    I think in wartime we start to trust our enemies is because you know they are going through the same thing as you, separated from your family, superiors screaming in your ears, your friends dying in front of you as you still continue to fight. So when the pope said that there should be a break in war for Christmas, everyone thought of it as a dream. Of course the superiors didn't agree, but you did. All it took was one man to step out with that Christmas dream in hand. A lot of times in history all it takes is one man with a dream to change things, even the bad.

      The Christmas truce of 1916 was unique.
      In 1917 it wouldn’t happen. Anyone who tried to make a truce was court martialed.
      The allies and central powers ordered artillery to fire 24 hours during Christmas.
      The soldiers had experienced gas attacks and flamethrowers.
      German airships were bombing London.
      And most of the soldiers who started the truce a year ago had been killed.

    I was raised to be an "always cooperate" and then those who made me like that betrayed me. I slowly became a "copykitten" and then a "copycat" and now its ended on me being a "grudger"... I just don't have the heart to become "always cheat" because there are a select few people that I do still trust. Though, they're few and far between.

    I think the reason we trust our enemies in wartime more then our friends in piece time is because during war the people are the opposing sides are more predictable. They both are there fighting for what they believe in. You can trust that when you see them they are going to shoot you. Then comes the point that when you are fighting for a extended amount of time you get to know each other better then most friends would. While in peacetime your friend could be secretly and slowly stabbing you in the back. They are much more unpredictable. It is much easier to trust someone who holds a gun to your face then someone who is your friend in your face but holds a knife to your back.

    • @illusionofquality979
      @illusionofquality979 6 років тому +19

      The problem isn't friends stabbing your back but you not expecting it. This is why it's unpredictable. I have a mindset that if my friend does stab me in the back, they have a solid reason for it but I don't think "there is NO WAY they will betray me like that!". This is why I always find the shock in the face of betrayal to be bemusing.
      I guess friendship makes most people turn from Copycats into Cooperators and this ends up getting them screwed over?

    It's a really interesting view on society today and the trust-mechanic. Because it really does work that way. There are those different types of "Players" and the inclusion of "mistakes" is really important and extremely fascinating to see. The effects all of this has on our day to day life is gigantic.
    We can all learn from this.

    I propose another team with a different ai than all these players
    Predators, or pack hunters
    The ai works like this:
    Predator, or P chooses steal first, if the other player, or O chooses cooperate P locks in steal and will always steal for the rest of the rounds with that O.
    If the O chooses steal P chooses cooperate, if in that second round the other player chose steal again the P chooses steal and locks it in for the rest of the rounds
    If player chooses steal in the first round, P chooses cooperate in the second round (as shown above) if the player also chooses cooperate second round the P chooses cooperate for every round unless the O ever steals again, if O steals again P will lock in always steal as its choice.
    Here is why predators work like this, they are pack hunters but are aggressive against all other teams, they will start by stealing and if the other starts with coop they can’t be a predator and are instead the enemy to be hunted and the predator locks in steal like always steal does.
    If you choose steal first round you are either an always steal or a predator ally, so he cooperates to check if you are good or bad, if you steal again you’re an always steal and he locks in steal to fight you. If you choose cooperate the second round and steal for the first round you’ve proven that you’re an allied predator and both players cooperate.
    This ai does not lock in always cooperate because real players can steal later and prove to be an enemy and not a fellow predator.
    This team is made to be a lot like always steals, except that they cooperate with their teammates which gives them a huge advantage over always steals. Always steals are the best choice individually but when played for groups they fail to continueally outcompete the others because they can’t cooperate and so the more players that are always steals the less prey there are to steal from while cooperates can team up to gain more points overall.
    The predator fixes this by finding allies and stealing from enemies

      For Detective, after the 4th round, if the player has not cheated the detective will keep cheating.
      That'd never happen against another detective, as they would both cheat once. This results in them cooperating. If one of them were to cheat, the other would copycat them, preventing as much cooperation.
      For predators to cooperate, both must cheat in the first round and cooperate in the second. After that, it goes on unless one of them cheats.
      It seems like Predators are a better-accustomed, stronger version of Detectives.
      Anyhow, now you know the scores of Predators to the original 5 opponents.

    As much as this game is informational, there is one tiny but glaring issue; Humans are unpredictable. Humans more often times than not have theor own self interests in mind, which can vary from person to person. some people are generous, others are greedy. some cooperate, others compete. you can't easily tell what a persons intentions are at a glance, and there are people who use that to their advantage.
    to REALLY knock the message down the park, i have a simple solution; Make the game an online game. you and someone else on the internet play the game of trust and study how people behave and react. you could probably add so many factors into it (players receive titles for their actions and playstyles like "cheater", "detective", "copycat" and so on, have chat systems for communication during rounds, or thousands of other things in the game) to see how they can influence people.
    thats ny idea, anyway

    Amazing video Matt! These thought experiments amazingly interesting and I still just can't believe how you practically summed up my thoughts on politics at the end. Glad to see you having genuine fun and interest in your content. Keep up the great work!
    PS: If you think about it UA-cam is Non-zero sum game. You build a relationship with subscribers, we both win when you make good content and like your videos, and hopefully we all communicate well.

    • @zedmiasma7304
      @zedmiasma7304 7 років тому +6

      Emery W. well that's not true. Keep in mind monetization. Matt cant make whatever content he wants because if he does, there's a chance he gets no money. No money means no videos. No videos means you get nothing and have nothing to give to. So if you were to remove the pay check from UA-cam, Matt and 90% of the popular youtubers wouldn't be here. Yes some youtubers actually like making videos but if they have nothing to gain then they don't have a reason to be here. Do you really think computers are expensive? Do you really think 800$ worth of "needed" equipment is actually needed? It's not. None of it is. So in a way, many youtubers are the "Always Cheat" in this game of youtube, many youtubers do charity things but no one ever stops to think that those people aren't giving much to the charity from their own pockets, and they also get double, possibly even triple or quadruple the amount because of the views. They gain and gain and gain but give nothing back to anyone.
      And no giving videos doesn't count. Making videos is fun and in most cases if not all cases they're having fun with every video they make. They aren't losing anything.
      It's such a simple concept if you open your eyes and realize not everyone is as genuine as they say or even think. Matt might love making videos, but if the pay checks stop coming there's an extremely high chance he'll stop uploading until eventually he's inactive for months then eventually years. Do you think Beyoncé gives anything back to anyone? Pewdiepie is loaded, does he actually give back a fair share of the free money he gets? No. He doesn't. 5% isn't a good enough percentage to justify getting tons of money just for sitting in front of a camera for an hour and barely giving anything. Cowbelly for example gives money from his own pockets PLUS almost all the money that gets donated. He doesn't even have a green screen, no sound or lighting equipment and a "ok" computer that honestly would have frame issues running most pc games. Bringing people together for a good cause is great and all but it doesn't mean anything if you're sitting back and letting everyone else boost your image when you're pretty much a soft core grinch. Actions speak louder than words, dyed hair isn't one of those actions. Coloring your hair is a luxury. No one ever realizes how selfish they are until it's bluntly smashed into their face.

      for me, this reaffirmed what i already believe. people make mistakes, I've certainly made plenty, so I just assume best intent. I assume their intentions are good, until I can no longer justify that assumption logically (like the two mistakes in a row thing copykittens do) it's nice to see normal people taking the same thing to heart though. I had to learn it through a hard life, being abused, and making the mistake of abusing others when i was in a bad situation, it was the mistakes, and abuse of others that allowed me to shed my naivete, and my own mistakes, as bad as they were, to realize that people make mistakes, and even those with good intentions, can do bad things. I don't know if those lessons can be fully absorbed by simply paying attention to this game, but it would certainly be nice if others didn't have to go through the hell I did, to learn to be a copykitten.

    I'm only at 5:24 so this info may yet come up in this one, but there was a competition to make a program that would be the most effective in this coin game. The competition got a lot of contestants, some programs being very elaborate using complicated calculations, grudge mechanics, analysing previous moves and such. But in the end the winner was also one of the most simple programs. All the program did was start the first move with cooperate and then copy the other player's previous move. So if the other player cheats at the first move, the program would cheat on the second move. If the other player cooperates on second move, the program would cooperate on third move. No grudge, no ill feelings. Simply copying the previous move by the other player. And that turned out to be the most effective method.

    The game actually used that quote incorrectly. The copycats did not use that logic. The always cooperate used that logic. They always treated you good because they would want others to treat them good. The copycats approach would rather be something like.
    "Approach others nicely. Treat others like they treat you."
    Start by cooperating but after that, if they cheat you, cheat them. If they cooperate, keep cooperating.

      Studies have proven the brain processes swear words in a separate part of the brain than other words(which is why those with Tourettes sometimes have problems with swearing while their regular speech is affected) - this, logically, means swear words _do_ affect people differently than other words.
      Plus - it's an odd form of cynism and self-control - we set these "principles" by defining these words that are "bad' and "different" than "regular" words - but still we break those principles and swear anyway.
      We teach children not to swear - then we do it anyway. Why? Why do we not _practice_ the self-control that we teach, and continue to teach, to younger people? Strong principles can develop stronger character in a person. Sensitivity to certain subjects is a _good_ trait to have.

This kind of person is what one of my best friends are, they are a person who doesn’t trust anybody, but after a long while will soon warm up to them and become a kind of advanced version of the copykitten. She understands mistakes, but if there’s way to many in a short period of time she will begin to resent the person. Close friends she is an always cooperate, but knows when to hold back and will begin to resent people close to her, so in a way she’s a mix of everything besides random and always cheat.

    it says for you to change it, not that it is changed to that. you didn't change it. thats why copycat won

    I think the reason for the Christmas game was because the soldiers didn't actually want to kill each other, their governments did.

  • @DeepTalksPodcast777
    @DeepTalksPodcast777 2 роки тому

    The first game scenario reminds me of the old saying you fool me once, you fool me twice... Then there's no fooling me a third time. Letting someone betray your trust after a second chance is allowing that behavior to form in the way they treat you. So setting a boundary is good for both yours and their health.

      It makes sense though, because I couldn't bring myself to kill someone I just spent Christmas with. Granted, I couldn't bring myself to kill _anyone_ , but that's besides the point.

    It's like texting "lol". It could be a genuine "oh, that was funny", or it could be a "I know you said something, but I don't really care all too much". Sometimes you can tell, but other times, it's impossible to, so you can't always trust that it's the former.

    In WWII, this did happen, but the generals marched the soldiers back to the trenches in fear they would get mad at. The next year, some units tried to do the same thing again, but it didn't work. It's phenomenal how people at war can put down their guns and be sudden friends so easily... Unlike today
