Been subscribed to CV for a while with the intention of watching some episodes but never really had the time. With Sven's passing I've now been watching his episodes and it's extraordinary - when he talks I listen intently. Seemed like a great person. Could sit and listen to him for hours. RIP Sven.

Just because his English isn't the best don't underestimate him as a coach. What we see in TV interviews shows 1% of the actual person and his skills as a coach.
Remember that game so well. England were always constantly looking to get Owen into space and areas that he could shoot, because you just knew that the chances were so high. He was fatal.

Agreed. Football is a simple game really. Erikson is a testimony of this - he is a calm friendly man, his role was man management. The players train all day all life from young age. They don't need tactical schemes and over the top planning. They just need clear vision, guidance and tranquility

His tactics were very basic and simplistic by today's standards, stuck to 442, but it got the work done. His strength as a coach was always to recruit and combine players who work in harmony with each other, covering each others weaknesses and lifting each others strength. Encouraging players to specialize themselves to only do what they are individually good at instead of trying to be equally good at everything.

@@g8le cause his tactics ARE simplistic by todays standards. But revolutionary for its time back in the 70s-80's. I've heard Svennis speak countless of hours in podcasts and interviews and it's clear that he doesn't really have in depth understanding of the details of modern tactics. He said so himself that 4-4-2 is only way he knows how to play. His assistant Tord Grip was the real technical tactician while Svennis more went with simplicity, gut feeling and creating psycological harmony among the players which he was a genious at.

There was always a debate in England, "how do we get the best out of Gerrard and Lampard?" The answer was simple! play someone behind them, like Hargreaves, Carrick, or Scholes. Instead we had to see Fabio Capello trying ro play Gerrard in LM in a 4-4-2

Boi Boi the football England played was so so so boring and mediocre. The team never looked like scoring- I guess people expected more and a team which didn’t let matches go to penalties.
Because he played Paul Scholes out of position on the left, kept with a rigid 4-4-2 and didn't have the common sense to play Hargreaves as a DM, dropping either Lampard or Gerrard. His strategy was to shove as many big-name players as possible into a conventional formation and hope for the best, thereby removing the need to make any hard decisions. He's a massive grifter.

England's failures had nothing to do with Sven, they were simply not good enough. This kind of game killed England. 4-4-2 is basic. Every pro coach and player know very well about strength and weakness of 4-4-2. After having a win like this, England squad and coach believed that they gonna win World Cup with 4-4-2. Not gonna happen in 21 century. Even when you have scholes, beckham, lampard, Gerrard, Rooney.

That is true, but I also think that many coaches can learn from Eriksson when it comes to mental coaching. He was a great boss.
