More videos with your suggestions for an outdoor shower, privy, beds, picnic table, food storage, or anything else that might be useful for a semi-permanent campsite for homeless people would be appreciated. Your demonstrations are some of the best I have seen on UA-cam. I have gotten other ideas from other videos, but you may have better designs.
I just wanted to thank you. My daughter, who is 4 and I got enjoy a great day outside today. We rigged up a teepee in a little under a hour. It was great to see her smile and play in it. Thanks for the great idea. BTW cost for all materials brand new were $43 which is a pretty cheap
Caveman.. If you watch again with your questions in mind I think the video will answer them. You don't need to cut.. just fold Snap clips can be found online but I don't have a direct link. The teepee is very easy.. some make it hard because they think a teepee has to be hard. Scribe the semicircle, Put clips on the scribed line, raise the center point and stake the clips. That's all there is to it! Hope that Helps
James.. It's awesome that you and your lil girl enjoyed the bush together.. We need to pass the knowledge to our youth.. lest it be forgotten.. Great work!!
Thank you for mentioning that the cover needs to be 2x as long as it is wide early on. Many people try to drape their covers in ways that could easily be improved upon and make their shelter look and work much better. Ditto for those clips. I've wasted effort on just about every other way especially with grommets.
Hi David, Thank you for the kind reply. I have asked my friends to look for a 4 meter x 8 meter polyester tarp. I have suggested they cut 12 poles that are 5 meters long. That would allow them to build a shelter that has a circular floor 4 meters in diameter and with a 4 meter high ceiling. You can see UA-cam videos of the disaster in January in Teresopolis. The early aid has vanished, and the government is leaving people without food or shelter 4 months later.
You are so right Dave, about the snap clips. Also, I just used your plans on a back pack trip into the forrest and my tee pee was the bomb. Can even have a small fire inside. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the comment WeartheCrown Of course you don't need artificaial materials to make a teepee.. But because of the weight.. some people carry tarps. And some people like teepees. It's a nice combination at times..
@paparedwood The way that we do if we use a floor is to tie the florring on the upright poles (about 2" above ground level) BEFORE we put the walls on. I suppose you could do it after.. but it's a bit harder to work. HTH..
I looked in even truck stops, but did not find the good yellow snap clips. However I did find some grey ones shaped like a little shark. They seem to be sturdier then the black ones and they bite the tarp really well. They might be a decent alternative. Also, if you decide to sew two tarps together, use some backing cloth or the tarp may rip right where it is sewn. Think about it. If you only sew the tarp you have created a perforation much like the tear off pieces on bill statements.
Of those which I have seen, this is the most practical and usable teepee video, . . . However, using pi x diameter = circumference (62' 9" half a tarp, flat) divided by 2 = actual available teepee cir (31' 4"); and, actual cir divided by pi = diameter (10'); and "c"squared (width of the tarp) minus "a" square (the floor radius of 5') = "b" squared, or ground center-line to the peak, (100 - 25 = 75, then sqrt of 75, and the teepee is about 8' and 8" high-and, for many situations, a good size
Good idea. Have you tried laying this out with a rectangular or square base? I am playing with it and can get a 7 by 9 rectangle. What is the diameter of the circular base of your layout?
@taylormorris1993 That would be just about perfect.. and is what we generally use for a 10X20 tarp. It gives you about 1 foot outside the top all around. HTH
@mogges1 My mind has been going since I read this.. and I think you can set up the teepee in this fashion. What you would need to do is tie the top end together and fold it over.. then ti it to the poles. Then simply hook the grommets on the bottom to the outside poles. Might sag a bit in larger models.. but I think it's conceivable.
I check the Harbor Freight here in Lynchburg at least every other week. The one here and in Salem doesn't have them. I've asked them to get them and they workers there look at me as though I have a small dog wearing a top hat and a monocle glued to my forehead. I've pretty much given up on the tarp aspect of this project and have began to sew some canvas together and waterproof it with Camp Dry to get it done. Thanks anyway.
I think every one should build at least one Tipi in their life. I've made two and posted my videos and plan on posting instructional videos soon. One can't find a better survival shelter for cold weather. I like tarp but I find Tyvek home rap is my favorite, its a little cheaper if you don't mind buying bulk. I think my next few builds will be from clear plastic though. Easy to build with duct tape and PVC poles. My Tyvek is a 21ft Tipi with bamboo poles. Its very lightweight making it fast and easy to put up but its hard to haul and it don't like the wind. I can park my truck in it so its not practical except for groups.
@kyletango I'm not sure 3-5% is accurate.. but they are a bit smaller. For example.. my "10X10" is actually 9.75X9.75 (1.5" on each side for a hem). The difference in size doesn't make any difference.. except in the height of the poles. The floor size would change negligibly.. but it's not that critical. As ROn Hood says, "Close enough, good enough."
@phillipgaley And which, looks like it makes sense too, inthat, if you stand the 10' tarp width, up vertical at a stake-down point, and moving the tarp top inward to the teepee apex or over the floor center, it looks like in diagonal placement, then, you'll lose a little over a foot of height, . . .
I've never seen tarp clips before. I totally get it, though! I can imagine using a rock and string to do the same basic thing. This tipi may not be "authentic", but I see where it's going and look forward to making something similar myself soon. Looking for part 2 to learn more...
Why not take two 10' X 10' tarps and some 3/4" stock / furring strips and either sandwich or overlap the tarps and screw the wood together to make a 10' X 20' (Roughly) tarp? You'll know where the center is and if you fold the tarp in half before covering the framework it should aid you in the handling of the tarp. Have a Great Day and Happy Holidays
@dabrownone You have good ideas! Cut it rounded is the way I do it.. but I suppose that you could cut it on angles between 6 points.. I think it would work. Try it and let us know!
I'm starting see that a tarp is the most versatile survival gear one can have. Now I'm looking at canvas the thing I'm woundering about on canvas is the weight of one.i'm thinking about a 6 foot by 8 foot. canvas tarp. that would I think be enough room for at leat 2 people and maybe build a fire in side.
I had this exact idea yesterday, before seeing any videos on it, then found this morning! My idea was a little different, more of a triangle-base pyramid. Have you tried that? Seems like it would work well with a 10X20 tarp
David I have been thinking about different way to set this up.I seen a canvas tent set up with the poles on the out side like a cowboy range tent.I have look at buying a range tent But LORD are they expensive and the weight of those.gees.How could i set a poly tarp up were the Poles are on the out side
David, Where did you find the 20'x10' tarp? I've checked Walmart, K-mart, Lowes, Home Depot, Harbor Freight, and Tractor Supply and none have 20x10 tarps nor any other with similar dimensional ratios. Any help will be appreciated.
hey man I agree with what you are saying and I understand what you are saying. The videos do not give you much detail as to WHAT he ACTUALLY doing but instead of him talking. I would like to see this again with a stand off veiw to see what he is actually doing...
Look there see he is doing it without any cutting, the orginal Tipi made by native american was alot simpler it acually had three componet the outer skin, the ground cloth, and the ozon, the ground cloth that went 4 to 6 feet up the side and the Ozane was water proof the outer skin was not, now to make the outer skin sew the skins together to the width and length you need, like if you have two 10 feet long tarp and you want a 20 foot tipi then get two and sew them together so you have 20 feet with and you do the same with the length that is where you get the old saying its a 4 skin tipi or 8 skin so on and so on stake the skin down so its tight find the center like in the video do the marking make it 1 inch longer cut on the line fold the 1 inch over for a pretty seam if you want sew rock or marble in the seam so you can stake it down like the native use to do.
Sorry, I just dont get it and my head hurts from watching the video so many times. Please put your camera out so that everyone can SEE what you are doing. Explaining it does not help unless we are able to see what your talking about. Great idea, terribly presented.
Exactly. The closeup shots took away any instructional value to this film, you may as well have sat in your dinning room table and made this instructional video. I intend this as constructive in the hopes you will do it again sometime with wider camera angle. Thanks for the effort in any case.

That...sounds...BRILLIANT!! Just goes to prove that no obstacle can't be overcome once we set our minds to it! Thumbs WAAAY up for that one!

Using a piece of charcoal to scribe the lines will not leave permanent marks on your tarp. Just a suggestion....

We had a SMALL fire in the center of ours.. but we had to keep the front flap open a bit for airflow...

Harbor Freight has them. We have an outlet store close to us and I saw one there.
Thanks for the great vid! Very informative and helpful. Keep them coming!!
I am certain you could sew two tarps together to get the large size you need. Just be sure to use seam sealer on all the threads.

You would need the same amount as you have poles. One for each point. You could, of course, Add more in between if you like.

Yes.. Part 2 is right on the right on my screen right now.. and is a featured video
Harbor Freight sales a 15 ft. 2'' x 19 ft. 6'' Reflective Heavy Duty Silver Tarp for $40. Thought about getting one of these and just cutting it.
@TheGrayman1234
That will definitely work!

David, most tarps are 3 to 5% smaller than there stated size. Does this make a difference when your measuring?
Could you build a fire inside if you wanted to. I am thinking of trying this in the winter, and I want to know if it is safe to have a fire inside?
Is there a part 2 to this? (lashing poles and placing tarp to show finished tipi)
That's not a bad idea Eielson..
Perhaps I will try that at a future date :)
@kyletango Google Byers' Hurricane Snaps these are the only type of "Snap clips" that I could find but they look just like what he had in the video.
David, Where did you find the 20'x10' tarp? I've checked Walmart, K-mart, Lowes, Home Depot, Harbor Freight, and Tractor Supply and none have 20x10 tarps nor any other with similar dimensional ratios. Any help will be appreciated.
I've never had any trouble with the croc clips.

I did. Nothing with compatible measurements.
