    You will D.E. coming out of the return lines, sometimes only when the pool first turns on. You will also see grey dirt at the bottom of your pool (that is D.E. that has come back into the pool). You may also have more algae growth do to the filter not working correctly as it is supposed to filter out organic debris but with a leak it works inefficiently. The leak may not be obvious but those are the signs to look for.

    The Stem pipe seal might be broken. It is the white pvc pipe that the stem o-ring sets on. Maybe when you backwash the manifold lifts up and then when you put it in filter mode it settles back down. When you backwash the grids fill with water and expand and maybe it lifts up at that time. I have had one do that before. It looked like one solid piece but the part where the stem o-ring sat was actually unglued from the rest of the pipe. What filter brand is it?

    The spider gasket on the bottom of the multiport valve usually will be the problem. Does DE leak in when you start the pool up too? How much DE are we talking about?
    You replaced all the grids also?

    Glad I could help. This filter configuration is a bit challenging to the Homeowner and us Pool Service Techs too. The engineer who designed it had too much time on his hands.

    I am actually sitting at my computer right now editing a new video. Thanks for the compliment. I try to cut out all the fat and leave just the meat. I will watch my own video several times and cut out the parts that are slow or unnecessary. Very time consuming but I enjoy it. Check out my other videos when you get a chance.

    The D.E you add to the filter needs to go somewhere. If there is no D.E. on the bottom of the pool then it must be leaking out your backwash line. That means the backwash valve is leaking. If it is plumbed into a drain you may not notice it. What type of backwash valve do you have on the filter? Is the pool losing water also?

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    It could be one of three things. Maybe a grid cracked on top when you put the top manifold back on - it happens. Next, I have had a pool with the Standpipe that came unglued right where the part the o-ring sits on attaches to pipe. When the pool turned on it would lift up and then settle back down. I put some pipe glue and problem was solved. I think your problem could be the backwash valve. If an o-ring is worn out it will leak D.E. back into the pool. Is it hard to pull up or push down?

    The amount of DE you are adding is fine. That is a pretty small filter for that size pool. Should be a 48 sq ft DE filter. You can vacuuming after everything settles. You might have to clean your filter again. Backwashing might not do the trick if the grids get clogged. Eventually once it clears you should be able to go 6 months in between cleanings.

    Sounds like there is a lot of organic debris clogging the new grids. Even with a coat of D.E. the organics in the water will clog up the filter. I suggest adding a clarifier like SeaKlear or a Floc Agent to clump up the organic debris in the water. You will have to clean your filter again. How large is your pool - that is a pretty tiny filter.

    Thanks for the videos. I've watched many of them. I got a new rod and lock nuts for my jandy dev 60 filter. What's the best way to replace the old one? Any tricks? How do I know how far it should stick up? Does 1 nut go on either side of the black base? My old one is "rigged" and incorrect. Thanks in advance!

    Between pull the filter apart, I had an idea to get the DE at the bottom of the filter that can not reached with the nozzle. Would a 1/4 inch 4 foot long PVC pipe with holes and a plug at the bottom. Slide the pipe up and down and get the thick stuff at the bottom and flush it out the bottom. I hate trying to put the grid of filter back together every DE flush. DO you think this would work??

    Your videos has helped me get my pool blue again after replacing all the grids on my hayward DE-2400. 24 sq ft. the pool is blue but cloudy. thanks to your video. I put in 5 1lb cofee jugs and after about an hour or so the water flow get slow and the pressure on the filter jumps into the red zone. I have backwashed and it goes back to normal but it does it again after awhile..I'm lost. Im all ears. Thanks

    Great information. Got a question. I have a Pentair FNS Plus 36. I had DE going into the pool. I replaced the manifold with new grids. Also replaced the spider gasket under diverter valve handle. I added 3.6 cups of DE. I then vacuumed up the DE in the pool in filter mode. I am again getting DE in the pool. Someone said it can happen if there is to much DE in the filter. Is that true?

    • @SPL

      Maybe but not common. What about the stem o-ring? Also check that the grid are seated properly under the top manifold.

I taken apart the filter and tripled checked and quadrupled checked filter grids and all rubber gaskets all are ok but all my de still ends up in pool. Right befor I replaced my manifold for one of th newer ones and it work and a month later I had the problem. I have. Hayward 36 sq ft filter for 20k pool. Any suggestions ?

    I have a Jandy DEV-60 and two of the manifolds have cracked on top in the same place, which it seems to do if you let it run dirty with the pressure too high. If that happens, you have to replace the manifold. The other thing I missed the first time around was the O-ring on the upright return pipe that the manifold fits on. I would always have that o-ring on hand.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  6 років тому

      That is a known defect of the Jandy top Manifold. I switch all of mine over to the Hayward top manifold and it holds up much better, The Hayward one fits on their nicely.

    How do I add a drain line to my backwash valve, which is better baracuda 3 or Hayward pool navigator?

  • @morrislutes2158
    @morrislutes2158 9 років тому

    Great Videos! My filter problem is a little different though. We bought an older home with an in ground pool. We have a new Pentair variable speed pump and I've replaced all 8 filters, making sure that the tips line up and the grooves line up, on a Hayward DE 60sqft, with new gaskets and a new O ring with the metal reinforcement (the cheaper O ring without the metal did not seal my old filter system but the new one works great. I also replaced the DE manifold and straw with a sock on it.
    My pressure runs around 12-16 on the dial. When I add Water Clarifier the pressure gets up to 20.
    The problem is that the filter runs for two days and the pool still looks cloudy and murky! I've added 2 lbs of Clorox Extra Blue granules, a bottle of clarifier and 3 lbs of Clorox Shock.The filters do not have much DE or algae, most of it is sitting in the bottom of the pool.
    I did notice that when I have the pump on and I open the backflush valve for ten seconds then close it, my new Baracuda sweeper goes to work like a champion but after a couple of minutes is goes limp because there is no more suction.
    I've "bumped" the backflush a couple of times just to verify the results. Since open the backflush valve does soemting to the pressure, do I need to replace the pressure valve on the top of the Hatward DE Canister? Any other suggestions? Thank you in advance!

      Morris Lutes I'm a hope DIYer and I'm trying to solve this issue myself. I know the grids are bad on mine. I read somewhere that if you don't have enough DE you will leak it. For 60 sqft you need to add 7.5 lbs of DE. Don't be afraid of adding too much. 7.5lbs of DE may seem like a whole lot of DE. Let us know if that helps.

      I changed the DE Elbow O-ring. I had taken the filters out several time s and stretched it Way out of shape! I had my water tested and even though I had 6 lbs of granular chlorine and 3 lbs of shock, there was ZERO free chlorine available! The calcium was 800 (s/b 2-300) and my TDS was over 500. I drained half the pool into the landscaping and refilled.Looking good!
      It's a 30year old 16,000 in ground pool. The skimmer line doesn't work but the vacuum works fine now. I'm taking my water to get tested again later today. I guess as a newbie pool owner I have a lot to learn!
      Thank you again for your help and your informative videos!

    Thanks for your reply. Every time after I backwash and add new DE the entire pool will be covered with DE this is a 60 sq ft filter and a 50000 gallon pool. So far I replaced the top manifold, all 8 grids, stem o-ring on filter, and the spider gasket(glued it down this time). None of that seemed to fix the problem though so I'm confused on what could be. DE only enters the pool after a backwash the entire pool will be coated in DE and a lot of it. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi, I recently had someone put a new suction diverter valve and at the time he was doing the plumbing we noticed some D.E. coming out of the main drains (spa, pool) and from the skimmer. What would cause that??

    • @SPL
      @SPL  11 років тому +1

      That is normal in any kind of repair. Air will get into the filter and D.E. will evacuate when the water returns through the pipes. Once the repair is done and the system is up and running you can vacuum up the D.E. and that will usually be the last of it. If you notice D.E. after that then their could be an issue, but I think it is just related to the repair.

      Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 Thanks for the quick reply!! I must tell you that your videos are awesome....they've really help me a lot. About the DE returning the pool, it had never happened until the repair was done and then it happened again while using the hose vacuum in the spa. There skimmer lid looks clear of any bubbles. I was thinking maybe the gravity is pulling the DE back into the pool.

      It should only be a temporary. If you continue to see D.E. in the pool then their might be a real problem. Maybe call the repair guy back if this continues.

    And so we turn our pump, water flow is good, one hour later, pressure is 5-7 pounds higher (starts at 18 and stops at 24 or 25), and the return shoots out very little water, which means the filter is clogged. How can the filter be clogged with no d.e? You may say that the grids need to be acid washed but I'm telling you're just bought the grids.

    Will the bottom 8 hole manifold on a Purex 2048 simply lift out for replacement? Or is there something holding it in place?

    • @SPL

      Yes. It may feel like it doesn't but it screws out. Usually pretty tight with calcium formed on the threads. Use a pair of Channel locks if needed to start it but turning it counter clockwise will get it out. Then just pull off the bottom manifold.

    So this is my problem: I have. A hayward 36 sq ft filter, we had problems with the grids so we bought new ones. Regarding the amount of DE…..I was told that the size of the sq. Ft determine the amount of DE. For example: 36 sq. Ft =4lbs of DE.
    48 so. Ft= 5 lbs of DE. So who is right?

    Just wondering why you wouldn’t tell your audience that they need to use DE Powder for the Filter when your finished. DR Powder: When diatomaceous earth is introduced into the pool filter system, it coats the filter cloth. As water passes over the filter grids, the DE particles capture even the smallest suspended dirt particles. When cleaning is needed, the water flow is simply reversed

      It could just be residual DE from the old grid assembly. Did it stop after a minute? Or is DE shooting back every time you add DE? The only thing left is that small stem o-ring that the top manifold sets on.
