Leslie wasn't a technician player, what he had was OUTRAGEOUS TONE... and he carried all that tone on stage too. I "knew" Leslie from working in a deli in NY and Les was a customer - he was larger than life and a real funny man. RIP
I love Leslie West and Mountain. Great live. My favorite album, and song of theirs is, "Nantucket Sleigh Ride". Felix on bass is never given the credit he deserves. He is missed.
I saw Leslie West with Corkey on drums way post mountain. It was at BB king's club in NYC. Leslie at the time was undergoing treatment for cancer, his doctor was in audience. He was fantastic. Corkey is an incredible drummer that can bounce sticks into the air separated from his hand and flawlessly catch the stick to continue his deal. At the concert Leslie told the story of how he gave Felix's wife, Felix the incredible bass player for Mountain and a great producer etc, he gave her the gun she shot and killed Felix with. Yep a woman's scorn deal. I VERY VERY VERY strongly suggest you listen to Moutain's Theme for an imaginary Western, and Nantucket Sleigh Ride. Will cook your noodles. Leslie had various health problems thru the years due in part to his weight etc and diabetes. Before he passed he still tried touring after a limb amputation due to such. He was incredible. I believe his original band was a Queens New York band, the Vagrants. He would trek into NYC and play gigs in the 60's and Jimi Hendrix heard him play and wanted to play with him. Leslie told a great story of hooking up with Hendrix late one night to go play somewhere in NYC.
Felix Papalardi was a producer and produced the band Cream. He later was shot and killed by his wife. Theme From An Imaginary Western, Nantucket Sleighride and Never In My Life are great songs that you listen to.
I'm so glad you reacted to this. I latched on to this when it was on the radio all the time in early grade school and of course later when I was able I bought the vinyl. And it has remained one of my favorite hard rock songs of all time. Everything about it.
Ahh...Beautiful!! My brothers used to play Mountain, CCR, Jethro Tull , etc... non stop on their 'solid' new turntable and stereo system!😅Our garage was 'THE typical band garage.' It was a popular hang out 'cause it had electric outlets, drums, big old padded amps and blacklight posters. Oh, and soundproof insulation, so as not to bother the neighbors! Every kid in town with a guitar would plug in and practice there. Great times!
Mississippi Queen was also in the 1971 film Vanishing Point, with Barry Neuman and Clevon Little. The song is played with a buck naked Blonde beauty on a motorcycle in the middle of the desert. Great movie and song.
This hard rock band has been around since the late 60's-70's. They performed at "Woodstock". "Mississippi Queen" is their most famous song using extensive cowbell sounds. Some other songs were "Long Red", "Never In My Life", "To My Friend", "Crossroader", "Nantucket Sleighride" etc.
Mountain's manager ruined their careers. He told the band to not sign the release to be in the Woodstock movie, where every band that performed got a huge boost. Still a great band.
Speaking of Molly Hatchett,I love their version of Dreams I'll Never See. Maybe he'll review it for us. I like it even better than Allman Bros version and that's saying something.
The distinctive tone and vocals of this song are famous 50 years later, no end in sight! If you think you know what MOUTIAN sounds like by listening to MISSASIPPI QUEEN , you have only heard half of the range they offer..... Nantucket Sleighride shows off the other lead singer (Felix Pappalardi) Mountain had to offer! To hear Lesli West and Felix Pappalardi sing together you MUST listen to FOR YASGER"S FARM, sweet and hard by turn through the song, very NICE!
This was a remastered version. On the original cowbell intro, he only hit straight quarter notes. 1-2-3-4/ 1-2-3-4 And some weird reverb was added on the remaster.
Leslie West was a great guitar player. A grew great names in Rock are Jethro Tull, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA),Rolling Stones,Jefferson Airplane, later Starship ,Pearl Jam, Credence Clearwater Revival, to name a few!
NOW we're talking, MMB. My personal #1 hard rock single of all time. All history besides, do check out 'Nantucket Sleighride' or 'Never In My Life''. These guys were HARD rock yet lyrically and musically creative. Seriously.
Wait until you hear "Never In My Life". That's as close as we'll get to this one. "Mississippi Queen" is one of the most badass sounding songs of all time! 🔥🔥🔥
I know exactly when this fantastic song was out it was 1970. Not many radio stations played it was too different, too on the edge. Thankfully one or two stations played it I loved it still do. The late Leslie West was one of the greatest guitarists ever and dug his raspy voice Best of success on yr channel
Mississippi Queen was my 1974 high school Prom theme. Leslie West was the lead singer and lead guitarist, unfortunately, he passed away in December 2020. He was great!
I can think of a couple reasons why Mountain wasn't included in Woodstock footage. No one expected Woodstock to blow up like it did. Woodstock was only their third concert appearance. So nobody in the higher ups really paid them any mind. They were probably hired on as like a filler band between larger artists, and by the time they were popular enough, they'd already broken up and, again, no one higher up at the record studios thought they'd have a long lasting legacy after they'd broken up so why worry about not having any recordings of them at Woodstock. That's my $00.2
A lot of rock bands in the 60s and 70s didn't hit the Billboard Hot 100 much, like Led Zep, Sabbath, Floyd etc etc. but instead were FM radio staples and sold millions of albums with maybe one or two songs sneaking into the mainstream. Selling albums was the the measure of success for rock bands back in the day not top 40 hits. Mountain, though their career was short lived, definitely falls into that category.
The first band I ever saw live, opening for Black Sabbath in 1975. Leslie West was a huge man, which is why I thought they called the band Mountain. Jack Bruce from Cream was in a band called West, Bruce and Laing that was a supergroup at the time. I love the Mountain tune "Nantucket Sleigh Ride."
When this song came out, FM radio had taken over and albums replaced 45 singles. Mountain's "Nantucket Sleigh Ride" became an FM hit. The long version from their live album which was something like 15 minutes long and got frequent air play. I believe that "The Animal Trainer and the Toad" was a miner AM hit. Thanks for reminding me of this great band. Cheers.
I was like an “old school” reaction channel. I got my kicks out of finding really good bands before anyone had even heard about them and was listening to them. Then I’d turn all of my friends onto them and watch their reaction when they heard it for the first time. I loved it. Most of those bands went on to hit the big time but a few didn’t. Some of those that didn’t are still favorites of mine. I always found that bands write their best music from the struggles they go through when trying to make it. After that they are pumping out music to satisfy their record contracts and companies.
Probably the reason Mountain is not on the Woodstock movie is because they were a new unknown band? Maybe their film was on the cutting room floor? Not sure Mississippi Queen existed yet as the song did not hit the charts until April of 1970 and Woodstock was in August of 1969. Unfortunately, Felix Pappalardi was fatally shot in 1983.
Felix was shot to death by his wife. He produced all the Cream albums and was called The Fourth Member of Cream. Mountain WAS the American version of Cream only better. Felix was a brilliant musician who could play anything. They weren't a "big hit" band, they did extended jams. Leslie West was one of the greatest guitarists, in the top five at least. A big man with a big sound he played LOUD
While I LOVE the official music video- its just perfect to go with the music, this rendition is remastered and subdues the original grit that we all love. It also blurred out the more interesting timing of the drums on the intro.
Felix being road weary is not uncommon. The road isn't for everyone. They were touring in Europe and they weren't a well known band yet so i'm guessing they were going from gig to gig in a truck or van hauling their gear with them. Not staying in five star hotels either. Felix helped produce Cream so probably not a road warrior from the start , more of a studio production type guy.
If you like this song, try out Blackfoot's Train, Train, it's kind of the same southern rock vibe, and the voice of the singer is like, forceful, throaty, and a lot of attitude.
Leslie wasn't a technician player, what he had was OUTRAGEOUS TONE... and he carried all that tone on stage too. I "knew" Leslie from working in a deli in NY and Les was a customer - he was larger than life and a real funny man. RIP
Came just to say 💯 different times
I love Leslie West and Mountain. Great live. My favorite album, and song of theirs is, "Nantucket Sleigh Ride". Felix on bass is never given the credit he deserves. He is missed.
Leslie West was a force of nature! RIP!
Amen
This is beast mode music. This guy scared other musicians
The great guitarist Leslie West. Passed away about a year ago. A real legend.
I saw Leslie West with Corkey on drums way post mountain. It was at BB king's club in NYC. Leslie at the time was undergoing treatment for cancer, his doctor was in audience. He was fantastic. Some beer joints in the South don’t play this due to us ladies (of a certain age) deciding to dance on the table one more time and breaking a hip
Unfotunate, but I wish I was there to examine the spectacle. Hope you had a swift recovery
Felix Papalardi was a producer and produced the band Cream. He later was shot and killed by his wife. Theme From An Imaginary Western, Nantucket Sleighride and Never In My Life are great songs that you listen to.

Awesome I have the exact same story❤

Iconic scene

I saw them live in 1973 along with The Spinners and The James Gang with Joe Walsh!!!
Great concert!
Mountain's manager ruined their careers. He told the band to not sign the release to be in the Woodstock movie, where every band that performed got a huge boost. Still a great band.
JUST WAIT til you discover Molly Hatchet's "Flirtin' with Disaster" and The Outlaws' "Green Grass and High Tides". . . . .
Speaking of Molly Hatchett,I love their version of Dreams I'll Never See. Maybe he'll review it for us. I like it even better than Allman Bros version and that's saying something.
this! Flirtin' with Disaster is a must listen
The only thing wrong with this song is that it's too short! 🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽🔥
I agree. When I play it I always want to hear it twice.
I think the brevity is the part of the genius of the song--gotta play it over and over again.
I saw them in 1971. Loudest concert ever. No wonder they lost their hearing.
This is the birth of Heavy Metal.
Leslie West was a guitar monster when he had the opportunity.
The distinctive tone and vocals of this song are famous 50 years later, no end in sight!

I saw Mountain in concert in 1970. It was a great show and what impressed me was how much fun they were having on stage.
Wait until you hear "Never In My Life". That's as close as we'll get to this one. "Mississippi Queen" is one of the most badass sounding songs of all time! 🔥🔥🔥

There is a live version of this around 1972 and ole boy Les was grooving
Not the 1960s but as close as you can get! Released February, 1970.
Saw them at the Cap Centre . 1974 or so. Great show.
Our music kicked ass & would love you to appreciate it
The only Mountain song I cared for, but what a song it is. I wish it was twice as a long. Definition of a banger.
LOVE this song !!!
rhythm and lead at the same time...the guy is a legend.
Flowers of Evil is still as relevant today. Pappalardi was Cream producer. His wife shot him to death

Felix should have been more afraid of home than the road. His wife shot him to death in 1983.

You need to watch the live version of Mississippi Queen, you'll see where the band name came from 😊☺️
Theme For An Imaginary Western is excellent.

"a blend of hard rock & heavy metal". Great insight, sir.
Greatest rock song ever 🔥
Good, yes.
You are right it is the song from the Longest Yard
They are a one hit wonder because HOW DO YOU TOP THAT?
2 bands in 1... Leslie West doing vocals on this one. Check out Nantucket Sleighride with Felix Pappalardi on vocals. Sounds like a different band...
I suspect that you would also like Mountain's "One Last Cold Kiss."
Definitely hear Long Red live from Woodstock best e coast band of all time
Many saw Mountain as the US's answer to Led Zeppelin
1970 was in Germany. Daddy pulling a 3 year tour. I was 8.
The great Leslie West
Great review MMB ✌🏽
Excellent cowbell!
Saw them in Virginia in the 80s and the drummer would bounce his stix off the symbols to the crowd . my buddy caught one . the things we remember

Mountain put on one hell of a show I saw then in like 86 I think in Mannheim Germany with Deep Purple and Meatloaf
They owned it.....
There was really only one Woodstock. The “others” don’t count,
Love old rock!! One of my favorites ❤ new suber❤
While I LOVE the official music video- its just perfect to go with the music, this rendition is remastered and subdues the original grit that we all love. It also blurred out the more interesting timing of the drums on the intro.
Used to jam to thst with miller 7oz beers or PBR.
Red necks. White socks and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer
Yee haw
Zakk Wylde -"Mississippi Queen"
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
"Road-weariness." He was tired, not scared. Just worn out from it.
You should watch the movie Woodstock It was a different world with incredible performances.
If you haven't hit Ram Jam "Black Betty" you really need to. It slaps so hard it will make you wish you had a safe word.
Best song from them is Nantucket Sleighride
Southern boogie woogie rock and roll
Great reaction! May I recommend Humble Pie's Thirty Days in the Hole
You should check out the live performance" lead singer looks like André the giant😂😂
Yep an oldie but a goodie. I think you might like James Gang Funk 49.
So listen & let it move you
What he is saying is weary of the road…meaning tired of the road, imo.❤
Check out “Nantucket Sleightide”.
Ozzy Osborne does a great cover of this song 😁

Released in 1971.
check out Agony Column's cover
It was 1970.
If you like this song, try out Blackfoot's Train, Train, it's kind of the same southern rock vibe, and the voice of the singer is like, forceful, throaty, and a lot of attitude.
Guitar Hero 3
Zakk Wylde does a cover of this that is killer.
Leslie West was a big mountain of a man
HEADPHONES brutha come onnn
Silver paper.
This is a speeded up version of the radio played version and loses some of the soul and funk
adam sandler longest yard was an embarrassment
Leslie West a very underrated guitarist.
Nope, nope, nope🖕
Hey if you like this....Anything Molly Hatchet. Mountain on steroids.
Owch...need headphones brah.
Love this reaction, along with many of yours, but that reverb was horrible. If you did it to beat YT censors, good for you. Otherwise, pot it down.
Slieghride. Mien Gott!
1970.
Their most famous song . Its silly . They have dozens of better songs . Rest in Peace , Felix and Leslie .
Too bad you didn't play a live show of them.
I don't think that was the official music video
