You missed a real gem where “Trigger Warnings” in dark romance books are being sensationalised to the extent that if a dark romance book has trigger warnings, it is used to PROMOTE the book. And the more trigger warnings, the more hit a book is.

As someone who has been stalked, and assaulted, it boils my blood when Booktok “girlies” find out and say: “Woww, that’s so romantic. Partner goals. 😍 “ OR when they say, “It’s not affecting anyone in real life.” Really, Tiffany? Really? Because your younger sister thinks it’s ok, and cute, and romantic, when a guy is LITERALLY 👏 STALKING 👏 HER AND PUTTING HER SAFETY AT RISK!! I'm probably a bit late for the discussion, but also as an Italian it's so disturbing to see how many italian mafia boss smut books are out there. Not to mention that some English authors use Italian words in the middle of the dialogue, and that's okay but no Italian will ever say those words in that context 😭
I cringed so hard when I saw a reel where the guy called his love interest "bambina", which is technically the correct literal translation but it's not the same as calling someone "baby" in English, idk it just sounds weird. It's used for example if you're a girl and your parents would say to someone "lei è la mia bambina (she's my [female] child/baby)."
But that word is never used in a sexy way!
I heard italian couples calling each other "bimbo/bimba" instead, which is a cuter version of "bambino/bambina", and that's way better and more accurate to the English "baby". Because if a guy ever called me "bambina" in a sexy way, I would think he's insane 😭

I just want to comment that today, a lot of books that are labeled as "Dark Romance" can't be defined as "Romance" because they are more like a psychological (horror) thriller. A healthy relationship in an actual Dark Romance novel will never come with romanticizing abuse. The male protagonist can be the world's most dangerous man, but the moment he hurts his love interest in any way or purposefully oversteps her boundaries, it's not "Romance" per definition, but straight up abuse. It's so sad to see how "Dark Romance" has become a synonym for abuse and toxic relationships just because it sells well this way.

A few years ago, booktok was mostly about (YA) fantasy novels that included fairies, magic, worldbuilding... all the good stuff. Like the cruel prince, six of crows, percy jackson, the song of achilles (not nesecarily fantasy but whatever). There were ofcourse other 'sides' of booktok, but i feel like this fantasy genre definitly dominated most of tiktok, and it was awesome. It was so fun and people got really creative with making book recommendations, making fanart, cosplaying etc. (Great example is shots by sophia, who is doing gods work still). It was just all about this magical and immersive stories and how they made people feel. Now booktok is... people bragging about how much smut there is in a book. Everyone is entitled to their own preference, but i miss the time were it wasnt just about the smut but about the story. Booktok now is so different from what it originally was and that pains me. Please look up some old booktok compilations or something on yt from booktok, just so know it wasnt always like this.

I saw a video of a woman calling smut books "fun” and saying that anybody who refused to read said "fun” books was too prestigious. I’m not prestigious AT ALL. It’s just that my taste involves classic literature! And when I do read non-classic shit, it’s still not smut, because I just don’t like smut. I’m a child rape and exploitation victim… I get triggered reading SA scenes, so these people who act like anybody who hates dark romance is boring piss me off. People can read what the hell they want, but I do believe that if you are choosing to read books where they are romancing sexual assault , you need help just due to the fact that you’re not having a good mindset to have. I've read some of these books, and OMG. I can't believe how much corn these books have. The bad thing is that these books have very “cute” and “YA” covers. I honestly thought Icebreaker was a cute YA romance. But after seeing people mention how “spicy” this book was. I was immediately concerned for the YA readers.
Some people share actual YA, and the booktok community immediately recommend “actual” YA books. Most of the books they recommend are all 18+ Or even 21+. It’s hard to say this, but most of these people are touch-deprived.
I still remember when a popular booktok content creator. She harassed a famous hockey player who had the exact resemblance to one of the characters she had read in a book romance. The wife of a popular hockey player had spoken up, and she immediately “defended” herself, saying it was a joke and to not take it personally as it was just a book girlie crush. She went to a few games and screamed some very inappropriate things at some of the players, and it was honestly disgusting. Another thing goes with people who share the content of their bikes, and booktok community quickly go and harass them.

What's the difference between 18+ and 21+ for reading a damn book lol. A lot of the people in these comments seem really sex averse for some reason. Smutty books have always existed and teens are going to be exposed to it in one form or another. You can't shelter them from every possible thing you think may damage them because it has some type of sexuality involved. It reminds me of the arguments back in the 90s of how video games were corrupting the youth and causing mass shooters. Y'all really just clutching pearls here and it's kinda hilarious.
Not really shocking when you see stuff like this and then read studies showing gen z is having way less sex than any other generation.
For instance, y'all can't even say the word "porn". You self censor.

I heard the saying that 🌶️ booktok is the female equivalent of men with severe porn addictions and I can’t agree more. It even got so bad where they sexually harassed a real life hockey player and don’t understand the boundaries between fiction and reality.
Btw the concept of werewolf romance seems cool but probably since I’ve been interested in werewolves since I was a kid and want to write about them someday (most likely sfw things tho).

With the Alex Wennberg situation a lot of them treated his harassment like a funny joke and they’ve even tried to get a 16 year old boy to try and read smut. More awareness needs to be raised of this because this extreme behavior is harmful and not normal at all.

Meanwhile, many non-smut authors are like "oh, I'll try booktok"....and often get nowhere. Crickets. Very sad. And, it is indeed very concerning some of these dark romance tropes and how young much of the audience is. Or, you know, Colleen Hoover, whose books are ....kind of regular romance? But with every single male lead a walking red flag....multiple red flags....a red flag convention, if you will....she was one of the first authors to blow up on tiktok, and every girl in my husband's high school English class reads and loves her books, which honestly horrifies me. "Boyfriend goals" should not be a guy who was responsible for burning down the female lead's family home, which also left her scarred, and the guy also gets off on her scars....like WTAF. Censoring things for adults who get the difference....because of kids who’s parents are not paying attention is wild. 💀 That is why I see the joke often “ I like in books what I don’t like in real life”. Many readers of smut are in committed relationships....which makes sense since more than half of the US pop who are women are paired up with someone. And obviously my personal opinion isn't going to stop anyone from their reading choices. I am not here to kink shame or erotica shame, but my personal opinion is also not going to change when I think there are far better books out there for them to be reading than Hoover's. And I'm not sure where the YA vs. adult fiction came into this. Hoover is not considered a YA author. Genres are all marketing tools anyway. In indie author land, anyone can publish anything and consider it whatever genre they want....doesn't mean it will SELL in that genre, since it still has to meet certain tropes to hit with readers. No one is forcing women into any boxes in indie author land.

Believe it or not, there was a time where booktok was actually normal. During the pandemic, a lot of people got into different activities, reading being a huge one. Booktok rose to popularity mostly because they did give good book recommendations and sometimes would even dress as the characters. A lot of videos about “convincing you to read *_____* based on the aesthetic of it” were especially popular because the visual representation of the book was alluring! Since those days of happy rom coms, light fantasy, suspenseful dystopian, or basically anything to mark the best era of what booktok was, it has devolved into what was discussed in the video. I wrote an essay once on the treatment of female characters in the YA genre. The YA genre is typically made by and for preteen to adult women, and, despite being a place of female dominance, still exhibits misogyny (as it is often a learned trait).
I mentioned older books, like Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments series, as well as ACOTAR by Sarah J Maas. I was the most biased towards ACOTAR, tbh. The main heroine's (Feyre) first lover (Tamlin) was abusive, and she was saved from this abuse by another man (Rhysand) abducting her, who was her next lover. A lot of her political power came from her role as the men's' partners. She hates on one of the other woman (Ianthe) in the book, who is shown as a hyper-feminine, hyper sexual, beautiful yet evil woman. Another female character (Mor), who is remarked as being the most beautiful woman to exist in the world of the story, was raped. Point being: the woman in this story found purpose through the men they were connected to, as opposed to finding something personal in themselves; they were not allowed to be beautiful or freely sexual unless they served a misogynistic purpose of hating other women or serving as a victim of a man.
Anyways, TikTok's audience is also largely younger generations, and booktok is still largely supported by women. My point with my essay is the same here: what do we teach adolescent women when we advertise and support material to them that is misogynistic, and in the case of bookTok, unhealthy and obsessive and weird? I do not have any examples of books from bookTok that I can rant about, but I will share some of my favorite normal books, and some do have intentionally feminist themes:
The Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon - 800ish page fantasy epic that explores four main pov's of characters from vastly different cultures that all exist in the same world. In this lore, things like queerness and racism aren't a thing in that they are accepted as completely normal human things that exist, so they are not remarked upon. The cast is diverse in identity, looks, culture, and in age. One of the main characters is an older sapphic woman in a long-term relationship with another woman; another character is asexual and very strong in personality (she is my favorite); another character is gay with gay parents. Another book in the series has a disabled character. TLDR, diverse cast in a good fantasy epic. Cannot hype it enough.
Skyward Sword by Brandon Sanderson - easily read (seriously, accessible writing style and language) sci-fy fantasy about a girl who wants to be a pilot to protect her home planet from alien invaders. Very strong willed and positively weird and unique lady. I really loved seeing her mature over the course of the book and still stay true to herself.
Circe by Madeline Miller - retelling of Circe from Greek mythology. I really enjoyed this because it felt so real. Its an exploration of a woman's not so perfect life. She is good and bad, she has love and hate. I also enjoyed how alone she was. It was quite comforting to read how she found power and purpose for herself by herself.

Booktok is seriously so odd. I really love to read, and some time ago, I wanted to look at some romance recommendations because I don't read it often and was looking to branch out. But it's so concerning how abuse and these really horrific situations are masked as dark romances and things like that - -so many videos that I found were recommending some really worrying books and romanticising things like stalking and even rape. And if someone pointed out any issues, they would be bormabarded with people saying that it's "just fiction". It just worries me with how normalised these things are becoming and how desensitised some are.

Omg LITERALLY ITS CRAZY 😭😭😭 This comment section has made me feel better tho that I'm not the only one who thinks the romantisisation of toxic relationships is crazy 😭😭 I remember a few years ago when I was 16 this like 30 Yr old got in an argument with me when I said they shouldn't romanticise sex trafficking and they kept coming at me and I had to block them as they wouldn't stop it was crazyyy 😭😭 it was funny tho because at the same time they were arguing with someone else who was defending me and then the person defending me ended up giving me a book recommendation and we had a nice chat about art and books in the 30 year olds comment section 💀

Tbh at this point I sometimes wonder if it can be compared to cornography addictions-same dopamine hits just different mediums. Obviously they’re different but the obsession with smut and “spice” is getting to those levels.

I think porn and smut books are the same in terms of their negative effects if not read or watched in moderation 🙃 the only advantage of smut over porn is there's no chance of s*x trafficking in written smut but other than that in terms of smut/porn addictions I'm pretty sure they are the same 🤔

I cannot read dark romance/mafia romances. Read a fair share of then on Wattpad because I'm masochistic like that apparently, and now every time I see a super popular mafia romance, I read literally the first paragraph and roll my eyes so hard, my head starts to hurt. I remember the last time I visited the bookstore, I had no intention of buying any novels and said I'd just browse (mistake on my part). While browsing, I checked out a few romances published by Mills&Boone and I swear...I crack up every time I read those titles. It's like reading the titles of those really bad dark romances on Wattpad. I couldn't stop rolling my eyes. It was so bad!

Give her two books with practically the same story but with a different murder weapon and a victim name and she'd love them both just as much haha

Dark romance books are so bad on wattpad. They are all generic and consist of the same thing, every.single.darn.time. The authors put no thought into the books except for the smutty, aka most corny, parts. They aren’t good whatsoever. Especially the mafia ones. My gosh that’s an entirely different Ted talk.

booktok is actually insane. like i’ve taken recommendations from videos out of curiosity and they’re always really bad. i don’t understand the need for there to be soooo much smut in books? i get that everyone has their own preferences but there’s so many posts about books that contain smut and since they’re typically the most popular, everyone runs to those books, they become the main thing to look for and it hides the very few videos people recommend that aren’t dark romance/super smutty. apart from the smut, the problem is that i can barely find a good romance novel now. all i see is colleen hoover, red flag plots, or rich mean ceo who has a soft spot for the main character 😭 and don’t even get me started on goodreads they’re pretty much filled with reviews from booktok readers who enjoyed the book and thus, the book has a high rating. give me a good romance, the kind where they hold hands in like chapter 15 after they’ve finally confessed their love and are in the honeymoon phase, yk the giddy feels you associate with romance! not alpha x omega dominance :/ anyways, since you can’t find romance on romance booktok, yt has become my bestie for that so if you have the same problem too with tiktok, i recommend you do that too

Honestly, there's nothing wrong with a smut book every once in a while, it's a perfectly human urge afterall.
I can't wrap my head around people that read NOTHING BUT spicy romance novels. There are people on Goodreads that have 200+ under the belt per year, every single one a romance.
Don't they ever get bored of it? I need a long break if I read two back to back.
At that point, you're not a reader, you have a p*rn addiction.

to be fair though, we need to differentiate between romances and romances *with* spice, I'm a romance enthusiast but stay clear of spice althogether because I'm asexual. Additionally, sometimes books tagged as romance on goodreads have it as 2nd genre or subplot (that's not to say people don't hyperfocus on the romance though)
