I agree, it is great to see such a talented musician embrace history so dearly as McKennitt. The passion she holds for the past shows in her remarkable music.
This whole album was inspired by her research regarding the Silk Road, which extends from Europe through Egypt, Somalia, the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia,Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Java-Indonesia, and Vietnam until it reaches China. It's quite inspiring that she studied so many various cultures, and it's only natural that she came up with such a masterpiece. She is a unique musician, who puts her heart and soul into every note she writes...
Her music does go deep and touching soothing and healing the soul when we are confronted with suffering, helping me to endure and carry on, I have turned to it again and again. I don't know why but in the depression and despair as I watch my wife declining every day is a monotonous routing of total care. God has given her a gift and she is making good use of it to accomplish his purpose. God bless her.
Loreena brings forth the music from ancient times and it's beauty to the present. From a time when there were great civilizations that lived differently and in tune with Creation. If we are thrust backward and we have no more modern convienences we will still have music. She was given the gift of storing it for us from ancient memories.
Love how it starts really humble and then builds slowly to a dramatic ending, almost in the style of Ravel's Bolero. Almost like how the spring season starts with subtle beginnings (longer days and swelling buds) but ends with an orgy of leaves and blooms.
Leave, blooms, flowers and an orgy of actual orgies as animals, and humans mate in their seasons. That break at 5:14 truly is orgiastic, wild and beautiful.
she is not only beautiful, but here voice is that of an angel. and her music really goes down deep and touches the soul and my celtic blood. she's truly a gift from god. truly a blessing to music.
'Verily, my grief for my Caesar and his unexpected death have touched my inmost soul, and the wound has pierced to the profoundest depths of my being. All previous misfortunes compared with this insatiable calamity I count literally as a single small drop compared with this Atlantic Ocean, this turbulent Adriatic Sea of trouble: they were, methinks, but preludes to this, mere smoke and heat to forewarn me of this fiery furnace and indescribable blaze; the small daily sparks foretold this terrible conflagration. Oh! thou fire which, though unfed, dost reduce my heart to ashes! Thou burnest and art ever kept alight in secret, yet dost not consume. Though thou scorchest my heart thou givest me the outward semblance of being unburnt, though thy fingers of fire have gripped me even to the marrow of my bones, and to the dividing of my soul! However, I see that I have let my feelings carry me away from my subject, but the mention of my Caesar and my grief for him have instilled devastating sorrow into me.' Anna🌹weeping her Nicephorus, from the Preface to the Alexiad
the title of the song is greek.... "kecharitomene" is how we call the Holy Mother and it means "full of grace" :) i think that before Loreena McKennitt wrote the entire album, she travelled the Meditereanian and she was impressed by Greek coulture and history...
It is a beautiful piece of music and I am intrigued by the title "Kecharitomene". It is a unique name given to the Virgin Mary by the angel Gabriel. It is derived from the original Greek manuscript of the Gospel of St. Luke. Chaire kecharitomene. Translated: "Hail, Full of Grace." In Latin, following the venerable St. Jerome's translation known as the Vulgate, it is "Ave, gratia plena". The word that Luke uses--κεχαριτωμένη, kecharitomene--appears to have been crafted out of thin air, appearing into the Greek vocabulary as unexpectedly as the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and as silently as the Word became Flesh. It was the word for the moment. The word is used nowhere else in the Scriptures or in secular Greek literature. The technical name for such a novel, unique word is hapax legomenon. Hapax legomenon--which comes to us from Greek--means "expressed once."
!!!! This is literally the first song I've ever really loved. It led me to so much other music that I am so grateful for. Thank you! Loreena McKennit is my favorite artist too :D She's amazing. Want to learn how to play the harp.....
I have been a long time fan of Loreena's. Her music has taken me on many journeys to my soul. But my comment is directed more to thanking you for the history. 5 stars for the history and if I could, 5 more for the music.
Another incredible beautiful, breathtaking moment to listen. Loreena is by far the most talented and gifted to be able to create a period so long ago in her music today...
There is something so primal, so elemental to her music, that your soul instinctively knows its origins. The souls yearns for release into the purity of her music, to soar among the notes, to touch the very heart of it, and never return to the mortal world!
I just learned this violin part! A beautiful song. I had to tune it a quarter tone higher to play along with the album's intonation. Is that how middle eastern music is played? I love the sound.
@Amazonwarrior777 i know what u mean i've 22 years without knowing who she was and a friend gave me her cd the book of secrets when i was going through the worst time ever, her music healed me!!! i've been a huge fan for a year now!! wish i could meet her someday to thank her for her music, she's amazing!!
I play this every year at Imbolc as I hold a sacred candlelight ceremony to consecrate my resolutions for the coming year (I celebrate the new year at sunset on February 1).
El cd de la musa, es hermosisimo, lo compre estos dias y me gusto bastante......recomendado, asi mismo Enya tambien me gusta mucho, pero Loreena juega con una mezcla de culturas y es lo que tanto me gusta.....en fin, divina musica. Maha.

I like 5:11 through to the end the most

Come on Loreena! Play the BofA Pavillion in Boston. PLEASE!!!!!
this music is like traveling..
entre Moyen-Âge et a Arabian j'aime beaucoup 🙂
Heh, I love this song. Not just because of its title.... :)
does this piece of music is part of the movie kingdom of heaven? it seems very close to this music.
I've heard this in a movie or a TV show before. Can anyone tell me where this has been used in pop culture?
+Kirk Bienvenu It hasn't
+Kirk Bienvenu I noticed that it's very similar to the soundtrack of Kingdom of Heaven in parts...
'kecharitomene' actually means 'the most gracefull of them all' in ancient greek and the Mother of God is reffered this way...it is a very very special word...
Does anyone know which style this song is? Turkish, Arabic, Israeli, Persian, Egyptian etc? I just can't determine precisely.
+Gerdes Olivier It's Persian
Thanks Adam!
+Gerdes Olivier . This is typical Levantine music. Or you may consider it Ottoman, as traces of this style would always be found in the music of the countries that were part of the Ottoman Empire, that is Turkey, the Arab Levant ( Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Palestine), and Greece.
+Gerdes Olivier And we shouldn't forget the Byzantine influences that preceded the Ottoman Empire in space and in time.
It's Byzantine, which influenced somewhat the later Turkish one. The title is Greek as well.
Eleven years later...
Κάπου το έχω ακούσει, αν δεν κάνω λάθος στο Mega, σε κάποιο τρέιλερ... αλλά δε θυμάμαι αν ήταν σε εκπομπή...
love this piece..Ty Loreena
I wonder if LM ever looks herself up on UA-cam...
Kecharitomene is used in the New Testament towards Maria when visited by the Angel Gabriel. It means " the one who is full of God inside"!
KarlBonner1982 I could not agree more...

That is freaky. I can't believe it. I think I am going to be sick.
