    being hard of hearing and have 23 hrs in a taylorcraft I stopped my flying lesson in the mid 1990's. Now that this new sports flying is making it way into the air I can renew my quest to fly again. I done some research and it seems your plane is fitted for my needs. Equip to take a parachute, floats have me sold as well as folding wings. I live in Oregon but planned on moving to FL and the thoughts of island hopping sounds fun to me. Thanks for this video. I now need to look for a flying school to get me certified in flying these ultralights.

I suggest that you share your flying experience, your first flight, your experience and especially how does this particular ultralight differ from others.. for example the folding wing is that a standard feature of the firefly or the Kolb, or any ultralight can have that feature. Hey there.
    Thanks for the update, you did answer a LOT of the questions I had for you, EXCEPT:
    1. Fuel consumption at various power settings (50%, 65%/75%) per hour.
    2. Oil used; ie, does it eat more oil than you expected?
    3. How much did it cost BEFORE you made your adaptations?
    4. Are there STOCK Disc Brakes available, for those of us without lathes (and the expertise to operate them)?
    5. Did the conversion to ATV wheels require mods to the spindles?
    6. What additions to your panel would you make to improve your piloting information?
    Thank you again and I look forward to your future videos.
    Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY
    PS. Kudos on the Quality Feline Child!

      2.5 gph average with aggressive flying ( Google Rotax 447 Gph)
      50:1 premix 2 stroke oil in fuel
      You can find a used firefly for $7-10K ($30k for a new one)
      Kolb does sell a Black MAX brake kit that is a bolt on setup
      Only the Tires are from a atv, rims are a standard setup
      I would like a analog altimeter but fly under 300ft most of the time so kind of useless ( Avare on a android device is priceless!)

      Thanks for the reply, I do appreciate it.
      I expected to be in bed by now, but my severe GERD is kicking my posterior right now.....gonna have to put the Bucket next to the bed again!
      I hate 2 strokes something fierce, do you know of any 4 strokes (used of course) that would work with the FF?
      I keep thinking of a motorcycle engine (550cc or so) that would do the job......just can't stand the noise of the 2 stroke!
      The FF looks like it handles really well and it seemed your cruise was about 55mph-60mph, do I have that about right?
      Take care and thanks again for the answers, oh, does Kolb market the used rigs, or can they be found elsewhere? I do searches for 'ultralights for sale' but 9 times out of 10, come up with Lancairs, Zeniths, Rans, or oddballs for the most part......have yet to see any Beavers or Chinooks, FF's, etc.
      How anyone in their right mind can consider a Lancair as a legitimate result to 'ultralight' is beyond me!
      Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY

      @@alanredmon4611 Could it be the pitch of the propeller blades that makes you get less climb? If you compare static rpm with Ben, you may get an indication about that.

    • @canoe365
      @canoe365 Рік тому +2

      Propeller diameter makes a huge difference at these low airspeeds. More reduction to keep the blade tip speed down, larger diameter to move more air more gently. Ben has the swept tips on his propeller blades, this reduces shock wave formation which reduces noise and increases efficiency. When I was flying Eipper MXs, some guys in the club installed the high thrust kit. The reduction was changed from 2/1 to 2.5/1, the prop diameter went from 54" to 68", and measured static thrust was up more than 50 percent with the same engine.

    Hi I am looking at purchasing a kolb firefly but I am a paraplegic with no use of my legs. I was wondering if you think it would be pretty easy to build a hand controls for the pedals either beside the throttle or with the throttle built in on the left side

    • @Uri1000x1
      @Uri1000x1 3 роки тому +1

      First, the stick with motorcyle throttle handle occupies the right hand. The left hand will stay on a rudder bar. The left hand moves the rudder bar back and forth. This handle would attach to tubes routed around and between your legs down to the rotatable rudder horn. I'm thinking of a verticle handle left of the stick. Route 4130 tubing from the handle around your left leg to under the seat without inhibiting stick movement.

    FireFly plans don't show an "H" weldment within the wing spar tube. Instead a sheet wraps around the bottom of the main five-inch spar tube and rivets to the tube center line of the spar. That leaves attachment points for the struts spaced five inches apart.

    • @bkairys
      @bkairys  4 роки тому +1

      Yup, that's the normal firefly setup. This has been modified by the builder to adapt the firestar method for a single strut.
