- Any wood, highly degraded, and pre-punk works great for a hand drill fire board. We've all heard that Trumpet Vine, Willow, Cedar, Mulberry, Cottonwood, Basswood, etc make great fire boards, but even they will work better if slightly degraded.

That's a pretty good board holder with the knife.
Cottonwood board and a cottonwood spindle work very nicely. If you can get a yucca stalk for a drill that's the best. Bird's nest of dry grass works very well. Inner bark from a cottonwood is mosst excellent!
Definitely comforting knowing how to do something like this. Probably not a bad Idea to get a wild edible plant book as well if you aren’t able to hunt. Learning how to trap is definitely good as well.

This is hands-down the best video on hand-drills. Has less to do with the wood type and more to do with its natural degradation....
In alaska we got lots of poplar Aspen alder willow spruce and birch. This is a good thing to know. In case I lose my lighter

Good news I learned to identify my tulip poplars in West Central Georgia here , on my acreage , those branches are up high.
Usually the tallest trees in a forest.

Does cedar make a good fire board... I keep cedar shims I’m my car for good dry kindling
They should work.
In my part of the country we have mostly Yellow pine , Water oak and Some Cedar .
Are these woods ok for fire boards?
Yes, when degraded enough to receive a thumbnail print.
Would this also be the case for a bow drill fireboard?
Yes.
What did you do to fluff up the pine needles like that? Did you rub them in your hands? They seemed to catch well.
