I went to Japanese language school in Japan and we had Kanji tests every day, which was really exhausting, although I think they look sooo beautiful...studying Japanese is hard but at the same time also very rewarding and the country, the food..the culture the nature, just A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Love it...;-)

Things I wish I'd known starting:
Make it fun, because consistency is everything
Get basic grammar under your belt
    Start listening ASAP
    Start learning Kanji ASAP
Just simple stuff based on my mistakes and things I've learned.
Honestly I'd say do literally anything that keeps you consistent, as the fastest way to fluency is to not give up.

Especially the Kanji part I want to highly emphasis on for any beginners. Its just insane how many vocabs and words you will be able to recognize and connect with just by knowing one more Kanji.

A few comments (from a non-fluent speaker who studied a long time ago):
    1) Romaji are not a problem in and of themselves. All languages that use the Roman alphabet have widely varying pronunciation systems; the key is to realize that you can't simply read romaji as you would your native language. That said, I certainly agree with your endorsement of learning hiragana and katakana ASAP, as that will immerse the learner into Japanese culture more quickly.
    2) Learning to write kanji correctly is a key element -- STROKE ORDER COUNTS! Natives can tell if you've written something in the incorrect order just by seeing it. I've studied Chinese as well, and even if you think 口 is simply a square, please think again.
    3) Also with kanji: there are multiple ways to pronounce characters: 馬 is uma and 車 is kuruma, but 馬車 is basha. Learning the "on" and "kun" readings of kanji is essential.
One last thing for the study of ANY language: if you're doing it on your own, you need to maintain the motivation to strive through the difficult periods, because they will occur. I always tell my students (I teach German and French) that there are millions of native speakers, and they're not all smarter than you. It's always possible, but it's never easy.
Thank you for your continued hard work on these instructive videos!

That is true about Romanji... I came from English and Spanish and had a working idea that we certainly weren't going to be pronouncing things like in English. I can read half of hiragana now and am still far off from having several of the pronunciations completely correct, no matter how well I know the characters.

@@ruriohama my grandma now 79 years old bless her including her mother's mother (Grandma) is of Okinawan Japanese descent (sort of), well they advised me never to write Romaji alphabets, use it a safe guide for reading because she said latinized characters are not a phonetic tongue language. Basically not be reliant on Romaji to pronounce foreign Katakana words like Comedy, curry Computer and especially the English C words. Lol I can read Hiragana, but struggles to write cursive words they all look like Katakana to me (particularly when I first started writing Japanese when I was 10) . Essentially, learning Japanese is a cobweb, because there is pronunciation inaccuracies due to accented words being mingled. She suggested using Kanji to derive them to learn Hiragana to read or write. It was a massive revelation.

Ruri, It's an absolutely an amazing video, I really appreciate all you advice. As a person be able to use Chinese and English, I am definitely happy to embrace the world of Japanese and study another new language, frankly for me, kenzi is just not a big deal since Chinese based on single Kenzi structure, and I deeply understand that the Kenzi part is absolutely hard for people using a sequence of word to represent a single meaning, the difficulty of Kenzi is actually that it use many single character to combine with an overall meaning. 或许对于中国人来说,我们把对汉字的理解当成理所当然。

    You’re quite impressive! (-:
I lived in Japan for two years and I agree it is extremely boring to learn from a typical Japanese language textbook. I was enrolled in a Japanese language class but it was so excruciatingly boring that I couldn’t even stay awake! So I decided to listen to my Pimsleur Language audios instead and then immediately go out and practice what I’d just learned. Steering a taxi across Kyoto for instance. Going grocery shopping, asking directions, etc. I was amazed that everyone could always understand me clearly. And I was often complimented on my good pronunciation. This was a lot more fun! Pimsleur refers to spaced repetition as ‘Graduated Interval Recall.’ … You learn some new phrases and then you are reminded at specific intervals. For instance: ‘Do you remember how to ask where the hotel is?’ You have to suddenly scan your recent memory for the answer. These questions are asked again at certain spaced intervals. And then the next day you’ll be asked a question about something you learned the day before. This is an amazing method and it effortlessly moves new learning from short term memory over to long term memory.

Honestly, I am a bit skeptical about ready-made flashcards. Creating them by yourself you spend time, but while doing that you also memorize the information, and the kanji written by your own hand will stick to your memory way better than printed out font 😏.

My only goal right now is to watch anime withouth subtittles, so I am not relly focusing on the writing system or the speaking part. Taking those aspects of the language away I am improving my listening skills only. However, I will have to learn those other apects in the future.

Hello Ruri, I'm really interested in learning Japanese (cause I wanna watch anime and read manga without the translation😊) But the thing is that I'm also learning English and Chinese right now. Actually I've learned English for more than 5 years so my English level is definitely higher than my Chinese. I still don't know how to separate appropriate amount of times for each language 🥺. Could u share with us your learning foreign languages timetable? Thank u so much. Follower from VietNam.

It took me like two weeks to be able to write out the Hiragana from memory with no mistakes and another week before I could start reading Japanese words easily with them, and that's after studying for at least an hour a day almost every day. It was just so different that they did not stick in my brain immediately. I'm not so sure other people are just memorizing and reading with them in a single day, if they are saying that I call BS.

    • @arundesu6506

It could be true. I consider myself an average guy, but I memorized Hiragana and Katakana in 3 days. Repetition is the key.
