no one seems to be appreciating the fact that that high note is a FEMALE high G. thats a note that most female singers find extremely challenging. This is incredible.
I never understood why they gave Ariel a skirt that looks just like a fin and then proceeded to also give her an additional fin. Quite a weird costume. I do enjoy Tituss and Sierra, though, so I guess it's a forgivable offense. XD
Molly Daugherty Music Yes!!! I thought I was the only one overanalyzing that. I just saw a High School production yesterday that had a similar skirt that looked like a fin, but they omitted the back fin, and honestly, it looked better and made more sense.
The costumes in this show were a tragedy all around. Some of the worst costume design I've seen on Broadway. The local theaters I've seen do this show have had much better costumes.
Man, it's a good thing Titus wasn't in the Doomsday Cult. Can you imagine? "Under the ground! Under the ground! Darling it's safest Down in the basement Take it from me! Up on the surface people die Under the ground we'll all survive! We weren't captured! This is the rapture! Under the ground!"
Wow...being a Tenor myself...I'm amazed with this man's voice. It's amazing, absolutely stunning. I might have to go see this just to hear more from him. Absolutely stunning!
I've always been so fascinated by live musicals! Can you imagine how much work and practice it must have taken then to perfect all that choreography?! That's true talent! I live in MT so don't really have as much of on opportunity to see many plays. Going to see a few shows on Broadway some day is definitely a bucket list thing for me!
New Broadway shows rehearse for 6 weeks. The entire cast (basically) learns the whole show ground up in that period. Once they enter previews in front of an audience, choreography, blocking, lyrics (probably not in this show though, obvi), and dialogue can change slightly everyday until critics week starts the week before official opening night. So, yeah it’s a ton of work but in a shockingly short time span.
ghostlylighthouses Agreed. I just saw a High School production that did that, and it looked way better than this, where it's strange to have the tail like skirt on her legs and also a tail in the back.
The fact that Tituss wasn’t cast as Sebastian in the live action was an absolute crime. The new version of under the sea it’s lame compared with this masterpiece.
UA-cam videos don't do this enough justice. You don't know how spectacular it truly is to sit on the front row and hear the music in all its glory while watching these amazing people perform. It's breathtaking to say the least.
This is absolutely amazin.... All of the cast is flawlesly superb especially sebastian, as if the whole performance was not already brethtaking but his notes at the end of the song are comepletely mind blowing. These people are not just performing this you can see how much they love what they are doing... Fantastic!
I like Ariel's costume. It can look like she's floating in the water or have her tail sticking straight out. All of the costumes to me look pretty, bright, colorful, and creative. This performance is even better than the movie. I love how they extended the song, made a drum solo, and made the whole cast of "animals" sing too.
@bookgirl1000 His name is Tituss Burgess, and he's AMAZING! I had the enormous pleasure of having a singing class taught by him recently, and he's the teacher I wish I had for my entire life. He has a heart that reaches even higher than his high notes, and made me amaze myself by how well I could sing with just half an hour of his guidance. He's one of the the most amazing persons I've ever met, and I can only hope to be honored by his teaching one more time
honestly cant get enough of this video :') watched it 4 times today already, i LOVE it :D his voice is amazing and that high note? wow so talented :) one day i WILL be in theatres :) X
No really, the staging was terrible. Don't give me that "from a director's point of view" crap. The show was critically panned and was a commercial failure. Everything looked cheap and tacky. There was no magic whatsoever. It was a garbage show, sorry. I love Sierra and Sherie, and I wanted to like the show, but it just wasn't good.
Although, they're both produced by Disney, they have different creative teams. Julie Taymor created the world of the Lion King on stage and not of Little Mermaid. It's just the world from a different perspective. I don't think horrific is accurate when you're comparing two different storylines set in two very differently distinct places.
***** I don't think it's as good either, but works for the audience, I suppose. It's more 'kiddy.' The Lion King used the African tribal aesthetic incredibly well and made the show epic, perhaps moreso than the movie. Julie Taymor, who designed the sets and costumes for TLK, is also a legend. It is difficult to create an undersea effect and keep it serious. They're on roller-skates which creates that fluid undersea motion, but have the drawback of being silly. I personally would have gone a lot darker with the color scheme, used a lot of layered mesh, and gone easy on the frilled pants.
When I was 8, I saw a TLM play in a small theater. It was incredible, the place was all dark and the characters, and the little fish were shown with a black light that made them shine, even I remember the fish swimming around the small audience. I don't know if it would work on bigger places, but definitely it's a good idea.
the set and costumes are perfect love this so much I don't get why everyone (not everyone of course) is being negative. The singer's are the best 1:23 'they get the urge start too play' is amazing also 'hot crustacean band's oh my god I love it so much also the note at 3:01 he has such good key range. anyone else agree
Rick Bok lol, Sebastian actually just has a Caribbean accent (kind of an amalgamation of a few). It's important to note because most Black, indigenous people not born in the Caribbean don't speak like this. Also, there are a lot of non Black people native to these islands who also have accents like this.
Classic Disney movies were my whole childhood. Every time I rewatch them I feel so much love for them in my heart that I always feel like crying. I think I need a life. Or nah.
Went on a trip to New York with my family when I was about 10, had never listened to the broadway version of The Little Mermaid but I had seen the movie. Obviously in the movie the voice actor or Sebastian didn’t hit any of the notes the Broadway Sebastian does. My jaw literally dropped seeing it live on Broadway. Shit was brazy
Am I the only one who loves Sebastian's costume? It's practical, stylish and he wears it incredibly well. Not to mention I enjoy the performance HE'S giving as opposed to doing so through a puppet. All these comparisons to Lion King are really ticking me off. (I see we forgot about Beauty and the Beast.) Seriously. Just cause it's a Disney show doesn't mean they're going to have the same team work on everything. Comparing cultural elements vs. interpretation. Unless you can put your money where your mouth is, I'd keep quiet.
The seaweed is always greener In somebody else's lake You dream about going up there But that is a big mistake Just look at the world around you Right here on the ocean floor Such wonderful things surround you What more is you lookin' for? Titus is always finding himself helping out a red head lol!
who?
+Cescorage he helps kimmy as Titus and he helps ariel as Sebastian
lmao!!
sara khan. - it's a known fact, redheads are a black guy's kryptonite
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!
no one seems to be appreciating the fact that that high note is a FEMALE high G. thats a note that most female singers find extremely challenging. This is incredible.
hello, from 12 years in the future. What do you mean "no one seems to be appreciating"? I'm pretty sure most people appreciate that.
He hit that note straight into the stratosphere....you GO, baby!
tip: set your mouse on minute 3:00 on the video progress. Click every 5-6 seconds
Gave me chills! Imagine if they put him in the movie that would be so awesome
Damn he's got a set of pipes
G5 baby!
This is the weirdest episode of Kimmy Schmidt yet.
haha omg
Are Sare Holy
Are you auditioning for this play at bhs? I am 😂
BAHA
Jajajaajajjaaj
3:01 that's a G5!!! That's higher then most girls can sing!
Or guys
@@eljordinio7647 definitely XD
Even for a tenor, Tituss's high range is exceptional.
Titus finally made it to broadway.
lololollol
PINOTTT NOIRRR
Lmao
Yaaaas
+Maisa Lol It's PEEEENOOOO according to the closed caption on the show, though. lol
An ode to black penis
hahahaha
I never understood why they gave Ariel a skirt that looks just like a fin and then proceeded to also give her an additional fin. Quite a weird costume. I do enjoy Tituss and Sierra, though, so I guess it's a forgivable offense. XD

flounders costume is genius for me instead XD
The costumes in this show were a tragedy all around. Some of the worst costume design I've seen on Broadway. The local theaters I've seen do this show have had much better costumes.
Exactly the fin was too much and crooked
I think they were trying for a “Lion King” thing where you get both the human head acting and the lion mask. It doesn’t quite work here.
Man, it's a good thing Titus wasn't in the Doomsday Cult. Can you imagine?
"Under the ground!
Under the ground!
Darling it's safest
Down in the basement
Take it from me!
Up on the surface people die
Under the ground we'll all survive!
We weren't captured!
This is the rapture!
Under the ground!"
OMG😂
You. Are. Awesome.
Yassssss Kimmy!
These lyrics are fucking genius
+ShayMcSudonim OMG that literally made me cry from laughter!!
2:59 OOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhuuuuunder DA SEA!
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Why did this make me laugh so hard BRUH I'm crying 😂😂😂
Best comment ever XDDDDDDDDDD it killed me
😂😂😂😂😂😂
That was so good though! I would have had my voice cracked and have someone ask wtheck is wrong with me😂😂😭
He kiiiiillls it at 3:00! Wow! what a voice!
He sure does!
He must've had a lot of fun with the role and he made me love the song even more
He must have trained extensively to hit that high note
Having seen this show in person I can defs say this is the best song in the whole show for me. Especially with that high note Sebastian does at 3:01
Ikr
@@kellyerinhannon8288 ikr 🙄
@@averageday Ok um why the eye roll plus I wrote that a year ago soooo- no need to be goofy 🤪
this song won an award, back in '89...this version is even better, the background singers, and sebastian...those voices give me chills!
Wow...being a Tenor myself...I'm amazed with this man's voice. It's amazing, absolutely stunning. I might have to go see this just to hear more from him.
Absolutely stunning!
Not his only role as a bff of a redhead
Diego Soriano 😂😂😂😂😂😂

New Broadway shows rehearse for 6 weeks. The entire cast (basically) learns the whole show ground up in that period. been in many actually lol I love it so much 😊😊😊💕💕💕
Saw this live, we gave a standing ovation after each song!
That’s awesome, but um You’re supposed to do that though lol
Titus living out Titus' dream. Very meta.
is that titus andromedon from unbreakable kimmy schmidt?
Yes it is!
I'm actually obsessed with Tituss.
I want that Sebastian outfit just to wear casually.
HaileSKelassie literally same
HaileSKelassie honestly same
I've been trying to figure out how to make it. It's gonna be TOUGH.
He looks like Billie Ellish-
I would but like, just imagine dancing with that thing on. Like DUDE!
I think the tail would have been better if they cut off the back part, and just had the tail as a skirt type thing.the pattern is gorgeous.
ghostlylighthouses Agreed.
I kinda wanted to see him as Ursula myself
I agree with you totally! This version is so much better than the remake.
Now when I watch this I just want him to burst through that school of fish and scream PINOOOOOOT NOIR!!!!
I don't get it
His vocal range is incomparable! !!!!!
I was not expecting that high note. What a fantastic performance!
Wow....his voice is flawless. Effortless!
that key change!
It's A LOT BETTER isn't it.?. HE HE.!!.
Never mind that, what about that high note at 3:01
Do you mean the one at the key change I mentioned ?🤣🤣
Yup
i still don't get the costume for Ariel it looks wrong
everyone has an opinion. you don't have to be so rude about it.
+Nyah Charles LMFAO, how was she rude about it? You sensitive fuck
I think it looks perfect?
I know she has like 2 tails
I know right?!😁
I’ve been saying this since the idea on the live action came out that he should have played this role
C'mon, 3:00... Is that real life? Awesome!
I love Sebastian's costume! Its cute.
Funny how in his show hes a failed broadway actor but before then he was actually incredibly successful
The music, the dances, the costumes and makeup are all so fun! I LOVE this production, Sierra was beautiful!
Why didn’t they didn’t they get him for the movie?
UA-cam videos don't do this enough justice. You don't know how spectacular it truly is to sit on the front row and hear the music in all its glory while watching these amazing people perform. It's breathtaking to say the least.
Sebastian has an amazing voice--what a range! Thanks for posting.
to be honest, nothing can touch the original animated version, but you cannot doubt that the dude playing Sebastian has a killer set of pipes on him!
That high note Sebastian!!!! ❤️
I love that part at 3:01!!
Mines too! I rewinded it like 100 times lol :)
If
gave me the chills
Me too, favorite part of all the musical :)

3:01 is pure magic.
I saw this show. I was 7 years old and it was so magical❤️❤️❤️
This is amazing, so well done. This is not an easy show to make into a stage version and I think they did it really well.
Sebastian is a GOOD actor. He isn't faking his enjoyment, and his voice is so..full and nice to listen to
That Crab's vocals is so good!! Ursula would have wanted that voice for her collection. Haha.
That what entertaining to watch for me!!! THANK-YOU so much for posting the video :)

I remember seeing this show on Broadway.. it was one of my very first briefest musicals I’ve ever seen.. such an amazing musical this was
Tituss' voice is AMAZING! I mean, come on - that note that starts at 3:00... INCREDIBLE!
Honestly I'd rather watch this than the Superbowl.
I went to this when I was in 7th grade in 2007, and I loved it soooo much :D The scenery was so great, and it made a lasting impression.
Anyone else here after the disastrous live performance with Shaggy?
Me! me! me! me!.. I was just so hurt i had to find other examples😜
Tituss should have been chosen instead of Shaggy, tbh.
Why was it disastrous?
Duhhh
I literally just watched a minute of that and was like, "I need the broadway version now."
It's always amazing to see a tenor hit soprano notes hahaha =D
OMG! the band is amazing :)
This is giving me so many great memory's of playing Sebastian last year.. Miss it so much
Even 11 years later this performance knocks me on my ass, what an iconic talent!
The performance was great but what was with flounders.costume? It looked like a t shirt that had fins taped to them
OMG! Is he Titus from Unbreakable Kimmy?
Aída Jaime yes
lol so glad about this, i had no idea. hilarious.
That was beautiful!
Wow. That note is just so amazing!
As much as I love the cast and most of the songs, what the hell was up with the costuming and staging?
+AlwaysGonnaSing from a directors point of view. Staging was actually very good.

Frankly the set design and costumes are horrific. It can't even hold a candle to Lion King's broadway.

In somebody else's lake
You dream about going up there
But that is a big mistake
Just look at the world around you
Right here on the ocean floor
Such wonderful things surround you
What more is you lookin' for?
Under the sea
Under the sea
Nobody beat us
Fry us and eat us
In fricassee
We what the land folks loves to cook
Under the sea we off the hook
We got no troubles
Life is the bubbles
Under the sea
Under the sea
Since life is sweet here
We got the beat here
Naturally
Even the sturgeon an' the ray
They get the urge 'n' start to play
We got the spirit
You got to hear it
Under the sea
The newt play the flute
The carp play the harp
The plaice play the bass
And they soundin' sharp
The bass play the brass
The chub play the tub
The fluke is the duke of soul
(Yeah)
The ray he can play
The lings on the strings
The trout rockin' out
The blackfish she sings
The smelt and the sprat
They know where it's at
An' oh that blowfish blow
Brilliant!!!
