Nice to see a video with both tracks up the hill. Dad took a cabride down the hill in 89 (as grandpa is retired DMIR conductor) and made an hour long presentation out of it.
Been up there 6 or 7 times before the CN take-over Dave. Now I wish I had gone more times. CN has destroyed that railroad, just as they did to the B&LE. Can never get enough of the DM&IR.
Most of the traffic is gone now! I think there is only one train a day on the line. B&P took the Armco Steel traffic away from B&LE. There are no longer coal runs, and I think the interchange with the n&w-NS at Gerard is all but non-existent. The shops where closed at Butler, and most of the locomotives are gone. It’s a shame! Went I filmed them in the 80's early 90's, we sometimes got 6 trains in one day. Big difference to today...
DM&IR used both tracks down the hill until the CN takeover. The other track was there but not used until about 2007(?). Incidently the track you filmed this train on is the one that was removed.
I think the second track was gone when we went back the following year. I bet that was a nice cab ride. Its a great view of Duluth Harbor and ore docks coming down that hill. Thanks for watching...
Me toNicholas! Really sorry to see another railroad bit the dust. I still may go back, just to see what has happened over the years up there. Thanks for watching...
irishrebel1798 it’s all about the track. Since the DM&IR ran through extensive swamp and rocky terrain the grade was typically elevated about 10 feet or so. Snow in turn doesn’t pile up on the tracks. All the snow they does get piled up can be cleared by just running through it. In the rock cuts along the Iron Range sub occasionally a Jordan spreader was called to bust through.
You mentioned the B&LE... I live about an hour or so away from there (I'm from the Cleveland area to Conneaut) and I love B&LE, even though I have caught them once on multiple attempt. Anyways, how did CN "destroy" B&LE? What were the differences between before and after CN took them over?
I was up at Grand Marais for the North House Unplugged event just a couple of weeks ago and caught a couple of empties at Waldo plus two more at this location on Proctor Hill. I wish I could get a stone train but haven't been able to yet.
Sure miss the D M &IR. Thanks for posting.

That's a good guestion! I don't really know, and not sure if they where ever installed after the rebuild program. Thanks for watching...
Good catch. They sure are putting up a good fight and sound good doing it!

Listen to that SDM, love the burbling of a non-turbo EMD. Sweet music.

CAN never wanted the B&LE, they were forced to take it to get the DAM&IR.

They work the guts out. Love it! Thanks for watching...
