Oh yeah, most validating trans story I have. The first time I went into the makeup store, an older lady (about my mom's age) saw how confused I was and volunteered to explain how to pick a concealer and how to apply it. She was so sweet it made me cry (in a good way) Most people will be very friendly and non-judgemental!

Also a good motivator: many women don't do makeup as good as you see on UA-cam videos where everything's perfect.
At some point you'll see people having makeup on where you realize, for example, their eyeliner lines are not as straight as yours or their mascara is not as good applied as you have learned.
My point is: don't overextend yourself into perfectionism, and just have fun experimenting.
It's not about being perfect. Because over time you'll see in practice that many people with makeup don't do it UA-cam style perfect.
As long as you have fun!

Also remember everyone, that you do not need much makeup, expensive makeup, whatever. You really just need some base, blush, prob eyeliner and also some lipstick if you want. Not much else you need, which is the opposite of what many videos tell you! You don't need to buy more than 4 cheap ass things to look great!

There are also clearance sales sometimes, when companies need to ditch their old inventory so they can stock more fresh inventory. Sometimes those sales are insanely cheap.
If one has problems figuring out what colors one fits in (especially if one has any kind of olive/green skin tone), those clearance sales are the perfect time to buy an excess of eyeshadows and whatnot and try all of them in different configurations so one can learn what kinds of colors one likes where. You can't use any eyeshadows on the lips (safe to use on the eyelids isn't the same as lip safe, i.e. wear for hours) as lipwear, but it's fairly safe to briefly apply eyeshadows to lips for taking photo color references if you immediately after clean off the eyeshadows. You can give away or throw away the makeup that doesn't suit you afterwards.
Figuring out colors that look flattering on you, or make you happy or better yet both at the same time, is pretty important for makeup habits.
Knowing what you want out of makeup lets you be more confident in future makeup purchases and avoid FOMO.

One tip I got from an agent at a beauty store I went to is to use Tinted Moisturizer instead of Foundation, because Foundation will dry out your skin, and the moisturizer will moisturize your skin, while still giving a half-decent concealment of any imperfections in your skin. The best known one is the Maracuja from Tarte, but you can find dupes at a lower price with a little bit of searching.

As someone who is AFAB, I can't express how grateful I am for you stressing the importance of practice. I'm 23 and have been doing my makeup for a decade. I still struggle with aspects of it and am still learning how to do looks that compliment my face. There WILL be "bad" makeup days. It just happens. As someone who is a big fan of eyeliner, my best advice is to also invest in a makeup remover and eyeliner brush for clean up! I'm ashamed to say I only just started doing this. It's saved me a lot of time from having to re-do an eye because it doesn't match.
Also, most importantly; you are SO beautiful, it kills me!

    • @Call-me-Al
      @Call-me-Al Місяць тому

I'm 40 and a cis woman, I only started being serious about using makeup at some point in my 30s (I still don't use foundation, though I purchased some powder foundation for passport photos and ID photos. I've read makeup tutorials (including books) and watched videos for like two decades, been actively practicing for over a decade, and I still keep learning how to do stuff better on my own face.
I'm not even trying to learn how to do makeup well on different faces, but seeing all the different tutorials and hearing why they are doing it that way is super helpful.
Learning how to keep your hand steady and aimed the right way can take a makeup routine down from half an hour to five minutes, because after enough practice you'll know exactly what the minimum you need to do to achieve the effect you want and you'll be much more systematic about it.
I second the makeup remover, soap and water takes too long and can take too much scrubbing.
One tool I bloody love and don't understand why it isn't more mainstream is silicone makeup/glitter applicator pads (ideally the ones on long handles). They're as effective as fingertips, and way more precise than fingertips & normal applicator pads. Not as good as blending brushes for blending out eyeshadows, but I like using eyeshadows as non-smudged eyeliner and it excels at that task as well as putting on those really soft texture eyeshadows that almost feel like putty. I know I could for powder eyeshadows just take some and mix it with some setting/fixing spray and use an eyeliner brush to use as eyeliner, but I don't need the security of the setting/fixing spray usually.

Regarding eyelash curlers, as this is something I only found out recently and don't see mentioned a lot outside of Asian makeup tutorials, you need to make sure that you get one that's the right size and shape for your eyes. If you have difficulty using the standard ones you find in stores that could easily be why. I can only speak for the US as to what's available, which seems to just be for round-shaped eyes, so if your eyes are almond-shaped then you're going to have to look for something that works specifically for them. If your eyes are deep-set then this is something that needs to be considered as well.

im afab so i can't tell u abt laser but brow tips, i can do. most important: never ever pluck the upper line of your brows. if there's major strays, sure, but that's a few hairs. if you want an extreme shape change, leave that for a professional. but doing your brows at home in a simple way, just to make them more typically feminine, is easy af. literally dw.
take a pencil or a chopstick, put it where your nose meets your face like its lower end side. idk what that's called. and move the other end into the crook where it meets your forehead/brow. this is where the brow begins. move the pencil so that it passes through the pupil. the spot where it meets the brow is where you can accentuate the arch. lastly, move it so that it meets the tail end of your brow. this is where the thinning and arching and all your processes begin, going toward the middle point, ending at the root of your nose.
one: brush the eyebrows up with a spoolie and carefully cut the too long hairs that leave the line of the brow. nail kit scissors r fine for this. if ur scaredy u can do it over a fine fine comb. i still do it like this. no blades near my eyes ty
two: pluck between the brows. everything thats outside of the border u set from the nose to the inner corner has to go. unibrows are so sexy but idk if u want one. also, don't keep going once u reach the point u set. ur brows will look like theyre getting a divorce. sorry :<
three: if you want a thinner shape, i'll assume u do, start at the tail of the brow and tweeze one line of hairs to the mid point. if u don't wanna arch them, just keep moving flat, that's all the end. u are done with the tweezers. bravo!
three: shaping the arch is just tweezing in a soft semicircle from that midpoint to the set ends, pls do look up some charts though and see what wld be a nice shape for ur face. good luck!!!!! also. if u feel like theyre still too thick, go a lil thinner at the tail end. not at the inner end though. those hairs don't lie sideways and it might have a weird effect where they look like fireworks. oops.
four: if u want, u can fill in with eyebrow pencil or some matte eyeshadow, or if u want them to stick to ur face or if ur brows look split in half like mine use a bit of vaseline. brow gel is the actual thing u should use but vaseline works just fine lol. and i can't afford brow gel.
hope this helped. i am also drunkish so if this is a bit nonsesne i am sorry. bye

I started with a pricy (30 euro) liquid foundation that matched my skin tone perfectly, there's an extra covering one (Douglas Brand, Black cap in my case)
that's been enough to make my skin look a lot smoother (I also scrub a lot and I'm a Ginger so no black hairs)
and a mascara that said "extra volume" or whatever.
then a nude lipstick and some blush, easy.

Where was this information 33 years ago (yes I am that old!) when I transitioned. Seriously though great tutorial. The amount of failed makeup experiments I did were outragous. The best thing I ever did was get advice on the most appropriate foundation colour to use. Scary as hell the first time but a game changer. As you get older its worth checking that you are still using the right foundation colour and also the correct type as you skin changes. HRT will effect skin texture so it a good idea to check the type of foundation, you may start with a heavy foundation but as time goes on you may have to go to a lighter weight foundation or even a coloured moisturiser.

With both eyeliner and eye shadow, a lot of what you're doing is creating the impression of longer lashes. This means whether you're blending together three or more shades of eye shadow or just putting on one color it should always be darkest toward the outside and lighter inside toward the nose. This is also seen in both winged eyeliner and just the tendency for it to get thicker toward the outside of the eye. Some people don't even line the inside but however you do it the inside should be thin to thicker outside. This makes it feel like your lashes are longer and fanned out more even before mascara.

The hand on chin thing is something I adopted from painting tabletop gaming miniatures and it works wonders. When possible, I also anchor my elbow somewhere. If I'm leaning into a mirror, I'll put my elbow on the mirror. If at a table, I'll try to rest my elbow on the table. The more points of stability you have the more steady you'll be for eyeliner. Also... THANK YOU so much for showing a very basic approach that doesn't do the whole face with concealer. One reason I haven't messed with more than eyeliner is because I'm bald (presently identify as nonbinary but that's slightly because I'm still telling myself I could never present as a trans woman). What you've shown is the FIRST video I've seen that gives me some practical tips that don't rely on having a hairline to provide a convenient terminal point for the makeup application. Thank you again!
Bonus: I've been in some makeup shops with AMAB, masc-presenting folks who work there and have gorgeous makeup. Finding those folks to consult are a big confidence boost.

I apply makeup about ten times a year. I'll probably be fairly good at it in about five years time! I generally don't give a damn about passing so it's all good!

An important thing I've (tried to) tell to myself whenever I was/am self-consicous when shopping. When's the last time you paid attention to someone else in the store? Never. They won't notice you either. Same with the gym. No one else cares. And if they do, so what? You don't know them, you'll never see them again, who cares what they think? Don't be afraid of shopping for makeup or clothes. No one's gonna notice.

I'm still figuring things out, likely some sort of NB, but have been messing with makeup even when I was certain I was just some guy since highschool (grew up in the emo days so there was some social grace, dabbled with it through college often too) and it might just have been good customer service but when I went to get eyeliner and nailpolish at the pharmacy the clerks seemed downright giddy to help. Which could be it's own kind of alienating, but they were always super kind and helpful even with the full "I'm not growing a beard it's just growing on me and I'm lazy" face of hair. I hope it helps quiet some folks' worries. I do live in a student town though, which tends to be more progressive.
Thanks for this guide, I've been looking to get better at it and actually do full face makeup but have been at a loss on where to start

Well this is definitely booked marked, it feels odd as a nearly 50 year old being referred to as a baby trans but hey if the foot fits wear the shoe. Always ued to wear make up of some sort but that was as a raging feminine gay man so never had to worry about colour correcting and just wore what i wanted but now I hate it all and have been trying to find a simple guide that I could understand so yaaaaay :)

I want to do my eyes so bad. I wear mascara everyday and can even do it while driving after 3 months of practice. It’s the eye shadow and liner I just need to mess around with a lot more. I have a strong beard shadow and at this point I’m kind of just fuck it. I’m not trying to pass as cis anyway.

  • @rchewlett

At about 1 minute in you said "I wouldn't pass like this" let me just say that you would. At least as far as I can see. Not that passing is everything (says a trans man that doesn't pass). But you look better that a lot of cis-girls without makeup. My only makeup tip (I rarely use makeup so take my advice with a salt shaker amount of grains of salt) is to not use moisturiser. The lotion tells your skin to absorb what you are feeding it and then you add the makeup on top which makes the skin eat the product. Which is fine if that is what you want but the side effect of that is the skin having blocked pores stuffed with makeup. To remove the built up makeup from your skin you need to wash it off as you normally would and once you can't get anymore makeup off by normal methods then you need to use something with alcohol to get rid of the rest of it. This could be a mouthwash like listerine (original not the free version). Or you could use vinegar (the more acidic the better). Vinegar is also good at killing germs and fungus. This may burn a little but that is good as it is the germs dying. Once your face is cleaned then do your nightly lotioning as normal (I assume). Fake freckles tip; if you put a lite brown liquid bronzer on a toothbrush and use your finger to flick the bristles towards your face you will get a natural splattering of freckles. This takes some practice to not make them to big but once you get it then it can be a faster application than one by one, unless you want to keep the spots in the same place every time. There is more than lipgloss and lipstick. There are also lip pencils and lipstains. Lipstains are really good if you want something that is not going to wear off for a long time and won't come off on a glass. They can be expensive to buy so I always DIY them. It is called liquid lipstick BTW. Sorry this was so long, just trying to help out my sisters.
