besides being stabbed, I think I came out of it better.

I am - or I was - a martial arts instructor, and I can tell you that that advice is baloney for the simple reason that in a real life situation of this kind, it is almost always impossible to run away. First of all, your attacker is highly unlikely to be alone, and his buddies will be standing beside you, or behind you, preventing you from making a run for it. Second, attacks usually happen in places like bars, buses, crowded dance clubs, where you are surrounded by obstacles like chairs, tables, pillars, other people etc. You are unlikely to get more than a couple of yards before your getaway is blocked and attacker stabs you in the back. And third, if your attacker already has a knife in his hand, he's going to stab you as soon as you make a move to escape. It only takes a fraction of a second - faster than it takes for a person standing still to accelerate and run from the scene. Therefore, running from a knife attacker is not a good idea UNLESS you're facing a lone attacker, AND you are super fit and good at running, AND you have a clear escape route. Otherwise, your best option is to kick your opponent in the lower abdomen with as much force as you can muster. A kick to the nuts is unlikely to be effective (unless your attacker is standing in front of you with his legs apart, which would be very unlikely). Your kick needs to be powerful enough to propel him backwards (kicks to the nuts tend to be upwards rather than forward), as far away from you as possible.

He wants to seriously harm you for all intents, and he's using all that energy to repeatedly stab, adrenaline. As a defender- the human brain cannot process and is caught off guard by the shock and intensity of the violence, unless you are also as aggressive as the attacker, it will be hard to defend. Thus, you have to deescalate first, run, call the cops, never let yourself be backed into a corner, and wait for an opening. You could also use a knife, but chances are you'd end up also injured, attacker might die or escape, but that's just not an option. Seen this one video with 2 groups of teenagers threatening each other, one guy has a knife and another guy keeps walking at him and trying to look cool for his friends. Guy quickly jabs it into the fronting guys throat, took less than a second, little time to react. Guy kinda keeps walking for a second, as the other people involved kinda keep moving away. Then he stops, grabs his throat, feels the massive amount of blood pouring out and puts his hand on his hip like "well dann he got me." Seconds later he's collapsed in a pool of his blood. Died on the scene. Something about the wsy the gravity of the situation suddenly hit him and his body language when 10 seconds ago he was acting all tough really stuck with me.

Almost lost my finger due to a glass bong…. I smoked in my garage in the dark and there’s two big support pillars. I walked past the first one no issue, thought about flicking the lighter to see the second pole but was like “I’m passing it right now”
My head bonked SUPER hard on it and left me totally dazed and really messed up just from hitting my head. Then I grabbed the door and felt wetness all over my hand and on my clothes. I looked down and there was just blood EVERYWHERE. I couldn’t feel it at ALL. But it was excruciating while healing for 3 weeks. Took Luke 3 months to fully heal and I’ve lost a lot of movement from it. There’s a scar making it look like I have 4 knuckle areas. There’s a crease in between my two actual knuckle creases.
It was because I was holding the bong, my head hit, then my bong hand hit the pole and the bowl just shattered…. Tempered glass too….. literally cut me like butter.
My BONE prevented my finger tip from coming OFF. And I was stupid and never went to the hospital. I used fucking gauze and MASKING tape which doesn’t breath….. when I woke up my finger was macerated and my skin was all dying. A completely wrinkly white finger.
The worst pain was my finger drying out actually….. literally felt like a painful itch that went DEEP into my bone.
Always use actual medical supplies if you can. It took 3-5 days for my fingers skin to get “normal” but then another week of shedding the top dead layers.
I now smoke with the lights on.

My dad was in the military and an instructor of combat, martial arts, not sports. Most of the time he filled my head with how and why to avoid danger at all costs, situational awareness and then physical and technical training. When we got to blades, he started with "avoid at all costs" again, then "if you can't avoid it, understand you'll get cut. What you need to do and the only thing you can do is do your best to get cut as least as possible and hopefully avoid death." And then he started showing me techniques and tactics of how to deal with the knife. But since then, growing up, discovering martial arts sports and seing all the drills and katas.... I was and still am constantly amazed at how far off people have gone off when it comes to self defense essence of martial arts. In my oppinion, many martial arts sports teachers should be prohibited from teaching "self defense" woo-woo stuff, until they are properly taught themselves because they put people's lives at risk. "here, learn this secret technique and you'll defeat an attacker armed with a knife!" Or whatever. Then the students train and develop the belief that with their newly aquired magic trick, they're now untouchable on the street... Act that way against someone who means business or is simply a no bs thug or gangster. He will look at you and maybe ask wth you're trying to do and slap, punch, stab you with the other hand or limbs available. Actually saw a video of a Bjj guy unfortunately dying like that in a parking lot. He took down his attacker beautifully, did a splendid arm bar and then waited for the attacker to tap, because that's what they do in martial arts sports. So the attacker took the pain, grabbed a knife from his pocket with the free hand and while locked in that arm bar, stabbed the bjj guy multiple times in the abdomen and chest, then got free and ran away. In the martial art, the original technique, you follow through and brake the arm, you don't wait around for a tap or a referee count or a towel drop.

@@ArkhsI live in NYC and over the course of the 90's and early 2000's have had knives pulled on me quite a times. Luckily it was never close like this and the intention wasn't an attack but a threat.
One time I was like 13 and it was teenagers (17-19 range) trying to rob me. They ran away (were chased) when some adults came nearby. This wasn't even a bad neighborhood just some unsavory people who moved there.
Another time I was an older teenager and a guy from the neighborhood walked by blackout drunk with his girlfriend then pulled out a knife swinging it around threatening to stab us because he thought we said something to her. Apparently he confused us with another group who actually said something to her. We were able to all keep a good distance from him and she was able to deescalate the situation. When I ran into him a few days later he apologized.
A few other situations not to different.
Some advice is stay out of bad neighborhoods. Don't walk around late at night especially in cities. Don't walk around or hangout areas where you will run into people who are intoxicated. Stay away from metros in late hours. Honestly the saying "don't do drugs" and "don't drink" is really good life advice I wish I had taken when I was younger. You will avoid a lot of people who may try to harm you this way. Sleep at night, wake up in the morning and spend your free time with lived ones and friends.

Just like with a gun, this shows proof that you could die at ANY moment.

One time I walked around a corner with my friends late at night and saw a guy ready to attack someone and I went over and said that there was no need for violence. The guy about to attack was a big tough looking guy and the other guy was a drunk, overweight guy that looked pretty harmless. The big tough guy turned around to me immediately taking out a big knife, ready to stab me. Can't remember what he said but I was instantly de-escalating the situation so I wouldn't get stabbed, saying, none of my business man, I'll just be walking along. Wish I had of learned my lesson from that but stupidly intervened on more than one occasion when I was younger until it nearly got me killed another time and it was not really even an intervention that time, more just saying something to a girl who was acting frightened and depressed in a nightclub and I mentioned she should keep away from dangerous people and keep herself safe. I had no idea who she was with or what her situation was. It's funny when people talk about how nobody intervenes when they look at videos of someone getting attacked. Best way to intervene is to get away and mention it to a cop, or if you have a big group of friends try to de-escalate while keep yourself as safe as possible (but the first method is best). Amazing how violent people become very calm when they see there is a big group of people that could potentially harm them more than they want to harm others. But, not always the case when someone is extremely violent. Those people don't care.
Anyway, on that first occasion I mentioned the big guy seemed to leave the drunk harmless guy alone and walked away after we did, but I still mentioned it to a cop we saw a couple of streets away. I've gotten away from dodgy areas now and I'm doing a lot better in life. Get away from chaos if you can. Anything is better.

Could you explain what happened after telling that to the girl in the club?
