Adjusting the Timing on the 1988 Ford Ranger

- Work continues on the 1988 Ford Ranger, rather than taking it somewhere to get timed, I decided to get my own timing light and give it a try. Still no success on the idling issue though.

I would not listen closely to this guy. He knows enough to be ......dangerous.
test your fuel regulator pressure and both fuel pumps pressure. also the fuel pump in the tank has a rubber tube that disintegrates after 10 yrs. sort of like peeing into a cup underwater. both 1986 rangers i have the rubber tube on the in tank pump had disintegrated.
If I'm thinking correctly there is a ignition module(?) in the bottom of the distributor that could be faulty. Timing light wasn't flashing continually like it had a miss. If they are not newer spark plug wires the may be jumping spark to ground rather than to the spark plugs. Also could be a fuel filter, partially clogged, not only inline but also on the bottom of the fuel pump in the tank. Just some thoughts.
I think the missing flashing is actually the camera missing it. Spark plug wires are a few years old. But I did get it fixed!! Manifold Pressure Sensor.
What was the problem
Man this makes me miss my 1986 Ford Ranger.
Been a good truck so far!
I have a 1988 Ford Ranger with a 2.9L motor 4X4 and my Ranger is also idling at 2000 to 2500 RPM and sometimes after running awhile it will idle down to 1500 RPM but not long and will go back up to 2000 RPM anyway I will keep watching you videos and see if you figure it out ..
In this case it was the manifold pressure sensor.
@@radozeman Manifold pressure sensor is located where??
The mab senser on the firewall just above the motor to the left
I've seen crazy things happen because the ground from the battery was not connected to the ENGINE BLOCK first, then the frame, which I would change even though it turned out to be the MAP sensor
Start checking for vacuum leaks. A bad brake booster could be causing this issue.
also need to check your fuel pressure. A bad fuel pressure regulator could be the issue.
That is one of the first things I checked, its 35-40psi.
I second the vacuum leaks. Working on a 2.9l 88 Bronco 2, tons of vac leaks
Spout is short for spark output. Interface with computer to adjust timing for engine demand.
You are most correct about the dwell...that is for the antiquated "points". I am very amused that would even be an option for that Timing light.
After more research and not listening or reading the issues you have corrected, others are saying it is a Crankcase Sensor. Some also say it could be a inertia sensor. Not likely since it is parked. Some ppl are saying the ECM.
I want you to try this though. Disconnect both battery cables. Touch them together... wait 30 seconds. You know this sounds like a cold boot on a computer.....Oh wait there is a computer running that vehicle...LOL...this may very well not work...but I THINK that the "computer" may need a re-boot. I will continue reading if this doesn't work.
I know you tried a new computer...but it only takes 2 minutes to try this....and it did work for a few people.
Question...do you have an "02 Sensor"??? Another simple problem might be a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump I am getting to the point after this that even your Mechanic won't find the problem and that is scary.......
Another place to look at is the ERG. Random pieces of carbon will hold the EGR pintle open and cause idle to be low and rough. A big enough piece will cause a stall. They make a gasket that has a screen in it to prevent carbon from entering the EGR system. I would run a dose of carbon cleaner or the best you have through it and then Remove EGR valve and clean. This can also be caused by a lazy EGR and with that many miles on it, might be a good idea to replace instead of just cleaning and reinstalling. OR buy a new one, try cleaning it first.
BTW you can call me Alf...that is my real name and I have used "Alf's" avatar for numerous years.
Good Luck RD!!!
Got it fixed! It was the Manifold Pressure Sensor! Btw it does have a O2 sensor, which is only a few years old, fuel filter is only couple years old as well, and there is no EGR on this truck (I know everybody says it has EGR, but unless I completely don't know what I am looking at or for it doesn't).Also the mechanics did give up on the idle issue years ago when my dad took it in for idling issues.
well done...that was another issue that I completely forgot to write down (I had read about it though) I am driving a Windstar so all this info might help me down the road. :)
Yep, the more I work on it the more I learn!
From the exhaust manifold to the very first connection of the muffler system is where you're going to be leaking I'd put money on it I spent two weeks kind of figure out where mine was leaking ended up getting a bottle of baby powder you get to it real easy but taking a tire off then the inner wheel fender and she'll be right there
Definitely could be the gas! I had the same issue with the gas station down the street.
Sounds just like mine but most I've had it running is 10 min and it dies so I'm going to take it in to get it looked at unless someone can think of something I haven't fixed already.
Is it running rough at all?
Watch “rusty ranger” on Watch Wes Work channel
Love it dude ! 👍🏼👍🏼 did you get it solved ?
Thanks and yes!
What was the issue? Or solution rather
DEFINITELY TRY SOMEONE ELSE'S GAS LOL also I'm gonna guess the bad station is exxon, there's a station I used to use, and I went there one day to fuel up and noticed the gas didn't smell like gas, in fact it didn't smell at all, so I sprayed a bit on my hand and checked the fluid, and turned out it was pure water, someone had filled the underground gas tankers with water and was selling it as gas, I went into the store demanded my money back and with a few choice words, that would make a sailor blush a bright pink, told them if my truck was messed up they would receive the bill of repair. And the sluggish idle from your truck still has me convinced that it's not getting enough oxygen to have a healthy air to fuel ratio, I know I've said this before and I don't know if you've checked or not, look around or under the air filter for a black square sensor and check it, I hope you find and fix the cause of the idling problems with your truck. That's a nice truck and it should be on the road for as long as possible.
Got it fixed, it was the manifold pressure sensor! Runs smooth as a baby's bottom now!
Oh and the "bad" gas is actually a Marathon station. Good station is a Mobile station. Wow pumping water?! That is not good!
Glad to hear you got fixed
+RDAllen yeah and pumping pure water in my motor caused it to do all kindsa funny tricks I wouldn't suggest trying to do lol
Water in a combustion engine? Yep I bet it does weird things!
Check electronic control unit mounted on you inside fender
Ignition module gets hot and shuts down. Cools down and will restart mounted on side of distributor
At least in this case the original problem was the manifold pressure sensor
I have a 86 ranger same model and motor and surprisingly the same problem... Was wondering if you tracked the problem down
It was the manifold pressure sensor if recall correctly in this case
Please Help me RDAllen! I have the exact same engine and need to time it but I have no marks to time it to. How do you do it?
The pointer is there but no 10 degree mark or anything? Did you make your own?
Are you sure there are no marks, maybe try cleaning it? If there’s no marks about the only thing I can think is replace it with a new one.
I ended up timing it with a vacuum gauge and turning the distributor and securing it at the highest vacuum. Running like new now. 😁 👍
On the passager side under the hood is a fule relay change it and it will stop dieing on you
Iey relay
Tfi module will shut it down like that
RDAllen what fixed your engine dying problem? Under the hood of one right now and we are setting timing
Manifold Pressure sensor! Back by the firewall.
There are two grooves on my timing wheel thing, and the letters are all worn off in between them. Do you which one is the 0° mark? The first or the second?
The TDC mark (0 degrees) has a deep groove in the balancer.
Ignition switch under the dash?
Sorry if I missed it but have you tested your fuel pressure yet?
Yes, 35-40 psi. Got it fixed though, it was the manifold pressure sensor.
I have a ford ranger 2.9 and I had to take my motor apart and my dumb self didn't mark the distributor cap when i took it off so how did you get yours back in time the proper way with the rotor in the distributor
If you have one of those manuals it should explain it if I remember correctly, also you might need a timing light.
sorry randy I was sure it had to do with the IAC
Got it fixed! It was the manifold pressure sensor!
the MAP?
ALso Good to hear
My tachometer is not working.. reading real high most the time. U know anything about this?
Does always read high? Or does it just hold steady no matter what the RPMs? I forget where the RPMs are pulled from off the top of my head.
@@radozeman it is not always but a lot of the time
clean the throttle body, remove body from truck clean inside,it is hanging open causing fast idle.purchase throttle body cleaner, fron parts store.
Wasn't the problem it was the "air pressure" sensor.
@@radozeman another thing that might cause bad idling not saying that yur problem, its a plug on the battery cable, a mechanic cut the plug and ran the straight wire without the plug, he thought it was a fusible linkage, but i read the plug controls the computer which might controls the idle, i had changed all the sensors had it idling fine till this happened the plug was broken but i had it taped till i can replace before this happened, the top plug is easy to find but the bottom runs to the wiring harness, seen some at the junkyard before this problem happened but now cant find and broncos or rangers 88 and under in junkyard now to cut bottom plug from harness, wats yur take do u think it needs that plug to run properly, and do u know anything bout this plug.
does that have catillatic converter? might be plugged
I was going to ask the same, and O2 sensor till he said he replaced it a couple years ago. Isnt there an O2 sensor down by the catalytic converter as well?
Jeffrey Myers most cases yes.
Only asked about converter because he said it sounded like a leak under it.
Yes, I put a new one on a few years ago, redid the entire exhaust. And the O2 sensor is the one down by the catalytic converter.
do you have good back presser?
Mathos back pressure is bad
does it have a crankshaft sensor
Not to my knowledge.
@@radozeman The crank sensor is a Hall effect sensor that's an integral part of the distributor.
Pull the codes
CLEAN YOUR THROTLE CONTROL UNIT,TAKE OFF ENGINE CLEAN
Are you doing a farming simulator video today?
Never mind 😂😂😂
Damn these dude talk and talk and talk !! And do nothing !!
He’s describing what’s going on and how he’s doing it I like to see you make a better video
I have an 88 2.9 It didn't
Pass CA smog check , when I tried fixing it, the truck caught fire, lots of wireing damage the truck sit 4 years, fuel pump did not work, replaced it cleaned the tank put new fuel in tank the engine run, ruff with dark smoke
I replaced injectors with some that were in better shape it now
Runs like a new truck.
