The Mazda MX-5 convertible is renowned for being one of the best sports cars money can buy, but its fourth-generation, 'ND' model is about to turn seven years old, so how does Mazda go about making it better? Well, the MY22 MX-5 has an ace up its sleeve: Kinetic Posture Control. Does KPC deliver on its promise of an improved drive, though?
Justin Hilliard spent some time in the MY21 ND and the MY22 ND back to back, with the aim of figuring out if the Japanese sports car's new tech improvement has in fact made an excellent sports car even better.
Aside from the fact Mazda Australia has dumped the 1.5L four-cylinder base engine, and therefore managed to bump the prices up significantly, there is no doubt the new 2.0-litre naturally aspirated Roadster soft-top and RF hardtop convertible models are terrific fun to drive - whether you choose the manual gearbox or the automatic transmission.

You mention that the interior of the car is "not a tech fest" - That is one of it's most attractive features - don't need all the technology, only to have it fail, needing expensive diagnosis and repair. Just the basic driving experience is what I am after. I would prefer that the ND did not have the center display screen - it seems to be an afterthought, popping up out of nowhere.
We have an NB and it has just the right amount of technology (none).
Not much trunk space? - It's a sports car, not a minivan, just enough space for a couple of folding lawn chairs and a picnic basket.
Our NB is stored for 6 months of the year (upstate NY) and every April, when we retrieve it from storage, it is like getting a new car all over again.
Love it, love it, love it.
    Good review.

I have a 20 year old Mercedes SLK and have always been curious to try a Miata to see how different it is. I question almost daily whether I initially should have gone with the Mazda because of some pretty serious reliability hiccups I've had with the SLK.
Also, great job with the video. I love the shots showing how gorgeous Australia is. I hope all of you at CarsGuide are keeping safe during the insane flooding I've been hearing about.

I wanted a Porsche Boxster S when I was shopping out the Miata 10 years ago. I looked at the SLK (320 and 350), Lexus SC, Toyobaru, Camaro, Mustang, etc. They were all trash compared to the Miata. I test drove them all, and the NC Miata was the obvious answer.

I've had the Mk1 and the NC 2ltr roadster. Power and substantially suspension upgraded, though slightly overlarge for the MX5 spirit and the first to step away from the original Elan homage which caused some negative reaction - I believe in practice it remains the best of them all. Funny that the NC has two afterthought cup holders when the NC bizarrely had four cupholders in a 2 seater car! The 'Coke bottle' reimagining of the MX5 struggles in the flesh...especially in coupe form as the car is too short to carry it off. Just goes to show really - Colin Chapman got the look right - first time!

Good job. I think in the practicality section you may have missed the “secret” glove compartment behind the seat. I think the soft top has two. Also, unrelated, I like Australia’s license plates. They don’t take away from the good looks of the front grill. North American plates are butt ugly.

It's such a shame that roads in VIC are not meant for these small fun sports cars. With the number of pot holes in on the regional roads ( freeways! and other major roads above 80kmphs ) it's hard to just relax and enjoy the drive. You have to be constantly on alert watching for the next pot hole.
What a shame VIC government. They don't have money to fix our great roads.

In my opinion, while I like the look of the RF, if you're going to get a convertible then, get a convertible. And, I'd love to see Mazda get rid of the infotainment unit entirely. It has no place in this type of car.

I own a 2016 soft top. Can't say I've ever warmed up to the hard top version; the wind buffeting is way too pronounced, and whilst it looks slick from the side, the rear profile is downright ugly. Soft top all the way for me.

I'm really tired of Mazda's naming convention for regular technology that's been around in other cars for decades. A lot of cars can reduce speed from certain wheels as well as increase speed on certain wheels to assist with cornering. Soon, Mazda will introduce something that's been around, such as rear wheel steering, that is already in some cars, and call it some other weird names.

    • @BN99239
      @BN99239 2 роки тому

@@deasystems Yes, an LSD also does this already. Depending on how it is programmed it can be a very slight or very noticeable effect.
Some of the performance EVs already have this feature baked in since there is a motor on each of the wheels, which can control torque and braking power independently to achieve the same effect. What Mazda calls KPC is just another word for torque vectoring. It's in many cars, including Porsche Torque Vectoring. I've had a Mazda 6 and currently drive an ND2 Miata, so I love Mazda. I just hate that they keep adding "new" features to their car and calling it different things when these things already exist for many years.

@@BN99239 : "What Mazda calls KPC is just another word for torque vectoring"
An LSD provides neither torque vectoring nor KPC. Also, torque vectoring is not the same thing as KPC: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque_vectoring
Mazda's engineers have been quite creative and clever here.
