  • Any wood, highly degraded, and pre-punk works great for a hand drill fire board. We've all heard that Trumpet Vine, Willow, Cedar, Mulberry, Cottonwood, Basswood, etc make great fire boards, but even they will work better if slightly degraded.
I wanted to show you what I look for when searching the woods for an ideal fire board... Let me show you this great Tulip Poplar specimen that I found just the other day. Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks!

Great camera work showing the notch as the friction dust builds up to ignition and a nice view of the Mora technique for holding the fire board in place. Thanks Dave!

Cottonwood board and a cottonwood spindle work very nicely. If you can get a yucca stalk for a drill that's the best. Bird's nest of dry grass works very well. Inner bark from a cottonwood is mosst excellent!

Definitely comforting knowing how to do something like this. Probably not a bad Idea to get a wild edible plant book as well if you aren’t able to hunt. Learning how to trap is definitely good as well.

This is hands-down the best video on hand-drills. Has less to do with the wood type and more to do with its natural degradation....

When I want to make a spindle what are the features I need to look for in the would, what trees give us these features
And is there a relation between the wood’s type used in the spindle and these used as a board?

Yes. Either, when the wood has degraded to the right density. See my hand drill playlist.

What did you do to fluff up the pine needles like that? Did you rub them in your hands? They seemed to catch well.
