@@doctorprofessoroblivious1282 When I hear it, I think of US Navy aircraft carrier USS Enterprise CV-6, a ship that lost both her sisters and countless friends to the bloody depths of the Pacific during the dark years of WWII. Despite becoming the sole survivor of her class and the last Allied carrier on the Pacific, and even as depression and fear gripped the hearts and minds of the vessel and her sailors, she carried on the fight and pushed through all adversity, eventually achieving final victory. She overcame all the hatred and pain the war could throw at her and “made sail for the dawn 'til the darkness had gone.”
@@DamienDark-bx6li I would highly recommend 2019's Midway, it's a great movie that showcases the beginning of Enterprise's wartime service alongside her sisters Yorktown and Hornet. And if you want to see her voyages in their entirety, I cannot recommend enough the History Channel series Battle 360. It talks all about Enterprise, the battles she overcame, and the gallant men who sailed her.
As I searched for a bunch of covers of this song, this absolutely haunting version certainly makes it one of my favorite. A lot of covers give it sort of a triumphant feeling, which isn't at all what this song is supposed to convey. A song about the suicidality that comes from a particularly strong sense of survivor's guilt should be sad or haunting. The original is sad, and this cover is haunting, so very well done.
I heard you sing this on stream, and it made me look up the original. I really like your version, which like your stream is haunting, beautiful and relaxing.
When I hear this it makes me think of a sailor/pirate who's ship was sunken and they're now slowly sinking to the bottom, their memories of the crew and their journeys giving them comfort as they accept their fate. The sirens sing this as they carry them away and lay their body in a safe place, giving them a final goodbye...
Lyrics for y’all: Oh, I bid farewell to the port and the land And I paddle away from brave England's white sands To search for my long ago forgotten friends To search for the place I hear all sailors end As the souls of the dead fill the space of my mind I'll search without sleeping 'til peace I can find I fear not the weather, I fear not the sea I remember the fallen, do they think of me? When their bones in the ocean forever will be Plot a course to the night to a place I once knew To a place where my hope died along with my crew So I swallow my grief and face life's final test To find promise of peace and the solace of rest As the songs of the dead fill the space of my ears Their laughter like children, their beckoning cheers My heart longs to join them, sing songs of the sea I remember the fallen, do they think of me? When their bones in the ocean forever will be When at last before my ghostly shipmates I stand I shed a small tear for my home upon land Though their eyes speak of depths filled with struggle and strife Their smiles below say I don't owe them my life As the souls of the dead fill the space of my eyes And my boat listed over and tried to capsize I'm this far from drowning, this far from the sea I remember the living, do they think of me? When my bones in the ocean forever will be Now that I'm staring down at the darkest abyss I'm not sure what I want but I don't think it's this As my comrades call to stand fast and forge on I make sail for the dawn 'til the darkness has gone As the souls of the dead live for'er in my mind As I live all the years that they left me behind I'll stay on the shore but still gaze at the sea I remember the fallen and they think of me For our souls in the ocean together will be I remember the fallen and they think of me For our souls in the ocean together will be
You did so well with this. I was introduced to the song by the Longest Johns like 99% of everyone else, and it struck me how cheery the song was sung for how dark and heart wrenching the lyrics are. Ironically, I think that their cheerful uptempo version is more sad, and your version is more happily peaceful, as if one was sung from the view of the living singer and one was from the view of the submerged crew Thank you for making it, I love it
When I hear this song, I can't help but think of the people I've lost. I've seen allot of people hurting in life. We have a choice to let our grief and pain consume us, or to move forward with our little and live for a better future. The hard way out, is often the only path to lasting change. I've battled with depression and insomnia for many years. Even as I write this, I have been unable to sleep and it is now 6am. The only thing that keeps me going is Jesus and my best friends. I never thought I'd be happy, or even stable in life. But I am, and I am thankful to call this earth home. I think most people can relate to this song on some level. There's a better way out, but not everyone finds the light. Sometimes the abyss takes them, and in their grief and pain it pulls them down. And the hardest thing to watch, is when they can't or don't try to swim back up. When the singer falls into the ocean he says "i don't know what I want. But I don't think its this." And he swims. And says such a haunting line. "I remember the living, will they think of me?" He lives because those beside him pulled him out of the ocean. But it took both of them to do it. One to extend the hand, and the other to reach out and take it. Not all the time does it end like that, and he's truly lucky to make it out. The last line is so sad yet true "I'll swim towards the dawn till the darkness has gone." Sometimes that's all we can do, To sail towards the dawn. Even if it means we keep sailing after having lost many we love. Its a hard thing to think about, yet it's a song sits very close to the heart.
Oh my gosh, I was wondering if someone made a female cover of this song and your voice is so beautiful! You did this so wonderfully, the echo effects and harmonizing is so well done. Amazing
Im late. But I love this, to me it gives the song a full hit. As a ship, She wasn't just a ship, she cared for her crew, singing along with her crew, and sailing through. But when her crew dies, she has no purpose other than in the depths with them. Imagine a ship has a soul. As the ship sinks, forgotten to the end. Remembered in either mockery or respect.
Gotta be honest, I heard this version sober and couldn't understand it, but listened to it again after a pint of vodka, and understood every word of it. Sooooo relaxing
Its doesn't give the same feeling from the original but a different one I don't know how to descibe. its just feels hehehehkjkkjhgf. So much mixed emotions Its amazing. great job!
Is this available to purchase anywhere? I cannot tell you how many times I’ve recommended this song to people. I know I said this 8 months ago but truly this is one of the best pieces of music I’ve heard in my entire life.
Was listening with my fiancé and we made up a story of a siren. Sounds like it’s being sung in a cave, sometimes sounds like the siren is reminiscent of sailors she killed.
Honestly i love it so much. It hits different than the original one. Like it really hits the heart hard compared to a drucken tale from a morning sailer
The original cover feels like a sailor telling his tail, but this one feels like it’s being sung by the spirit of a ship….
that is beautiful. thank you
I had to re-listen to this after reading you comment and had the Going Merry in mind. Cried all over again.

Why haven't more people seen this?
This is what I imagine the mermaids sounded like
The original is the sailor telling a dead mans tails this is the mermaids laying the sailors to rest
I just found this and it sounds like a siren singing and scratches a itch in my brain
Best version, better than the original.
