    Been using SonarWorks with included calibration profile on WH1000XM2 headphones, amazing difference. The Air and Sound-stage (for Audiophiles) noticeably improved as well. The calibration profile brings the frequency response curve to +/- 1 db of flat, love it.

    Hi. Fantastic HPs. Got them too too re-check in my studio especially the bass parts. But it's a great HP to enjoy music from a good amp and CD player. Can listen for hours on it without fatigue. Have joy and be sound.

    I love your initial reaction when you put the headphones on :D "ooh, oooh!! Wow!".
    I think unboxings are fun to watch, because we get to feel a bit like we're unboxing it by ourselves.
    Also: it gives a nice insight into what you get in there package, which is not always obvious.

    I got a pair of these. They do sound amazing. Comfort and build quality on top of that justify the eye-watering price for me. Could I go back to something more affordable? No, in a word. You do need a headphone amp to make them work properly though, they sound weak sauce straight from the AI or computer mini-jack compared to with an amp. They're high impedance I think, prolly why. They sound astonishing plugged directly into my Kemper. Which is bad in a way 'cos I can't get quite the same sound via my AI and Cubase (although I dare say you prolly could of course). Gonna be interested in this Sonar whatever-it-is business when you get round to it.

      1234gregor I have a Focus rite 2i4 2nd gen. Do I still need an amp? If so how do I connect an Amp thru a audio interface at the same time?

    • @1ofsolitude
      @1ofsolitude 5 років тому

      Does your ada converter (audio interface) not have a headphone amp built in to it? Or is rhat the kemper is? Just curious✌

    • @Gregorovitch144
      @Gregorovitch144 5 років тому

      I had a Focusrite 2i2 until recently, now I got a 6i6. The 2i2 had phono (line out) sockets so I could just use a standard hi-fi phone cable straight into my headphone amp. The 6i6 doesn't have phono output sockets, only 1/4 inch jacks, so I got a pair of 1/4 inch-to-phone cables from my local music store.
      Both the 2i2 and the 6i6 proved to be weak sauce with the HD650s, this is dispite the fact that the 6i6 has it's own separate mains power supply (via trasnformer of course). My understanding of this situation (which I may be wrong about of course) is that the HD650 is bascially designed as an audiophile hi-fi headphone and therfore high impedence. Now a lot of people will be buying an AI and plug their low impedence headphones they normally use with their computer into it (low impedence 'cos expecting minisule USB/3.5mm jack level power) and if the 2i2 for example could kick out a headphone signal level that could drive HD650's and the like then on standard comupter oriented low impedence phones it would literally blow their eardrums out if they used that setting by accident say. Possibly permanent damage from one blast.
      My reading is the good folks at Focusrite decided that wasn't such a good idea. Too risky, so no high impedence headphone setting or amp. Or maybe they think thaqt real pros only use headhpones at low volumes anyway. Which is probably true.
      I was really disappointed with my HD650's initiallyt until I worked this out and got my headphone amp. When I did get it the diference was staggering.
      As to the Kemper, I don't know why it's both so good and so loud over headhpones. I never run it more than 50% volume and udually less than that, but I do know that it is much, much louder than even my headphone amp. Maybe they're simply not so risk averse. Or maybe they didn't think of it. Dunno.

      Sennheiser HD 600 are more neutral, so they will be better for mixing and mastering

    • @kloug2006
      @kloug2006 5 років тому

      The 600 are one of the most neutral headphones ever made, with an almost perfect midrange, nice refined treble extension but they do lack a bit in bass impact and extension. 650 has a warmer midrange and a similarly refined treble, but even if the bass on 650 is a little warmer, they also lack in impact and extension. That said, they are still today among the best choice in their class, along with Hifiman HE400i, beyerdynamic DT990 PRO and AKG K702 65th Anniversary Edition. I would go for the 600 with their more neutral sound signature.

    Please watch the health and safety video! You need those fingers! But yes, I have those, they are very nice indeed! They actually sound a little like my KH-120 monitors, kind of a family sound which is very comfortable and natural, with a marvelous clarity - still they reveal quite different things when actually mixing, certain aspects come into focus - I wouldn't bet on a mix done on these alone sounding 'right' when played back on the mains - however with the EQ who knows? Good luck with it!

    These puppies are 300 ohm headphones, but their high efficiency makes them sound good enough straight out of a phone/laptop. They do benefit from a good headphone amp.

    I have a lot of experience with the HD650 and i will say they absolutely need a headphone amplifier. The built in amplifier in a macbook pro won't do them any justice. If you want to get the most out of them, take a look over at head-fi.org and read up on them. They're very highly regarded, but they absolutely need more power than a laptop or mobile device can provide. Enjoy them!

      Well yeah, they don't work for music that has mostly bass. They are geared towards listeners that like the full spectrum of music equally, from 20Hz to 20kHz. I would say they have very accurate amounts of bass, but will sound boring if you only expect bass to come out of them...

    My god you are inexperienced with headphones! Jumping from the HD25 to the HD650 is a huge step up. The two actually don't even belong in the same sentence. I may not be an authority on audio, but I can tell you the headphone world is vast and much more varied than you can imagine.
    By the way, the headphones being expensive doesn't necessarily mean they are good. Just a popular example: the Beats Pro are ridiculously expensive, but they deliver really mediocre sound quality.
    If you are interested in learning more about the good, the bad and the ugly in the headphone world, we could meet up sometime, if you happen to live somewhere in the Randstad. I like audio in general and I'm an engineer of sorts, so there is definitely enough we could talk about on that respect already.

    • @Catandbeats
      @Catandbeats 5 років тому +1

      Why is he inexperienced? He literally made an unboxing video with a quick first reaction. Not meant to attack you btw, just curiosity on why

    • @Small_Vocaloid_UTAU
      @Small_Vocaloid_UTAU 5 років тому +1

      First of all, let me make clear that I wasn't trying to make him look stupid, or anything of the sort. I was simply quite surprised because he seems to know a thing or two about audio and he was blown away like that with the Sennheiser HD650, which despite being wonderful headphones, still are basically a 25+ years old design. At their price point, they stayed competitive for a very long time, but in recent years there has been an explosion in technological development.
      Watching his reaction to the HD650 and him saying that it seems that there is like a separate subwoofer makes it clear to me he hasn't had previous experience with any of the good modern headphones. The HD650 are not known for their bass extension, but for their silky smooth vocals. At a similar price point, there are the HiFiMan HE-400i, or the HiFiMan Sundara, which are much better known for their bass response.
      In the past I used to have Sennheiser HD-25, just like the ones he had. These are built like taks, which makes them great for bringing to concerts and not being concerned about damaging them, but the design itself doesn't allow for a good soundstage, imaging or extension in the bass region. The HD650 is meant to be used in a studio environment and I am glad to see he has now seen how much difference a design philosophy can make.

    • @Leonhart_93
      @Leonhart_93 5 років тому +1

      Don't know about that. Someone that hasn't ever heard very high-end headphones won't know to instantly appreciate the difference between the 600 line and 1000$+ headphones (I know I couldn't). Therefore, middle priced headphones are best for new people, since they won't have the guilt of having spent a bag of money on something that doesn't blow their brains out with the first 2 notes they hear.

      @Leonhart_93 5 років тому +1

      @heavymetalmixer91 You are misinformed, hopefully you haven't heard that from any "hardcore" elitist audiophile. The room treatment is only related to speakers, not headphones and the room you listen in is irrelevant when it comes to open back headphones. Basically, open back headphones are for less resonances and seashell effects inside the cups (therefore they sound more natural).
      The room treatment thing is important (relatively) for speakers because a large portion of the sound you hear from speakers comes from walls reflections, rather than the direct speaker itself. Obviously, you don't count on wall reflections to enhance your headphone listening experience....

    It's time we dump the "you have to mix in the sweetsspot with monitors" ruls. Headphones were the big jump in music listening when they came out. They provide the most immersive experience. People mixing on monitors with $250K consoles are just audio masturbators. They are pleasing themselves, but no one else is sharing in the experience. There is simply no way to get what they are hearing into the ears of their audience, and the minute details over which they agonize are completely lost either in compression, in the hardware, or on the ears of the listeners who grew up with CDs at best and mp3s at worst. Sonarworks' headphone calibration tool is headed in the right direction, but it's still an overpriced piece of junk at this point. It does do a good job as a plugin for a headphone mixing or monitoring buss with a flat frequency response, but the Systemwide app makes the headphone output about 50% of volume, even with everything maxed out and Safe Headroom turned off, making it a worthless feature. So, it's overpriced at $99. I don't need 40 different profiles. The would make a lot more money if they gave away the host and charged $10 a profile. That pretty much everyone will buy it, and every time they upgrade their headphones, Sonoworks gets another $10 instead of the big fat 0 that I'd pay for the product as is. What they really need to do to make it worth the price is have a free calibration tool like they use at mynoise.net for making grey noise (this is a brilliant idea). They have sliders across the frequency range, and you use your listening setup to adjust each band until you can just barely hear it. This way, it's calibrated not just to your hardware, but to your hearing. Sonarworks should let you buy your personal calibration curve for a couple of bucks. Then they could sell a Pro version for $100 that takes your calibrated headphone profile and adjusts it to the average curve of other headphones and earbuds so that you can hear how the mix will sound when people are listening through crappy Apple bluetooth earbuds, for example.. Obviously you're not gonna be able to use calibrated earbuds to hear how your stuff will sound on Sennheiser HD650 cans, but it could work the other way around. The way Sonarworks' headphone calibration works now is pure Snake Oil. And the room calibrator with the mic is a scam. It should be your ears, not a mic, that is used to calibrate. Check out mynoise.net and see what how they do it. Makes so much more sense! They just need more bands, and a way to do it at more sound pressure levels. Like you start with a curve that represents the lowest level you can hear each band, then, they need to make your grey noise at a higher level and then have you adjust the level of the bands at several sound pressure levels by having you set the bands where a burst at a certain frequency becomes audible above the noise bed. I think this could be a really useful way to calibrate everything. I'm going to talk to some developers and try to get something like that going, because Reference 4 is just Snake Oil.
