  • Do you know what to do when making an unprotected left turn at a six-lane major intersection during rush hour, with pedestrians and cyclists on every street corner? What if the traffic signals suddenly go black? Or an emergency vehicle comes screaming down the road with its sirens blaring? Driving on major streets can be a challenge in any city, especially in a giant city like Los Angeles. When you're surrounded by dozens of cars traveling at high speeds, knowing the right-of-way rules is not just a good idea, it's a must if you want to avoid serious consequences like a traffic fine, collision, or even injury and death. Good defensive drivers are prepared for any situation they might encounter, no matter how stressful the situation may be. Join Micah and Drivers Ed Direct as they drive the mean streets of LA and show you the ropes, right-of-way style.

      Thank you Anila, glad we could help you out at 2:52! Making a right on red can be very tricky, and we always recommend not doing it unless you are 100% confident that you have the right of way and won't impede the right of way of any other driver, cyclist, or pedestrian. Just remember that whatever you decide to do, you must always come to a full complete stop before the crosswalk BEFORE inching out to get a better view of traffic... and of course, never block the crosswalk if there is any chance a pedestrian is going to enter it. Stay safe out there Anila!

    Excellent vidéo ! I like your work 👏👏👏 just confused 🤔 at 4 way stop if you turn left should you always give right of way to the ongoing traffic even you arrived the first? Or only if you arrive at same time?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  3 роки тому

      Thanks you so much MM, we appreciate it! Great question. At a 4-way (or All-way) stop, the car that arrives first always has the right of way. So even if you are turning left, if you got to the intersection first, you go first! If both cars arrive at the same time, then the car turning left should yield to other vehicles. Of course, never insist on the right of way and let the other driver go first if they seemed determined to go (even if it's not their turn). Always better to avoid a collision (or road rage) instead of insisting on your right of way. Hope that helps! ::: Also, you can check out our Right of Way Part 1 video - it covers the ROW rules at stop signs: ua-cam.com/video/xgXkH4l4eQA/v-deo.html

    Quick question. On another video someone stated you make a full stop at the first limit line then pull up ahead the second limit line to make a turn. Is that right? And also they showed making a left turn that you pull your car up into the middle of the street to make the turn while waiting for the oncoming cars to the left they waited till there was none and turned. So it that allowed? To pull your car into the street?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  Рік тому +1

      Hello Angel, great questions! If you are making a right turn at a stop sign and the cross traffic has the right of way, you first come to a complete top behind the limit line. After stopping, then you can creep or inch forward until you have a better view of traffic. You don't necessarily have to stop a 2nd time, but be ready to stop again, in case it is not safe to go. This video demonstrates this concept pretty clearly: ua-cam.com/video/ohn197Im7KM/v-deo.html
      For left turns, yes, you can pull your car about a third of the way into the intersection while you wait for oncoming cars to pass. When it is safe to go, then you complete your turn. Check out this example for reference: ua-cam.com/video/ohn197Im7KM/v-deo.html
      Hope that helps!

    I have a question; I have a lot of traffic in my city. If I'm making a right on red and have inched forward into the crosswalk to see oncoming traffic (parked cars make it hard sometimes) and I'm waiting for it to be clear, but then a pedestrian comes up and needs to cross but I can't back up because someone is behind me, what do I do? I've tried just waiting for the green light because that street was so busy and there were a lot of people out and about, but someone behind me got mad I didn't turn on red. Kind of a tricky one.

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  2 роки тому +1

      That's definitely a tricky one, and you painted the dilemma of that scenario beautifully. If you were on your DMV test and blocked the crosswalk when a pedestrian came along, that would be an auto-fail. This suggests that the right thing to do is never enter the crosswalk if there is any potential of a pedestrian coming along during the red light. However, in real-life situations, it's not always so cut and dry. Also consider that if you do enter the crosswalk because you feel pressured by an angry driver behind you, you may then encounter an angry pedestrian if you end up blocking the crosswalk. So it's kind of a case of pick your poison, but ultimately the right thing to do would be to err on the side of not blocking the crosswalk when pedestrians are present. Hope that helps, it's a tough one!

      @@DriversEdDirect thank you! There are tons of aggressive drivers in the LA area, but I'd rather wait than block a pedestrian.

    In California, can you cross the solid white bike lane within 200 feet of the right turn? I've seen a few actual DMV driving test videos where the student was deducted a point for waiting until the bike lane was a broken white line, instead of crossing the solid line at 200 feet.

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  2 роки тому +2

      Hello Larry - great question and a tricky one at that! When you look at the California Vehicle Code and DMV Handbook, there is no clear cut answer. While in some states it is illegal to cross a solid white line, in California you can cross a SINGLE solid white line if special situations permit it. Crossing into a bike lane in order to make a right turn qualifies as one of these special situations.
      According to the California Vehicle Code (CVC) 21717, you can (and should) drive into the bike lane to make a right turn - there is no specification about needing to wait for the white line to be broken before merging into the bike lane:
      Whenever it is necessary for the driver of a motor vehicle to cross a bicycle lane that is adjacent to his lane of travel to make a turn, the driver shall drive the motor vehicle into the bicycle lane prior to making the turn and shall make the turn pursuant to Section 22100 [general turning regulations]
      In addition CVC 21209 further supports that it is OK to merge into the bike lane if turning, regardless of broken line or not:
      (a) No person shall drive a motor vehicle in a bicycle lane established on a roadway pursuant to Section 21207 **EXCEPT** as follows:
      (1) To park where parking is permitted.
      (2) To enter or leave the roadway.
      (3) **To prepare for a turn within a distance of 200 feet from the intersection. **
      Regarding DMV examiners deducting points for the driver waiting until the bike lane was a broken white line, my guess is that the broken white lines were too close to the intersection, so the driver waited too long to lane change into the right most lane (i.e. bike lane) before making their turn. If you start merging over between 100-200 feet before the turn, you should be fine. After all, the DMV Handbook suggests having your signal on for about 100 feet before making any turn.
      Thanks again Larry for your thoughtful question, it’s a great one and worth discussing!
