Handmade Powerlifting Belt | Leathercraft for the Gym

- Ever wonder how gym powerlifting belts are made? I handcrafted a custom DIY full-grain vegetable tanned lifting belt using traditional leathercraft tools and techniques. The project design was simple, but took a lot of work! It’s a thick, durable 13mm belt with a secure double-prong closure. Unfortunately, my gym doesn’t allow recording, so I couldn’t show myself exercising and testing it out. But it went great! The belt is incredibly supportive and will soon break in and become the perfect powerlifting belt for years to come. This relaxing, ASMR-style video shows my step-by-step process for creating the lifting belt from start to finish.

I like it, great job. I'm thinking of making one myself. I need to get back into making leather goods.
You should get back into it. For this piece, the hand stitching took forever, but I also double stitched it. So if you avoid that, you're good.

Did you use a pattern? Or make the pattern yourself? made several wallet patterns, but struggling with the dimensions of a belt haha?
I made the pattern myself, custom made. The belt is a sort of hybrid design. 10mm-thick belt, but it's 13mm where the smaller belt wraps around, which gives me extra support without being as stiff as an entirely 13mm belt would be. Also it's a 4-inch wide belt, and the middle strap/buckle is 2 inches.

@castillo Heritage Crafts what type of leather straps have u used and whats is thickness of each straps like in mm are they sole bends?
I cut the pieces out of the bend portion of a full hide of natural veg tan. Where the smaller strap overlaps, the belt is 13mm and 9mm where it don't overlap. Each of the four layers is 3mm thick, plus one additional 1mm liner layer under the thinner belt piece for added support.

Where did you get the buckle from?
I got the buckle from Tandy Leather. I'm sure you can find one on Amazon as well. This one is the biggest Tandy had, but there are buckles that are 4 inches in size, which makes it the same width as the belt.
