I’m not even half way through yet, but I just wanna say that it says a lot about you as a person and a mother that your kids are so knowledgeable and helpful ❤. It’s so sweet that everyone pitches in and knows the routine. The silver lining to all the health issues the animals are dealing with is that you and the kids are learning first hand knowledge that you will never forget and will help you to save animals in the future.

People don't realize grain isn't even required, it's a concentrate ration. It's given in small amounts because of this. High quality forage (grass, plants, and dry matter ie hay) should be the primary food. Grains supplements forage to help maintain weight or growth when forage isn't top notch, or animals are being pushed by weather (winter), producing milk, pregnancy, breeding, or growing. The grain isn't relevant to body mass like you'd expect for dogs or cats.

  • @kellystephens077

BLOAT TIP: Maybe you could try giving the goats free-choice baking soda in a hanging feeder that's off the ground in a covered area, away from the elements. You can purchase baking soda in bulk 3-5 lb. bags.
    Mineral blocks?
If ruminant animals don't have enough to forage or graze on their rumen(stomachs) will become empty and if that happens they will start producing excess gas which causes them to bloat.

  • @lisarobinson2155

Speak with your vet. You should be able to get a bottle of Thiamine from your vet to have on hand. It's much easier than trying to get an adequate amount of Thiamine in to the animal via vitamin B complex. Also speak with your vet about prescribing you penicillin. That is something every farmer needs to have on hand .

Homesteading has a lot of heartache attached to it, just the way it works. We make mistakes and when we know better, we do better, but even when we do everything right, things are often out of our control. I've raised rare breed heritage chickens for 20 years and at times, there is as much guilt attached to it as there is raising children. Mine generally live to ripe old ages, the oldest so far going on 15 years old, but there are the issues you just don't expect and books do not tell you. I'm glad Maxie is getting better, sorry you lost the doe. ~Cynthia

Good morning 🌄 So sorry you've had such a rough time. All in a learning lesson. Some of the comments are ruthless and unwarranted. You've had a lot of experience with farm animals and LGDs. Before my husband passed he'd say 'Aint nothing EASY about living on a farm' oh so true. If these people don't APPROVE of your little farm life, they should go somewhere else.. EVERY farm show says the exact same thing to NEGATIVE VIEWERS. DON'T WATCH. I wonder where they think our food comes from? Your food is the healthiest when your harvest EVERYTHING yourself.. Meat most of all..Keep up the GREAT work. Enjoy your life. 🐷🐽🐮🐱🐕🐰🎄🎅

Sorry about the duck. I was chasing a fox running off with one of my roosters at 1 in the morning this past week. It dropped him and I got him back safe. That's what happens when you feel sorry and let the dog in on a cold night. I made her a new coat, she'll be staying out now.

You need to move on down here to South Carolina like Jess & Miah from Roots & Refuge Farm. Seldomly does it get real cold here and people pray for snow...NOT ME, I LIKE HEAT😊. The summers can be a beast if you can't take humidity though. You are doing great. Young homesteads take time.

So sorry about the loss of your doe. Over feeding/eating is a huge issue with goats, I agree its better to slightly under feed than over feed! We don't raise meat goats so I don't know how different their requirements are but when our does are not in milk we just feed a maintenance ration plus 24/7 hay of course and access to loose minerals. The eating of bark could be a copper deficiency or so I have heard.
I get comments sometimes that are rude, people get very comfortable being jerks while behind a keyboard, they say things they wouldn't dare say otherwise. My opinion is I will always take into consideration honest suggestions, but rude and disrespectful comments get removed , if it continues the person gets banned.
I'm glad the pup is on the mend and you found a vet that saw him quickly! Stay warm, I get chilled just watching your videos lol😁🤣.

Don't you use preventive collars for ticks ?
    They work 6 /8 months .
If you don't you should check them all twice a day and pull ticks off .
A wire fence will not stop bulls for long ..
Cut down the trees with hazardes fruit or bark , make proper fences out of them .
Trees you can't or don't want to cut down , make a chickenwire fence around so the bark can't be eaten .
And polio can be preventend with yearly vaccinations .
What do you do to prevent your animals getting sick ?

Sending LOTS of love, hugs, and prayers your way.

Im.sorry about Peaches. Thiamine is made in the rumen and if that is compromised, thiamine productions slows or stops and polio can happen. With her being bloated, most likely started there. Giving the b complex is good anytime they are not feeling well. ..again..very sorry you lost her. You did everything you could for her, you need to know that ❤

With everything happening it kinda seemed like something weird was going on. But that’s just life on a farm. You’ve learned more in this time to be better equipped for the future.

If ever a channel was a poster child for NOT entering into homesteading, this one is it. You have endured a total storm of bad luck. I farm but not animals because of this very reason. I just won’t deal even with chickens. I have total respect for you and those of you who want to live like this but it is not for me and my kids. You are also a poster child for setting up veterinary care in your area well before ever getting your first farm animal. I get it that you have just the one vet who does not respond and who does not show up, but that would be the reason I would forego farm animals. Glad the dog is doing better and I am sorry you lost the goat. I love farming for our food but I would hate having to wake up to horrendous crises every single day the way y’all do. Your kids are so used to it that they know what you mean when you holler “Grab the B-12 and a syringe”; it’s a lot. A LOT.
