Cycle 5000 Miles
United Kingdom
Приєднався 4 лют 2024
Hi I'm a Leeds based cyclist aiming to ride 5000 miles in 2024. I got back into cycling in lock down when the gyms shut and manages to lose 4 stone. Since then I've tried to cycle every week, even on holiday whether home or abroad. As I tend to cycle on busy roads I bought a camera to capture the near misses, and then another for the near misses I missed. I'll regularly upload these rides showing the local villages, towns, country lanes, potholes and questionable driving in Yorkshire and beyond.
I've Got Questions about Cycling Goals
Hi I need your help!
I've set the goal of cycling 5000 miles in 2024 and as I need 1000 more miles to hit my goal I'm lacking in motivation.
I also wonder what my goal should be next year. If it's a repeat is there any side goals that will help?
Here is a list of the questions I ask in the video, I'd really appreciate you input on as many as possible.
WHAT CYCLING OR EXERCISE GOALS DO YOU SET YOURSELF?
IS IT MORE IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO TARGET SPEED OR DISTANCE?
WHAT DO YOU DO TO WORK AROUND THE WEATHER IN WINTER?
DO YOU FOCUS ON ONE SPORT OR USE MANY TO GAIN FITNESS?
IS FITNESS SECONDARY TO MENTAL HEALTH OR SOCIAL EXERCISE FOR
YOU?
DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR SETTING REACHABLE EXERCISE GOALS?
DO YOU FIND THAT TECH HELPS OR HINDERS YOU IN EXERCISE?
DO YOU EXERCISE ALONE OR FIND THAT BEING WITH OTHERS HELPS?
ARE YOU WANTING TO EXERCISE TO FEEL GOOD OR LOOK GOOD?
HOW DO YOU KEEP MOTIVATED?
HAVE YOU LEARNED ANYTHING FROM NOT HITTING A GOAL?
DO YOU REWARD YOURSELF OR IS EXERCISE REWARD ENOUGH?
WHAT GOALS EXTERNAL TO EXERCISE DO YOU SET TO HELP WITH
EXERCISE?
WHAT HAS BEEN A SIDE BENEFIT OF THE GOALS YOU’VE REACHED?
ARE YOU MORE OF A LONG TERM OR SHORT TERM GOAL SETTER?
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF ABOUT EXERCISE?
WHAT BENEFITS DO YOU THINK AGE WILL BRING TO YOUR TRAINING?
IS IT INDOOR OR OUTDOOR OR BOTH THAT YOU FOCUS ON?
WHAT HAS MOST BENEFIT GOOD DIET, GOOD WEIGHT, GOOD SLEEP?
Please answer as many as you feel comfortable with in the comments and help me keep riding.

An Autumn ride around the Yorkshire countryside, starting in Otley and heading out to Pateley Bridge with my two friends Nathan and Jonathan. Sometimes it's good to get off the busier traffic laden roads and take in the long way around, especially if it's as scenic as Yorkshire. Cycling the Leeds to Liverpool Canal from Esholt

I'm still not riding on the road, so decided to try a new route on my gravel bike around the local area. I set off from Rawdon, down Gill lane in Yeadon, into Yeadon Gill to Esholt, around the sewage works and across a cute but incredibly narrow bridge to the canal. From there I rode through Shipley, Saltaire, into Robert's park and then onto Otley Road. I turned off before the start on Hollins...

After having so many near misses and getting hit by a van, I decide it was time from me to spend some time cycling off the road. Thankfully my local area is full of Bridleways, Towpaths, Country lanes and Forests, so I grabbed my Gravel bike and headed for the hills. I started off in Yeadon, then to West Carlton, into Otley and Danefield Chevin forest. Leaving there on Old Lane, along Yorkgate ...

Cycling from Farnley into the Washburn valley. Epic scenes in North Yorkshire, leg sapping climbs up to top of Norwood Edge then the pay off with a long descent. Took the scenic route along Norwood Bottom Road, onto Jack Hill lane, Maud Lane and Top Lane instead of doing the full Norwood Edge climb. I tried to do the whole ride seated on all the climbs, it's a real test of the hamstrings. Ridde...

My first attempt at a Coast 2 Coast and my longest ever ride. Set off from Rawdon at 5am rode to Shipley to catch the 5:30am train to Carlisle. After a large veggie breakfast at Wetherspoons and loads of coffee, I left Carlisle and headed out to Bowness-on-Solway. No female riders at the National?
Hi, yes of course there were many great riders, young and old, male and female, and those who had disabilities , but I just put pics up for those I’ve seen from last years event or on UA-cam. It wasn’t intended to be a reflection of who was there or who was best.
Good video hope you enjoyed the national I was #356 😎👍
Yeah it was great, second year I've been, did you do the struggle last year? I've got a shot of you, black bike, Solihull CC. You must be pretty decent to have the high number, well done.
How many times a week do try to cycle, be that indoor or outdoor?
part of my fave route as a local lad
Love it around there, rode from there up to Lindley and the gated lane the other day, just stunning in Autumn
I don’t take any notice, if car drivers aren’t shouting at cyclists they shout and argue with other car drivers or motorcyclists or pedestrians 🤡🤣🤣🤣
So true 😆😆
What is your favorite quiet road to ride on?
I thought the music in this video complemented the images well. 👍
Thanks very much, appreciate your initial feedback as well. 🙏
The incident at the beginning with the truck. What a stupid position the cyclist was maintaining, havng been behind the truck, he speeds up to get into the trucks blindspot and sits there. Was the cycist really that clueless or was he hoping for the van to turn left so he could cry victim?
🤦🏼 The cyclist is in a bike lane, the truck was fluctuating in speed, because as he said afterwards he wasn’t concentrating. He didn’t indicate so how someone could hope they would get hit by a truck, or why they would want to I don’t know. 🤷🏼 No cyclist wants to be hit or nearly hit, any reasoning person would understand that.
Can anyone give me advice on what tire pressures to run front and back on gravel bike please?
It depends on tyre width and track surface. With say 40mm tyres I’d start with about 48psi front 53psi rear, and then adjust as seemed appropriate for the surface you’re riding on. These pressures are as suggested by SJS Cycles btw.
@@juub thanks I’ll try that out. I tend to be on mud and grass, but struggle no matter what surface to get out the saddle without spinning the back wheel. Could be a tire tread issue as well.
@@Cycle5000Milesyorkshire If you’re riding tubeless the pressures can, of course, be lower, but on some surfaces/gradients you just won’t have traction.
I ride tubelsss on the road, but these gravel wheels ain’t up to it. I’ll have to justify an upgrade 😆
This is great for exercise and well being... no god if you are heading somewhere in town or running errands... there needs to be more accountability!
Yeah it’s a hard balance to strike, stay healthy and try stay alive/uninjured
Remember Easter,62 heading to the lakes and going through Burley with a saddle bag on with a kettle hanging off the left side and a van driver opening his door and jumping out, the kettle gave him a clout on his arm so I took off as quick as possible with him yelling at me,ho happy days
Ha ha 😝 sounds like your riding should come with a warning, I bet the roads were different then?
@@Cycle5000Milesyorkshire yes drivers were just as bad then no consideration for riders . I must be doing something right as I'm still riding at 78 just had a great ride around botany bay,if I can handle Sydney traffic and still be alive i must be doing something right, see you in Skipton maybe next summer ⛱️
@@alanlumb1327 say hi to Charlie boy and Camilla 😆🤩
Just did almost same loop last week, after Vellebron I went to Caldereta and finished the loop by the Corralejo Dunas roas FV-1
Jealous, it’s throwing it down here. Hope you had a good ride.
Perhaps tone down the music a bit?
Hi thanks for the suggestion. Are you thinking volume or intensity?
@@Cycle5000Milesyorkshire A bit of both, but particularly the volume.
Cheers I’ll take that on board. I like to keep it quite intense as it’s cycling after all, exercise and trying to keep people invested. I can turn the volume down, though I guess the listener ultimately sets the volume. I’ll give it a try on Sunday’s video, let me know what you think.
New vid is up with less intense, quieter music, let me know what you think.
@@Cycle5000Milesyorkshire IMO the music in your latest video was a great improvement, and was sympathetic to the images. I commented on that video to this effect too. 🙂
How do you stay safe whilst cycling?
Go at 4.30 to 5am in the morning.
@@Gericho572 wow is that for recreation or is that your commute?
I treat every moving (or looking to move) car in my vicinity with suspicion and anticipate they will do something dumb yet dangerous for me. After 18 years of cycling along motorised traffic pretty much daily, I have developed a pretty reliable intuition for spotting early situations involving cars, but also other cyclists, which are likely to evolve into trouble for me. I had an accident just like that first one in 2007 - I was undertaking, she didn't indicate, I crashed with the car. Speed was slow, I was wearing a helmet which saved my skull from cracking open, I had fractured my right pinky so badly though, that it took 12 years to heal properly. I take it the rider in this video was a novice and hadn't yet learned to never undertake at a junction, but they will remember now.
@@82vittinteresting, sorry you had a crash. I try to make eye contact with as many drivers as possible, especially at junctions. The rider in the video, me, can’t match the speed of every car that brakes, nor can I realistically not us a bike lane to get around slow traffic. I’ve learned a few lessons, but not the one you’d hoped for.
@@Cycle5000Milesyorkshire recreational 👍
Used to cycle up and down that stretch 20 years ago. Brings back memories, no station then though
It is a great place to ride, and although the train station hasn’t been there long, it feels part of the scene.
Minor point. Opening titles would read easier if long lines come from right. Nice video. I'll try it out next time I'm there.
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll give it a go, cheers.
I’ve tried it in my last two videos, what do you think? 🤔
Nice pal, thanks for sharing.
cheers, thanks for watching and commenting
Good day on the bike that. Good route (when you could find it) well done
Thanks, it was great weather for end of September and beautiful scenes, loved riding up there. Have you done the coast to coast? Garmin can be frustrating at times but hey ho.
@@Cycle5000Milesyorkshire I'm up in Glasgow so, not a local route for me though I have done Carlisle to Edinburgh (Ride to the Sun) which is almost coast to coast. My Wahoo isn't any better. Good most of the time but, when it gets lost, it gets lost
Wow 😮 that’s through the night isn’t it? It keeps the grey matter working when you’re on the look out for signs cos of a reroute. Lots of the cycle lane signs are really sketchy on distance to next location.
These are fairly typical of the low standard of road use in the UK. Undertaking into a bike line @1:27 can be legal as the bike lane is marked with a dashed line rather than a solid one; albeit motorists should give way to cyclists approaching from behind. That said, you were reasonably far back when the motorist committed to the manoeuvre and had the chance to alter your speed to make it a ‘non event’ and aid traffic flow.
The standards of awareness around cyclists is a concern, especially as you’re so exposed on a bike. You’re right I could have altered my speed to a stop, I did actually slow down, the undertake wasn’t really the problem it was that he’d not long passed me, so should have been aware I was coming and then stayed in the lane after the undertake, surprised by my presence. You’re right about the line not being solid, but rule 140 of the Highway Code states…. “Do not drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a broken white line unless it is unavoidable”. I think it was avoidable, he could have waited till the car in front turned right. Appreciate your input and your comment 👍
@@Cycle5000Milesyorkshire yes that is one of the problems with the Highway Code is that statements such as ‘avoidable’ (in this instance) and ‘when safe to do so’ are open to different interpretations. Good luck with the 5000 mile goal. How’s it going?
You're right, interpretation and viewpoint is everything, one minute you're driving through a supermarket car park looking for a spot to park and complaining about the pedestrians, then you get out your car to walk to the entrance, complaining about those driving in the car park!! Thanks, 5000 miles is going okay, I'm a little behind, on mile 3100, need a dry winter, but think I live in the wrong place for that!
@@Cycle5000Milesyorkshire I know what you mean about the weather, I’m just south of you in Lincolnshire. Managed a Century ride yesterday in the cold and squally rain showers and finished in a thunderstorm. The bike needs a good clean!
Wow, 100km or 100miles? I went out today, did 45 miles, it was glorious when I set off, 10 miles in it started raining 🤦🏼. Are you planning any more rides abroad?
Absolutely phenomenal
I feel for you mate fu.king idiots hope you reported them all.
2:05 should be a ban
Just spotted myself being rapidly overtaken at 19:07. The handlebar mirror and non-derailleur chainline are a bit of a giveaway. 😃
Looking resplendent in orange 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
I did that ride! Took a wrong turn right at the start (inside the barrack grounds) and ended up doing an extra 3 or 4 miles. Stalled on Brootes lane but got going again. Stalled 3 times on Park Rash, but got going again, once with the help of a push from the photographer, and managed to ride the whole climb. Did have to get off and walk for about 50 or 100 yds on Two Stoops. Learned quite early on that the sounds of cow bells wasn't necessarily a good thing 😁🥵. I was 68 then and it was my longest ride ever. Ended up with a time of 9h 27m, 10h 21m elapsed time. An absolutely epic day out on the bike, with a real sense of achievement at the end. I even enjoyed most of it! It's certainly well named. I might have been the only person riding hub gears.
Well done. Oh no what an awful way to start. That's an awesome time with the added mileage and the stops. I cramped up after Malham and again on Park Rash and finally after the final feed station. Nothing prepares the mind for Park Rash. Are you doing it again this year, it's in reverse this time, imagine going down Park Rash? I might do the Struggle Moors this year, although Rosedale Chimney Bank isn't inspiring me. Have you watched Part 2? Part 3 goes up in 5 mins. I know what you mean with the cow bells, PTSD a day later.
Very scenic. I slowed the uphill bits down to 0.5x so if felt more familiar to me. Was disappointed to see that you didn't test your brakes as instructed at 10:23
It was the only dry morning, weather not booze, I looked down and saw I had rim brakes and that they’d be completely useless 😆😆
3:21 is best part
It’s certainly different 😵💫
Very impressed with the thumbnail.
It’s very on topic isn’t it 😆
Can we have a video with live commentary, educating us about the area in the style of the tour de France commentary? 🚵
I’ll start saving for the helicopter and bush up on my local chateaux knowledge 😜
No
You’re probably right, why do you think that is?
Amazing vid 👏🏼 can't believe how crazy drivers can be sometimes
thanks, yeah you're right, takes the joy out of cycling sometimes. Badminton is safer 😂
