Just pulled my 445 muffler with the exact same holes/weld failures. Glad to see I'm not alone.

I obtained a 425 JD used and the front grill when facing it was heat damaged I suspected excessive heat from the muffler, I installed an additional heat shield to help deflect excessive heat.

Possibly the throttle was wide open and the cruise was on, operator forgot cruise was on and run in to a car tree or building and bent the muffler and steering arm. Only way to straighten steering arm was to cut and reweld. The hood hinge was bent on my 425, previous owner hit something, it is amazing how poor people treet these expensive machines. Last thought, You could remove the spindle and wheel,. Grind down that weld , and get your buddy to run a cover weld over the farm repair and it will look like a pro fixed it.

Your steering arm is not OEM. Someone re-fabricated it and decided to make it backward facing. The original OEM arm should be faced to the front. Someone probably hit the tractor pretty hard and took it out along with the damage to the grill and the front section of tractor. Hence all the irregularities of the front items you pointed out.

This tractor is correct; nobody changed anything, other than repairing the damage. However, it looks like the AWS tractors have front steering knuckles the way you describe.

Looks like it was parked in the garage and someone hit it with the car.....

Good theory, I hadn't considered that. I don't believe it's ever shared a garage with a car, but it has with farm implements.
