STORY:
An 83 day, 1700 kilometre canoe expedition across the seldom explored Labrador wild. Presented as a docuseries. This is episode #1 of the ASMR short version. There are 6 episodes.
At 1.4 million km², the Labrador Peninsula is one of the last great wilderness areas on the planet. In 2018 I set a goal to cross its width by canoe.
From the Labrador Sea to Hudson Bay it was an estimated 1700 kilometre journey that would last 83 days.
With only my dog Saku, I would travel, up and down remote rivers, across enormous lakes, and over portages that were littered with both beauty and danger.
We would witness and camp in wilderness that few, if any, have ever seen and rewind back to a time when life was simpler.
Along the way, I filmed our experiences. Now, in a docuseries format, we bring it to life for you, right here on UA-cam.

Justin Barbour is one of the most prominent youtubers researchers of nature, he goes to the limits of human endurance, bravo.
That was wonderful. Without commentary one gets to hear what you hear and to sense how truly alone you are in that vast wilderness. Great job. Thank you.
You’re the best Justin
Appreciate you tuning in Annette, have a great day.
Got quarantined for a second time since the beginning of all this craziness due to my wrk , this is the only thing keeping me going
Come on people, Justin is just a tag along. We all know Saku is the real explorer. ;)
Great video, as always. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for showing some of the “ugly” realities of a trip. Most times that’s edited out, but that is what goes on out there👍
It’s interesting to see the video footage without commentary and you talking to the camera. It makes the viewer realize how really alone you are (not counting Saku of course). Somehow when you’re talking into the camera, it seems like we’re there with you. I like both formats.
Not many people can keep their spirits and drive up through all of this, that's what makes you an inspiration to follow. Stay true and safe.
They should have this playing on repeat in tourist centres. Beautiful stuff.
I've always loved your adventures and I'm also a fan of ASMR. This is such a wonderful blending of the two. Great job!
Some truly artistic moments here. I watched the long version and loved it. This has peace, excitement, and gripping moments as well, but is more like reading a book -- much more left to the viewer to imagine. I absolutely loved this! Thank you!
thank you! Happy to hear, Have a great day : )
Another beauty. Sometimes less is more. Like it how ever you do it. Love the Saku leaping at waters edge scenes.
As a Justin Barbour fan and an ASMR fan, this crossover couldn't be more welcome :) LOVE the video! Looking forward to more of them!
I enjoyed watching the full series. The good, the bad and the ugly. This is an interesting summary.
Enjoyed the Series brother. Can't wait for the next adventure. Congrats on a successful trip
Thank you for all these great adventures. It would be cool to have before and after shots of specific equipment that goes thru the wear and tear during these great adventures. Just watching this first episode and knowing the outcome for this trip I see a lovely shiny canoe , knowing it will take some beating I would have loved to sea the before and after of your canoe. Not to even mention all equipment that just breaks up on you. Justin you are a huge inspiration for me to ga back in our woods and just enjoy these moments (microadventures). Thanks for all 🙏🏻
Thanks Justin Great video...I am a Newfundlander too...,Bay Boy❤
Your channel is and was a blessing during this Plandemic.
Thanks Moose Knuckle!!
@@JustinBarbournlexplorer No worries fella, my pleasure.
Stay safe.
Now here is a man who puts it in his pipe and smokes it. Bravo. TY for sharing.
It was very different without your voice but I did enjoy it. I do hope that whatever adventure you are on now goes well for both you and Saku.
I love watching the Saku show with special guest, Justin Barbour..
Saku is boss!!!!
I recommend you and saku to be the next winners of Alone .! You inspire me brother . Be safe
Some great stuff going on here Justin and thanks for letting us hear the other side as well.......take care bud!
Hi Justin, we love your adventures and videos. Thanks for adding this content.
ditto that, Justin, bud, you are the best. just amazing. thanks so much
Just as enjoyable on take 2 👍🇺🇸
Thank you! We follow every step you and Saku take, every paddle stroke. So fascinating and so well edited. Soon we'll paddle up (and down) a river in the Swedish wilderness. Three small dogs who loves sniffing what is hiding on the river banks. Thanks again for the inspiration.
Really Enjoyed This Justin, i saw the long verison as well, your a great story teller, keep up the great work, love your videos.
Beautiful filmmaking! Thank you!
nice to see that your channel is growing....at least your work deserves 5 mill.subscriber👍
The Adventures of Saku with special appearance by Justin Barbour! :-) Cheers, Steve
Thanks much for the vid Justin. Enjoyed the downtime vid - anyone who spends time outside would most likely enjoy both types of editing. I was going to mention to you in your earlier vids that bill mason used a great technique for pulling a canoe parallel along shore. It’s in either path of the paddle or song of the paddle and he uses a rope harness system that is tied under the bow of the canoe and works really well. I assume you have seen it but wanted to mention it in case you hadn’t. All the best!
Was an excellent series, looking forward to the next one. What’s next on the horizon for you?
thanks Richard, big trip this summer, more details coming soon!
I remember the long version , this was awesome as well you have the endurance to get you through wonderful video
Pretty neat idea to post this type of video. The sound of nature is the best.
great as usual.thanks justin and saku.stay safe
Wow, I really like both formats, I think you should keep doing an ASMR version if it's not too much work. Good luck on your upcoming voyage Justin!
Great editing! Enjoyed this version of your trip too👍🏻👌
It's great to try something different. When you are outdoors there is so much not going on in your head you can really concentrate on everything going on around you in nature. Great audio 👌
This is amazing Justin!!!
What a great idea! I follow everything you do, but this was cool too! The landslide was pretty cool!Saku started barking and made it "stay there!" Lol!
Either way your videos are phenomenal......you should consider a bloopers episode....after 83 days I bet you got some funny mishaps....
Hey justin. Paddling that canoe looks like a good upper body workout 👍🏻🙂
I appreciate these videos
Awesome Justin!
We love watching your videos keep it up and be safe out there tc
Two thumbs up!
Great idea 😀
Almost as good as the Revenant movie. Loved the deluge.
Great adage.
...and away we go..lol..,good one..keep safe..
Love this version!! Forces me to really watch it! Love all the sounds 👍
Yeah! Looking forward to this. Thx for all the hard work putting the vid out.
Thank for tuning in Valorie : ) Have a great day
I’m pretty excited for what’s ahead 👍 nice revisit!
Great video .
10:55 i remember this event. u had to get off of that lake and there were no ideal places to pitch a camp and the rain and wind. u pitched in the shrubs
Awesome adventure
Loved it
I like this version. Less talk, more rock!
Epic. Followed the whole series. Thanks so much. It changed everything for me. Truly. Loving the wordless video. Superb idea. A biscuit for Saku and Happy Summer Solstice Eclipse to you. Yis b'y!
Justin, look at you all crisp and clean! Should have done a Before and After photo showing your wear and tear.
Great stuff! Scenery is inspiring. Man this makes me wish I were young again but as they say, it is what it is or was.
No words needed to enjoy the spectacular beauty of our universe 💞
You are a trooper
New stuff!!! 👌
Very nice! :D
absolutely stunning & canada didnt look to bad either 🤣🤣🤣♥️💯
Thanks Trixie! : )
Well I think if ya went there to find rain ya sure struck it rich. great vid!
Wow, I'm definitely diggin this. Do more like this! I give you three thumbs up for this one ... oh wait ... I only have two thumbs. :P
For a future trip, you should do a separate video with footage ONLY from a GoPro that you mount on the back of Saku. You could just leave it run for the majority of the time. It could be called "Saku-vision". lol
83 days in 22 minutes. now THAT`S a superhero.lol
What is your opinion on the SWIFT Pack Boat, instead of a Canoe?
I didn't know UA-cam had an option where you could turn off "Newfie Slang"...Haha, good stuff as always buddy...
lol
So Much
SONK! JB is a hero.
....trusty Side Kick, SAKU
Appreciate it Bill!
First of all, these videos that you make are awesome! I hope you continue the journey next summer to finish your quest.
Second of all, I would like to know how you were able to charge your camera consistently throughout your journey. I'm renting a cottage this summer and wondering how I could charge my devices.
Give Saku a pet for me!
Solar panel and power bank. Thanks for watching!
An enjoyable re-edit. I just noticed that you had the paddle drip rings pushed to the center. Any reason?
Thanks, George. No reason. That may have just happened unknowingly while roughing the paddle around when using it as a post for a tarp setup. And I never noticed to put them back near the blade. Bit of water dripping here and there don't bother me it's refreshing in the summer.
I've been watching you for years Justin! I tell all my friends of your solo trips! You are the man!
Do you have any tips for a 1st time solo backcountry trip? Also what length of double blade paddle do you use in your canoe?
Cheers
230 cm blade and 1st trip start small, be patient and look after yourself. Thanks for watching Jordan
Average temp and rain fall June - August in that area ? Been there done it never again. Go west man go west. Leave the buggy wet n cold for the buggy dry n hot
The bugs and harsh weather keep people away. That's the way I like
Beautiful country. Glad you had the opportunity to experience it but - geesh - were you trying to outdo Noah in the rain department?
lol thanks for watching
Question for you. What gets you on edge the most ,thunder or bear???For me ,THUNDER!!! Enjoying both hardship and fun on this trip!!!
Thunder and big lighting for sure. Wading up to your chest in a flooded rushing river with muddy ground falling from beneath you is a good rush too. Thanks for watching
I was reading that some European countries (I don't recall which ones) had been using the airspace over Labrador to test their planes at low altitude, prompting noise complaints from the natives. Are you aware if they are still doing this?
You are right and I believe they still are though I heard none. Thanks for watching
2:30 This is gonna be my desktop image for a while...
All we need is the Japanese. This is just like Anne
Justin,I'm sure you've been asked before but in summer,do you take firearms with you for bear etc?
P.s. it's amazing to me how one guy can be out for so many days and keep fed watered not to mention keep electrics powered up 🤦♂️🙏
:)
Justin. Are you using a MSR HUBBA BUBBA TENT ? WOW What a thunderstorm. Some big boomers.
Hubba hubba 👍
@@JustinBarbournlexplorer great tent 👍🏻
There needs to be speaking to keep it engaging.
I hear you Aaron. Thanks for your response. It will be back to speaking for all future adventures. These upcoming videos will be more of an experiment while I am away to keep some content on the channel and to bring in some more subs. It will give viewers a peaceful experience. Maybe put the headphones in and enjoy it while sleeping! Best wishes
Looks like you had a run in with Bigfoot at 12:53
Nah that was an eroding riverbank. If anything it was the spirits of the wild. Big Foot is fake.
Hmmmmmm so ur starting asmr now sick 😄
Much different perspective without the music and narration.
We all need a change-up now and then. Regular narrating programming will return for the next big series late summer. Thanks for watching!
Hey man - You mentioned in your latest Q&A that you'll be gone for about 5 weeks in July/Aug 2020. You also mentioned just before that - that you're willing/looking for someone with the right mindset to accompany you on an expedition. (Oddly enough I was wondering that just recently) If you reach out, We can arrange something where either you come to this area (Ottawa Valley) or I could come out your way, or we could find something new anywhere else in Canada. I'm down.
Takes a little while to plan and organize, so no rush. If you reply to this comment (i'll check my email inbox for one for a few weeks) I'll reply with some contact info you can reach me at (and then I'll delete once you've contacted). Cheers man! - Mike
Appreciate your interest Mike but I am staying solo for the time being. All the best on your adventures!
No worries. My 5 month old pup 'Saku' would probably cause people to think I copied you which is ridiculous!
Too many tools, too many mistakes.
haha for sure. You should try it someday it's that easy
