Not sure if you are sarcastic, but you are right. In japan being shameful of what you did is considered being disrespectful. Its very complicated. This is also one of the reasons Japan has high rates of suicides, most of the suicides come from shame.

I've studied Japanese culture for many years and I've developed a certain understanding of their social norms (and the Japanese _love_ social norms). I get that generally they're all about societal harmony, and anything that breaks that harmony is looked on with discomfort. Something like this certainly breaks a little of that harmony, so it's looked on as unusual for a Japanese person to do. Westerners, by contrast, give no fucks about doing something like this. While we might think it's a little weird, we mostly wouldn't care or we'd think it's cool.
