I seem to remember someone on Time Team saying that holed pots were ones that had been used as offerings, either to assorted gods or in graves, and they were holed to keep people from taking them to use, or something along that line.
I had a great time, it's not only a history video with this wild bunch, but a comedy act also. LOL Learn a little, and laugh a little, can't beat that. Thanks Si, and the team.
Your bottle brush is actually a sink drain clog cleaner. You put the brush part down a drain and it will grab hair clogs so you can un clog your drains.
Thanks Si and friends. Bury Steve's hair out on the low tide mud flats and when someone digs it up they will think it's from the viking invasions.😉 better tie it up and tie a date tag into it.😁 You restored that bottle beautifully!
Interesting that you find Roman pottery with holes in the bottom. Here in the American southwest, a lot of ancient Native American pottery also have what are called 'kill holes' punctured in the bottoms. It is thought they did so for funerary use (placing over the head of the deceased) and that the hole allowed the soul to pass through.
What an epic day. The Roman pots always get me. Hard to believe you can pick up a piece that is over 800 years old!!! Although the man bun is gone, Steve still looks dashing either way 😊

I was watching Oak Island with my father and said they should hire you and your friends 😂 you find more in a day then they do in 8 seasons 🤣 another great video ❤️ you should do a Q&A ✌🏼🤙🏼👊🏼
Steve, that hole was punched out with a ball peen hammer or equivalent. That is why the hole is bigger inside where it and chips of material are blown out like the backside of a bullet impact. The other evidence is the clear 120 degree angles and the hexagon shape. It was perfectly punched out probably to use it for a plant when it wasn’t designed with drainage in mind.

Got excited when you mentioned the curse of oak island I love that show and I can’t wait for them to find the treasure. I’ve been obsessed with stories of oak island since I was little.
The bendy bottle brush thing looks like a brush used for commercial coffee pots used at cafes and restaurants. Here in the states a common company is Bunn that makes these coffee pots. The machines hold water . Each time you make a pot of coffee you add a measure of water and it runs through the machine. Every night your supposed to run the bendy brush thing up through the coffee machine to help keep it clear of hard water build up.

Lovely find, that Gibson bottle. All that knowledge your friend has. Loved the history on that heater brick. Awesome repair on that Harris’s bottle, Si. Interesting point Steve made about those holes in bases of the pottery.
That pottery explained the roman site. Salt was military pay, and production would have been controlled. They could have a fort nearby somewhere and that site likely had a high status villa as salt was valuable.

Hi Simon, that flexible cleaning brush is also used to clean the little drainhole in the back of a fridge. Maybe that will help to find one. And tell Steve that hair always grows back 😉
In some cultures, the personal dishes, pots, and cups of a person would be "Struck" a hole or broken. In America, the indigenous people broke mortars, and pots then burned it in a pile. I'm guessing it's some form of that sort of death ritual.

@Irate Puffin 🔸️THANK YOU🔸️ for mentioning this! Not 20 seconds ago I was discussing this with my husband - retired from the camera business. (And the fact that the selfie stick throws a shadow).
