"After the soil is dried out completely, I would give it another 5-6 days before watering it again." No wonder my moon cactus rotted! I didn't realize that they needed so little water. It is quite difficult to tell when they require more water just by visual cues. Definitely a good tip to know as I try to reroot what I managed to save from rot Because the moon cactus is such a statement cactus, I'd pair it with a low-lying green cactus, like ripple jade, or a small delicate flower-like succulent, like october daphne or string of buttons
I had a moon cactus for years and eventually the "moon" fell off Lol! They are cute cactus with lovely moon colors! I think they would pair well with Ogre Ears succulents just for the Wow affect! 😂
I see these in the grocery store all the time and never knew how unusual they are. Now I know why they’re so different. Love the planters they’re in.. per usual! 💕🌵😀
Good info on this cactus. I’ve had mine in full sun for the last couple of months. Now I know better. I’ll be keeping it in bright light rather then full sun 🌵❤️
I agree with Ramona. I always thought they were painted, or were otherwise unnatural. That said, I just bought a pink one. Thank goodness I learned here they don't take full sun. I plan to plant it in an arrangement with a Fairy Castle cactus, which I think will look good. I'll need either another plant or perhaps just some attractive rocks or crystals to balance it out. Still thinking that over.
I was very skeptical about this plant before this video... I always thought it was gimmicky but now that I know the story behind them, I kind of want to add them to my plant family and see how it goes!
Omg!! A video on cacti!! I love cacti along with succulents, I did NOT know the top needed the base to survive , very interesting, but like others said it looks very unnatural :/
Yesterday I went to buy some plants and one of those little red balls made its way to my bag, lucky for me I stumbled upon your channel and quickly planted it on top of another one, I really hope it grows big
I have learned more from your Channel in the last two weeks than ANY other location! KUDOS to your 'get to the point' and excellent speaking tutorials. Really enjoy your videos (I'm from Tucson!!)
I’m currently growing this one indoors - but you taught me a lot I didn’t know. Mine hasn’t produced any babies or flowers and now I know why! Thanks!!
I just became a Moon Cactus mom! I ran into in my local grocery store and I was amazed by its uniqueness! Thank you sooo much for this informative video this will help me a lot since this is my first plant since I was 8 😂 ❤️💚
i keep my red moon cactus between two silver arrow cacti in a long planter. i like the look of the color contract and size! they all are doing super well too!
I always wondered about these guys. Now I know. Weird little plant. I'm still enjoying this series of videos! Im only like 2 months in to my new succulent hobby/life, this series is really helping, thanks for all you do!
I've had mine since 1996. It suddenly went a growth spurt in 2020 and is now full of long outgrowths over 8' tall. It clings to the side of my building. Time to trim it down.
This is my first time growing a cactus these are so beautiful abd so far i have three of them i have other plants and these are magnificent i love them
I've had my moon cactus (freddie) for a year and I've never had any other plant in my life. Can confirm that this is super easy to grow and maintain. If I can do it, anyone can. I water it when I realize I haven't watered it in a while and the soil is dry and I haven't had any problems. Good plant to have.
Another video from this channel that has helped me out! I will go ahead and sub at this point. Everytime I get a new plant I end up here any way. Thanks
I’ve never been very interested in this type of cactus, but you may have piqued my curiosity a little! I just might try this next time I get the chance!
Mine looks so alien like, its so fun. Love the contrast between the two textures of these. Mine has been REEAAAAALLLLLLYYYY easy to care for. its been thriving for like 4 years
I learned a lot about moon cactus in this video (to begin with it has a really cool name like “moon cactus” :) Also previously I had one of these that every baby I removed died, so now in the video I learned that they can’t make it on their own because it doesn’t actually make chlorophyll (good to know) and that’s why it’s grafted to the lower cactus 💡
This is another one I had many years ago before I became interested in succulents. It did not survive in my care because I am sure I over watered it. Now I know better and may try this again. Thanks for the info.
This is so cute and unusual. I would be a bit anxious about the spines because I have suffered some nasty lacerations on spines from other cacti. I do love those amazing pots you have them planted in. I need to keep an eye out for some like that.
I potted my moon cactus with a zebra type succulent in the middle and another cactus on opposite corner. i dont know what type of cactus the other one was. it looked like the kind you see in the desert with very few tiny spines. unfortuneately the zebra grew so big so fast it started to push the cacti over. so i repotted everything singly. love your channel. i've learned soooo much!
thanks! i just got one today with my bf, and its my first plant of my own (i have my mom, a plant expert, who can help too tho) and i wanna make sure i care for it well! this was very good info
So glad I found this video, I have bought and "killed" several of these beauitful cacti. Such good info, I will try again as I do love these little beautys. I had them outside before and now I know not to do that again. Also I have overwatered them . Thanks for the information.
I had one of these for a couple years and then it started to decline so cut off the top part that can’t survive on its own and now the bottom cactus is growing and thriving by itself. Before I cut off the top, the bottom cactus never grew. Pretty cool to watch it develop its own growth.
Wow! That's so funny that it's actually just grafted on, I've always assumed it was just a part of the plant! I find it difficult to pair plants with even some of the less poky but still spiny varieties, cause it's hard to plant the poky one in the first place, but then you have to be reaching around it to plant the other! Even my aloe vera has poked holes in my other plants.
I do love the look of these and try one every few years but have had little success at keeping them alive longer than a year or so. Based on what you said I now believe I over watered them. But I did keep the base growing for quite a while longer! I think it's time to give them another try.
I think Moon Cactus looks best planted just the way you have them alone in one pot. When I first bought mine, I planted 2 in one pot and then decided I didn't like them paired. So I repotted and gave them their own pot and I now have 5 of them.
I must have over watered mine. I only have the bottom part. Maybe I'll get another & see if I can graft a "baby" to it. They're so colorful, tho' I've never been sure I liked the unnatural way they happen. Thanks.
I really don't like these but your information about them was so interesting I may have to get one. And thanks for all the links you provide for the plants as well as the GREAT pots.
Totally “alien” to me ... but a bit more interested ... in fact going to a Birthday party this evening ... will pick up one as a part of a gift ... maybe an arrangement ?!? Thanks again ALWAYS something new !!!
For the longest time I really thought they grew naturally like this lol
Well my boy she talked about flowers that make fruit that you can grow by itself it might be completely green or a little bit green
me too
Same here.
Hahahaha
I know im asking randomly but does any of you know a tool to log back into an instagram account??
I somehow lost the account password. I appreciate any help you can offer me
What an interesting cacti! I never knew the top cannot survive without the bottom portion

to be fair a lot of them just rot for no apparent reason, i watered mine properly and the top rotted off lol
haha at least you did it with just a moon cactus, most cacti require dry cycles. and even more little water to become dormant during winter months
This makes me wonder how the original moon cactus was made.
The original Gymnocalycium mihanovichii is green and occasionally it will produce variegated (albino) pups. It's a form of mutation.
I had a moon cactus for years and eventually the "moon" fell off Lol! They are cute cactus with lovely moon colors! I think they would pair well with Ogre Ears succulents just for the Wow affect! 😂
Oooh, I like that idea!

My birthday is this weekend and I’m hoping to get a planter or two I hinted about. If not, I’ll buy one myself!
So bright and happy!

Did it die? Mine top part looks like it’s losing its color

That is exciting! Best of luck 🙂

A warm thank you for the education, I bought two months ago when I first saw them and thought they were too cute. They sure are easy to keep
I haven’t started growing cactus yet but this seems to be a good one to try.
Omg!! A video on cacti!! I love cacti along with succulents, I did NOT know the top needed the base to survive , very interesting, but like others said it looks very unnatural :/

I've killed 2 of these. This would have been helpful years ago. 😁

Colleen Coyle-Levy did it grow new parts? Or just kept going upwards?
@@hectorgauna350 It grew new parts. The original stalk calloused over so I don't think it will grow any taller

I don't have this one but I have seen them everywhere. Interesting information. Thanks. Ethel Walker
i know this is an older video but i love the moon cat with Bear paws
Imo they would look good next to some Sedum Rubrotinctum (green jelly bean plant) since they both look so unnatural which would give it a playful look
i agree!!
