I seem to remember someone on Time Team saying that holed pots were ones that had been used as offerings, either to assorted gods or in graves, and they were holed to keep people from taking them to use, or something along that line.
I had a great time, it's not only a history video with this wild bunch, but a comedy act also. LOL Learn a little, and laugh a little, can't beat that. Thanks Si, and the team.
Your bottle brush is actually a sink drain clog cleaner. You put the brush part down a drain and it will grab hair clogs so you can un clog your drains.
Interesting that you find Roman pottery with holes in the bottom. Here in the American southwest, a lot of ancient Native American pottery also have what are called 'kill holes' punctured in the bottoms. It is thought they did so for funerary use (placing over the head of the deceased) and that the hole allowed the soul to pass through.
Thanks Si and friends. Bury Steve's hair out on the low tide mud flats and when someone digs it up they will think it's from the viking invasions.😉 better tie it up and tie a date tag into it.😁 You restored that bottle beautifully!

Wow!! So much Roman pottery. Would love to find some myself. The Chatham bottle was lovely, looks like sea glass but complete. Get back to that boat lol! It’s your “Life boat” 😂👍 Happy Hunting
Steve, that hole was punched out with a ball peen hammer or equivalent. That is why the hole is bigger inside where it and chips of material are blown out like the backside of a bullet impact. The other evidence is the clear 120 degree angles and the hexagon shape. It was perfectly punched out probably to use it for a plant when it wasn’t designed with drainage in mind.
Si I received that lovely cut Cross bottle and really love it thanks buddy! I posted a nice picture of it on a light table on my Facebook page. Cheers!!

@Irate Puffin 🔸️THANK YOU🔸️ for mentioning this! Not 20 seconds ago I was discussing this with my husband - retired from the camera business. (And the fact that the selfie stick throws a shadow). We go through this weekly because the invisible selfie stick obsesses me. My husband provides such helpful explanations as "I don't know. Maybe he edits it out." 🤡 "Must be the angle of the stick or something" 🤯 Yeah, thanks Mike. These explanations are very satisfying, and I won't discuss it any more. 😑

The bendy bottle brush thing looks like a brush used for commercial coffee pots used at cafes and restaurants. Here in the states a common company is Bunn that makes these coffee pots. The machines hold water . Each time you make a pot of coffee you add a measure of water and it runs through the machine. Every night your supposed to run the bendy brush thing up through the coffee machine to help keep it clear of hard water build up.
Re : the bendy bottle brush Try your local landlord in your pub , I was a landlord at one time and I was gifted a load of these kind of brushes by the firm that supposedly looked after the cellar and gases , all sorts of sizes and uses that I never found out what they were intended for. They were the sort of thing that went untouched and unloved for years but like most things I wish I had taken them with me now
Got excited when you mentioned the curse of oak island I love that show and I can’t wait for them to find the treasure. I’ve been obsessed with stories of oak island since I was little.
In some cultures, the personal dishes, pots, and cups of a person would be "Struck" a hole or broken. In America, the indigenous people broke mortars, and pots then burned it in a pile. I'm guessing it's some form of that sort of death ritual.

That pottery explained the roman site. Salt was military pay, and production would have been controlled. They could have a fort nearby somewhere and that site likely had a high status villa as salt was valuable.
You guys have so much fun. A potter would be able to tell if the pot had a thin base during the throwing process. In my experience a thin base produces crack as it dries not a hole. The extra chipping around the inside edges of the hole show it was hit from the outside. Maybe sealed produce inside a single use pot that needed the hole to pour or empty properly? Just guessing. Jealous of the Bug, would love one.
Might be a bit late with this one…your “bendy bottle brush” is actually used for removing hair clogs from sink and tub drains. The “Velcro-ish” hook end grabs the offending hair bundle and drags it out. Google Velcro drain cleaner. Cheers. ;)
