- Championship Wrestling from Florida - Spring 1980. Gordon Solie tries to spread fake news about the Big Cat Ernie Ladd. Solie insinuates it was a masked Ernie Ladd who caused Lyin’ Manny Fernandez to lose the Florida title to the Magnificent One. The Big Cat sets the record straight. There is no doubt it was Uvalde Slim (Dirty Rhodes) who attacked Fernandez. Here’s the proof

Ernie the Bug Cat Ladd. He was a mountain of a man with the brains to match. One of the best promos in the business. It's too bad his knees were blown out from playing pro football. Ladd is still a wrestling legend in my book.
Ladd would have a few managers during his career but he was a better talker than any of them. I have never figured out why a promoter would burden Ladd with a manager.

I remember Ladd calling both Tony Atlas and Bobo Brazil "Uncle Tom." And Chief Jay Strongbow a "drunken Indian." I don't recall any race-based slurs Ladd used against white people. As a white, I feel left out.

Solie at least gave the heels some back-talk, which is more than I can say for most announcers. The two all-time best announcers in my opinion - Dick Lane of the LA territory and Ed Whalen in Calgary - would have great arguments with the heels. This made it so much more entertaining. The love Dick Lane showed to the faces and his heated discussions with the heels made for the best interviews ever seen in wrestling. Lane was a 1950's actor who mostly did either cruel criminals or good-guy detectives. That experience trained him well for wrestling. Vince McMahon is the epitome of announcers who just stand there lifeless and ask dull questions.
It had to be painful,Ladd landing on his elbows and knees to protect the other guy,ouch...and that leg drop a la Hulk Hogan.
I wish I had seen Ernie wrestle,but I started watching when he was long retired.

Besides that brutal chop, Ladd was very careful how he wrestled him. He is one of my fav all time guys. He was great on the mic 🎤 and knew how to handle himself in and out of the ring. RIP Big Cat.

Here we go again! Gordon Solie disparages the Great Ernie Ladd. Mr. Ladd proves himself again to these peasants by lowering his standards to wrestle this simpleton Marshall. The referee was so unprepared for this match that he came from his part time job at the repair shop and didn't even put the stripes on. Meanwhile Oliver Humperdink arrived searching for a rug to tie his room together. Commissioner Gordan decides to become judge jury and executioner and pass judgement on Ernie Ladd. Manny Fernandez is a well known pool shark that cheats good people out of money. Probably one of the patron of that cantina jumped off the top rope and splashed him after being inspired by the great philanthropist Mr. Ladd.

Mr. Ladd, the big cat, was one of the first guys I was a fan of. He retired soon after I started watching (or left the territory).

More fake news. Ernie Ladd never used a taped thumb during a match. The thumb was an old football injury that never healed properly. When Ernie Ladd hit someone it was always with an open hand, not with the taped thumb. Now, if you want to look at something illegal check out Dirty Rhodes' loaded elbow pad.
Ladd was always a gentleman when he stretched those tights in the ring. That thumb was a great handicap for The Big Cat. Actually made things hold on a second Had to yell for the people in my house to shut up. Ok, I'm back. The thumb actually made things more difficult for him while be beat up people like Steamboat and that Ric Flair and anyone else that stood in his way. I watched this video several times and Ladd came off the second rope, not the top rope. How rude of Solie to make those outrageous claims while detaining Ladd from his urgent phone call.
