I think I like Niak 2 tent better. Of course I'm old so I like the extra space to move around...lol. That's why I use a 2 person tent. I'm sure the 1 person tent is a little lighter though.
Exactly, the Niak is way roomier and likely what I use next tour but I'll keep the Enan around for specific moments. I leave it in a box at a friends in case I want to swap along the way.

One of the best video diaries I've seen. I did the West Coast from Vancouver to Mexico in 2014, and the ride from Leggett to Fort Bragg had to be one of the highlights of whole trip. Coming down to the coast after that beautiful climb & drop through dense forest was just stunning. I never get tired of watching other people's experience of this beautiful ride! 🙂

Diego - fabulous job documenting your trip down the Pacific Coast, well done! I made the same trip in 2018 and continue to think about it daily. The vistas and amazing people I met along the way made the experience unforgettable. With the redwood trees and the narrow, winding road from Leggett to the coast, Episode 6 makes me want to pack my panniers and do it all again! Like you, I distinctly recall the relief of the cool ocean breezes as Hwy 1 meets the ocean. Looking forward to the release of episode 7.

This ride just kept giving you spectacular gifts and you captured them all. I especially like the static drone shots which show you do not need to be fancy to share every aspect of the experience.
Great point. I actually do not care for moving drone shots unless the rider is not in the shot. I want the viewer to focus on the scenery and not necessarily on the rider passing thru it.
What an awesome ride you had. I think Redwoods section is one of the best. I'm hoping to ride Redwoods section next year. You're meeting great people on a way 2.5 years on the road. Riding the Pacific coast is awesome, views are incredible, I remember that when I rode from Monterey to San Luis Obispo through Big Sur. Looking forward when you get there. 👍

Bone of the best cycling days in CA. Too bad I didn’t know you were heading down the coast. Could have hosted you in the Bay Area. The forest in the dip after the Legit hill is remarkable in the spring at leaf pop time. Blue flowers color the forest floor. It’s spectacular to hit the coast.

I set it up before I ride by. The drone stays stationary whenever you stop controlling it so I just pick the scene and leave it while I ride. That shot you are talking about was fun to put together. Thanks for watching
Hi Alan. The tent was wet outside where it needed to be but inside was totally dry except for a little bit of condensation. I dry that with the chamois as it happens and always look to open up the entrance door to the tent above to let the moist hot air out. It's certainly not ideal to pack a wet tent because of the added weight so that's why you see me drying it best possible with the chamois before packing it. Even though its gets packed wet, once I open it up that evening it dries up in less than 20 minutes and you are good to go again. One of the best tips is to always string out your tent regardless of wind or not. The strings well tightened will help keep the tent fly from touching the tent body and causing the inside of your tent from getting wet. Thank you for watching

Joining the other comment about the length of the videos. I think I prefer the longer format as well for the reasons you started. It does tell a nicer story. Also, it is more documentary style and like the docuseries you've stated you do. I just wish they are a little more frequent. But, hey, there are trade offs. If you make them more frequent, you'll just be stuck in front of a computer and when it's over, we'll have a lengthy gap between this series and the next series. The best thing to do between episodes is enjoy life and got out there riding 🚲 Last months episode made me add this detour to my dream trip but this episode cemented it in stone. I am still amazed how you take the time to set up the ride by cameras. What filters do you have over your lenses? Are you changing then throughout the day? The video colors are so rich, vibrant with the ocean.
Hi BT. Yeah the longer format stays. If I could ever grow enough I could take more time to edit but for now I am doing the best I can. My daily routine during my guiding season starts at 4 or 5am when I wake up to do editing for a couple of hours before getting on my skiff to spend 10 to 11 hours on the water guiding. When I get in I have been getting on my bike trainer for one hour before eating, sleeping and repeating. I have weekends off so I do more editing than. I'm determined to be in shape before starting the next tour. Im psyched you are adding these last two sections to your tour but I'm afraid you'll be continuing to do so. The episode I am working on now is of riding into San Fransisco. It was a lot of fun. About filters, I don't use any. These cameras do unbelievable work. Canon is especially great at recording warmer footage with setting the aperture accordingly. Also, during this last tour I was riding into the sun so some of the shots were overexposed. I started from episode 1 learning how to correct this with editing so I am slowly learning how to maximize the shots by controlling over exposure when necessary. That's likely what you are noticing. Hi Rick. Thank you for watching and saying nice things about the content. I don't actually use camera mounts on my bike. The footage is taken by holding the camera (GoPro) with my right hand. It has taken lots of miles of doing it to feel comfortable at it and also knowing when to do it. There is also downhill footage that comes from my helmet mount and another GoPro. This footage is the most difficult because you have to keep your head still as possible without turning it at all. I also lift my butt off the seat so the road bumps don't have an effect on the footage. That is two of the four cameras I use to make the content. The other two are a Canon G7X Mark iii that I use for scenic shots, camping scenes, ride bus and such, and the last one is the drone. The four of them capture the story. Hope that helps. Take care
@@FlyscoutRyder Yes, it does help greatly! I am still amazed at the quality of your videos. I am planning a cross country trip next year... something that I have wanted to do for over 50 years. I want to make a video log of it both for myself when I am too old to ride (I am 66), for my grandchildren, and to encourage people to push back the walls of the box that closes in on us as we age. In the past 8 months I have had a hip replaced, prostate remodeled, and just yesterday, some work done on my heart. In between all that, I have managed to ride 1,100 miles including one century ride so I am hot on being ready for next year. By the way... your videos have been a great help in fanning the flames to make that journey... Thanks again!

BRILLIANT! I cannot wait for our south-bound ride in Sept-Oct later this year. I love the stationary drone shots from above to show you & the road below. It seems so far that you are typically in the 45 mile/day range. It's a small difference... but we were hoping to knock out 50/day. Did the availability of campgrounds/State Parks determine your mileage or can we "hope" for 50 per day? Cheers, OC
Hi Chris. You will find camping options to do 50 plus miles per day, The PCBR has lots of them. The thing to consider is the amount of climbing per day that will determine how far you will go but I can see going to 60 miles depending on how hard you cycle and how often you stop to take in the sights. I stop a lot as you can imagine so that is more or less why I ended up with that average. Thanks for watching. Enjoy your tour.

I'm just thinking.... a cargo trailer, single wheel, ... it seems like a good idea to remove all luggage from the bike and load it behind. I'm going to try this.
I'm not so sure I agree with that but folks that use trailers seem to like it. I personally enjoy the feel of a loaded bike. There is a lowering of the center of gravity and you are in a more congealed state than towing a trailer. I think it depends on what you want to carry. Let me know how it goes
Hi Stephen. The CoMotion and I didn't get along. I eventually flew back home after 1,000 miles on it and decided to come back to do the second half of the tour with my old Cannondale. I felt it was way heavier, the Pinion gearbox not as efficient as integrated shifting, and found an uncontrollable front end wobble. I'm currently building a Lynskey titanium bicycle in hopes of having a bike that fits my needs better. I would like to have dual disk breaks and the ability to use wider tires when needed. My Cannondale doesn't allow for it. Thank you for watching and reaching out.
Good video partner. I too sometimes check my tires to make sure they're not rubbing against something. It's weird some days one's bicycle can feel like it rides like the wind, then there are others days not so much!!!!
That is for sure. When Im on a low grade incline I tend to look down at my tires and cassette to see if something is amiss. On an extreme case I will stop and lift the bike up enough to spin the wheels and see if the breaks are rubbing 🙄

That's great that you wait for the right hour to watch the episode. Means a lot to hear that, thank you. Both tents are amazing. They are both dry as can be but the Enan did collect a little bit of condensation during a huge rain storm. Nothing that was significant, though. I always have my chamois and dry up any condensation. The Niak is way roomier so I would say that is my favorite one. It's also way easier to pitch. The weight is significantly more on the Niak but well worth it for most applications. The Enan is so light that it could be a great hiking tent. With both I think I can cover most scenarios. Thanks for checking in.

Great question. When I was building my first touring bike and doing the research on lights I got on the phone with Peter White (peterwhitecycles.com). This website is not only super informative but Peter is really great to get talking to. His touring knowledge is extensive. He explained to me that in Germany, where cycling is huge, they did a lot of research regarding rear lights and found that blinking lights instead of solid "on" tail lights can at times draw a driver towards the cyclist. Something about the staring and fixating on the blinking. So I got the light he recommended and I keep it on all the time. I also keep my front light on. If Im cycling, day or night, my lights are on. They are powered by my front hub. If you want to read the components' list I used to build my Lynskey GR300 you can find it all in the description box of my episodes of season 4. Hello Diego! I discovered your channel a few months ago and have made my way up to your most recent Pacific Coast adventure. Thanks for sharing your ride as well as lessons learned along the way. I have two gear related questions for you. 1) Is the Cane Creek eeSilk seatpost a new addition or have you always used it? If it's new, what drove the decision to install it? 2) I've been intrigued by your shoes since I first noticed them. They sound like clipless when you engage with the pedal, and from the shot in this video they may be Shimano, but I've never seen a pair like them (and I've looked). Looking forward to watching the rest of the trip and your next one.
Hi Tony. Thank you for finding my channel. I've used the eeSilk from the first season on. Cane Creek has upgraded the product and I now use their eeSilk Plus but either way I love it and I think it's a must have. When cycling you are constantly finding rough terrain here and there and almost everywhere so it's nice to have the help. The shoes... They are Shimano MT5's but an older 5 year old generation. I have tried other ones but can't to let go of shoes that have grown on me and have history. They do smell funky at times, I gotta say. I've tried to find a replacement pair but no luck. I do think protecting your feet with shoes is so important. Some people ride with sandals, not safe unless the cyclist is some kind of expert. There is a newer version of the MT5 shoes out there that are similar and I have a pair when my ones finish breaking down. Breaking in a pair of cycling shoes is a fact that has to happen. I like clipping in. I think it's a safety thing. You don't want to slip off your pedals when screaming down a hill, no bueno. It also increases the connectivity between you and the bike. Feels great overall.
I had this Enan one person and wanted to try it out. It's a lot lighter so it welcome in handy someday when I do a more bike packing type of tour. This season of the PCBR was last fall. This next summer/fall tour and season 4 will be from Savanna Georgia to San Francisco zig zagging the southern states. Thank you for watching.
I checked out your equipment list and noticed that the tires you are using have a decent amount of tread on them. Since this appears to be an asphalt trip, is that amount of tread really necessary? Are there roads that are dirt, gravel or limestone? If you went off course, don’t count that. Thx.
These 700x40C Mondial tires I use have that ability to handle about any terrain but are by far more road friendly than off road. The 85 max psi is what I like about them. The tread looks significant but its actually pretty flat in the middle with more knobbiness to the sides. Even though I figure a tour is going to be mostly asphalt I never know if I’ll end up on dirt roads or rail trails. That’s why this tore is so good. Its very versatile. It also has a tough skin that avoids punctures or rips. I add sealant to the tube and I hardly ever have any flats or even loose tire pressure. Thanks for watching the episode. Be safe out there.
This Cannondale doesn't have hydro breaks but the Co-Motion I used for the first half of this tour did. Hydro breaks are really nice but not necessary. The Cannondale has cantilever rear and mechanical disk fronts. I always have spare break pads in case I notice serious wear or if I know I am coming up to some hilly country and the pads are older
@Flyscout Ryder ok cool. I was just wondering how your brake wear was in those mountainous regions. I like that combination that you have on the Cannondale. The simpler the better IMO. Hydraulic brakes are great, but I would imagine that they could be problematic if they need emergency servicing. You have to carry more repair items to deal with that as well.
@@dog-so1vj I'm still on the fence about the hydro breaks but the 1,000 miles I did with them sort of got me thinking it's worth it. They are so responsive and with the loaded bike on a downhill it's nice to know you can stop suddenly as needed. The question is how difficult it could be to repair if needed. I haven't had to do so yet but carry enough oil and a spare tube section with the fittings and tools to do it. A key element to it all is learning how to install the tubing and bleed the system. It really isn't that difficult once you do it a few times. Hope this helps.
@Flyscout Ryder yes, practice makes perfect. I've watched every one of your videos and have gained a wealth of knowledge by doing so. I know it's probably a pain to take the trouble to record a video of yourself having to fix your bike while you're tired and frustrated, but I know I personally appreciate that you did that. It gives anyone considering touring the reality that it's not always perfect. You have to be able to handle all road emergencies. I feel the more that you can handle on the spot, the better off you are. Of course, that requires you to carry more stuff, which equals more weight.
@@dog-so1vj That's all true. More stuff is necessary so it's all about prioritizing what you need. Who I start a tour I make frequent stops at post offices for that reason.
A gorgeous area to go by bike. But there must be better choices of roads than this motorway? Seems really unpleasant, cars blasting past you at top speed.
The Pacific Coast Bike Route is a bit busy. It's likely the most toured route in the United States but it does demand being ok with traffic blasting by you.
Sometime during this season 3 and after this episode I started using Google Maps and Im still using it now into season 4. It is what I use to navigate on my tours and even though I was force to use it actually has grown on me and really like it. On this episode and in all the ones before I used Pixel Studio's Maps 1.1 but after doing an FCPX systems upgrade this Maps 1.1 stopped working. Pixel Studio's has said that they are working on the fix but never did.
I have been pulled over multiple times. Mostly when I ride freeways on the eastern half of the country. This last tour I was pulled over in Oklahoma's Cherokee Parkway. That will be in one of the upcoming episodes.
@FlyscoutRyder I can understand being pulled over on a freeway, where you're not legally supposed to be riding. I guess I was more curious to know about the long routes between cities. Wondering if police pull over to check on you and ask why would someone be out here riding their bike. I'm looking forward to watching the interaction
@@michaelcyr3230 No, I have never been stopped like that. Police are always curious and I always make sure to stop and chat or wave at them so they know I am someone.
This takes me back... to 1989, when I rode from Vancouver BC to San Fran. I spent the night above Garberville, up a winding road. The next day I rode to Van Damme SP. At one point the Avenue of the Giants was closed off, but someone said I could get through, and I had a nice ride for miles with no traffic. I remember catching my first glimpse of the ocean coming down Leggett Hill. You get close to the ocean at the bottom, you can smell it, but you can't see it for quite a while. Then along the coast you had to ride back uphill a bit on these loops that cross the rivers, and a big ol' logging truck caught me on one as I pedaled so close to the edge of the road that my bags were brushing the weeds and shrubs. It was a thrilling day.
The Leggett section of the coastal route is one of the most memorable for those who have done it. It's truly a special passage from being the trees to riding into the crazy scenery of coastal California. Thanks for sharing about your time there. Season 4 starts Jan 2nd.

One of the best video diaries I've seen. I did the West Coast from Vancouver to Mexico in 2014, and the ride from Leggett to Fort Bragg had to be one of the highlights of whole trip. Coming down to the coast after that beautiful climb & drop through dense forest was just stunning.

Great point. I actually do not care for moving drone shots unless the rider is not in the shot. I want the viewer to focus on the scenery and not necessarily on the rider passing thru it.

I set it up before I ride by. The drone stays stationary whenever you stop controlling it so I just pick the scene and leave it while I ride. That shot you are talking about was fun to put together. Thanks for watching
Another great videos, wet tent seems rough.
Hi Alan. The tent was wet outside where it needed to be but inside was totally dry except for a little bit of condensation. I dry that with the chamois as it happens and always look to open up the entrance door to the tent above to let the moist hot air out. It's certainly not ideal to pack a wet tent because of the added weight so that's why you see me drying it best possible with the chamois before packing it. Even though its gets packed wet, once I open it up that evening it dries up in less than 20 minutes and you are good to go again. One of the best tips is to always string out your tent regardless of wind or not. The strings well tightened will help keep the tent fly from touching the tent body and causing the inside of your tent from getting wet. Thank you for watching

Joining the other comment about the length of the videos. I think I prefer the longer format as well for the reasons you started. It does tell a nicer story. Also, it is more documentary style and like the docuseries you've stated you do. I just wish they are a little more frequent. But, hey, there are trade offs. If you make them more frequent, you'll just be stuck in front of a computer and when it's over, we'll have a lengthy gap between this series and the next series. The best thing to do between episodes is enjoy life and got out there riding 🚲
Last months episode made me add this detour to my dream trip but this episode cemented it in stone.
I am still amazed how you take the time to set up the ride by cameras. What filters do you have over your lenses? Are you changing then throughout the day? The video colors are so rich, vibrant with the ocean.

Hi BT. Yeah the longer format stays. If I could ever grow enough I could take more time to edit but for now I am doing the best I can. My daily routine during my guiding season starts at 4 or 5am when I wake up to do editing for a couple of hours before getting on my skiff to spend 10 to 11 hours on the water guiding. When I get in I have been getting on my bike trainer for one hour before eating, sleeping and repeating. I have weekends off so I do more editing than. I'm determined to be in shape before starting the next tour.
Im psyched you are adding these last two sections to your tour but I'm afraid you'll be continuing to do so. The episode I am working on now is of riding into San Fransisco. It was a lot of fun.
About filters, I don't use any. These cameras do unbelievable work. Canon is especially great at recording warmer footage with setting the aperture accordingly. Also, during this last tour I was riding into the sun so some of the shots were overexposed. I started from episode 1 learning how to correct this with editing so I am slowly learning how to maximize the shots by controlling over exposure when necessary. That's likely what you are noticing.

Hi Rick. Thank you for watching and saying nice things about the content. I don't actually use camera mounts on my bike. The footage is taken by holding the camera (GoPro) with my right hand. It has taken lots of miles of doing it to feel comfortable at it and also knowing when to do it. There is also downhill footage that comes from my helmet mount and another GoPro. This footage is the most difficult because you have to keep your head still as possible without turning it at all. I also lift my butt off the seat so the road bumps don't have an effect on the footage. That is two of the four cameras I use to make the content. The other two are a Canon G7X Mark iii that I use for scenic shots, camping scenes, ride bus and such, and the last one is the drone. The four of them capture the story. Hope that helps. Take care

I am planning a cross country trip next year... something that I have wanted to do for over 50 years. I want to make a video log of it both for myself when I am too old to ride (I am 66), for my grandchildren, and to encourage people to push back the walls of the box that closes in on us as we age.
In the past 8 months I have had a hip replaced, prostate remodeled, and just yesterday, some work done on my heart. In between all that, I have managed to ride 1,100 miles including one century ride so I am hot on being ready for next year.
By the way... your videos have been a great help in fanning the flames to make that journey... Thanks again!

It seems so far that you are typically in the 45 mile/day range. It's a small difference... but we were hoping to knock out 50/day. Did the availability of campgrounds/State Parks determine your mileage or can we "hope" for 50 per day? Cheers, OC
Hi Chris. You will find camping options to do 50 plus miles per day, The PCBR has lots of them. The thing to consider is the amount of climbing per day that will determine how far you will go but I can see going to 60 miles depending on how hard you cycle and how often you stop to take in the sights. I stop a lot as you can imagine so that is more or less why I ended up with that average. Thanks for watching. Enjoy your tour.

I'm just thinking.... a cargo trailer, single wheel, ... it seems like a good idea to remove all luggage from the bike and load it behind. I'm going to try this.
I'm not so sure I agree with that but folks that use trailers seem to like it. I personally enjoy the feel of a loaded bike. There is a lowering of the center of gravity and you are in a more congealed state than towing a trailer. I think it depends on what you want to carry. Let me know how it goes

Hi Stephen. The CoMotion and I didn't get along. I eventually flew back home after 1,000 miles on it and decided to come back to do the second half of the tour with my old Cannondale. I felt it was way heavier, the Pinion gearbox not as efficient as integrated shifting, and found an uncontrollable front end wobble. I'm currently building a Lynskey titanium bicycle in hopes of having a bike that fits my needs better. I would like to have dual disk breaks and the ability to use wider tires when needed. My Cannondale doesn't allow for it. Thank you for watching and reaching out.
Good video partner. I too sometimes check my tires to make sure they're not rubbing against something. It's weird some days one's bicycle can feel like it rides like the wind, then there are others days not so much!!!!
That is for sure. When Im on a low grade incline I tend to look down at my tires and cassette to see if something is amiss. On an extreme case I will stop and lift the bike up enough to spin the wheels and see if the breaks are rubbing 🙄

Both tents are amazing. They are both dry as can be but the Enan did collect a little bit of condensation during a huge rain storm. Nothing that was significant, though. I always have my chamois and dry up any condensation. The Niak is way roomier so I would say that is my favorite one. It's also way easier to pitch. The weight is significantly more on the Niak but well worth it for most applications. The Enan is so light that it could be a great hiking tent. With both I think I can cover most scenarios.

Great question. When I was building my first touring bike and doing the research on lights I got on the phone with Peter White (peterwhitecycles.com). This website is not only super informative but Peter is really great to get talking to. His touring knowledge is extensive. He explained to me that in Germany, where cycling is huge, they did a lot of research regarding rear lights and found that blinking lights instead of solid "on" tail lights can at times draw a driver towards the cyclist. Something about the staring and fixating on the blinking. So I got the light he recommended and I keep it on all the time. I also keep my front light on. If Im cycling, day or night, my lights are on. They are powered by my front hub. If you want to read the components' list I used to build my Lynskey GR300 you can find it all in the description box of my episodes of season 4. I have two gear related questions for you.
1) Is the Cane Creek eeSilk seatpost a new addition or have you always used it? If it's new, what drove the decision to install it?
2) I've been intrigued by your shoes since I first noticed them. They sound like clipless when you engage with the pedal, and from the shot in this video they may be Shimano, but I've never seen a pair like them (and I've looked).

I've used the eeSilk from the first season on. Cane Creek has upgraded the product and I now use their eeSilk Plus but either way I love it and I think it's a must have. When cycling you are constantly finding rough terrain here and there and almost everywhere so it's nice to have the help.
The shoes... They are Shimano MT5's but an older 5 year old generation. I have tried other ones but can't to let go of shoes that have grown on me and have history. They do smell funky at times, I gotta say. I've tried to find a replacement pair but no luck. I do think protecting your feet with shoes is so important. Some people ride with sandals, not safe unless the cyclist is some kind of expert. There is a newer version of the MT5 shoes out there that are similar and I have a pair when my ones finish breaking down. Breaking in a pair of cycling shoes is a fact that has to happen. I like clipping in. I think it's a safety thing. You don't want to slip off your pedals when screaming down a hill, no bueno. It also increases the connectivity between you and the bike. Feels great overall.

I had this Enan one person and wanted to try it out. It's a lot lighter so it welcome in handy someday when I do a more bike packing type of tour. This season of the PCBR was last fall. This next summer/fall tour and season 4 will be from Savanna Georgia to San Francisco zig zagging the southern states. Thank you for watching.
I checked out your equipment list and noticed that the tires you are using have a decent amount of tread on them. Since this appears to be an asphalt trip, is that amount of tread really necessary? Are there roads that are dirt, gravel or limestone? If you went off course, don’t count that. Thx.
These 700x40C Mondial tires I use have that ability to handle about any terrain but are by far more road friendly than off road. The 85 max psi is what I like about them. The tread looks significant but its actually pretty flat in the middle with more knobbiness to the sides. Even though I figure a tour is going to be mostly asphalt I never know if I’ll end up on dirt roads or rail trails. That’s why this tore is so good. Its very versatile. It also has a tough skin that avoids punctures or rips. I add sealant to the tube and I hardly ever have any flats or even loose tire pressure. Thanks for watching the episode. Be safe out there.
Do you have hydraulic disc brakes on your bike and did you have to change pads on your tour?
This Cannondale doesn't have hydro breaks but the Co-Motion I used for the first half of this tour did. Hydro breaks are really nice but not necessary. The Cannondale has cantilever rear and mechanical disk fronts. I always have spare break pads in case I notice serious wear or if I know I am coming up to some hilly country and the pads are older
@Flyscout Ryder ok cool. I was just wondering how your brake wear was in those mountainous regions. I like that combination that you have on the Cannondale. The simpler the better IMO. Hydraulic brakes are great, but I would imagine that they could be problematic if they need emergency servicing. You have to carry more repair items to deal with that as well.
@@dog-so1vj I'm still on the fence about the hydro breaks but the 1,000 miles I did with them sort of got me thinking it's worth it. They are so responsive and with the loaded bike on a downhill it's nice to know you can stop suddenly as needed. The question is how difficult it could be to repair if needed. I haven't had to do so yet but carry enough oil and a spare tube section with the fittings and tools to do it. A key element to it all is learning how to install the tubing and bleed the system. It really isn't that difficult once you do it a few times. Hope this helps.
@Flyscout Ryder yes, practice makes perfect. I've watched every one of your videos and have gained a wealth of knowledge by doing so. I know it's probably a pain to take the trouble to record a video of yourself having to fix your bike while you're tired and frustrated, but I know I personally appreciate that you did that. It gives anyone considering touring the reality that it's not always perfect. You have to be able to handle all road emergencies. I feel the more that you can handle on the spot, the better off you are. Of course, that requires you to carry more stuff, which equals more weight.
@@dog-so1vj That's all true. More stuff is necessary so it's all about prioritizing what you need. Who I start a tour I make frequent stops at post offices for that reason.

A gorgeous area to go by bike. But there must be better choices of roads than this motorway? Seems really unpleasant, cars blasting past you at top speed.
The Pacific Coast Bike Route is a bit busy. It's likely the most toured route in the United States but it does demand being ok with traffic blasting by you.
What map you are using ? Google map ?
Sometime during this season 3 and after this episode I started using Google Maps and Im still using it now into season 4. It is what I use to navigate on my tours and even though I was force to use it actually has grown on me and really like it. On this episode and in all the ones before I used Pixel Studio's Maps 1.1 but after doing an FCPX systems upgrade this Maps 1.1 stopped working. Pixel Studio's has said that they are working on the fix but never did.
Have you ever been pulled over by police?
I have been pulled over multiple times. Mostly when I ride freeways on the eastern half of the country. This last tour I was pulled over in Oklahoma's Cherokee Parkway. That will be in one of the upcoming episodes.
@FlyscoutRyder I can understand being pulled over on a freeway, where you're not legally supposed to be riding. I guess I was more curious to know about the long routes between cities. Wondering if police pull over to check on you and ask why would someone be out here riding their bike. I'm looking forward to watching the interaction
@@michaelcyr3230 No, I have never been stopped like that. Police are always curious and I always make sure to stop and chat or wave at them so they know I am someone.

This takes me back... to 1989, when I rode from Vancouver BC to San Fran. I spent the night above Garberville, up a winding road. The next day I rode to Van Damme SP. At one point the Avenue of the Giants was closed off, but someone said I could get through, and I had a nice ride for miles with no traffic. I remember catching my first glimpse of the ocean coming down Leggett Hill. You get close to the ocean at the bottom, you can smell it, but you can't see it for quite a while. Then along the coast you had to ride back uphill a bit on these loops that cross the rivers, and a big ol' logging truck caught me on one as I pedaled so close to the edge of the road that my bags were brushing the weeds and shrubs. It was a thrilling day.
The Leggett section of the coastal route is one of the most memorable for those who have done it. It's truly a special passage from being the trees to riding into the crazy scenery of coastal California. Thanks for sharing about your time there. Season 4 starts Jan 2nd.
