Exactly. Paris is nostalgic for a period when they had some compassion for their working class dupes and pretended to have some for everyone else. What we see now is a party for the wealthy minority who are - or wish to be - part of that minority themselves. Their respect is reserved for their donors, no-one else counts at all. Indeed, the most disadvantaged are to be vilified as the convenient other upon whom all ills can be blamed.

@@bluceree7312I was about to say the same, and also to add that they dropped the pretence before I was born (I'm 53)...
Were Enoch Powell, Margaret Thatcher, Ian Duncan Smith (yes I know he was in opposition at the time, still was a grade A wankstain) et al not big enough hints when they were around?

"The Tories HAVE BECOME a nasty party"??? You mean to tell me there was a time when they weren't? I've been around for over sixty years and cannot remember a time when they were anything else. A more accurate assement would be "the Tories have become an EVEN NASTIER party" - as if that were somehow possible.

the thatch allowed working class to buy their council house a cheap prices turning them into home owners. Many people in the 80's first got on the housing market that way. The tories dont hate working class.. far from it.. but they traditionally had an ideology of help people to help themselves. Unforutnately they also had a misguided idea of streamLining the UK industry which left many people very poor espec in the regions such as wales and scotland. Todays tories under Sunak are not Tories. ; they are Blair-Lite's.
What is far far more dangerous today is that elite are looking to outsource our democrasy to forigen organisations.. that is very dangerous to us all.. and whether you are left or right.. I would say that should be all of our greatest concern when we vote. Once the democratic will of the british people is outsourced.. there will be no way back..

What Matthew Parris might not have appreciated, regarding the piece about cyclists in Derbyshire, was that a few years earlier a local motorcyclist was badly injured by a cable deliberately strung across the road, between two trees.
His piece brought the memory of that incident brightly back, causing many considerable pain and resurgence of the fear of repeat incidents.
I’m sure he meant no harm but it was an unfortunate reference at the time.
I enjoyed the interview and entirely agree with his observations on what many of the Tory party have become, they are indeed unpalatable and would be more honest practitioners if they stood under the UKIP banner, though I doubt they are able to see it in themselves.

@@sawtooth808 I am not sure that I would count Enoch Powell. I actually have a lot of respect for Enoch Powell. I think he had an Achilles heel with race and neloiberalism. He also quit the Conservative Party in 1974 and became an Ulster Unionist so he is not very representative. I chose 1975 when Margaret Thatcher became Leader. That was when neoliberalism and back stabbing became mainstream.

For anyone who was alive in 1979 the Tories were always the nasty party and have never changed, it’s just that today journos only report what they are told to, and do no original thinking, they’ve now been told to focus on this. This performative cruelty has been in place since 2008, but as it has now impacted Mr Paris it becomes the story.

It is fascinating reading the comments because more people have voted Conservative more often than people have voted Labour or Liberal Democrat (or their previous incarnations) during the past four decades and more. Are commentators saying that the Tory party has unique powers to dupe their voters that Labour and co. do not possess, or are they saying that huge swathes of the electorate actually want a 'nasty party' in power? Or might it not be better to engage in why people actually voted the way they did rather than just opine in their own echo chambers.
Matthew Paris writes well, sometimes originally, and provides a moderate centre right view of the news, no more and no less than that.
