    This is probably the easiest soap making tutorial I've seen yet. Question, could lemon juice or another method be used instead of citric acid because most citric acid is made from black mold, so I really wouldn't want to use that?

    • @NewEnglandHomebody
      @NewEnglandHomebody  8 місяців тому +19

      The citric acid is completely optional!! 😊 The soap will be amazing with or without it but I do include it in many of our soaps because when citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap. A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water. These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap. A chelator binds to these metals so that they can't bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won't react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases. Thank you for the question!

    Hi! I just watched the video and is very amazed at how easy it is to make your own soap. But I do have a question. In the video it states to leave it for 24-48 hours(?) Does this mean that we have to put it on the freezer? To let it cool?

    • @NewEnglandHomebody

      @@Hello-z4b9z No, I just leave it at room temperature for the first 24 hours or until they are firm, then I remove the soap from the forms. After that, I let them cure for 6 weeks in a dry cool place. Hope this helps! Thank you for watching!

    Hola ! Soy de Lima, PERÚ y me acabo de suscribir porque me encantó tu receta de JABON DE ACEITE DE COCO con ACIDO CITRICO, sé que este ingrediente aporta mucho al jabón. Tengo un ligero problema, no sé usar la calculadora y quiero hacer el doble de tu receta, mejor dicho 1 KILO de ACEITE DE COCO. Crees que sólo pueda doblar tu receta y listo ??
    Quedo atenta y muy agradecida esperando tu respuesta. Un gran abrazo 😘🍀

      @@milagrosescurra8189 Thank you for your comment. I use an online soap calculator called lyecalc.com. For 1000 grams or 1 kilo of coconut oil I would use this recipe:
      380 g Water
      144 g 100% Purity NaOH
      20 g citric acid
      1,000 g Coconut Oil - All Grades except Virgin
      Keep in mind virgin coconut oil will have a different lye amount. This recipe also has a 20% superfat. And was created using an online soap calculator. Hope this helps, and again please see my description section of my soap making video for more information!
      Ps. I will make a video on how to use an online soap calculator soon!

    Cure the soap 3 or 4 months before using it? What does that mean. You can use the soap instantly?

    • @NewEnglandHomebody
      @NewEnglandHomebody  7 місяців тому +3

      Usually cold process soap needs to cure for about 4-6 weeks before you can use it. I cure this perticular soap for 10 weeks because coconut oil soap tends to be very cleansing. The soap needs this 'cure' time to turn all of the lye into soap. You cure soap to make sure no lye remains in the soap, plus the lather improves over time!
      Lye is a critical ingredient in the soap-making process; It reacts with oils during the saponification process to create soap and glycerin, changing the liquid oils into a solid soap bar. In the recipe I added extra coconut oil, in a process called 'superfatting' to make sure no lye remains in the final product.

    What it means by curing the soap for 10 weeks?

    • @NewEnglandHomebody
      @NewEnglandHomebody  Місяць тому

      @@johnduhlian12. I leave mine to cure for at least 6 weeks or more, during this time I leave my cut soap bars in a cool dark room, during this time the excess water evaporates from the soap, causing it to lose weight, shrink, and harden. The longer a soap cures, the more water evaporates, resulting in a denser, harder, and longer lasting bar. Hope this helps!!

    20% super fat and 25% water?

    • @NewEnglandHomebody
      @NewEnglandHomebody  8 місяців тому

      I was originally going for 20% superfat, but I put in 10g of citric acid. This increased the superfat a bit because 10g of citric acid neutralizes about 6g of lye. This made the superset a bit higher than 20% but not quite 25%
