You are banging on about everything in this video except for the hippie movement of the 60s. You should go deeper on that one, son. The history we are taught about the movement is romanticized propaganda via media and educational institutions. The hippie movement was small but force-fed to the public in order to manipulate the social-mind of a nation. Peace, love, sexual liberation, female equality, etc. was all to shape the culture politically and economically.
Exactly as corporate powers intended - remove the parts of the countercultures that are actually a threat to those in control, and sell us back the cool aesthetics
Thrift stores are a thing. Finding your own talent to weave and wrap and paint is a thing. We gotta choose our battles anyways/ hard to avoid Walmart. You can’t discount the whole hippie movement over random individual hypocrites/ and you shouldn’t. I 100% guarantee you that we FEEL better than most ppl, even when we are poor: we are far healthier, and many of us are Not aging.
In France, we have the word « bobo » which directly translates to « bohemian bourgeois » and I feel like those fake hippies are the American equivalent
I think that term “bohemian” originated from “bohème” which was what the French referred to the Romani people as. And the Bohemian aesthetic was taken from or inspired by Romani aesthetics and lifestyle (but without the discrimination that Romani people face). They fantasize about the free, nomadic life of the Romani people, but they were also prejudiced against them. Edit: I remember learning about this from a Romani UA-camr!
@@emmacouffon2450 No you’re right! It’s absolutely a good comparison cause a lot of hippie fashion is taken from either Native American, Indian, or Romani culture. Edit: And I think Jamaican culture as well?
I’m a Goth/metalhead (as in, listen to the music.) and the amount of times I’ve been called a gatekeeper just for pointing out that to be a Goth, you have to listen to the music. Because it’s a music subculture. I couldn’t give a rats ass if people want to dress in these “aesthetics” it just really bugs me when they forget that there’s a reason it all existed.
I completely agree! I like the aesthetic and have some „goth” pieces in my wardrobe but I do not call myself goth because I wear a „goth” dress once in a year 😂 I had a period in my life when I was dressing emo/scene and also I listened to this type of music but it’s in the past 😃
THIS!!! Yes!!! Anytime I hear that f-ing word "aesthetic", it makes me want to scream. When I was young, you rarely heard it and now I'm in my 40s and it's EVERYWHERE
@@ghoultooth dude honestly I'm more about gate keeping. The whole subculture feels lost. But when a younger person comes up and asks for a smoke dressed in the aesthetic. But they don't know who siousxie is while wearing siousxie eyes. And we talk to them about the music and they don't know. And they start to take an interest in it and stay and listen instead of run off. Kinda gives me hope. Not a lot
It's the 'I don't shower' part of the hippie culture but without the 'because I'm too busy trying to fix a broken society, restore human rights to minorities, and end a war which only funds the capitalist 1%' part. That's the most important part, Sarah, THE MOST IMPORTANT PART.

As someone raised Christian right wing and become a hippie, I don’t steal from any body. Anybody ratracing, anybody Not a hippie, isn’t really living.
If you really want to be a hippie in today’s society, start going out there and find a cause. Stand up for workers rights from toxic work environments. Volunteer at an animal shelter. Do something that gives back to the community.
not saying people aren’t doing that but people are already doing things like that but doing it in the wrong way which results into violence and people hurting eachother and then people chucking soup on paintings… like I thought being a hippie and wanting peace was all about standing up for like your human rights and politics and war and basically saying “we want peace” but I don’t see that anymore I just see pure hatred even though both sides are about “peace” but then create violence it’s so fkd up
@InfiniteCookie3-jo2bb I agree. However, those are not hippies they're usually anarchists or other groups demanding change. In certain situations as well tho, the "peaceful protests" turn violent by police themselves. In those situations we can only answer back with violence to protect ourselves and our people. Now for protests, demonstrations etc. that become violent because of the protesters it really depends on the situation. But calling those people (i would even put myself in them) hippies is completely incorrect

have you ever been in the metal scene? i was for 16 years and i came across some of the worst people imaginable. same with hippies the circles have some overlap. but the random hippy dudes i would meet were genuinely nicer. the women were usually self righteous and terrible.
Honestly, I've met some very nice hippies. My cousin was one of them. She and her band, traveled all over America in a school bus, performing their music. I think people are just people and nice people come in all kinds of different packages. Two of the most respectful people I've ever met were an enforcer for the Hell's Angels and the other was a leader for some kind of gang that controlled the drug trade in the area I lived in at the time. Both were friends with my (now) ex but wouldn't come in the house or sit down, until they had gotten my permission.

Little rant- Hippie is about the politics, anti capitalist, anti war. It’s not about the style it’s about your world beliefs. You’re not a hippie for smoking or dressing. It’s basically free will. That being said shopping from fast fashion isn’t hippie. White sage too, as a native person. It is cultural. Thanks for coming to my ted talk
This cannot be more accurate. This is exactly the problem with modern-era "punk" being filled to the brim with the worst kinds of people ever. Brendon Urie is the perfect example of what *isn't* punk. Green Day, on the other hand, represents punk. So does Muse. Any time pop culture grips onto something "edgy" and "not conventional" by whatever standards we live in, they butcher the meaning of what those movements were about in the first place. Nobody is a hippie for dressing in boho chic clothing and smoking weed. Nobody is a hippie for using cultures as a cute little "trend" (aka appropriation). Nobody is a hippie for shopping at SHEIN, Temu, Wish, and Amazon. It's the same way nobody is punk for ripping a hole in their pants and slapping a guitar. Punk is about being anti-Republican, period. Anyway, thank you for also mentioning the bit about white sage. I've never used it, but I also never knew it was a cultural thing. I'll be sure to mention that to any white kids who use it for their "sanctuary" lol.

I'd like to add that a lot of them take what they want from Rastafarianism, which is a belief system/religion, and simplifying it to just locs and regae and weed
As an African-American(and I’m not speaking for everyone) my problem isn’t people wearing dreads, it’s people wearing them without the proper understanding of WHY we wear those hairstyles. A lot of black hairstyles are meant to protect the hair, since it's dry, brittle, and doesn't do too well in extreme temperatures, we wear those hairstyles to protect the hair.(Of course, there's also the slavery aspect of why hairstyles like cornrows exist but I'm not going to touch on that.) And then there's the main issue of people wearing dreads and other non-white hairstyles because its 'so spiritual and non-american/european' i guess. honestly, I'm not sure how to explain my thoughts but overall, i wished people like these 'hippies' would stop using dreads like this. it just gives off the vibe that you're wearing them because its exotic more than anything else to me. anyways thanks for listening to me ramble for like two minutes.
I’m black too. I don’t think I’m mad at people for wearing locs but I find it very cringey to when they do. If a white person is invested in Rastafarian culture, for example, and respect the people within that culture, wearing the attire and the hairstyles could be okay, but in most cases its just white people trying to find an identity by wearing clothing that has no real value for them. Also, I play Love&Deepspace too and Zayne is also my favorite lol

Here's the twist though: 60s hippies were EXACTLY like today's hippies. The reasons we forgot about that is that 1. there was no Internet back then for them to ridicule themselves, and 2. they're now the people who run newspapers, TV stations, etc. and they glorify their own youth. Expect something similar to happen when the 2010s hipsters will be in charge.

Boho chic also steals from Romani culture. Since the term “Bohemian” comes from the French term “Bohème”, which was what they referred to Romani people as. The “bohemians” were non-Romani people that liked the free, nomadic lifestyle and aesthetics of the Romani people but were also actively discriminating against them at the same time. The way Romani people were treated (and are still treated) in Europe is horrible.
@@parkchimmin7913 The Bohemians were not non-Romani people that liked the free nomadic lifestyle. Bohemians are an actual people who live in Bohemia. It was a rugged place, so most Bohemians were capable people who knew how to live rough. Self reliant, like. So when people in Europe had a carefree life style, somewhat poor, given to music, people referred to them as Bohemians, meaning they didn't need anybody. The reason Bohemia and Romani are thought of together so often, is because Bohemia was the first country to outlaw slavery, which Romani people REALLY suffered from some terrible laws making them slaves in some countries just for existing. So, a lot of Romani went to live in Bohemia. A lot of Bohemians are part Romani. My son is Bohemian, and his grand dad's family came to the US as indentured laborers to work in construction, it was just said a "miscellaneous group of Bohemians and Gypsies" on his paperwork, so nobody is really sure which. But I think the attitude is somewhat genetic, because everyone in that family can do literally anything in life, they're all musicians, and you aint gonna beat any of them in a business deal.
im realizing that nowadays, being a youth myself, new youths are abandoning the "culture" in subculture and just keep the aesthetics, which is such a bummer that people are becoming this shallow that people adapt subcultures for glamour without respecting the politics and morals attached to them 😕 this, (in my opinion) in turn, shows these people have no self-respect to even care about having their OWN ideologies! this is especially the case for alternative subcultures such as punks, hippies, goths- especially in the country i live in, i've been part of the local alt community long enough to see how the "goth"/"alt" people absolutely have no values or are even directly doing things AGAINST the alternative mind!!! i see so many of them doing shein hauls or being so consumerist, like that ISNT WHAT BEING ALT IS ABOUT! to be alternative isn't just about having alternative outfits from the average person, but it's about having ALTERNATIVE VALUES that go against the harmful hive mind that many others have
(BOLIVIA MENTIONED RAHHH) but yeah it certainly doesn't help that shanin's song lyrics are leaning those racist conspiracies that say "aliens have to had built these things bc there's no way these uncivilized ppl could do it" and further reducing the image of the Altiplano to just drugs, instead of trying to fight racial discrimination she's just picking and choosing elements of unrelated cultures and homogenizing them for lyrics that aren't good
But these cultures many around the world are based that they had contact with extraterestials, and that they have been higly spiritual people. Like many antient culture. Slavic people also have their stories about extraterestial myths. Its not racist conspiratory theory. I And to take it like this well I think it is personal opinion. Like I dont even care what this chick is wearing, saying she can throw 6 cultures at herself and I wont even bother. Cultures are constantly changing because we as people constanly changing, evolving. Some cultures die up some are created. If someone want to immerse hisself in a different culture because he find it intresting than go ahead. I wont gatekeep any cultures for anybody because I have no right to. Its like saying if someone is black they cant wear kimono... its stupid. In Japan we love to share our culture with others, if you want to wear kimono go for it. And in America I think this whole cultural approprearion was created so people would fight with each other more. So people would not enjoy other cultures but stayed at their own lain, scared. Its so stupid to the people outside you know? If you are black, blue, yellow, red or alien please enjoy kimono, enjoy whatever culture you like.

It's like saying that I, as a rich person, want to immerse myself in the struggles of the working class so I'm going to eat McDonalds once a day for a month. Saying it's like wearing a kimono is removing the context because every culture has things they don't mind sharing. I'm sure Japan has specific cultural items that aren't meant for tourists to just use freely, that hold value to them. People aren't getting pushback for wearing the things other culture's are happy to wear, they are getting push back for the things that they are taking that aren't meant for cosplay or fun and then reducing to "well I wore a kimono so I'm Japanese now and understand the Japanese struggles" without actually bothering to learn anything about Japan or it's people (kimono being just an example here).

Because if only people of other races start to takee thing from other races even as beautifull as clothes you are like stop it, its racist. Sorry but from outsiders its just stupid and silly, and a prove how closed minded on purpose you are. We hate each other because a propaganda we will to accept. The propaganda mostly comes from the top, the rulling class, the rulling class controles the media that keep spreading propaganda. We should just focus on buiding better word togheter focusing on important things. And if someone choose to wear specific make up, outfit and so on is like the less important thing to hate on. @reverse_Simp is def right the 60s and 70s hippies heavily romanticized Romanian and indigenous cultures ect and appropriated alot of them(the meaning of which from wiki: Cultural appropriation is the inappropriate or unacknowledged adoption of an element or elements of one culture or identity by members of another culture or identity)
to quote our lord and savior guy fieri from smash mouth: "then some were spellbound, some were hell-bound, some they fell down, and some got back up and fought back against the meltdown, and their kids were hippie chicks, all hypocrites because fashion is smashing the true meaning of it" it's almost always the entitled-class, politically apathetic ppl who did the hippie culture dirty
True. But they were rebelling because they legitimately disagreed with their parents and the lifestyle they represented. They would rather live in a small flat in the Haight with 20 other kids and sell homemade jewelry and bags on a street corner than continue to be a part of what they saw as the problem. It's just an aesthetic for these kids.
Basically. Alot of them were draft dodgers. Why do you think they lived in vans always moving around. No home address. Alot of them were just spoiled lazy a holes. That just didn't want to work for a living.

I was a part of the hippie sub scene for years actually. And with that I mean, struggling students, thrifted harem pants, psychedelics, majority vegan, eco conscious living, polyamorous, festival seeking nature geeks. Although I learned a lot from it and still live pretty true to many of it's fundamental thoughts, my biggest concern with the "true" hippie movement is the blatant misogyny it's vulnerable too. I've experienced first hand how a movement proclaiming "free love" in the name of offering women a place to sexually discover themselves is an open door for sexual predators. So you end up seeing a lot of olders men with younger women, and a lot of sexual exploitation where boundaries are crossed or worse mostly in combination with drugs, a lot of gaslighting afterwards, silence, shame. It's such a shame, because as much as I love the message of free love and the ability for women to express themselves, it's not a safe place for women because of the man taking advantage of women trying to sexually liberate themselves.

My mom was, I mean IS, an OG “hippie”. I put hippie in parentheses because they actually referred to themselves as freaks. One thing she’s mentioned that most ppl don’t realize is how dangerous it was to be a freak in the 60s. They were targeted by everyone, especially all authority in the conformist society of that time. It was a real risk to express yourself in any non traditional way, even more so to fight the injustices of the era. And that’s not even including how much more horrible minorities were treated. There’s still so much discrimination & important issues, but there’s a lot of freedoms we have that are there because ppl of the freak scene (& so many other groups throughout history) fought for them. These tik tok hippies don’t seem to appreciate that & are more concerned about aesthetics than actually participating in anything to attain peace, love, & understanding.
a big part of white hippie culture was always appropriating other cultures so its not that surprising sadly, but still disappointing (forgot to preface this but not the political movement, more so the 'aesthetics' of it)
They're not hippies, they're spoiled rich kids appropriating the aesthetics of 1960s counterculture, and barely even getting the aesthetics right most of the time.
Yeah exactly! Real hippies take action. It's cool and all to not consume things that are really harmful to others and especially where the harm can't be avoided, but not if you are, for example, a rich person who only crowns themselves with driving a electric car but has a giant house. Those people act like they care about something, but in reality just do what is easy for them and coicadentally also good for others in a way, but they don't actually care (well, often times). Not everybody has time to take action in something and that is fine! You can still avoid doing harmful things and just maybe not take too much for yourself if not needed (like a giant mansion for yourself...). But if you really care and have strengt and time it is great to take action in something.
An old friend of mine became a sort of hippie influencer, before people were really using the word "influencer" in that context. Made a bunch of money selling some sort of osteopath "remedy" made out of "desert minerals". Last I heard, her entire family got deathly ill from drinking raw milk.

They have done to hippie what has been done to punk, it's become commodified, capitalized, and sanitized.

I think that term “bohemian” originated from “bohème” which was what the French referred to the Romani people as. And the Bohemian aesthetic was taken from or inspired by Romani aesthetics and lifestyle (but without the discrimination that Romani people face). YES THIS
This cannot be more accurate.
And then there's the main issue of people wearing dreads and other non-white hairstyles because its 'so spiritual and non-american/european' i guess. honestly, I'm not sure how to explain my thoughts but overall, i wished people like these 'hippies' would stop using dreads like this. it just gives off the vibe that you're wearing them because its exotic more than anything else to me.
anyways thanks for listening to me ramble for like two minutes.
Africans were not the only ones who wore dreadlocks, ancient Germanic tribes as well as Scandinavian Vikings wore their hair in dreads and braids. It’s actually very common among tribal societies regardless of ethnicity.
@@spraycheese743 Box braids and Viking braids are not the same 💀 And hippies who wear/wore braids were not trying to emulate Vikings that colonized, pillaged, and killed people lol.
I think anybody with curly hair, black or not should be allowed to wear hairstyles meant for this type of hair, like the aforementioned dreads

My dad grew up in the 60's. He could have gone into the Vietnam War because he had a draft. He told me how he remembers the kids in the streets marching not to go to war and for peace when police opened fire on them. His dad said those kids needed to be put in place as my dad agrees with the kids his age. He was more of the wild child of the family. Source: deez
The way Romani people were treated (and are still treated) in Europe is horrible.
and that is ok, i don't get what is so wrong with wanting to find an aestetic as a teenager
Is deez related to nutz?
@@parkchimmin7913 the way the Rom@ni act is atrocious!

There were a time that turkish empire were killing white people. Like millions. Now in Africa black people are fighting with each other, like there is bloodbath. Iran and Irak the same race. So we are clearly as humanity cannot live in peace. Which is sad. We have bigger problems than someone wanting to just wear braids, kimono or do a make up in certain way. And how we suppose to measure if he respects the culture enough? If knowing the history is enough? How much history 100 years, 1000 years? Where is the line? Where is this invisible line that will make a person legit for wearing something. Its just your personal opinion and judgment. Well if you feel better critisazing people for not even your problem is fake noble. You dont do it for yourself, you do it for fake feeling of doing something good. I am sorry but in the US, which is super young country, you just closed yourself in the bubble of self hatred. You could be beautifull country rich of every imigrant culture there is. But insted you constanty fighting with each other over silly things. You are a proof that integration simply cannot happen. Because if only people of other races start to takee thing from other races even as beautifull as clothes you are like stop it, its racist. Sorry but from outsiders its just stupid and silly, and a prove how closed minded on purpose you are. What we need to understand that the wars are possible only because we are willing to hate each other to the point that we are willing to kill each other. Someone can be a normal, good, random person, just like you and me, which only wants to live his life and just want to wear braids as a hairstyle because he just find it cute and you will just keep critisizing them, putting this whole projection on him, like he was responsible for genoside or bad stuff himself. Its just crazy and delulu. Is fake noble. No wonder that we are being even more deppresed as humanity when we fight over such a small things. Well wish you a good day and I give you a pass to wear kimono withouth guilt and with my ancestors approval and even as a cosplay. To wear what we like, to listen what we like is the last freedom we have on this Earth. And yes these chicks are irritating but I also have freedom to not care about them 😁

"Never trust a Hippie"!
