For me it is easier to mark each plug where it goes before removal with a pen and some tape, then remove tape one the harness install is complete. I do the same thing working on my jets. I thought I would share this tip, hopefully it helps out. Safe travels gentlemen.
Well done. Whilst you have a reference bike in the workshop plenty of photos has assited me in rebuilding my BMW f650. Particularly with cable routing and fixing.

Hi Wolfgang - we had this engine at a specialist (it is not from my motorcycle by the way - this was Stephans KTM - mine had an engine damage and was replaced by KTM) - I know engine issues are typically rare with the 1290 series and the camshafts are usually not the problem. We were curious and just asked the question about what is bothering the 790/890 engines as no "really" seems to know. As far as I know KTM has already acknowledged that there is an issue. ua-cam.com/video/SBp99gf0OoA/v-deo.html For this particual engine we also do not really know what the problem was - it is hard to read of the parts that you remove. Stephan's guess was that this came from a service mistake as the engine oil was overfilled - somehow this could have impacted the lubrication for the engine resulting in poor lubrication later on - but like I said no one really knows. The engine sounded pretty bad especiall after startup as you can see in the beginning of this video ua-cam.com/video/2XFdmWZnmuo/v-deo.html Since I had the engine issues with my own 1290 SAR last year I was especially curious to assist with removing, rebuilting and installing Stephan's engine on his 1290 SAS and I thought this would be interesting for others too. Despite my critical engine damage last year I just bought by 4th KTM 1290 Super Adventure a few weeks ago for next season. @@wolfganglueger1691 In my case the engine was fixed with a brand new engine, so I have no complaints on that end. I probably put a lot more kilomoters on my motorcycles than most 1290 riders - I have ridden 130k km with my last 3 1290 SA combined in the past 7 years. My KTM dealer gave me a good deal on my new 1290 - it is the R version again. I tend to sell the bikes between 40-50k km. Not because there is anything wrong with them - I just don't think motorcycles sell really well with much more km than that.

The only thing, having a 23' r1250rt, not sure if i should have two such big bikes, because experience tell me i can just ride one at a time. ;-) For me though, started with LC4 KTMs decades ago, it would be some kind of a solidarity act with our struggling but still beloved brand. There have been a lot of posts about KTM and some issues within the Oil rail that resultet in insufficient lubrication of the cams - hope it is fixed on yours now - otherwise now you know how to change the engine - great video👌

The oil pump needed replacing- the rest was replaced since engine was open already
