I like the way he kept the wing strut attached to the wing and let it fall to act as a stand until he could secure it. I've seen others leave it attached to the frame, necessitating a stand or another person to hold the wing up. Smart move. I want one!
Brilliant way of one-manning the struts. I'd be concerned about some dirt in the tubes though... maybe a small blanket or even a frisbee or plastic bowl on the ground. That last look at the camera when you finished and brushed your hands was AWESOME!
Thanks for your comments. The principal in this video is actually my friend. Those of us who are privileged to know Beauford, appreciate that closing gesture even more. As for dirt in the tubes.... the environment where this Firefly is quartered has very thick grass and sandy soil. Not much is going to stick in the lift strut tubes and any miniscule amount that might, would shake loose and drop out taxing to take the numbers.
I swear, when I heard "Yakety Sax" I expected the video to end with a crash. I'm glad it didn't, though! Nice demonstration of both assembly and take-down! I'd like to add something like that to a homebuild one of these days. Thanks for the video!
I used to own a Kolb Twin. I wish i had purchased a single seat Kolb instead. Great film. Thanks. I kinda wish it had been a little slower play so I could have seen more what you did.
What a beautiful plane! And a great choice of music for the video! I'd like to know how you got that plane in that trailer. Would I be correct if I said you used a come-a-long or a winch? I owned a Twinstar awhile back and I needed my son to help me get it on a trailer.
A winch is used. However, I have a FS II, which is about 100#s heavier than this Firefly, and with lowering the trailer, I can roll it inside with not much effort.
Wonder just how hard it is to make that 254 lb - or 278 lb with the chute. (and we KNOW that some DAR's won't take your 16lb "soft chute" as part of that additional 24 lbs. ) It sure would be hell to get one finished and find that you just can't add the landing gear - too much weight! Flown GA planes - Experimental Amateur Built, (for over 30 years) but now want a plane I can "assemble" - preflight - get in - and go flying! No more paperwork, no more FAA, no more anything. Am I making my point??
Bob Taylor If you mean Firestarter II, the process is close to the same. Wings are a little more difficult due to size and weight. Some use support stands. Don't know about Flight star II.
The owner chose to participate in the conversion program in 2006/2007 and made this Firefly an Experimental Light Sport (ELSA). All Fireflys do not necessarily qualify as Ultralight.
