Six prongs are better than four as well. If one prong gets damaged on a four prong setting, you can easily loose the stone since half of it is open. With six prongs, if one is damaged, the other five still hold the majority of the circumference of the stone, so it won’t move.
So glad we didn't get the 4-prong! The associate said that it captures natural light better so it's prettier but I hated how 4-prongs look not to mention how delicate it looks 😭😭
I have an open gallery engagement ring and I DID get it resized and it was a massive pain! Had to go to a ton of jewelers who all turned me away. I love the look of my ring. But I would not suggest anyone get it. Had I known it was a struggle to resize it prob would have done something else. It does sit nice and low though. I love that.
you can easily size an open gallery ring, cut ring, create piece, solder piece keeping in mind some stones don't take well too heat. you never stretch a ring with stones, stretching is only suitable for wedding bands.
I really appreciate that you’re doing these based on value, longevity, practicality etc and not like so many creators that are like “avoid this at ALL cost” and it’s just their hyper specific, and often times unpopular, personal opinions solely based on trends. It really gets obnoxious after a while seeing all these jewelers and fashion influencers come out of the woodwork to say that someone who has an even mildly dissenting opinion from their own as wrong and bad. Apparently I’ve just had a bad run of creators because I’m not even into trendy things but it seems youtube just loves suggesting a 22 year old with annoyingly trendy taste as my selection of things I should apparently enjoy lol This was so refreshing, to watch someone whose opinions are based on real life scenarios and not just “this style is dated” because it was popular a year ago lol No 2 people have the exact same taste in anything, but most people can appreciate wanting to keep something that costs so much money in the best condition possible! I’m so glad your channel popped up it’s a joy to watch!
I gave my grandfather's ring to cleaning, and the jeweler drilled a hole underneath the stone into the goldband, so creating a gallery, to make it shine more. Now I can't wear it anymore cause it would need resizing and it can't be done anymore 😭😭😭
You could have easily gotten your money back and/or asked them for a complimentary resetting because they did something you didn’t ask for. But you should definitely see if a different jeweler can resize it for you, it’s possible although more challenging
I have a few videos covering it and we have our signature lotus style that’s even more durable than a standard petal because there are 4 hidden petals underneath! Feel free to check it out on our site or email for pictures ☺️
Thank you so much! Not only did you explain why you would avoid it which was very helpful, you also explained the terms you talked about. Now I actually now the terms and know what you talk about! Great job!
I have a very thin band WITH a protection plan. In the 6 years I’ve had it, I have broken my band once from wearing it while lifting heavy weights at the gym (my own fault) and the jeweler fixed it up good as new in a day. I love my thin band!!
I have a really thin band like in the video, but a small stone that's not sitting high and the band goes around it, kinda wave like, so it's not snagging on anything.
If you want a thin band then use a lower quality gold. Instead of 14 kt go 10kt. Also, do wear whatever you like and can afford. Don’t listen to these social media “influencers” because most of the time they have no idea WTF they’re talking about. 😂
I really love the idea of getting a thin engagement ring and as tbe wedding ring getting something that incorporates the engagment ring. My grandmother had one and she always let me play with it. ❤
Can you not resize the underside of an open-gallery style ring? Does it mess up the ring if the jeweler adds/subtracts some metal from the opposite side?
My engagement ring has a thin band but after 6 years, it’s never been an issue and I think it’s cause I don’t have a massive diamond on it. I feel like the biggest issue is putting a massive diamond on a thin band cause it protrudes way too much which leaves it susceptible to getting snagged and bent. Also the nice thing about thin bands it’s that if you have a smaller diamond on it, the diamond still looks beautiful and extravagant in contrast to the band since it’s thin. To be fair, I also have 6 prongs as the setting and the side of the setting has a sort of Eiffel Tower effect so it’s pretty secure
I dislike stones along the band as they are quite irritating to fingers. They actually hurt and rub even tiny fingers like mine. You'll be sorry and the ring will sit in a vault for eternity. And they can't be resized I was told. (such a huge waste of money)
I have a spinel bezel set engagement ring surrounded by a halo of diamonds. Would love to get your thoughts on spinel, it's such an unheard of gemstone
@@BijouLab I was thinking when the day comes that I propose that I’d like to have a diamond ring and a replica made from fake diamonds or crystal for her to wear on the regular and wear the real one on special occasions so she doesn’t damage it. Is that common
I have a bezel set engagement ring and I know it’s not as pretty or is missing the wow factor but I literally wear my ring every where, the band is a little scratched but I get it buffed and cleaned and the scratches aren’t as noticeable… I have 3 diamonds that are connected, a larger one in the center and two smaller ones on either side
Please explain how a gold band can scratch a diamond...and yes they can be resized by an experienced goldsmith, or cut and added to a new band. Wouldn't get one but not for the reasons you gave
Yep a client brought in a wide open gallery and had a neighboring triple pave band that scratched the pavilion facet. Yes of course anything can be done but it doesn’t mean it should. It will impact the structural integrity when resizing an open gallery like the style shown in the photo.
Love your content 💕💕 Can you do a video on durability of the pavè band in an engagement ring? I love the look but really worried about the tiny stones popping out. Also would you recommend getting a pavé gallery rail or plain? Thank you for your content it's really helpful ❤️
Mine is a pearl surrounded by diamonds. My band wasn't thin but it wasn't too thick either. We got a wedding band/guard to go around it and help protect the pearl. I get compliments even from jewelers a lot about it but now sure if it is considered a "stable ring"?
@@BijouLab yeah we were advised that anything could scratch it and depending on how I care for it. I could need to be replaced anywhere from 2-5 years. I really did not want a gallery rail for my engagement ring. My husband custom made it without, the prongs have to be checked more frequently but I honestly love the look.
Does this mean that rose cut diamond and moissanite rings can’t be resized? Most of them have an open back settings which allows you to see your finger through the stone.
As a fitter by trade this just gives me confirmation that I know how to look for quality structures 😂 it's sad so many rings have thin bands though, difficult to find a nice style with a thicker band where I am.
My moissanite got very scratched and they would not repair it even if I was willing to pay for it. It is 17 years old and the side abraded(not my engagement ring)
Ive resized plenty of open gallery rings with no issues. If it were a problem, it would have been gone over with me in my apprenticeship. No jeweler will ever recommend more than 3 sizes up or down on any type of ring that has stones though
So, I'm not getting engaged any time soon but since you know a lot about rings... What's a really good alternative to Moonstone? I love Moonstone, my favorite and it makes me happy but I'd like a ring that lasts too
In india we prefer a closed galary ring because we believe certain gemstones are to be worn according to one's birth chart. So we avoid having the stone touch the skin.
I would recommend getting a "work" ring, maybe a plain gold or platinum band, or something with low set diamonds, channel set may work best (and it's a very classic and timeless look) and then wear your wedding set, any style when you aren't working.
Exactly why I went with a full bezel and thicker band for mine. It was custom, so harder to do. But finding a ring that is meant to be worn daily is important.
I would caution anyone to make your band width is at least 2mm. And pave is actually really hard to do well, there is a metal/stone ratio that must be kept. Even when done correctly, you have to baby it, it will be a forever maintenance.

Disagree on the open gallery comment. We never had any problems sizing those. We just had a mandrel with a groove down one side to prevent chipping rhe stone. In fact, most gemstone rings are open gallery to better display the color of the stone.
My mom lost her diamond because it was open gallery and only 4 prongs. One got loose and it fell out. She cried for days. So I made sure to choose a secure design and have my ring checked periodically for prong issues.
It is a 10 on the hardness scale, but that doesn’t mean it is 100% resistant to scratches.
