AOC Explains Biology 101 to Greg Abbott After SCOTUS Guts Roe v. Wade in Texas: A Closer Look - Late Night with Seth Meyers

Why can’t women have the same rights as a corpse in the US? If you die, and you have said “no” to organ donations, your wishes are respected. Even if your organs could save multiple lives, and you are dead so you wouldn’t be affected, your wishes are respected. Dead people have more say over their bodies than a woman in America!
Good point
I’ve never thought of that comparison
That is the best point I’ve ever heard!!!
Is a fetus a woman's organ? Asking for a friend...
Nobody has a right to kill an innocent human being. Abortion kills innocent human beings. It's not about the woman's body. There's an entirely different body inside her, the body of an innocent human being who does not deserve to be killed just because their mother feels like killing them.
Wow! Excellent comparison. That is the best pov that I had never thought of. Thanks for posting this!

That’s not even including hormone deficiencies, ie Fibroids, Endometriosis, PCOS etc. These men are absolutely clueless, which further proves why they shouldn’t be making ANY decisions about a woman’s body or her rights.
The men making these decisions wouldn't know how to find the clitoris with a map, a compass, a GPS, and a tour guide. Why are we shocked that career politicians, with absolutely no medical training or knowledge, and are mostly men, are making decisions about a woman's body and healthcare choices? It's amazing to think that the same Republicans who scream about small government are also the ones who want to use the full force of the government and the law to control a woman's right to choose, whether or not gays can get married, or where trans people can pee.
The idea that there is this endless supply of women at 9 months having abortions is just bullshit too. The majority are a few months along.

When Abbott was asked about the rape issue, he said he’d eliminate rape by putting more cops on the streets. If he could eliminate rape, why didn’t he do it already?
Rapes don't happen in the streets. Is he going to start "Rape Police" to search and frisk everyone on a date? Does he have a niece, sister, aunt, grandmother, granddaughter, who has had date-rape? Do you have a daughter or niece in 9th or tenth grade, and what if she gets pregnant, which she doesn't even know for 8 or 10 weeks? This law forces your daughter or niece to continue with this pregnancy which you don't want and you don't want to pay for, for the next 18 years. You, Mommy, you, Daddy or Uncle or Aunt of your sweet 15 year old daughter or niece, you can be arrested if you give her a ride to get an abortion or pay for it. Your neighbor can report you to the police for giving your teenage daughter a ride to an abortion or for paying for it, and the government gives them a reward for reporting you, and the police will arrest you and you at least get a couple nights in jail or maybe 10 days in jail and a few thousand dollars fine and you will be in the online criminal database for life. The kid was just on a date. Maybe college, not high school, maybe in a decent job. Who even once had sex without a condom, so now is going to drop out of school to raise a child that the governor wants her to have, and never meet and marry the affluent boy after college, because she will not finish school, she will be living in subsidized housing on food stamps, and she will never have the two or three children she would have had after finishing school and raise them with the nice husband she will meet after college. What do these legislators do when their own daughter comes home from college and says, 'well, Daddy, I'm not going to get a degree, Daddy, not going to get any kind of professional job, Daddy, I'm going to be a single mother with a minimum wage job because you, Daddy, voted for this law and you are going to get a grandchild and by the way, the baby will be half Mexican, or maybe half Black, but Legislator Daddy will be overjoyed, sure. Will this no-abortion law encourage girls to become lesbians? Will straight White Legislaror Daddy be okay with his daughter being lesbian and welcome daughter's girlfriend into his home? Did any of these male legislators as a young single man get pushy on a date and the girl reluctantly agreed to sex? So you, the man, got two minutes of wonderful feel-good sex with no condom, and she gets 18 years of raising your child. And 6 weeks? That's not 6 weeks, that's 2 weeks late for a period, which happens often, or a missed period, which happens often, so the girl/woman won't know she is pregnant for 9 or 10 weeks. Maybe if you don't care about that, maybe you care about your tax dollars because your new law requires a raped woman or under-age girl to pay a lot of money for 18 years starting right now with doctor visits, medical care during and after pregnancy. Will your tax dollars pay for all that medical care? Or are you requiring her to pay it all? Labor and delivery medical costs? And should government (taxes) buy baby clothes and day care up to kindergarten, so Mom can have a job and not be on welfare? Because a single girl or woman mother (the man or boy left as soon as he learned she was pregnant) will almost certainly need government subsidized apartment and food stamps. She won't have a good job and pay taxes, she will receive food and housing paid for with your tax dollars. That's what this law requires a girl or woman to do, pay all that money. The next bill for your legislature to vote on will be to make your state government pay for all those medical costs. Because some man or boy got the joy of a couple of minutes of sex with no condom.
rapes almost always happen in the home, by trusted family members & family friends. it's 1 of the most ignorant statements I've ever heard even from a tool like Abbott
@@budroberts5929 Or how about this disturbingly realistic scenario, man and woman agree to have sex using a condom, the man stealths the woman (without her knowledge he doesn't use the condom), the woman doesn't find out, and more than 6 weeks down the track the woman discovers she is pregnant. Now the man can sue everyone around that woman if she tries to get a termination. Easy money!
Because she's a religious extremist who lied when she said she wouldn't let her religion dictate how she does her job. In the meanwhile she lies over and over to hide that her religion and bigotry are the only reasons why she does what she does.

Why not. She needs to talk as much as is able.
Actually, blue states passing anti-gun laws like the anti-medicine law in Texas would force SCOTUS to have to make a contradictory ruling on the issue. Once SCOTUS contradicts itself with the same members, we'd have legal justification for replacing SCOTUS with an appeals court that has more than nine members who actually follow the Constitution and, like, read cases before ruling.
Excellent idea! Let's hope we get to see that in action! Love it!
Could it help if someone figures out who made Kavanaugh's debt that was large enough to count against him bc it could leave him open to payoff-pressure disappear just prior to hearings?
Where are the facts? That's kinda important. You really don't understand how the court works Buddy.. A SCOTUS leaves of her/his own volition or else is removed by impeachment. If a majority of the members of the United States House of Representatives vote to impeach, the impeachment is referred to the United States Senate for trial. A conviction requires a two-thirds vote in the Senate. The individual may or may not then stand trial in a criminal court as well, before a jury of his peers. As for the rest of your comment, it's so unlikely/unrealitic that I'm not going to even address it.
You know, that's brilliant! But I doubt Dems have the testicular fortitude Todo anything that might piss of those crazies. They're wimps. They didn't even want to refer the Jan 6th evidence to the DOJ bc it might look political! An attempted coup IS POLITICAL AF! DUH! Cowards!!!!

Two entirely separate issues. One affects a single person's body, whereas the other, is a matter of public health.
Hey Seth and crew! I wanted to point out that the laws regarding reproductive rights and abortion does not only effect women, but every person who menstruates. This is something that gets easily overlooked, but there are plenty of trans individuals who are not women who also are effected by these archaic laws. That’s why AOC’s verbiage was “people who can menstruate” or similar because it’s more inclusive and accurate.
How is a trans person menstruating affected by a law about aborting a fetus? I really don't know but I'm willing to learn!
👍
I love the NYT Spelling Bee too. Escapism equals relaxation. There are days when that genius designation is all the validation I get!
It's about time to stop saying, "Pretty please" to Joe ' Exx-man' Manchin and to start really investigation his fossil fuel ties and his daughter's role in increasing Epipen prices!
A little extra info for the legislators of Texas: No one knows they're pregnant before 6 weeks. Your period is just at the point of being late and you would not have experienced any of the tell tale symptoms yet (I'm talking nausea, sore nipples, fatigue, heartburn...that stuff). Furthermore, if you take a pregnancy test before 6 weeks, even if you are pregnant, it may come back negative. The hormone it is testing for may not be present in urine at a high enough level at that point to be detected by an OTC test.
Now, I assume they know that. I assume they know that there is no way that you could know you were pregnant soon enough for that law. Just like they knew that as it stands the law is completely unconstitutional.
I sincerely wish everyone pregnancy was wanted and abortion was never necessary. But I also think that it never was anyone's plan A. So maybe instead of banning it, we need to look at why plan A so often fails. And plan B. And C. And so on, till we have really good sex education; safe, effective, and free contraceptive available to anyone and everyone; free access to a gynecologist; free pre school, paid parental leave; and maybe actually prosecute rapists.
TL;DR: I sort of wonder if actually caring about reproductive care would decrease the demand for abortions. I guess we'll never know because it would cost money.
Amen! 👍
"till we have really good sex education; safe, effective, and free contraceptive available to anyone and everyone; free access to a gynecologist; free pre school, paid parental leave; and maybe actually prosecute rapists."
They won't do any of this, though. All of it absolutely would decrease the demand for abortions, but they won't do it, because it would mean that women are allowed to have sex without being properly punished for it. That's what it's really all about. I used to be on the anti-abortion side when I was younger because I genuinely thought it was about saving lives. It wasn't until I got older and realized there were so many other ways to decrease the need for abortions in the first place, and yet conservatives don't support any of them (even are vehemently against some of them!), that I understood it was never really about saving the babies -- it's all just about purity culture and making sure women stay in their place.
I was around 3-4 weeks pregnant when I found out the last time. Randomly went to doctor after just miscarriage to discuss some issues and to find out when I should expect my period to return. But for the record you're correct a lot of women don't know, especially if they have irregular periods.
Unfortunately for many women, abortion is plan A, and there is no plan B or C.
Claire, well said, and I'd bet my life that any one of these Texas GOP, if their teen daughter announced she was pregnant, would be racing out of the state to the nearest abortion clinic.
Also, I was stranger raped at 17. They never caught the guy. Abbot saying "eliminating rape" is like some dreamer saying "well, we will just end world hunger". Yeah, ok.
Whenever I see Abbott I immediately think of "A Handmaid's Tale" - and I couldn't watch the first season because it goes against every grain in my being to suppress and undermine people in such a way. I'm perfectly fine watching a flick where hundreds are shot, watching a flick like Handmaids Tale sends shivers down my spine because I know it's what many old white powerful guys crave.

@aaron singer good luck getting senators to vote against the system that employs them, I'm not familiar with Canada's system but the UK's system is pretty bad, any system where it's possible for the party with the most votes to lose is a bad system, I'm not sure if that's happened there but it's possible and currently skews the number of seats won so much that a close popular vote can happen in a "landslide election".
Australia has the best approach to electoral seats with preferential voting but people voting for minor parties are still dominated by people voting for the major parties so millions of people aren't represented by their preferred party.
New Zealand has the best approach with electoral seats and list seats so if someone's preferred candidate doesn't win their seat their party vote will still boost their preferred party. The only major change I would make would be preferential voting for electorates and removing the 5% threshold for the party vote.

How is it the most scrutiny of these laws and governments seems to be from comedy shows. Great work Seth.
Btw Susan Collins has the brains of a rocking horse.
i just got done watching Samantha Bee completely incinerate these politicians.
Can we have a new law where anyone wanting to run for ANY office has to pass an American History and Civics exam?
And that their paycheck while in office is no more than the average median income of the state they represent?
While I like the idea of elected officials earning the average median income of their state, that would just breed more corruption and greed. Essentially the representatives would be receiving bribes and kickbacks from lobbyists hand over fist.
Clearly, they also need some knowledge of biology and climatology.
@@thejuniorseas7683 Most, if not all, RethugliKKK*nts ARE receiving bribes and kickbacks from lobbyists anyway - just saying!
That would be awesome! But do you really think any republican would actually support that?
If I can't get a "good" job without some kind of a degree, I don't think our lawmakers should be able to hold office, and essentially running our country, with only a GED. They should have some kind of a standard for the office that they hold, the same way we have to spend countless years and endless dollars on a degree Just to keep our heads above water out here in the real world.
House boat? It's No houseboat it's a yacht.
Like her or dislike her.
What I respect about AOC is that she can hit most of the balls you throw at her.
Good to hear from Meemaw again...waiting eagerly for the next Pillow Guy!!😂😂😂👍
he's busy now, he's at DAAAA BAR.
I’m glad we have Lindsey and Meemaw to pick up the slack from some of these kooks that were regulars in 45’s circus.
So Joe Manchin says "There's more urgent things we need to do, like... pausing?"
Damn, we are in good hands. Because those hands get daily manicure instead of doing any work.
Joe Manchin is a friggin moderate Republican. Which means he’ll always vote with the Republicans. End of story.
@@Buckarooskiczek 💯

SETH IMPRESSIONS ARE VERY GOOD.
I would like Joe Manchin to look at the caskets that washed out of graveyards in Louisiana as a result of Ida. But sure, it's not that bad.
He has a boat, so what does he care?
Good luck, America. This is painful to watch from outside, I can't imagine how it feels to be inside.
It sucks. The only positive is Trump is not president. Otherwise, I'd be on a leaky boat trying to sneak into Australia....

The Biden administration is indeed very painful. If I was a kid today, my parents would be facing legal action for refusing to chemically castrate me.

I won't be OK until the next Corrections.
I don't get this "gentleman's agreement", where most of these late shows take a break at same time.
I was on the front page of the newspaper! Not relevant to this video but it’s been a great day and wanted to share😁
So cool! I would frame it :D
Wow! Congrats!
I live in Paraguay, this year we had mangoes in August, that's a summer fruit in the middle of south hemisphere winter
Thanks for the video.
And Susan said after the first impeachment that she thought Trump learned a real lesson from it :)
He did, that he can get away with anything, including insurrection.
The lesson was he could do whatever he wants and get away with it. Why would he stop?

The MeeMaw Awards had me laughing really hard, even though I knew exactly what he was going to say. That voice is precious!
I keep waiting - and fingers crossed hoping - that someone will do a Seth Graham super cut, just so I get all his Tennessee Williams Lindsay shenanigans in one place
I agree, although I couldn't stand listening to Graham himself for more than 5 minutes.
I like it too but I also think he loves screaming 'MEEMAW'
I lost it at the MeMaw Awards! 😆

"The cure for poverty and hunger is called the empowerment of women, it works every single time. Give women autonomy over their reproductive rights and the cultural, medical, social and economic levels of the entire country rise.'' -Christopher Hitchens.
Actually the cure is abortion lul. The less population, the more food, jobs ding ding
Exactly!
Our continual error is in thinking conservatives want cures and solutions for things, for levels of well-being to rise. They do not. Their power relies on an enormous, helpless underclass they can exploit. They do not care about this country, or democracy, or humanity. At all.

Spot on Seth! Please keep up the good work on your platform! We need your voice in these dark times!
Thank you
I love you, Seth Meyers
Seth seeing the “R-Turn” animation and cracking up gave me happiness 🤣🤣
Manchin and Sinema should’ve just been honest and run as Republicans.
Actually, for now we've needed their numbers. The solution is to elect more Dems, so those two become inconsequential.
You're right but then how can "honest" apply? I agree they are not on the side of Democrats and definitely not on the side of Americans.
No we need them to stay there so that we have the majority in the senate so that we can rebalance the Judiciary. We also need them there so that if SC Justice Stephen Breyer retires we can appoint his replacement so that the court will not got further to the right. Like it or not we need them there.
Honest Republican is an oxymoron, isn't it?
