I knew this man who worked on the Pennsy back in the day and he told me about the heaviest train he was on in his career pulling a Million tons of ore up Horseshoe Curve with 4 lead engines, 4 mid-train helpers, and 4 trailing units. That would have been a sight to see.
Oh wow, SD28's! Another EMD model that I didn't know about until a year or so ago! I never even knew SD28's even existed until I read a Trains magazine! Great shots!
Great sounding locomotives! I was on the property about a month ago and saw the 1236, wearing a very nice coat of paint - hope she stays around for a lot longer.
Was Luckyone! It was! You might have gotten your heart broken if you read the caption. Within a year after this clip, the caboose was in a collision with one of the SD28, and both where a total loss. That wasn't just an ordinary caboose either. It was set up special as a cab control car. The crew could opperate the train backwards from the cab to avoid turning the train for the return trip. Thanks for watching...
Great video, love that screaming Detroit Diesel sound. I have never seen that type of rail car before, but then I don't live in an area where the railroads haul ore. To bad about the loss of one of the engines and the caboose. Keep up the good work!
Thank Curt. Glad you enjoyed it. Ore railroads sure were neat. But things have even changed up there as well. Noting stays the same. Thanks for watching...
So thats gotta be rough on the traction motors? Probably gotta be in 8 to get up the grade? Love trains, especially the old hood units, but my knowledge is limited.
When you say run 8 is that the highest power setting you have on the engine? when the trains first starts do you push the throttle to the power setting you will be running at or do you come up to speed one setting at a time. (on a ship they ring up 20 kts and that is what we set the throttle at and let it come up to speed as the computer lets it.
Not sure where they are now Mark. I know they all have been retired. Like you, I hope a least a few of them were saved. That is a rare model. Thanks for watching..
The description says "Crank up your speakers" but if I do that my 14 year old kitteh would go berzerk. I'll tell you why ... The audio output from my PC goes to my Marantz stereo receiver (an old one but still rocks). I have a pair of 39" tall Jensen Quadraxials. Each speaker cabinet has a pair of 5" midrange, a supertweeter and a 15" Boss Subwoofer (original woofers blew and had to be replaced lol). They thump the walls and rattle the windows. Bwahahaha! >:-)
My Name Thats great!!! LOL. Probably sounds like those SD28's are running throught the house!I bet it even got the neighbors attention. Thanks for watching, I mean listening...
jackmp294.5™ Yes they do. Right through the living room. LOL! But my house is very well insulated. I can crank up my music then step out onto the front porch and hardly hear it.
Ah, the sound of the legendary EMD 2 stroke diesels. Distinctive sound when compared to the ALCO engine. The old truck detroit diesels look much like the EMD, just a whole lot smaller.
You are correct Stephen. 4 to Reseve Mining, 2 to Columbus & Greenville. The 6 that went to Korea where actually SDP28's. Which must have been pretty neat to see with steam generators, and on passenger trains. Thanks for watching... Jack
please lite weight crap, I run my Kenwood 1000 watt per channel receiver then into a peavey mixer board into peavey pre amp controller into a peavey 4000 watt stage amp into 8 marshal stacks
I have to come back and watch this every so often. The sound is incredible.
That is it. I need to watch it every now and then myself. LOL Can't beat it...
Oh... yes it is😂

Believe it or not but there was also SD9’s
567's and ore jimmies on jointed rail- haven't heard that sound since the '70's!
Thank you so much for the video it reminds me of my grandpa
Glad you enjoyed it, and bringing back memories. Thanks for watching...
i love it when some ppl say " it sounds like a freight train locomotive " have never heard one .
The climb is very heavy!! The leslie horn also is fantastic!!!
Beautiful soothing sound of 567 engines.
Nice to see a caboose bring up the rear
Great sounding locomotives! I was on the property about a month ago and saw the 1236, wearing a very nice coat of paint - hope she stays around for a lot longer.
Only 12 built by EMD and here's three of them together!

Awesome video. Thanks for posting this.
Good info!
Thank you..that ecko from upper Delaware River during E L days when I was little
Fantastic sound for sure. Thanks for watching...

Loved seeing the caboose! That must have been a heavy load of ore.
I haven't seen an in service caboose in years
Seeing a working caboose is damn near like trying to find a dodo bird...
That it is!!! LOL
Great 567 sound Jack, thanks for sharing and this one's going in favorites.
Sounds like a thrashing machine!
nice! i read about these in my diesel spotters guide! great video!!
I missed an opportunity to check these guys out last year. Really wish I had since the operation has been idled
Just plain awesome.....
Wheeling and Lake Erie has a couple of these
Great video, even greater description
I saw the unit IC had often on the Peoria district. Unique gal.
So thats gotta be rough on the traction motors? Probably gotta be in 8 to get up the grade? Love trains, especially the old hood units, but my knowledge is limited.
Even the tracks look heavy duty. Are the tracks designed for this kind of load?
I'm guessing so. I'm pretty sure some areas need to be reinforced if the area is soft or swampy.
Very nice, those loco's were working very hard
Awesome caboose!!
Wow, this is incredible! They sounds just like any other EMD in notch 8!
They do sound fantastic. Especially with headphones on, and the sound turned up. Thanks for watching...
1:40-A CABOOSE! YAHOOOO!
So sad. Great video.
These units are a leftover from Reserve Mining. They are still gracing the Rails.
Great video, and such a tragic loss
Now we're talking! I'm guessing the ground was shaking a wee bit when these went by!
Diesel's real power.........
Wow. Bend over, here comes the elephant....
Love it!!👍👍
THESE LOCOMOTIVES SOUND FUCKEN TUFF ! THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FUCKEN BRUTAL !
This is why America's trains are best.
Really?
What a battle,love it,.
Music to my ears!
Aaahhh built to be working
Northshore mining. About 100 miles from where I live.
As a computer technician, EMD means Electromagnetic Discharge.
In this case it stands for Electro-Motive Divsion of GM
I've been to Beaver Bay and all the way up the north shore a ton of times so this was cool to watch knowing it was somewhere that I've been to.
Thats looks very steep. I like it steep
I love The Leslie Horn!
Amazing, great sound!
Sometimes them trains be looking scary
All units are ex Reserve Mining.

Depending on the grade and how heavy the train is he can start in Run 1,2,3 or 4. Only then once the amperage settles down you can increase the power.
John Moore
If you did that and just went straight to the 8th notch from idle you break knuckles and rip out draw bars.
Awsome Jack
How the hell can they handle that without burning out traction motors
them ballasts be very heavy
That they are.
What's up with the ditch lights not being lit? Any idea?
What shame about what happened to the caboose the next year :(
It was smart to make it a cab control car as well as a caboose.
Nice video Jack.
Are these locos still around? if not hopefully due to their rarity they've been put in a museum.
Not sure where they are now Mark. I know they all have been retired. Like you, I hope a least a few of them were saved. That is a rare model. Thanks for watching..
jackmp294.5™ jack..... What does notch 8 mean?
“Notch 8” is Run 8, the top power setting
Mark Huett I believe one is on display at the Illinois Railroad Museum
@@Shinyarc the one in Union? I sure as hell hope so! Union is due North of me c:
awesome
Nice 👍👍
ist it possible
that the third engine is an ex Rock Island?
The third engine also appears not to be an SD28, but rather its predecessor, the SD18.
The description says "Crank up your speakers" but if I do that my 14 year old kitteh would go berzerk.
I'll tell you why ...

i ran this through my mid 80's rca dimensia stereo and i quite enjoyed the bass notes :)
I bet that sounded good! My speakers arn't very big, but it will rattle the shelves in the house. LOL. Thanks for watching, and listening...
What model of Marantz do you have???,2325,,,2330,,, 4400,,,, 4370??? or other ??
Any idea where this was filmed?
In northern Minnesota. Just off lake Superior near Beaver Bay.
Sounds just like the sd7,sd9
Do they still have these?
No they don't MR. There was only six built, and have no idea where they landed up when they were retired. Thanks for watching...
North Shore Mining Company?
Ah, the sound of the legendary EMD 2 stroke diesels. Distinctive sound when compared to the ALCO engine. The old truck detroit diesels look much like the EMD, just a whole lot smaller.
Nice
grade looks to be 3-4%
Not sure what it is, but it sure is pretty steep. Thanks for watching...
@@1jackdk Well get out there with a yards stick and figure it out!!
Shucks. My Ford Ranger could do that when I fill it up with premium
nice
Diesel electric amazing
i think 12 were made 6 went to korea, why 6 in the states.
You are correct Stephen. 4 to Reseve Mining, 2 to Columbus & Greenville. The 6 that went to Korea where actually SDP28's. Which must have been pretty neat to see with steam generators, and on passenger trains. Thanks for watching... Jack
My cat would too she is very skittish
Listen to those horse!
Just gotta love it! Sure do miss that sound. Almost impossible to find now a days. Thanks for watching...
Hauling coal. One heavy train.
No, hauling iron ore or iron ore concentrate. Coal would be a whole lot lighter!
Doesn't sound as good as British hst, when a pax man bake bra roars past
please lite weight crap, I run my Kenwood 1000 watt per channel receiver then into a peavey mixer board into peavey pre amp controller into a peavey 4000 watt stage amp into 8 marshal stacks
