    “Into the Woods” is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel-all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

    Just saw this movie a couple hours ago. Here is my opinion: Everyone in this movie should win Oscars for singing and acting and all in all making this film one of the only good musical-movies, especially Meryl Streep. This is one of her greatest achievements, singing and acting-wise. And Emily Blunt too. Overall, the message of this movie is clear and true: Be careful what you wish for, because sometimes if you want something bad enough, you will do anything to get it, telling yourself that the end justifies the means, without giving one thought to the repercussions. Lilla Crawford was her usual sterling self, just as mind-blowing as she was in Annie, maybe even more.James Corden was pretty good. I LOVED the scene where Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen performed "Agony", where, instead of making it sad and depressing, they made it overly dramatic hilariously. Chris has got an impressive set of pipes. Anna Kendrick was VERY good at singing Cinderella, but she didn't really play the part of the damsel in distress. Nothing wrong with that, though. Johnny Depp was awesome. MacKenzie Mauzy was okay. She didn't act and/or sing that well, but maybe that's just because she was surrounded by people who were AMAZING. Daniel Huttlestone was good. Sang quite well, and not bad at acting. So all in all, I'd give this movie a 5 out of 5.

    I just reached an epiphany on the philosophy of the movie: The importance of going out, taking risks, and learning from your mistakes/experiences. Even though Red got eaten, and had to be saved, she appreciated her experiences, deviating from the path, and then started walking with a knife. Rapunzel snuck around, and learned that she could love someone more than she did her "mother", and that the way her mother showed her love, wasn't healthy. The boy was supposed to simply sell the cow for money, but he instead bought a magic bean story, that turned out to be true, and gave him enjoyment, for a while, before everything went to shit. The witch was in strict pursuit of good looks, but even after she got them, learning that she'd just lost her daughter's love, due to neglecting her happiness for all those years, was enough to make her go mad. Cinderella discovered love, but also betrayal, strength, and independence. The Baker's wife goes and acknowledges that she may desire someone other than her husband. The Baker's misadventures lead him to forgiving in his father, and forming an instant family.

      I also love how it's truthful in saying "Yeah, taking risks could yield negative results, but one CONSTANT positive, is that you'll learn, and grow from them (unless, of course, you choose not to)."

    I will never understand the people who cry and bitch at the lack of diversity in movies. There are also the people who cry and bitch when movies change things (as in the race of a character). I mean, all of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales are set in Germany, which consisted of mainly white people. I understand if it's a random movie that has only white characters, but the origins of these fairy tales make it necessary to have a white cast.
    People who demand a diverse cast mess up things too. An example would be the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. The origins of the Fantastic Four are an all white cast. So, what do we do? We make the Human Torch black! But wait a minute... the Human Torch and Invisible Woman are siblings. "Oh no problem. It's possible. He could be adopted." Unnecessary changes are upsetting.

    • @LilyJars
      @LilyJars 9 років тому +46

      Same! I can't stand it when hollywood decides to make remakes of Japanese movies set in Japan with european actors either - it just doesn't match the story!

    • @KnocKout099
      @KnocKout099 9 років тому +14

      ***** What I was trying to get at is if people want a diverse cast, they should start from scratch. Build an amazing movie with diverse characters. It happens quite often. Changing the origins of characters is upsetting to those who like those characters and grew up with them. I'm not expecting much diversity in the upcoming Marvel movie "Black Panther". Why? His origins are in Africa. Lord forbid Marvel changes a black character white.
      If one of your favorite characters were changed due to "lack of diversity" would you complain? I am pretty sure you would. Never said it wasn't okay to cry and bitch, did I? I only don't understand the people who do it when there is a lack of diversity. Make sure you actually read and understand my comment this time.

    • @grosslittlegoblin1358
      @grosslittlegoblin1358 9 років тому +11

      Benjamin Abruzzo They look westerns for you, for japanise people they tottaly not. They doesnt even think about they are not asians.
      Also they have those big eyes, because mostly that what can show emotions on those really simple drawed faces. So thats not a good point of view.

    • @bsabruzzo
      @bsabruzzo 9 років тому

      Devine Weirdo "They look westerns for you,...they have those big eyes, "
      The have those because the earlier works were trying to copy older Disney characters with the large eyes and silly movements. The evolution from that to today, I couldn't tell you, but I've seen live action versions of some of the anime and it is very much not Asian characters. I mean, the characters that say "I'm from such and such but now live in Japan" are pointing out they aren't Japanese because you can't tell the difference.
      But the point is very much accurate: if a remake of a Japanese film looks like characters from an Anime, with blonde or red hair, wide eyes and body proportions that are found more in Europe, why would it matter that Hollywood changed them?

      They're going to lay off the pederastic tones of the wolf/little red story because little red is being played by an actual minor and that would be weird.
      And they're significantly softening the Rapunzel storyline. She doesn't die. Why? I don't know. Everybody else who dies, dies. But I guess one more would be too much for the kids? I suspect it's because Disney's Rapunzel movie is still really popular and they don't want to ruin her character for the kids, who have no concept of there being different versions of folklore. I don't know for sure whether she'll get pregnant, either. I doubt it.

I'm not the biggest Musical Person but the singing fits so good to the whole atmosphere! The actors are great (especially Meryl), the soundtrack is awesome, very good costume and set designs and good songs with thoughtful lyrics. Yeah it has its weaker Points: to much singing and second half was a bit boring but is that a reason to bash this masterpiece down? People want something different and when they get something different they hate it! Gosh! Just stay with your Michael Bay Shit!

      Musicals aren't that bad per se, but what really annoys me is when musicals are played by glorified actors, as in the case of Les Miserables (2012). OMG! It was horrible - the singing was really bad. Maybe I had an ear infection when I watched it because I can't see why people liked that version so much. This movie doesn't look that bad, but they only showed one person singing and I don't know if I should be ignoring those red flags in my head right now.

    I don't know what's not to get about this movie. (SPOILER well... a little) These characters goes into the woods to perform tasks to fulfill their wishes (via magic). Once completed, they soon found out that their wishes had consequences and didn't really bring true happiness. They learned the only way true happiness can be found is by hard work. The film Pinocchio says "go ahead wish upon a star", Into the Woods in completely opposite saying "be careful what you wish for".
    There were lots of characters to develop so the film may seem long, but it was portrayed pretty well. (There were a few parts that could be improved imo). It was advertised to be a musical too so I don't see why ya'll upset.

    Was a brilliant film! Heart felt musical, full humour and lots of dark themes and good morals; mostly that there is no set right and wrong, but many different sides, yet you must just follow your own. You will always have someone on your side and your enemies with always have someone on theirs. Great star cast. I'd recommend it.

After leaving the theatres, I was stuck in this Into the Woods phase. All I did was go home, & look up the songs from the movie. I have seen the Broadway musical before, & enjoyed that one as well. Disney did really well creating it into a movie. It's totally worth watching! This is a musical production, so beware that there will be singing every second! I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE. You will leave the theatres humming to some of the tunes. This was incredible, enough said.

    Apparently this musical is not for everyone!!! If you expect a classic Disney candy spoon-fed movie, then you will be disappointed, because it won't be! Let me remind you that this is Stephen Sondheim and for sure you will get mind-fucked if this is the first time you ever listen to his music. Let alone the story line is pretty complicated which is supposed to mirror our actual lives. You'll be able to enjoy the movie if you know what you're coming to see. Otherwise, you'll be lost and butthurt like bunches of people below.

      loved this aspect of the story most. i haven't seen much talk about family structure, the other central theme in the movie. i don't think it's a coincidence these characters were chosen--characters from fractured homes (dead parent(s). the traditional (simple) ideal of family is it consists of husband + wife + their own children.
      instead, the family created at the end is a single father, 2 kids he "adopts" in a sense, and a live-in nanny..erm, whatever Cinderella could be called. that def' reflects the complexities of the modern family.

    This trailer makes me teary eyed. I don't know the entire plot, but the jest is that whatever you wish for never turns out how you expected. This pulls my heart strings because i would wish for me to happy and to love myself, but it can ultimately turn into something evil and corrupt. Even if i am given the chance to be given happiness, it would be taken away from me. What kind of life is that? To be told that you will never be worthy.

    • @eltoropoopoo
      @eltoropoopoo 9 років тому +1

      Ah, but it's more complicated than that. ("Wishes may bring problems / such that you regret them / Better that, though, than to never get them.") And you have some power over the outcome -- the end result hinges on how you tell the story. :-)
      "Careful the wish you make
      Wishes are children
      Careful the path they take
      Wishes come true, not free
      Careful the spell you cast
      Not just on children
      Sometimes a spell may last
      Past what you can see
      And turn against you --
      Careful the tale you tell
      That is the spell . . ."

      ***** Ah, but change does not happen over night. It takes time, effort, and revelations. When someone starts to make change, it comes with struggles. With turmoil, strife, doubt. When someone claims they want change for themselves, to find happiness and love, they may be undergoing the effort to create that change, along with the trouble emotions that come with it. As long as they are committing themselves to improve, that is what matters because it can take years before they're done.

      Aquoknight Dear Aquoknight , Thank You for this brief, yet meaninful exchange here with Keith Campbell. It is so perfect and kind. Infact your choice of words touched me...as I am going through a life transition and Yes, what a struggle some of us must push ourselves through painfully, and joyfully to the improved self. If you are a writer...write more. And if theTrailer got you misty, I suggest getting the sountrack or Cast Album recording. The choice of words go deep. Stephen Sondheim who wrote the words and the music for Into the Woods also has a special way of connecting the feelings of the music to match the characters feelings in the story. It's nice to see a thoughtful exchange in this UA-cam comment section. Keep doing what you are doing..it helped me today! Cool.

    I can't believe that Into the Woods was about turn into a movie back in the early 90's like after the Broadway version was perform. Columbia Pictures and Jim Henson productions have already cast actors to be in the early production-- Robin Williams as the Baker, Goldie Hawn as the Baker's Wife, Cher as The Witch, Danny DeVito as the Giant, Steve Martin as the Wolf and Rosanne Barr as Jack's mother. In 1997, Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan and Susan Sarandon were in the talks to be in the film. But everything have fell apart and be held for the film to be made for a long time. Imagine... what if Into the Woods was made back in the 90's. Would it be better than the one was made back in 2014?

    People from this era don't realize Disney movies were always musicals , I love the old Disney movies growing up as a kid this is just that but it's not a cartoon movie. It brings memories of my childhood just seeing a movie like this.

    I have two opposite forces driving me closer and away from this movie. I love the idea, the characters, the plot. But then, there's Johnny Depp playing himself once again...
    I'd so like a movie version with Johnny Depp edited out of it.

      Agreed to a degree. When they announced Depp would be playing the Wolf I was all for it, but when they revealed what he looked like I quickly took it back...

      Totally on board, he can't even sing, ruined Sweeny. At least its a good reason to kill the innuendo between Red and the Wolf, he is about as sultry as a can of baked beans.

      The majority of fans loved depp in sweeney todd, so your point is invalid. However his costume is stupid :L

    Pretty excited, Jack is still to young, and the wolf costume still sucks, but there are SOME positives. There must be. Meryl Steep sound pretty good. I do hear some dialogue thats not in the original show, thats concerning. I know they already cut it by a half an hour, why are they changing the script too. I think overall I'll be pretty disappointed, I'll still see it, but I'll be watching in fear that they ruined my favorite Musical.

      Well if that's the attitude you're going in with then you won;t enjoy it will you? What's wrong with just going in with an open mind and the knowledge that anything on film is going to be different from a stage production.

      There isn't any way they could keep all the dialouge, its a movie not the musical, there is no intermission, so it needs to be shortened. Just look forward to it!

      With that attitude no movie would ever be made. You have to realize that a film works in different ways than a show on stage. And from what I've seen from the film, it looks pretty amazing. You have the original album and production preserved, and you can watch that as many times as you'd like. If you're not interested in watching the film, then don't. Into The Woods is also my all time favorite musical, but I am perfectly aware that stage and film don't work in the same way. The film hasn't yet came out and you're already condemning it. The script was written by James Lapine himself, and Sondheim approved everything and was quite pleased with the film.

      You go in with that attitude and there is no way you'll enjoy it. You are literally limiting yourself from enjoyment. Your "favorite" musical has been redone and reimagined in several different ways, this is yet another reindition.
      Nothing wrong with Jack's age, the wolf costume looks slick and fucking amazing. Meryl Streep doesn't sound "pretty good", she sounds phenomenal.

      The best thing to do is think of the stage show and the movie as two different entities. The movie is inspired by the show to tell the same story, but they are not the same. You will enjoy it that way. That's how I feel about Rent. They structure the story so differently in the movie but as it's own piece it is enjoyable. Don't ruin something because you can't accept it's changes.

    I have watched Annie, Wicked, Legally Blonde, Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray, Les Moserable and so many more musicals, and I have never seen a musical that I was thoroughly disappointed at and completely disliked until I went to watch "Into the Woods." All of the songs did not leave me humming. I did not find any of the songs catchy or clever. The plot was horrendous. Everything about the plot was random and irrelevant. The plot was not well written. The tragic part at the end of the movie was random and irrelevant to the whole story. The movie would have been a lot better if they didn't add the tragic part (not that it would be good, just better).There was no central moral or any enlightening and special moments. The characters were bland and lacked charisma as well as uniqueness. The baker's singing skill was not up to par. [SPOILER] The death of some of the characters were irrelevant and not very well written.
    I absolutely hate this musical. I feel like I have wasted 2 hours and 4 minutes watching it. I want my money back! Please do not go watch it!

      Sondheim is actually one of the most revered musicians of our time, but not for general audiences, mostly for intellectuals and diehard musical fans, and he isn't into making catchy tunes but songs with biting wit that tend to be wordy.
      You are entitled to your opinion but it seems like the entire point of the musical flew over your head. There was most certainly a point to the tragic last act that you claim had no central moral (in fact the last act is the entire point). It's obvious to almost every reviewer or critic. The musical basically shits on the traditional fairy tales and exposes how shallow they can be. It shows us what could have happened after "happily ever after" in each of the scenarios. It also directly confronts some of the darkest themes that lie underneath the surface of each of the fairy-tales but are usually ignored outside of academia. They actually made the film less dark than the musical, and even then I was surprised this managed a PG rating.

      coco teh I realized that the story was not a happily ever after kind of story. I respect it in that aspect. However, it was terrible in carrying out its theme and message. Every event that happened was very random and SUDDEN like the deaths.
      Just because Sondheim is a respectable musician, doesn't mean all of his music are favored by everyone. Die-hard musical fans? I am a die-hard musical fan; however, that doesn't mean I will like every piece of music written by Sondheim. I don't think his songs are witty. It wasn't clever to me.
      When I left the theatre, I heard MANY people complain about the movie including a Show Choir teacher.
