America Catholic here. I am so hooked on Catholic Unscripted now. I'm a big history buff, and I love how you present salvation history and your indigenous history. American Catholics LOVE Sts. @friedaelizabethchorlton8654 It’s Becket’s feast day today in the broader Church. 😊 Almighty God, you gave your servant Thomas Becket boldness to confess the Name of our Savior Jesus Christ before the rulers of this world, and courage to die for this faith: Grant that we may always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us, and to suffer gladly for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. From the Anglican prayer book.
Methodist church is part of the brake away protestant church which basically same thing as Catholic church only they changed a few things they brought the protestant church into politics into imperialism and divided the Catholics and protestants in Britain and Ireland as the celtic people stayed Catholic and the anglo saxons imperialist invaders looked down on the Catholics and spread hate for them across uk and usa and the world

I was shocked when the King applauded diversity considering the situation worldwide but especially in England which is facing not only the invasion of Islamists but the 'takeover' of villages forcing British residents out; however, I was outraged and a chill ran down my spine when he spoke glowingly and proudly of a chapel now become a community space! I am not British, but I am Catholic and this was like a twisting of the knife in the backs of Catholic's to not only having taken our churches, monasteries and great cathedrals but applauding the fact they are not now sacred places of worship but community spaces. I cannot believe the King has said these things! It did however, I think, reveal one truth- people used to pray in that chapel and I cannot but be convinced that all of this has unfolded because people no longer pray. Was this a true statement of the King's beliefs or is he a mere puppet? Time will tell!

Not until Gavin did I want to pray for the UK in this way. I personally didn’t understand CoE and the roots with Henry VIII. I simply couldn’t understand why anyone would want to be in a Church associated with Henry VIII. But now I’m even more sad and outraged by what happened to Catholics and our cathedrals. It seems like with pomp and circumstance, and a veneer of respectability, it all seemed acceptable… until now. Now we can talk about what happened in history because the UK is crumbling. @ Tx… it may not be very traditional then: sorry to sound cynical, but a bit of virtue-signalling perhaps. I have an early Victorian book by CofE Bishop Wordsworth, which similarly laments the death of Thomas More … with a bit more common sense, More could have gone on the be a brilliant and long lived Chancellor, an ornament of the CofE …
@AlasPoorEngland You make an interesting point. With a bit more common sense on Henry VIII's part, Thomas More could have had the brilliant earthly career you describe and not ended up with his head on a spike on a bridge. It throws into even sharper relief the sacrifice Thomas made in giving up earthly riches and honor for the sake of his faith, dying as the King's good servant, but God's first. 'What doth it profit a man, to gain the whole world and lose his soul?' Now, at the distance of nearly five hundred years, Henry is seen as egotistical and perhaps sexist. He could have saved so many lives by recognizing his daughter Mary as his heir once it was evident that she would have no surviving brothers, and being faithful to his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. If he had gone that route, it's entirely possible that Mary, who was only 19 at the time of More's execution, might have had a much better chance of marrying young enough, producing heirs of her own, and perpetuating the Tudor bloodline. Additionally, without the psychological damage Henry did to Mary over his obsession with a male heir, Mary could have gone on to be a successful and fondly remembered queen. There was recent precedent at that time, and even in the same family; Mary's grandmother (Catherine's mother), Isabel I of Castile, had demonstrated that a woman could indeed be a successful ruler.
If you are watching this Charles, would you rather your short legacy be that of a weak, woke, traitor or a great King who stood up for his people and Christian beliefs? Yes, it would rock the boat and break the status quo but that is what's required of you!
@ I wonder about the truthfulness of the portrayal. We all know, or should, of the poetic license taken by films. I watched with a grain of salt. What were they NOT telling about him. I keep my head on a swivel. Thankfully grounded in faith. Otherwise, it would spin off into the universe! 😉😁
Both St Thomas a Becket and St Thomas More stood for fidelity and loyalty. Catholic fidelity and loyalty. What would they think now? The utter disaster that was and is the "reformation", (that didn't achieve anything but division) is testament to everything that is wrong with it. Unity = God, Division = The Devil.
Isn´t it a marvel tha tagain there are relics of St. Thomas in Canterbury? Not not in the cathedral, but the small Catholic parish church has a finger bone and a piece of his robe. Both had been given to other churches before Henry VIII's rampage, if I remember correctly in Italy. The Catholic parish currentliy is seeking funding to create an updated Shrine so that it can become an attractive liturgical space for pilgrims.Dr. Ashenden, do not tire of strengthening your brothers and sisters in their faith! Heiliger Thomas, bitte für uns!
Leaving aside the convention that a wife adopts the surname of her husband, the King is a direct, lineal, descendant from King Henry VII, through King Henry VIII’s sister, Queen Margaret of Scotland, so, is by Royal descent very much a Tudor, even though his female ancestors, through whom the Crown descends to him, were married to Stuarts, Hanoverians, Dutchmen and others. The names of these husbands mean nothing in terms of the line of succession.
In Wolf Hall, Hillary Mantel went after Thomas More, doing her utmost to darken his character and break/undermine the powerful narrative in A Man for All Seasons. Naturally all the literary establishment, the BBC and the "right thinking" people loved her book. They're still trying to do to More what Henry VIII did to Beckett.
An Irish poet and singer; BRENDAN BEHAN POEM: "Don't speak of your Protestant minister, Nor of his church without meaning or faith, For the foundation stone of his temple, Was the bollocks of Henry VIII"
Dr Ashenden your erudite words are excellent and very welcome. I am astounded that so many intelligent highly educated Protestant clergymen cannot see how artificial is the C of E and are yet prepared to follow the dictats of that psychopathic and megalomaniac Henry 8.
I AM an anarchist. Many of us are. The ceremonial Monarchy exists to reinforce a political identity, just as the Papacy reinforces a spiritual identity. Political identities are inherently disordered and idolatrous. Patriotism is a sin. Change my mind.
I needed to hear this ❤🙏❤️ very timely. Please, when you have time , examine the Pilgrimage of Graces. A lost opportunity for the faithful, they trusted Henry VIII -A fatal error. May they all rest in peace. ❤🙏
Church Vs State.........I think the focus should be on our own Captain, and his legitimacy before we take the field 2 score any goals against the State.....
Very interesting, my family are huguenots french protestants refused to change their religion because a king told them to. Some were persecuted tortured, burned at the stake as were witches and murdered. Some escaped to russia, germany, some stayed in france but eventually came to uk in the 1700s. We are still huguenots
Thank you for calling out our collective amnesia ... over our collective Catholic Amnesia! You elegantly and economically articulate everything that l tentatively muse about in my Church's Narthex, over a cup of rosy lee, the tiny drops of data being a stronger more bitter brew than stewed tea, alas. l am a nondescript a fanatic history buff, but you have the social proof, and the receipts, l'm just an 'old widow of the Parish', who is fervently praying specifically that we all start to make sense of our collective somnambulism. These scripted edited calls to (spiritual) arms of yours, are what you were born for imho, they have a timeless legacy. They are heirloom mustard seeds. God bless your hindsight, insight and foresight.
Mark never left the Faith, but he does have a heartbreaking story. 1. 'Interview with Mark Lambert' at 'Choose Agape', 2 years ago. 2. 'Catholic Unscripted at the Catholic Identity Conference 2024 - Christ is King!' at 'Catholic Unscripted', 2 months ago.
If Becket was so infused with the power of the Holy Spirit as I believe he was then what does that say about Henry who not only destroyed where his body laid but then scattered his bones across the land , only an evil person would do such a thing.
Henry's behaviour after his murderous musings is at least admirable. Accepting responsibility for the terrible crime of removing a holy man from the earth, rare and valuable. How unthinkable that a Minister of the Crown, the Monarch or any representative of the ruling faction could humble him/herself and publicly beseech the forgiveness and mercy of Our Lord God? Ours bow, not to God. There are many points, they feel, that the Blessed Trinity got wrong and would do well to heed their advice, with a spoilt infant ego bloated as Caligula and Nero. How they build towers against God ...
Charles III descends from the Stuart king James VI and I, who was the great grandson of Henry VIII's sister Margaret who married James IV King of Scots. The Stuarts also descended from Kings of England (Saxon, Norman and Plantagenet) through various earlier marriages, but it was being a great great grandson of Henry VII that James VI and I's claim depended on.
Don’t back down, Gavin. I still can’t believe what’s happening in your country. With Trumps election, I believe we’ve been given a reprieve in the US, even though I’m not sure we deserve it. May God bless you.
Mary - a thoughtful comment! Yes, it does feel like a reprieve. Time to understand and act on Dr Ashenden’s warnings which fall like rain in the desert.
@barbaracleverly9058 because he hates canadians . What good he will bring to Canada. Remember when he wanted to destroy the milk farmers in Canada. He says he wants to make Canada an American state. He could not even take care of Puerto Rico. He said it was because it was an island, but the Spanish army was there already taking care of the territories they had in the while he was throwing paper towels . And he could send help to Marroco that was farther. If they could not take care of a tyne island . How would they take care of a territory bigger than theirs
That was very enlightening, saw a film some years ago but would love to see it again. It would be helpful if you gave us a few listings of films, books etc , to further efucate oursrlves. I was educated by the Mercy Sisters and we had a few classmates from the C of Ireland who the Nuns fawned over. It gave me a skewed view of my own Catholic religion. These girls were nice but still I found it odd these religions were thought superior, following the money perhaps?. 😮😊
Thank you very much for the video today. I am a little confused because I'm not sure if you're Catholic or if you are actually Church of England and there is a difference. I say that also because I'm actually English Catholic by way of My mother, by way of her mother who was from England and one of a family of 11 with 9 girls and two boys all born in England except her and one or two others of the younger ones. So if somebody could clear that up, that would be helpful. I agree The King's speech was America lukewarm which you can understand that if you understand what America is done to the world with these idiotic abstractions that when taken to their logical extreme result in chaos& the unmooring of body, mind & soul . As regards Muhammad being a threat, I must say you then are speaking of England, not America. As I was riding my bike to the bus stop, I was thinking how in America because it's so vast we have pockets of different people's and that is our diversity which isn't really diversity as you can see. So in Utah we have a majority Mormon and in New Mexico we have a majority Catholic and in Michigan apparently we have the vast majority of Mohammeds. I do not believe they are a threat in America. I believe in America we can govern as Andalusia did wherein the power base allowed for all religions to function as they wished. I know it's more difficult in England and I don't think the English should have ever joined the EU and it should netver have allowed this rampant migration-- which I will say was induced by the wars that America spearheaded but that England jumped on the bandwagon and helped implement. But back to England, I think that if you can get together some very bright people from many disciplines in a room where they can think about how can we govern like Andalusia where as a Christian Nation we are in the majority and we do hold the reins of power but we will allow and we do allow all the different religions and ethnic groups to live and to flourish. I know that itself is an abstraction but you can flesh it out by looking at what occurred for 800 years in the area we now call Spain which included Portugal when Islam reigned as the majority religion but did not disallow other religions In all events, I see this is the only way you can maintain yourself as a democratic country and maintain Christianity as it's been practiced while allowing other faiths to practice their religion although not their law. I gather Sharia law is not just done within the Muslim area but it is impinging on English law and that needs to be eliminated. To my knowledge we do not have Sharia law in America. The Mormons themselves are polygamist but it is disallowed Good luck
You are so knowledgeable and come across as such a Christian who truly believes in Jesus! But, the Catholic Pope’s message against Israel needs to be addressed and I do hope you will tackle it. I have also heard that the Pope had a Nativity Scene, where the Baby Jesus was lying on a Keffiyeh - Jesus was and always will be a Jew!
Henry VIII's elder sister was married to the King of Scotland. Mary Queen of Scots was her granddaughter and James her great grandson. Also, I believe the Emperor at the time of Jesus was Tiberius, not Augustus.
We have the Crown Prosecution Service which decides whom to take up in law. Appointed by the government. For example they have refused Mrs Assad residency here, on account of her husband even though she is of the country and sick also.
There is a relic of St Thomas of Canterbury in Canterbury. Part of the marble shrine was found in the river in Canterbury. The lands, buildings and property of the friaries, monasteries and abbeys were legally given with individual deeds by individuals. By stealing these and destroying these buildings the Crown acted illegally and immoraly. Yes Henry destroyed to maintain power but after all the death, havoc and deep wound to the soul of Britain...this is still playing out today.
Lest we be confused, what is moral may be illegal, and what is legal may be immoral. There are representatives of the "state" who will assert that what is legal has priority over conflicting moral. Moral derived from what God has made known to us through Jesus Christ should have priority over law devised from the imagination of man. Jesus did not deny or stop his teachings to satisfy the eminence of Rome, "state," nor that of the Sanhedrin. Gavin's equation of truth and the primacy of St. Peter bares examination, though, for dulling the clarity between what is moral and what is legal, in this case, between what is moral and what is canonical. How many are aware that out of eighty-five Church Fathers, forty-five thought "rock" meant the faith expressed by St. Peter, and only seventeen thought it meant St. Peter himself? Following Pope Pius IV, scripture should be interpreted according to the unanimous consent of the Church Fathers. 🤔
A more articulate and honest presentation of our mission as Catholics cannot be imagined. God bless you, Dr. Ashenden!
You are exceptional in a deeply troubled world. I find your words very affecting. My faith is strengthened. God bless you ✝️🙏🇬🇧

Brilliant as usual Dr Gavin...Dublin
Amighty God please enable millions to listern to these videos.
Great reflection, thank you. Regarding truth, I don’t think any church at the moment is on very sure ground.
I saw the most excellent movie with Peter O'Toole playing King Henry the Second. Richard Burton as Thomas Beckett.
Just finished that tonight.
Yes I remember it but I need to see it again, soon I hope. 😊
I remember it also. Recently on UA-cam. Moving story of faith, but a sad one of lost friendship
@@rosemary599Wasn’t the film based on the play by Anouilh? A fairly liberal interpretation, but impressive in parts!
God is the truth and the spirit of one's ancestors. Love the former and honour the latter and all will be well.
Please can you do a video discussing the Glasgow jubilee cross débâcle? ❤

"I came to testify to the truth." Pilate: "What is truth?"
It is refreshing to see English catholics still exist. Hopefully the Mountbatten reign ends soon and you can finally be free of the protestant yoke

BRENDAN BEHAN POEM:
"Don't speak of your Protestant minister,
Nor of his church without meaning or faith,
For the foundation stone of his temple,
Was the bollocks of Henry VIII"
Good one. Excuse me for being a pedantic poet but It's strange he didn't cut out the 'of' in the second line - it would scan better!
😁 … ✨🙏🏼✨
Dr Ashenden your erudite words are excellent and very welcome. I am astounded that so many intelligent highly educated Protestant clergymen cannot see how artificial is the C of E and are yet prepared to follow the dictats of that psychopathic and megalomaniac Henry 8.
Top work.
It’s good poetry but not entirely good history. Mary 1, Henry’s daughter, Bloody Mary, is why England stayed Protestant.

We have more in common with anarchist's than we might think.

Does anyone know where to listen to Mark Lambert’s conversion story? I’ve heard it’s one of the most heart wrenching stories of conversion.
Mark never left the Faith, but he does have a heartbreaking story.

If Becket was so infused with the power of the Holy Spirit as I believe he was then what does that say about Henry who not only destroyed where his body laid but then scattered his bones across the land , only an evil person would do such a thing.
Fear of a greater man than himself "God" prompted him to desecrate his resting place. The madness of the monarchy.😮
Thank you have you heard of replacement migration and to add why arnt the churches saying whats happening
I was thinking….. Henry 8 did leave a dynasty….. modern day Britain is Henry 8’s baby. 500 years of greed, blood, and famine.
Who were William and Benedict? What did they have to do with Beckett?
They were monks at Canterbury Cathedral tasked with making a record of the claims for miraculous healing at the tomb of St Thomas after prayer.

Trump?

Trump. Yes. What are you questioning? And why?
@barbaracleverly9058 yes . If USA leaves NATtio

I agree The King's speech was America lukewarm which you can understand that if you understand what America is done to the world with these idiotic abstractions that when taken to their logical extreme result in chaos& the unmooring of body, mind & soul
. I know it's more difficult in England and I don't think the
English should have ever joined the EU and it should netver have allowed this rampant migration-- which I will say was induced by the wars that America spearheaded but that England jumped on the bandwagon and helped implement. But back to England, I think that if you can get together some very bright people from many disciplines in a room where they can think about how can we govern like Andalusia where as a Christian Nation we are in the majority and we do hold the reins of power but we will allow and we do allow all the different religions and ethnic groups to live and to flourish.
I know that itself is an abstraction but you can flesh it out by looking at what occurred for 800 years in the area we now call Spain which included Portugal when Islam reigned as the majority religion but did not disallow other religions
In all events, I see this is the only way you can maintain yourself as a democratic country and maintain Christianity as it's been practiced while allowing other faiths to practice their religion although not their law. I gather Sharia law is not just done within the Muslim area but it is impinging on English law and that needs to be eliminated. To my knowledge we do not have Sharia law in America. The Mormons themselves are polygamist but it is disallowed
Good luck
I was received into the Carholic Church in 2019

Are you committing treason if we speak like this in England? American here!.
I think truth is of a higher order than the concept of treason. But it would be interesting to hear your question being thrashed out.
What does the Talmud say about equality and truth and justice?
