That co-worker had no authority unless he was the immediate supervisor to search him or have him searched. All the lawyer has to do is get their code of conduct handbook. If they don't have one then the suspect's civil rights have been violated and he can sue on a federal level.

When the police return, the box is in a drawer and hasn't been opened. The police asks him to open it so they can confirm the contents. The coworker assures them again that he knows it's the missing item, but he opens it. Afterward, the police tell the coworker that the fully "documented" the report to protect their liability. Sounds like they were helping the coworker cover up his ridiculous story.

The officer who seems to have taken the lead in this appears to have a personal relationship with someone in the shop, calling him "my boy" as a term of endearment and relationship. It doesn't appear that the police did any investigation before arresting. That's a violation of the arrestee's 4th amendment rights for sure. It's an illegal arrest.
