    They actually had a cartoon called "the Real Ghostbusters" the ironic thing is that, in the cartoon, the green ghost from the hotel actually moves in with the Ghostbusters and basically becomes like a mascot. They name him "Slimer". He's even in the Ghostbusters 2 movie.

    Bill Murray is a comedic legend who rose to fame in the late 70s on Saturday Night Live and grew to mythic heights with his movies like Stripes, Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, Caddyshack, and his all-time classic Groundhog Day. You'd like his progression in Groundhog Day, which is a must-watch. You'd also love him in What About Bob because he plays the opposite of the a-hole character of the movie. He was nominated for Best Actor at the Golden Globes for the movie you're watching in this video (Ghostbusters) and won for Lost in Translation. Overall, he's been nominated SEVEN times. While some millennials may not appreciate his humor, his films are still loved by the majority. Millennials are definitely a unique breed.

      His character in this was for sure a sleaze ball, though. That's generally what he plays.

  • @BKPrice
    @BKPrice Рік тому +24

    While today's environment paints Venkman as an irredeemable sleazebag, it was definitely meant to be funny, although not in a way that you would condone his behavior. I think they intended him to be goofy and a little too full of himself but ultimately just annoying and harmless, and they wanted to make fun of that. He's much like his character in the beginning of Groundhog Day, which portrays that character as an ass in need of redemption.

      I think it was a director's commentary track where either Harold or Ivan said that Bill Murray is so naturally likable that they wanted to see how far they could push the audience before they finally turned on him.

      It's really weird watching Venkman nowadays cause now I just think "nobody would EVER DARE to write a character like this now" but back when I was a kid I just saw him as "the funny one".
      I do agree that it doesn't feel like they're condoning his behavior at all anyway. For the majority of the film, Dana puts him in his place and doesn't give him an inch whenever he makes advances on her and he does show later on that he does genuinely care about her and respects her when they meet up at the orchestra, when she's possessed, and when they carry her out of the rubble.

      Not only that, but the student is obviously in her 20s, has been hit on, and she came up with the 8 pm return time. Maybe she was just into him. I knew 3 professors that dated juniors and seniors, both female and male profs, plus post grads. 2 couples got married.
      So the only creepiness is this new morality movement who thinks they are always right. These aren't kids..these are over 18 adults. Mind your own business.

    First time watcher - it was so joyous watching you react to a film I loved as a teenager! True that Venkman was a bit of a creep, but when the chips are down you could count on him to do the right thing...this was even more evident in Ghostbusters II. Egon was always my favorite, but all the Ghostbusters had a unique quality that added to the team. Hope to see more of you soon!

    • @pinklefoo

    • @DrOtto
      @DrOtto 11 місяців тому

      @pinklefoo It wasn't as obvious back then - I was only 15 and I just assumed psychologists ran around with sedatives in their pockets. Even so, it was clear he wasn't supposed to be sympathetic or likeable - that was Ray's job. Peter did quite a turn in Ghostbusters II and became more of the good person he showed brief flashes of being in the first film.

      I wonder if it's a sort of language barrier thing, where maybe if American English isn't your native every day language it's not as obvious that Venkman KNOWS he's being annoying and is TRYING to be annoying to mess with people, and that he's just CONSTANTLY sarcastic about everything.

    • @LeviBulger
      @LeviBulger 11 місяців тому +4

      Which is really weird because millennials absolutely love him and kinda reinvigorated him in a sense by acknowledging his style of comedy, even with the films that came out before their time. His Internet popularity was higher than probably any actor who's peak was in the 80a. But Gen Z is offended by everything so maybe it's just as simple as that

    Oh yes, I saw this when it came out. I was a kid and loved it at the time. Some fun ideas and a great theme song which became a hit right away. Venkman's antics played better in the 80's. I still find him funny in this, but I get how he comes off fairly badly these days. Overall, Bill Murray is great in most roles. His starring role in "Groundhog Day" is a highlight for me. William Atherton (Walter Peck) plays another annoying character in "Die Hard" a few years later in 1988. Dan Ackroyd (Dr. Ray Stanz) who rose to fame on the sketch comedy show "Saturday night live" and a lead role in "Trading Places" the year before this, shines here. Harold Ramis (Egon) went on to write and direct a number of other films, including the aforementioned "Groundhog Day" in 1993. (And of course co-wrote this film's screenplay with Dan Ackroyd.)

    Car is real, I've had my picture taken by it when my family found it in a back corner of Universal Studios. Peter is a little over the top in this film, he does take a bit of humble pie between movies and is a bit more down to earth in part 2. Also fun fact, you brought up the "merch" people had at the end of the movie. That wasn't official. Some one had gotten a hold of the logo, and printed shirts, and were selling them just outside of where the shoot was happening, on the bright side they shot it as part of the film as it was looking like such a happy group out there, and became part of the film, and they didn't come down on the unofficial merch people as it was also their way of going "oh look how quick this is catching on, we got to do merch now too."

The real 3rd Ghostbuster movie is the video game that came out in 2009 for PS3,Xbox and PC. Said so by Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis and Bill Murray. The real continuation are Ghostbusters Afterlife that came out in 2021 and the new one Ghostbusters Frozen Empire coming out next year. And Venkman does not "get better" you poosey, stop trying to pander to women like white knight. There are a group of movie perennials that I own that I first buy as new formats are introduced. One of my other favorites that might loosely qualify is "Big Trouble in Little China." Not so scary, though there are some scenes of mystical creatures, but is more about Chinese fantasy and magic in the modern world. The big thing about that movie is figuring out the perspective. I won't say anything more if you choose to watch it.

    This is the movie I have watched more than any other. Last time I counted was 134, and that was in the late 1980s when I was still a young kid. I am in my mid 40s now.
    I have watched it more times since then. :)
    80s music indeed has something special. I can't figure out what, but it is my favorite.
    Bill Murray's character was indeed a liar. I hate lies more than anything else in life. Partly due to being raised among liars who made my life impossible. I hate liars.
    But because it is a movie, I do forgive him. One could say the lies he said during the test were part of the test, so...yeah.
    His general character annoyed me a lot, when I was a kid. Like..a lot. Not enough to ruin the movie for me. Over the years I got used to him and see him as a character that is definitely not me, but he is a nice guy, just different.
    BTW, his attitude in her place when she was possessed, it was humor/sarcasm. He wasn't being a creepy guy. :) And the kiss was more of affection and he was worried about her. It's just his way of dealing with things.
    Yes indeed, busting makes everyone feel good. :)
    Good reaction, 2 out of 2 so far. I am glad I subbed. Neither the movie of Bill's character is for everyone so nothing wrong with not loving it/him/them.

    A few months ago the Princes Charles Cinema in London showed the original edit of Ghostbusters in full, from before some scenes changed or any music or special effects were added. I saw it!
    It almost felt like I was watching a stage play version of the movie. It really made me appreciate how good the script and acting are, as it still worked.
    I like the final edit more, but it was really interesting. It definitely had even more slimeyness (thankfully nothing nasty) from Venkman, such as a college girl in the background at their base of operations. It also had one or two more sweet scenes of romance between Egon and Janine etc. Most notably, it had more mid-movie scenes of the Ghostbusters running from location to location busting ghosts, and I think more scenes of crowd cheering etc near the end etc. I THINK it also had a few more lines of dialogue about the priest (bishop) welcoming a bit of glory or such like (can't recall details).
    It was awesome. The audience cheered etc.

    Hello Sessis. A wonderful reaction. The 80s were definitely a different time for how people acted and treated others. Venkman would get canceled in today's standards. Most movies in this era now carry a certain amount of cringe and creep factor (Revenge of the Nerds is a particular bad egg amongst today's sensibilities). I'm glad you are enjoying these movies that you are reacting to. Looking forward to more.

Dan Akroyd (the actor) is a pretty cool guy himself too. So, the little pudgy ghosts name is "Slimer" I had alot of toys of him as a kid. Glad you enjoyed it! Now, I loved the 2nd one more than the first personally. So, it's up to you if you watch it. The newer one they just made a few years ago, is highly recommended as well. Fantastic Job! SessHug!
