now i’m not saying the early 2000s was the most entertaining. but im ngl i do miss seeing how much defense was apparent then days. it just felt like every bucket was way more meaningful. there’s sm more tension because to get scored on was a way bigger deal. idk how to explain it.

Yeah in the 00s when someone got a dunk in traffic we were excited. Now guys just get dunks all game long and what we know defense should be, is now just putting a hand up pretending to contest. Same with someone hitting a three, even a two pointer, because they had to work harder to get an open shot or hit a highly contested shot

80s MJ before Phil Jackson could easily put 40 PPG. He would also be the primary ball handler so he is likely getting 10+ assists. Since nobody boxes out anymore, and there is nowhere near as many bodies in the paint as there was in that era. He might even be able to pull of averaging a triple double.
At this point, defense is just in game cardio.

The league wants offense and it’s not just the NBA. The NFL and MLB went from defensive to balanced leagues into gaudy offensive leagues over the years.

Everything falls on the players, they’re all just simply happy to be in the nba. No one has pride these days and the drive to wanna compete besides a select few. people letting players pop off like this is laughable, they easily should’ve been hounding Luka the minute he started catching fire 😂

@@IllMatic97The nfl is a great example. Every penalty favors the offense the only penalty favoring the defense occasionally called is Grounding because of loss of yardage AND loss of downs. Any penalty on the defense is pretty much an automatic 1st down. Almost every rule has scaled back what the defense can do and the offense is allowed to cut yet the defense cannot. The Defense cant touch an offensive players helmet that’s illegal hands to the face yet stiff arms are still legal. It’s an offensive centric league no doubt.

it’s different from just bad defense. For example the top of the key 3 from luka on jalen johnson is amazing defense but it’s just better offense. On top of that teams are looking for 6’6+ guys who can handle the ball, pass, score and defend and the teams that do have that (celtic, mavs, suns, 6ers, etc) are just ahead of the game. That’s why a team like the hawks and warriors are bad, you can’t be led by a undersized pg because every team you play is running lineups of 6’6-7’4 floor spacers and that leads to there’s always being a offensive advantage unless you match them.

Let's not act like most of the revenue from the N.B.A. isn't brought in by European Americans! They need somebody that looks like them who they can relate to! That will reel them in and bring in more fans! It's called a business model! Is he good, yes! Is the N.B.A. focusing on him and pushing teams to let him score easily; also yes! Two things can be correct at once ya know!
If you watch the 4th quarters of the 1st Chicago Bulls dynasty against opponents, there's a visible pressure and intensity increase on team defense. This era has pound for pound better players once you get past the top 1-10 elite players compared to that era but I wish some semblance of that kind of defense was around in todays game.

@@Realcoolio Because then paint scoring favors big players so much. ie. putting a hand on Giannis while he's driving will basically do nothing but a player like Brunson would be so discouraged from going to the rim like that, especially when they're a high percentage 3pt shooter. Also hand checking will just encourage the "harden" foul bait since if you chuck up a 3 while someone has a hand on you 90% of the time they'll be in your landing space.
before handcheck they should call all those travels and so called gather steps/stepbacks , carries and travels. also call offensives for moving screens and displacing postup shoulder charges. also remove or reconsider that freedom of movement bs rule offball players can run anywhere as they want and u cant put your body on their lane to defend them offball so they always are 1 step ahead of d. just apply the rules as they should be for travels and dont call foul on every little contact while defending.

You can deny the lack of defense being a huge reason for players scoring so rapidly today. The worst defensive team 10 years ago is a top 5 ranked defense today.

The EASIEST and quickest fix is to switch the shot clock after an offensive rebound back to 24 seconds instead of 14 seconds. That will cut down on the number of possessions in a game by a bit. Other changes will have to take much more

@paquinraino8180 gotcha. But it does increase the number of possessions as teams have to shoot faster off an offensive rebound. So then final scores will be a couple points higher. Also if the shot clock was set back to 24. Teams would pull the ball back out and get reset more. So you're playing defense for longer, but would ultimately defend less shots

I have no idea why the defensive 3 second rule is still there. It's basically handicapping defenses.
Just watch the Euroleague as an example. You have super creative offenses but at the same time you have to earn every basket. You add that with NBA athleticism and skill and you get a perfect product
The 3-second rule would deter nothing. Bigs like Lopez, Embiid, Jokic, KAT, etc would just shoot open 3's if they decide to camp the paint.

@@rogelioatempa1115Those guys are open because the defensive big is at the mercy of the attacking guard. They have to get out of the comfort zone and switch or play the percentages with the drop coverage. Without the defensive 3 teams can clog the paint with weak side defenders and make the guard have to think and make a clever decision. That extra split second is enough to rotate on the big who's gonna have a hard time beating a guard from the 3 point line

Players today may be able to shoot 3s better than the average player 20 years ago, but they'd NEVER be able to score with as much ease as they currently can if they had to face the same level of physicality and hustle the league had 20 years ago. And the fact the at least half of basketball fans have little to no respect or regard for a 73 point game is what you get when you allow offense and defense to be so unbalanced for this long (and it's only getting worse).
Id personally rather watch reruns of the tough battles between teams in past eras than Lukas 73 point game. It just doesn't seem nearly as tough as 50 points did 20 or 30 years ago. And it's honestly sad that that's the case.

The excuse that todays players supposedly are much more skilled than in the past doesn't really work, when most experts including some of the current gen players believe, that MJ would 'average' 50 PPG!
In the same manner people need to understand that none of those 70 points players of this area, would be anywhere close to these numbers if they would play with the rules of the 90s. As good as the players are, these kind of games today are purely based on the lack of defense and the rules.
Yeah playing proper defense would get you in foul trouble. Their hands are tied like there's nothing they could do to stop it. NBA favours the offense too much, to them the offense could probably save their ratings.
Look, the best way to "defend" Luka is to allow him to cook without his teammates. You have to protect the paint and not sacrifice your perimeter defense just to chase him and he then finds an open man. Players with Luka's ability can score their asses off, but if you keep his teammates out of it, you have a much better chance to win. You don't mind Luka hitting 40 with only 5 or 6 assists with around 3-6 turnovers and one teammate with 15 points. The Hawks only lost that 73 point game by 5 points and the 3rd quarter was the difference. The Hawks defense allowed another 20 point scorer and it cost them the game.

It shouldn’t be surprising the league is like this. I know most of us played basketballl video games growing up. I’m 28 and I always either shots 3s or dunked in a game, short Possesions, and high scores… the nba players are just grown ups who grew up in the video game era playing 2k. The game was always more fun this way. At least from an entertainment perspective. And if most ppl wanted to play the basketball video games that way. Of course everyone would have wanted to play in real life that way.

The talent pool in the league is definitely phasing out smaller guards 6’3 and under. You need to be an absolute offensive weapon to stay on the floor at that height. The future is bigger guards, I think that’s why the Spurs started Sochan at PG when he clearly doesn’t have PG skills. Since this season is a wash for them they just are trying out what a super big line up would look like and would rather a 6’5, 6’6 player develop guard skills.

1. So after hearing what you said about double teams... you'd rather have a star (hyper-skilled) player score 60/70 points over forcing another (less hyper-skilled) player ATTEMPT to score 60/70 points. And keep in mind, double teams are adjustments. It's meant to slow/stop a player from dominating, disrupt rhythm, end their current flow. It's not meant to be full on for 48 minutes.
2. Teams don't properly trap as much as they use to. The reason is because officiating will blow that whistle faster than mall security. There's a fear of the officials due to the penalty for physicality, and therefore a lack of physicality is what's impacting defense. That's why you have scoring frenzies like now.
Yea some of it's skill, but not all of it. We've seen players score over 60 before so ultimately it's nothing new. It's the frequency that's new, and there's a reason for that.
3. When Kobe scored 81 he had 26 points in the 1st half. That's a projection of 50+ points for the game. Luka had 41 points in the 1st half. That's a projection of 80+ points for the game. To not double team at all is egregious defense because of the fear of penalties... or maybe it's what the league wants... either way it's not solely based on "hyper-skill".
It does feel bad now... cause now I just feel like all the records don't mean much now bc every time one of them gets broken is just bc literally no one is playing defense and they every single ticky tack call
If you want to kill the guard point scoring, then the only rule you take away is the 3 second defensive violation rule. That will cause more post play into the game.
The issue is we also have a bunch of big men that probably don't have the skill set to post up in the traditional sense e.g. Wemby or Chet.
Feel like we need to increase the tree point range by a couple steps. Add more space to the mid range while also making 3’s just a little bit more of a dedicated skill.
Simply add hand checking back.
Nothing should ever be changed regarding the court measurements whether it’s 2’s or 3’s.

The FIBA rules in Europe is the perfect balance. It’s the perfect balance of physicality, defense, and offense. That’s why we have been struggling overseas the last 2 trips over there. That’s why even luka himself said it’s easier to score in the nba than Europe because of the rules

Luka Doncic said himself its way easier to score in the NBA than Euro ball. The lack of effort thats being displayed on the defensive side of the ball is indicative of this era. The refs call ticky tacky fouls. Players are able to carry, travel and palm the basketball. You cant measure how good these players today are if you cant give a good amount of resistance. Over hyped league.

People really don't understand how ahead of his time Lamar Odom was. He was the first big man that I had seen with handles like that. It really opened my eyes to how skillful the big man could be moving forward.

Basketball will eventual need the smaller guards again when the talent pool dries up. The player pool for players like Wemby is really low.

to me is the fact that there's so much spacing.. All dudes are practicing are open shots, and attacking the paint from the 3. If u watch old school games, 1 on 1 was with 2 guys at arms length almost all the time. That does matter.

All these sets that are run are so effective because of the freedom of movement rule. You cannot impede an offensive players movement so they can cut, and run all these actions and u can’t bump them or anything to knock them outta position that’s why after that rules inception ppg raised so high.so they can get to their spots and u can basically do nothing and with the space they have all the room in the world to move and no one can stop it. Then the amount of illegal screens set makes it impossible to deal with. Add a good old fashioned traveling and carrying and that ridiculous gather step rule.
The only way to change the game would be to change the rules and officiating. Allow for some hand checking and a little more contact at the rim. Start rewarding players who hustle and don't allow easy baskets at the rim or on the perimeter

I don't really watch nba anymore. I stay updated based on your videos a d some other content giving standings and highlights. Haven't watched a single game the last 2 seasons... That being said. Teams don't play zone defense anymore? Wouldn't it be a better defense strategy to play certain zone defenses to prevent these types of scoring explosions?
Teams still play zone but a zone don’t work when the player they’re trying to stop is a elite playmaker the Miami heat in the finals last year tried that against the nuggets but failed miserably because of jokic being so good at finding teammates plus you have to have the right defensive prices to pull it off which most teams do not have

I’ve been saying small guards are gonna become extinct in our life time. With players like Luka, “ben simmon,” Haliburton, Melo becoming our future. Players you’d probably consider PF, SF, SG by their builds and athleticism being move to the one spot. The 6’4 and under will most likely be a specialist role for some time, the devolve into a novelty i.e. Spudd Webb, Muggsy Bogues, Isaiah Thomas, Nate Robsinson. They’ll still be great but just not needle pushers.

My opinion. They need to allow some physicality on defense again. Hand checking at least and drop the 3 in the key rule. I'm not saying go back to like bad boy Pistons style or anything, but the game needs some ballance. Offenses can literally do whatever they want in the current day. Hardly any calls on carries and travels. With just a couple changes it would open up more options on defense and you might see some variety in the league again. Anyone who's ever played basketball will know pulling off some fancy ass dribbles is a lot harder when the defender has a hand on you. If he does blow by his man there's a rim protector already in the paint now because no more 3 second violation. So they either got to pull up from mid range (which is the guy doing analytics worst nightmare), pass it out, or see if their layup package is good enough to put it in past the defender. This alone would make the offense vs defense interactions far more entertaining.
Basically bringing the rules to a more FIBA style of play.
Lows analysis is way way sharper now than 2 years ago and I credit this entirely to marz 😂

That particular game is a bad team defense problem not a NBA problem. Bad teams usually play bad defense. I watched 90s basketball, the era whereppl allegly tackled players ever play, I remeber the bad teams looking like the Hawks did.
We DO need 2 way balance. I just flipped on the warriors/ lakers 4th quarter. Curry hits a game winner from 30.. then Lebron just goes to the rim and gets fouled on the lightest contact you could ask for honestly.. hands straight up, draymond green. As a fan.. after seeing Steph hit a game winner.. I already know we’re gonna lose.
Clutch free throws.. and the lack there of in situations they’re actually needed is crazy. This is a PROBLEM problem: a lot of game winners wiped off by straight up whistle calls.. like sure anything can be a foul. Watch warriors lakers, Draymond hands straight up.. this is basketball now.

Its very simple what the NBA should od. Just implament FIBA rules and and bring in european coaches. Its not a coincidence that every time Americans go to the Olympics or World Cup they have a harder time scoring.
Before the 2000s there’s were only like 2-3 offensive players and the rest played defense. Present day everyone on the team is able to do everything

The Euroleague is not on the same level as the nba, plus the rules are different.

I think what these old heads really can't comprehend is cause of players like kobe, mj lebron, steph letting people have a idea of reps they would do in a workout & players truly drilling themselves in today's era vs yesterday's offenses have upgraded plus let's say the 80s & 90s you didn't have to worry about players shooting the 3 in high volume & it definitely wasn't multiple players doing which spreads you thinner on defense no real new defensive schemes or anything but all kinds of different variations of offensive moves like the floater for example the floater is one of the main reasons bigs will never get the amount a block shots a game as a wilt chamberlain or bill Russell like 15+ blocks but it was because things like floater layups weren't common most players did traditional layups or dunks which is easier to time or not to mention euro step into a layup or floater that 2 different options I hate announcers & people who don't get out & run full court anymore against players who really work on their skill I hate how they don't have a clue how much harder playing defense is & I've played against semi pro, d2 level, & overseas players alot in recent years so I just be like alot couch potatoes who just watch the game but don't truly understand it opinions piss me off not saying you have to have played to understand the game it some that understand the game perfectly who never played high level but they understand athleticism & what's realistically possible vs fairytale but I find it's only half the people who gets it who never played
The Hawks' lack of defensive resistance really showed this game. Lol. However, I blame the NBA rules in terms of defensive physicality. Silver wants to show a player's offensive ability but wants to do so with less defensive resistance. Lol. If anything...not much defensive resistance. Lol.

Honestly for the most part Atlanta was trying to play defense on Luka, the reason Luka was able to do what he did is because Atlanta's point of attack defenders are ass and Capela isn't the guy he was in Houston or even his first couple years in Atlanta, but even if he was he isn't able to make up for the atrocious point of attack defense around him. Capela at his peak was not such an elite defender that he was on Gobert's level where you could surround him with trash defense and still pump out the number 1 or number 2 defense in the league off his ability alone
