When going through airport security and you're forced to take your watch off and place it in a bin raises my blood pressure.

Oceanblue when I was up and down to London Heathrow T5 every other week in an old sales job I took a watch pod (Breitling do a great padded one when back from service) with me for this very purpose. In the early days in Dubai airport one of my watches was put onto a tray which somehow got bumped up and the watch ended up being banged around loose on the conveyor belt. I made a fuss to grab hold of it and ended up being patted down like I was a terrorist. Makes me laugh now but probably put a new swirl on the clasp. Let’s be careful out there guys! :D
I found a deep sea sometimes activates the metal detector, a sub doesn't.
I always carry a small zippered watch pod to place it in. Amazon has them. Then I put all my personal belonging from pockets like money clip, chapstick, with wallet, phones, ect in a gallon Zip Lock type freeze bag. Keeps all of it together and harder to get stolen, knocked off, ect, ect. Works great, been doing for years.
You my friend are very deep into watch nerdery....and I love it!!
Life’s too short to worry about scratches. My watch is a good reminder for that
I'm glad I'm not alone in the way of wearing my watches :)) and it doesn't matter if I'm wearing Rolex, Omega, Seiko etc.

I'd like to add the car seatbelt buckle, I wear my watch on my left wrist and my wheel is on the left of the car. It's super easy to come in contct with the buckle as you carelessly unbuckle yourself and it retracts up past your shoulder.
The seatbelt is #1 prime suspect for me too.

The watches you own are too nice to sit in a drawer. Enjoy them as often as possible . If someone has the means to buy these, then I’m sure that a profit by way of investment is nice , but not essential. No point getting to eighty and telling someone you’ve a lovely collection of unworn watches. Tell them you own some classics that you’ve loved wearing and enjoyed a thousand times. Funding a first rate buffet at your own wake seems a crap idea to me.
Lol when I got my Rolex, I felt relief when I got my first scratch. It happened so I could stop worrying about it... Does that make sense?

It makes perfect sense. I've been a watch enthusiast for a few decades, and while I try not to unnecessarily abuse my watches, I've always believed that if I couldn't afford to scratch my watch, I couldn't afford to own it.
I would like to add for No.: 7. Sometimes walking when there are plenty of people like in the crowded streets or at the mall, for some reason 2 watches would collide. And you wish your watch survive that collision.
All you said are 100% true and non are impossible to happen. It is like that object is a magnet that gets into the way of our watch. Unbelievable magnet.
For so many years I have gone to these experience specially on a brand new luxury watch. The emotion really hurts. So deep that there is no reverse or to undo but to accept the fact the scratch was made and it is there permanently.
Here in our watch community, we were thought to accept it as a "Battle Scar" . A battle you went thru and may have won. Thus creating a character for the watch and a story and a memory of the of that scratch. May it be a good or bad story, you will not forget to tell. These are the adventures of these watch scratches or the success with that watch. There is always a story to tell. Accept the battle scar, take a deep breath to tell the story one day.

All great points my friend. I ride a motorcycle with leathers and also a bicycle, so can definitely relate.
Another good one to add is getting out of the swimming pool or getting back into the boat from the water.
Both scenarios will do damage and because people love to wear a diver into the water, it’s pretty common.

I _wear_ my watches. In general I take care not to subject my sapphire crystal to neglect but my bracelet is fair game. I don't cry over scratches - dare I say even gashes! They are meant to be worn :)
I’ll never forget this huge scratch I got on the bezel of my new explorer 2...was out in San Diego in the gas lamp district and while walking crossed paths w this guy coming the other way and his left wrist knocked mine and both of us were like wtf and shouted and then both checked our watches and got really angry/sad at the same time - it’s a terrible first world problem kind of a feeling.
Good info! Sometimes you can swear that watches get scratches just by looking at them! It's remarkable how easy it is, even if you're careful. I don't even like to even rub fingerprints off too much for fear of putting tiny little surface scratches on my high polish watches! I tend to live with small blemishes, but the more visible ones I'll buff by hand with a bit of polish and a soft cloth. 3M scouring pad on bushed finishes works well. Bracelet watches are the most prone, just resting the watch flat with the inside bracelet touching the caseback is the culprit of most caseback scratches. That and taking a bracelet watch on and off while wearing rings, especially hard Tungsten Carbide ones. One of the most common is resting your clasp on a desktop while working, or dragging a watch across the desktop.
Great advice. Thank you. Especially No. 2-Sleeves. I bought an Omega Aquaterra earlier this year. It had many fine scratches around the bezel in less than 2 months! I baby the watch as much as I can. I often work at cold and windy construction sites and I always wear long sleeved clothing. I believe that these fine scratches were from fine particulate matter at the margin of my sleeves. I would imagine that there is usually much quartz type minerals in such particulate matter. Quartz easily scratches steel. No worries though. I can always have my Omega’s scratches buffed out in the future. I still love that watch but my Citizen quartz Ecodrive Signature Courageous is my ‘beater’ watch.
Good points. If I can add one: Be extra careful with jewelry with diamonds. They can easily scratch the sapphire glass of your watch.
Mike D Rings. I scratched my watch with one before and now make sure I wear the rings with diamonds on the same hand as I am wearing my watch to avoid contact.
Mike D when you have a ring with a decent sized diamond in a prong setting, there is going to be a lot of edges that are exposed that could scratch something.

Mike D It happened with an emerald cut diamond on a modern Rolex with sapphire crystal. It could have been the prong but how likely is that really? Gold is super soft. And a diamond will still have more sharp edges and corners than a prong.
When I bought my first nice watch, a Breitling Blackbird, in 1999 I never gave a second thought about scratches and amazingly it never got scratched. Now I have a new Rolex Explorer 214270 and am very very careful. I never wear it gardening or doing DIY and always put it in a little pouch in a drawer when ding anything too problematic. Also I am not owning a Rolex to show it off so I tend to wear long sleeve shirts or hoodies etc. Another good video Raheny man.
If you’re a pilot the Boeing 737 is a scratch magnet for watches. I don’t wear my Omegas and Breitling when I go to work.
I wrap a hanky between clasp and watch back case before dropping in pocket, this avoiding bracelet to rub against metal. An overlooked and underestimated menace is the door handle! Often turning to pull a door shut the wrist can brush against the handle. On occasions this has caused some deep dings, at that point I kick out at the door in blind temper. My wife frowns and gently tells me to seek help!! Amusing vid by the way!!
Jeremy Pitotti do the same thing with mine but use a glasses cleaning cloth. Noticed just after a couple of days the back of the watch getting small scratches from the clasp
Hi, you are putting out great content, thanks for doing so. Had to smile when I spotted this title. Ive just been away and took my brand new Tudor and guess what - put some great dings in it- completely with out being cautious. Not that bothered as it’s a keeper but it certainly does still smart at first .

Great video.....and excellent advice. It never seems to fail that my left wrist will never find a door handle unless I’m wearing a good watch. That being said, a watch that lives in a safe is not really enjoyed. Life is too short not to enjoy not only the nicer things in life, but friends and family as well.
I saw a business type fella on the train, with a nice blingy Rolex GMT Master on the wrist. Dude's hand was literally out in front of him, so as not to disturb the watch in any way. Most ridiculous thing I ever saw.

I love my dinged up 2018 Sub (no date). It’s a tool watch.... gives it character imho. My Sub & Milgauss I just use & wear, they are pretty robust. My Patek is treated well, special occasions only.
I did exactly what you said around a door handle. Just got a 1987 stainless date just. I missed the door, it tagged the crystal because it stands up, right around the six o clock marker. Put a huge ding in it, went to the mall where I bought it, lucky for me it was arcrylic, they were able to buff it out. But a had a sleight slope in it, if you looked carefully. Eventually I got it replaced. Next year they changed them all to sapphire. Couldn’t do it if it happened again. Would just have to get new sapphire immediately. But to this day, I still have the watch, with a few cleanings, it still runs like a top. And still get many compliments when on. Matt.👍😎
I don't have a pocket exclusively for a watch. I do carry a suede watch pouch to protect any watch I put in my pocket or in my day-pack.
I can resonate with no. 3, I totally did what u would do when walking through the crowd. I once had my watch knocked into passerby’s watch and it was a loud knock that stabbed into my heart. Ouch!

Good advices! i can tell Another one that usually happens to me, scratching the bracelet of the watch with any metallic part of the belt, when you put the belt or just when you are sitted with the wrist resting near the buckle of your belt, aaag that really anoys me😤
There's only one way to keep a watch pristine and that's keeping it in the box and not wearing it. Unless you've just bought a watch for investment then that's a non starter. As such small scratches are inevitable and you just have to live with them. My number one culprit for a bad scuff is door frames. So easy to catch as you walk through...
The first one hurts, the second one builds character.
I'm left handed and wear my watch on the left wrist so scratches are bound to happen and I've quit worrying about it years ago.. Couple things I try to do is buy brushed stainless pieces and I'm very good at brushing out bracelets & clasps with scotch brite pads, on my 16613 I'll use cape cod cloth on the gold center links and polished case sides. Remember it's just a watch and most were tool watches years ago, enjoy the watch and if scratches happen at least you've put them on the piece.. Very amusing video;)
Great video and useful information. Even though I don't have luxury watches per say I do want to take care of them because I spent hard earned money on them and I am a person who likes to take care of my things in general. I think the reason its called traditional wear for your watch to be on the left wrist is because the majority of people are right handed so wearing the watch on the non predominate wrist would help on protecting your watch. My Dad is left handed and he has always wore his watch on his right wrist as does my oldest son, and I never told him he should wear it that way he just automatically put it on his right wrist. 100%. Thanks . It is just getting cold in Toronto. I wear a leather jacket with the zips on the sleeve. I will remember this . Also the bike locks . Sometimes downtown can be dangerous . I do take off my watch and put it in a pocket . Great video .
Speaking of door handles I hit the bezel of my two tone SD43 on the door knob the other day . I cant see anything on it but didn’t look with a loop yet. Another place I hit my watch is the door when I’m getting in and out of my car. Another good video, thank you!👍🏼
Mr Perpetual destroy your loupes. Any contact will leave a nanometre or two or impact damage if you blow your watch up to ten times the size and search every molecule of metal. Two tone highly polished centre links in putty soft 18ct gold. Forget about it. Those pieces pick up hairlines when you flick off a piece of fluff with a cotton bud. Relax into your patina it’s the only way.
wherever I am I always bring with me the case's watch no bags no pocket, just the case..always
i keep one of my travel cases in my truck at all times just in case i have to get dirty or something they are really nice compact and handy to toss a nice watch in to keep it safe, my wife got me a couple of the cheopz brand ones as a present a couple years back and they are pretty durable for the price at least... nice to have something like that in your car or truck or even for a lady in her purse to toss her watch into in a hurry :) love the video, alot of the reasons hit home with me haha, door handles are my watches worst enemy haha, i seem to be magnetized to any door handle in a 50 yard radius hahaha

- do not remove bracelet if you do not have a special tool and/or skill to do so;
- be careful when using a modern corkscrew to open a bottle. A lever can hit the watch when you put the corkscrew to the bottle;
- do not hold or take two watches by one hand.

2:26 have you ever wondered why watches (and wedding rings as well) are on the left hand? this is because most people are right handed, and the right hand will most likely to perform heavy & dangerous tasks for your watch. If you are lefty, just wear them on your right hand - there is practical reason that started this, and now we have this non-sense "etiquette" as we forgot how it started.

@@jayywatchesjapan3612 here you have it... etiquette. The heart story originates in medieval times, while the wedding ring is much much older tradition. Europeans got it from Romans&Greeks, and they did not had this "heart" side story. It was a practical thing in the beginning, not even a jewelry.

You live in Italy and you ride a Specialized Tarmac (Seiko)?!! No offense but "The King of Style" should have a Colnago (Rolex), a DeRosa (JLT), a Pinarello (AP) or a Tommasini (Breguet)!! And NO Shimano groupo!! Shimano is for fishing poles!! Campagnolo baby!! Love the channel!
Watch bracelet scratches the rear case of the watch or the opposite side of the bracelet itself . I keep my watches usually crown down on its side and the bracelet stretched out (if you dont have a watch hanger or a watch box . I also see metallic bracelets worn with a watch 😣 i dont really mind scratches but i avoid it if it could be helped

I knew I couldn't be the only person to do these things and think this way and really analyze these things to myself, I thought you were reading my mind, hahaa, I definitely have a little OCD when it comes to my watches and other things and may be a little over the top but I do take very good care of my watches, keeps em looking new, all great advice that I use and completely understand, hahaa, great stuff man👍
Generally keeping the watch wrist/hand close to your body (touch the thigh with your palm) while walking through doorways minimises a lot of accidental dings and also don’t desk dive with bracelets.
I recently scratched my Seiko Padi Turtle when I was snorkelling off a beach in Perth WA. It was scratched on the bracelet. Lesson learnt.. I should wear a divers strap not the stainless steel bracelet. I took my watch to an excellent local Jewellery Shop that managed to polish out the scratch.
At least you wore it doing what it was meant to do! I salute you!

I had the same bad experience with my GMT Master 2 when I opened the hotelroom door with luggage in my hand...... I was short before a heart attack! Since this time I am opening the hotel room door with my foot..... hahaha! Thx again for this interesting vid!

Simple, straightforward, but nonetheless very sound advice ))
None of those situations ever happened to me but I did bang my watch on the underside of a dinner table when lifting my hand up from my lap.
Wow I thought I was the only one. I have the habit of putting my hands on my lap and often wacking the bezel and crystal against the underside of the table. I'm much more conscious when wearing a nice piece, keep hands on the table.
Some more tips:
-Buy a pre owned (and slightly pre scratched) watch.
-A Sinn with a tegimented case is a particularly resilient thing! A couple of years of daily use, and no visible scratches or dings. Not even with a lupe!
-Note that old pocket watches have very few scratches compared to old wrist watches. That little pocket inside your right pocket in you jeans is for pocket watches.
Use leather ir rubber straps most of the time and the bracelet for special occasions

I remember my first luxury watch a Seamaster Pro. The first week I got it I scratched it on the bezel boarding a plane. Spent the whole 2 hours buffing it out using my jacket. When we landed you could hardly see the scratch, if at all. OCD on full display. 👍😜
Now I don't care. The next service will take it out. I do almost everything mentioned you do.😀
Pools for your dive watch, concrete is killer. The beach also. I recommend avoid wearing on the beach. Sand is killer. Sand will even scratch sapphire. Wear your beater to the beach. No exceptions. Sand will destroy your watch completely. A Gshock is perfect for the beach.

I've found that several layers of painter's tape works well to protect the watch from scratches when wearing them.

You can carry a small case that slips into the pocket to use as a barrier to grit or coins that may scratch your watch.
When I bought my Tudor gmt at a time when they were still sought after , I subsequently went for a bit of a celebration drink as it were .
The next morning I took one look at my brand new watch with all these little swirling scuff marks all over it and my immediate reaction was ‘ oh no I’m gutted ‘ . However, very soon afterwards ( seconds ) I thought to myself ‘ you know what ? Fuck it . These watches are meant to be worn so I’m gonna wear it ‘ . Wear your watches fellas . Great content Oisin 😉
I used to go hiking with my sub and would wear those heavy duty nylon military backpacks. While putting my arm through the straps of the pack, the rough nylon would essentially act as sand paper on your watch is it creates contact with the watch causing many hairline scratches. I learned the hard way. But since then, that watch has gained tons of other scratches from other activities, so I just stopped caring.
Belt head can be dangerous to our baby watches. Every time I am rush to loose my pant.......lol
Number 3 reminds me of when Joey from friends protected his sandwich when the gun shot went off! People don't realise the unseen effort that goes into acquiring this pieces of art.
Weird that watch hairlines scratches and dings didn’t bother me at all with an old Omega Seamaster I loved and wore for about four years straight. These days I’m more careful but the hardware has ratcheted up in price :) Your enemy is a loupe and obsessing over every mark. I’ve learned to avoid metal bracelets worn on the opposite wrist as both wrists come into contact on odd occasions metal on metal. Rings are out. Your friend is a protecting sleeve worn over the watch which also hides it from potential muggers. Slide the sleeve back to reveal. Slide back over to hide. Sat working at desks on keyboards. Watch comes off. Or you’ll scratch up your clasp to buggery in no time. Whenever I walk through a door frame my left wrist automatically goes behind my back. I’ve clumped my watches off too much metal work around door frames. It’s just a spider sense you develop. My Hugo Boss leather bike jacket has metal zipped pockets and heavy metal zip details. The enemy. Hands into pockets metal bracelet grinds over the zipper. Happened once with a Breitling. Hasn’t happened again. Wrist radar set to high alert. But. It’ll happen. No matter what you do. Especially when out drinking. Take a shit. Reach for the loo roll. Watch hits the metal bog roll dispenser. Unfamiliar buildings are the enemy with their alien fittings. Burn them down.

I’d add drawers (e.g. dresser or kitchen drawers) as a risk to dinging/scratching your watch if it’s not opened far enough. Reach in for some cutlery at your own peril!

I am just like you and always play defense when wearing a nice watch. Another one to be careful about is your wedding ring. If you take your watch off at night take your ring off first. Put watch back on in the morning first followed by your wedding band.

The worst in our pockets or any else place you put your watch, is grains of sand that are the hardest material you can find around (except diamonds of course !)

116500 got it brand new for 14k sold it for 17.5k (no idea they would cost so much now #ragrets). The first hour smacked it into a handicap sign pole in the parking lot. Scuff on the ceramic bezel. 118238 Day date. First few hours smacked it into the edge of a tempered glass door hard enough to leave a ding on the corner of the bottom lug. My grandfathers 80s Datejust with a hestalite crystal has probably been smacked 100+ times. He wore that watch like a gshock, doing everything with it, and its survived. When I inherited it you could barely tell the time from the scratches (which polywatch removed) Long story short the first few hurt the most, but the watch can take it. Easy to give advice though, im in the same boat. Why else would I still be sad about dinging my president today and watching this video at midnight?

What about scratching the caseback of the watch with the bracelet? I always try to avoid.. Hate them..
Also, don’t wear anything metallic like a chain/bracelet on the other wrist as it can rub against the watch while driving (when turning wheel). And if your partner is wearing a watch, swap places while walking so there is no chance of wrists colliding.
When I'm doing a bit of steel erecting I often use my Daytona to hammer bolts in place
And I still feel the pain. Even worse when the door left a mark, too. 🤣
To all the people who are saying you don't care about scratches. Cool i guess, but I'm not trying to have my reverso look wike it went through ww2. Personally I baby my watches, If I am in a situation where I think it could be scratched, i don't maneuver in a way to protect it. I just take the watch off, also I always use a non oem strap and that helps

The more you try to protect it the more scratches you get,my friend was very picky until he was diagnosed with a horrible disease he said to hell with babying a over priced watch it set his priorities in order very quickly

Important subject you chose. The one thing you missed when you are walking beside your girlfriend or wife and she is wearing a bracelet or bangle in her wrist, chances are there it would scratch your watch, so check in which hand she is having and you must choose the other side to walk. But I don't like your suggestion to keep your watch in the pocket particularly if it is a steel bracelet watch the pants are denim. The bracelet is good enough to scratch inside bracelet or case back. even if you put the steel watches flat at night chances are there to get scratches at the case back. I normally use a felt in between when I leave my watch for bed.
The belt buckle on your pants swinging around as you put your pants on is a serious hazard. Especially if it's a heavier type buckle.
