- SkyFOX over Rapidan Dam in south central Minnesota. The dam is reported to be in imminent failure condition. The City of North Mankato is building an earthen levee as a precaution and to protect lower North Mankato.
I'd say once the river has any path around the dam, it has now "failed". Nothing imminent anymore, it will just get to be an increasingly wider path.
Well as of now the Dam has completely crumbled.
@@falkwulf3842 wait really?
@observer_effect, a worst failure can still occur so they're not out of the woods yet. if the structure fails, a torrent of water can flow out release more water than the lower river channel can hold.
@@takumi2023 We had to evacuate because Civil Service said the dam had crumbled.
@@takumi2023 no, they're making stuff up it's still standing
@@reubenj.cogburn8546 Civil Service just told us the Dam has suffered a partial crumble. Earlier Civil Service had claimed the Dam crumbled. They just Clarified that its a partial crumble but it has weakened structural integrity and they are expecting it to completely collapse in the next 12 hours. As even more water enters the river from the rain that is currently falling upriver.
Built as hydropower about 1908. Rehabbed in 1974 or thereabouts. I lived in the campground there in 1973. House is Jim H.'s,. He is about 84 years old. He has run the Dam Store since 1972, iirc. Sad.
The people are so good there. I truly hurt for them.
Jim H runs the dam store ,next to his dam house, and his dam truck, with his dam wife, and his dam kids. So sad, dam.
😢@@panheadsforever74
@@panheadsforever74 I heard his wife on an interview saying that the dam store may go. Everytime she said it, I was taken aback.🤣
as others have said, the failure was failing to keep the spillways clear of debris.
Looks like what led to the breech is the main overflows or spillways became clogged with so many tree's, branches, limbs, etc, that it blocked off the spillways and the water had nowhere to go but AROUND the dam.
Someone screwed up by not removing debris as it showed,it’s common knowledge that you must remove debris to guarantee integrity of the dam outflow
Especially if outflow is pipes.
.
I'd say it seems more like the spillways weren't enough in the first place, the debris likely built up later, but also didn't help. Considering its an old dam, its more likely it wasn't built for this scenario in mind (rapid rising water levels and not being able to discharge as fast as possible), which is becoming a common issue along side poor or inadequate maintenance routines. Likely adding a bigger spillway could've prevented that, but we won't know after investigations are done on the structure afterwards.
Yes, clear out the log-jam!!!
oh yeah, extreme rain has nothing to do with it.. fucking hell
@@MrAtrus64 Extreme rainfall in the area bloated the river.. i bet all that debris came after the heavy rain..
Looking at Google Earth image, that river has already eaten a power substation, and what appeared to be a maintenence building, as it also eats away at that western wall of dirt.
A reminder that mother nature will always find a way around the buildings us humans have put in places
You are absolutely correct about that the current from rivers that over flood stage is very dangerous fast moving. It will take every thing in its path and destroy it .
mother nature is a bitch
Only when improperly built.
@@marcuslinton310 it got clogged up with tree limbs and debris causing it to overfill to go around the side and start eroding the soil. If there's no humans or machines to clean this debris. This will always be the ultimate result
The word is PEOPLE. This "humans" bullshit needs to go already.
I don't live in Minnesota so I want to get a perspective on where this is. I went on Google Earth and it's on the Blue Earth River. It's about 11 mi as the crow flies from Mankato, Minnesota. It's a serpentine River so the distance to Mankato would be more than that. Doesn't look good. Praying for the people affected by these floods.
I'm in ST Peter, about 15 Miles south of Mankato. Right now the river is about 3 ft from the top of the sides, with 4+ feet expected if the dam breaks.....
It has been “overtopped” so that WILL collapse very shorty - I hope they are evacuating
Are you a bot? You are posting the exact same thing on every single one of these videos.
@@sudilos1172 Not completely, thankfully. It's around the actual concrete dam which is good since it's keeping pressure off the dam itself.
@@Chris-pj1os St Peter is NORTH of Mankato
Why is there no effort to unclog the damn to reduce the amount of damage the water is doing ? Severe incompetence.
Does anyone know if there were any dam removals upriver of this dam of which the absence contributed to this?
Mankato State u be careful pulling for you all. MANKATO u r the best. Be safe maybe they can get a break somehow . Stay up u are the strongest folks around
June 25 update: the white house near the dam is partially overhanging the newly carved river bank.
Been on that dam many times. If it breaks, they expect it to only raise levels by 2ft in Mankato and there's still over 10+ft there before breaking any of the break walls.
Have the 20 mil “migrants” get to work on it pronto.
If they’re staying they can start by *HELPING*

Don't be ignorant and rude. It's not helpful.
@@frank-hd6ts And its Biden's fault, of course a Magot response. Check the history books, djt did "NOTHING" for the infrastructure of American while in office for 4 years...
Shouldn't you be packing up more than a case?
The dam doesn't hold that much water. The river would rise 2 ft max, per county officials. Not to mention the water is already flowing around. Nothing extra will happen if the dam 'breaks'.
Oh my gosh, those houses!
This is scary
So, it looks like a 100 plus year old dam is doing the job it was designed for. Although the State of Minnesota has had a 100 plus years to do something about the overflow. As long as the water is not going over the top of the dam it will probably hold.
Yes I was thinking the same, it appears to be holding its own despite the conditions. That water bypassing it is giving some pressure relief.
the erosion of all that water going aroudn the side though means the dam is done stucturally. its a matter of time now before it completly collapses
Apparently it was going over the dam yesterday. It's definitely going to be a total loss.
@@Hotspur37 It looks like there is some rock on the shoulder supporting the dam. It's causing the water to push really far rown.
This dam was useless anyway. It wasn't providing power anymore.
Operational mismanagement....
The question is how does it look down stream?
those roof gutters are trying their best.
For over a hundred years this dam kept this location safe. What they aren't talking about is the HISTORY in this location. The Rapidan Dam Store/Cafe has had people from all over the world eat there. There areI books with signatures and comments to prove this is true. My husband and I have spent a LOT of time there. It makes me physically ill. That house you see in the picture is our friend Jim Hruska's. Jim and family had a sign up on top of door area. It said, "Stranger here but once." They always stuck to that! This story should be told while the buildings are still up.The white house you see in the picture is where Jim and his son David have lived for many, many years.

This dam was old and known to be in very poor condition for MANY years. Why was nothing ever done about it?
politicians can't run on robust infrastructure bills. Last time we tried the Green New Deal it was laughed off by DEM leadership like Pelosi, and Biden's bill was eviscerated by special interests.
Good question to ask your governor
Democrats run the state...
I don't believe it would make any difference because it just went around the dam. I think it's just a case of too much water.
Trump came and did nothing and yet clowns will blame Biden
What about the Kenworthy and Mendenhall houses on the little peninsula? Are they still there? My great great grandfathers:(

How many homes are being vacated downstream?
So sad. My heart goes out to the poor family who are losing their home in this video. I eally am so sorry I wish that this river will not swallow their property.

Water views are never safe to invest in. Mother Nature always will have the last word: flood.
There have been quite a few dam failures in that state in the last few years
Shows you how quickly water can carve the earth out as it pleases
A local guy with a home improvement radio show in my area would always say "Water always wins, that's why there's a Grand Canyon". Water always wins.
Anyone know where I can get some damn bait?
With all our advanced technology there is NO EXCUSE for ANY DAM failing nowadays! They have obviously know about this long in advance. People's lives are at stake and we need to hold the officials in charge, responsible for this. Dreadful!!!!!!!
Lol, they'll just spend millions of dollars to form committees to discuss about why the committees they formed didn't recommend more committees for discussions.
The Dam Store isn’t very far away. That is the real name of the store nearby.
The house is expected to go. The store is just across what was the road to the campground.
That's a decent kayak run down the 'new' spillway.
I feel like having a house right next to a dam might not be the greatest idea...
it would be a lovely view if we maintained our infrastructure instead of just endless war and cops
The main part of the white house looks like it has been standing there for quite a while with a few additions added over the years. It might have stood on that spot before the dam was built. I hope everyone stays safe and gets out before it gets worse.
Those were built in 1910. They were fine till the log jam happened this morning.

Doesnt look like its beyond saving, the washed outside looks bad but that part of the dam is supported by the huge rock face there and the tons of slab next to that rockface. I'd worry more about the outer side collapsing more towards the house rather than the inside of the dam itself.
All depends on how much more the waters going up before it goes down.
So much for improving the nation's infrastructure.
Tulsa Oklahoma is in the same spot with Keystone Dam, there's a plan to raise it but they have to close the road on the top of the dam and the project will take 5 years

Biden passed the infrastructure bill. Explain why only 10% of the funds went to infrastructure.
Keep me updated...
I wouldn’t trust that bridge to hold if that wall goes.
Why aren't they at least trying to reduce the log jam and trying to clear the water blockage? If the dam were flowing properly, it would be much safer. If it over tops the dam, there will be a much higher chance of total failure. An excavator with a grapple should be pulling debris out right now.
Looks like a job for Post10. 😂
Who would go on?
The same is happening all over
Johnstown dam repeat.
See it out the back yard and reported it 20+ years ago

You are kidding, right? It is not safe to put an excavator on the top of a dam that is on the verge of crashing down the river. There is no possible way I would go out there on a piece of machinery. It would be a death wish.
@TheBrushcutter You know how post10 would feel about an excavator going near that dam. 😂😂 Or should I say an idiot with an excavator.😅
A sky crane helo with a grapple could remove lots of debris from the main gates with minimum human risk.

Why is no one clearing the log-jam???
Because they don't want to be killed.

Those shoreline homeowners raved about their river views.
Why isn't anyone doing anything to stop the water.
You see the new hiway. Now why do you suppose the city didn’t update that damn? It’s pure neglect on their part to those home owners! Seriously wrong
Praying - Hoping Mankatoans evacuate.
Back in the day, men of action would be removing those logs. Now, we film it while clutching our pearls.
The idiots in charge let these old dams rot until they break nobody wants to take responsibility.
Driftwood is slowing the draining too.
Really looks like if they got the debris out of the way it would flow enough to stop topping the dam. Maybe a crazy dude with a chain saw can save the day
Helicopter 🚁
Debris jammed up the spillway enough to raise the water level over the approach road. All those logs gone, there wouldn't be a problem.
This scary
Don't take chances get to higher ground as fast as you can.

Washin away the trash over there,it's a sign 😂
Sad for the local residents, but at least millionaires didn’t have to pay taxes.
I never had cancer until they elected Biden
Not good, it might hold though. Looking a google the water has a big area to spread out, before it reaches a large population
Putting off something for 10+ years... great job Minnesota. Instead of more roundabouts how about fix this kind of stuff first.

What happens when you build damns when God designed it to be a river.
Where did all the wood come from to block things up?
Trees grow along the sides of rivers. Floods come, wind comes, trees fall into the river, current carries them down stream and then they get tangled and pile up against things like dams.
Weve had so much rain here lately. Almost 7 inches just in Mankato late last week. Lots of flooding happening in Minnesota lately!

We can expect more localized weather extremes as the global climate changes. What an exciting time we live in!
This is truly what it will take for some people to realize that humans have to make drastic changes.
Meanwhile in reality: Climate extremes are decreasing, not increasing. Number of Hurricanes/Cyclones, number of tornadoes, severe flooding. Severe Heat waves are fewer and shorter. Forest fires have nothing on the 1920's and 1930's and before when over 30million acres a year used to burn EVERY SINGLE YEAR, yet people are "horrified" when a couple million burn. WAKE UP, climate change is going great. More CO2 in atmosphere = more plant food as NASA shows, earth is GREENER today than in 1980.
Where do you start your "global warming" measurement? Since 1850 we have warmed .7°c. Since Medeveil times we have COOLED 4°c.
Yeah like get Joe and his administration out so we can have good infrastructure in America ❤

"Imminent failure condition is just one of many big-brain terms I picked up in kolludge. Most people wouldn't understand...*
St. Francis dam, look it up.
Only nature that restores what humans have destroyed
When that current disintegrates the rest of the embankment that whole dam will let go.
That’s what happens when you don’t maintain infrastructure. The repairs and consequences are expensive
Bet that was avoidable...RIP to all the homes that will no longer be there ...
All dams should be built with cranes on tracks to clear debree. Nowadays, also remotely controlled.
It'll be fine. as long it doesn't go over the roadbed.
The side that is flowing over is anchored in solid rock, It isn't going anywhere.
seems like they could park a crane on that new bridge and clear up some of that debris to get the water flowing through the spillway...
If the dam isn't holding water it has failed . This dam failed 10 hours ago. Pretending it isn't happening don't change anything.
This Dam will indeed, inevitably collapse. The major damage downstream will be caused, not by water, but the debris it carries with it.
Not good…reminds me of the Spencer Dam on the Niobrara river in NE in 2019….big ice jam took that out….catastrophic things happened quickly.
Doesn't look like "imminent failure" its has FAILED.
For a damn that has failed, it still seems to be standing pretty tall.
When you get a 1 in 500 or 1,000 year rain event, dams don't have the ability to grow taller.
Excessive rain is the problem, humans failed.
Failed to build a damn big enough for that kind of event.
I had great memories fishing that dam... It's a shame the state never did anything as far as the repairs it needed. Kept getting neglected, now it may not even be there much longer.
I think it will hold up.
Damn builders......
Crying wont help ya;
Prayin wont do you no good.
Once again, after someone deleted my post ...... Why can't they airlift debris and clear the dam vents to ease the disaster? Looks like they WANT it to fail!
