  • My first attempt at a Coast 2 Coast and my longest ever ride.
Set off from Rawdon at 5am rode to Shipley to catch the 5:30am train to Carlisle. After a large veggie breakfast at Wetherspoons and loads of coffee, I left Carlisle and headed out to Bowness-on-Solway.
On the way out to the west coast I thought I'd planned it right with a bit of a headwind but when I turned around for the 97 miles to Tynemouth I was hit with a sapping headwind. My average speed was respectable but dwindled quickly with the headwind and getting lost multiple times.
My Garmin was great on most of the main roads and lanes, but it kicked me in the guts at Gilsland, it rerouted me up a long climb to a busy road and added 4 extra miles. It also struggled on the lanes around Newcastle which is largely the NCN route 72, often it didn't know which direction to send me in and i had to double back numerous times.
There were a couple of time where I forgot to stick my camera back on after stopping, including up the biggest climb, but managed to get good footage throughout. With all the getting lost I had to get an Uber back to Newcastle and then catch my train to Leeds. From Leeds I caught the train to Apperley Bridge and then rode home to Rawdon for 10pm.
Have you done the Coast to Coast, please comment below or tell me what is your longest ride?
