This is probably the easiest soap making tutorial I've seen yet. Question, could lemon juice or another method be used instead of citric acid because most citric acid is made from black mold, so I really wouldn't want to use that?
The citric acid is completely optional!! 😊 The soap will be amazing with or without it but I do include it in many of our soaps because when citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap. A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water. These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap. A chelator binds to these metals so that they can't bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won't react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases. Thank you for the question!
@@NewEnglandHomebody Is there another alternative to the citric acid that you could recommend? I would like to include it, but knowing about the black mold just throws me off 😳
Hi! I just watched the video and is very amazed at how easy it is to make your own soap. But I do have a question. In the video it states to leave it for 24-48 hours(?) Does this mean that we have to put it on the freezer? To let it cool?
@@Hello-z4b9z No, I just leave it at room temperature for the first 24 hours or until they are firm, then I remove the soap from the forms. After that, I let them cure for 6 weeks in a dry cool place. Hope this helps! Thank you for watching!

@@milagrosescurra8189 Thank you for your comment. I use an online soap calculator called lyecalc.com. This recipe also has a 20% superfat. And was created using an online soap calculator. Hope this helps, and again please see my description section of my soap making video for more information! Ps. Hi, I've tried 3 times now, with 127g of distilled water and 73g of lye, I can't quite get all the lye crystals ot fully dissolve, any idea what I might be doing wrong? How long stirring should it take to dissolve all of the lye. I mixed in a glass jug would that cause the problem?
@@leeendley8009 that is strange, I’m sorry you are having trouble. The best advice I can give it is to check the lye. I would recommend using 100% lye and stirring constantly until it dissolves. Also use filtered water! How this helps. Be sure to read the description in my videos carefully for other notes and tips
Usually cold process soap needs to cure for about 4-6 weeks before you can use it. I cure this perticular soap for 10 weeks because coconut oil soap tends to be very cleansing. The soap needs this 'cure' time to turn all of the lye into soap. You cure soap to make sure no lye remains in the soap, plus the lather improves over time! Lye is a critical ingredient in the soap-making process; It reacts with oils during the saponification process to create soap and glycerin, changing the liquid oils into a solid soap bar. In the recipe I added extra coconut oil, in a process called 'superfatting' to make sure no lye remains in the final product.
Mam one side you said to cool down lye solution Other side to make soap when lye and oil temprature both at 38 digre Centigrade Please verify the mater
@@rammurtigupta5999 sorry for the confusion! I don’t follow a specific temperature, I just try and get the lye solution and oils very close in temperature (within 20 degrees of each other) before I mix them. This helps with the emulsification go smoother! Thank you for watching!
@@johnduhlian12. I leave mine to cure for at least 6 weeks or more, during this time I leave my cut soap bars in a cool dark room, during this time the excess water evaporates from the soap, causing it to lose weight, shrink, and harden. The longer a soap cures, the more water evaporates, resulting in a denser, harder, and longer lasting bar. Hope this helps!!

@@veenakailasam1307 No, lye is a critical ingredient in the soap-making process. I was originally going for 20% superfat, but I put in 10g of citric acid. This increased the superfat a bit because 10g of citric acid neutralizes about 6g of lye. This made the superset a bit higher than 20% but not quite 25%
