Ascending South Korea’s Most Respected Mountain

- Mount Halla, also known as “The Mother of Jeju Island” is one of South Korea’s most emblematic mountains. The dormant shield volcano serves an important role in balancing the surrounding ecosystem and provides ample opportunities for hiking and exploring. But for many South Koreans, the mountain is more than a topographical feature; it’s a spiritual presence akin to Mother Nature herself. Seung-Min Kim, a mountain search and rescue agent, has climbed the 6,400-foot peak more than 1,000 times. He intimately understands the mountain’s majesty and spiritual nature, as well as her perils.

I climbed Hallasan while I was studying abroad in Korea, over winter break, and it really was incredibly gorgeous. As much as climbing it in the snow made it exponentially more difficult, it was also so beautiful that I definitely don't regret it. That said, I was lightweight backpacking the country so I just had my hiking shoes, but to climb this mountain in winter you really do need crampons/chains or trekking poles, if not both. Climbing up was very challenging but doable, but the only reason I got down that mountain was thanks to the kindness of some better equipped fellow hikers who honestly half-carried me down.
If only people could respect each other as much as that man respects a volcano
and if only people could respect nature as much as this man does
youji and if only people could respect grammar as I does
Lukas Eggenberger lol funny. thanks for letting me know
Lukas Eggenberger idk if I'm right or wrong but I think you meant do instead of does...
To my impression, it seems that eastern values deeply integrated with nature, it treats nature as a highly respectable divine subject.
I didn't realise it ever snowed on Jeju. I've only been there in the summers when it's sweltering hot. They even grow oranges there!
mrharvest Yea i looked at my weather app and it showed temperatures like 8°C Like how does it snow
@ab qws It's a mandarine, originally Japanese called 'dekopon". They started growing them in Jeju in 1990. In the states they are known as Sumo oranges.
I lived in South korea for 9 yrars. I love mountain, so i hike a lot. I hike more then 100 mountain in korea. My most favourite mountain in korea is sobaeksan in danyang-gun. I do also complete haeparang-gil 770km in 18 days back to 2020.i did hiking in hallasan two times, its very beautiful mountain.
I had no problems at all reading the captions? Was that just me?
Natalie Longmire same
I love this channel! There are so many incredible stories told in a neat little package
This is the kind of peaceful video needed in the week leading up to finals. Very well done.
its cool to see snow while there are palm trees
Beautiful. Thank you.
lovely. absolutely adored the sound of wind
There's always a lot of old Korean people when I hike. It's nice to see that all ages can hike. Please bring a plastic bag with you just in case of trash, future hikers. Have respect for the environment.
Was I the only one that found reading the caption perfectly fine?
WhyHelloThere nope
Isn't Jeju the "Hawaii" of S.Korea? had no idea that Jeju has a mountain covered with so much snow; and of this beautiful. awesome!
Yes It is an island created by a volcanic eruption like Hawaii.
Actually Baekdu San Mt is the most respected for all North and South Koreans
SweetPlain san mean mt
I don't really know. Since Mt.Baekdu is far and not very easily approachable, while Mt.halla is quite easy to visit.
Allonso1234 you can only visit it through china if you live in SK or any part of the world that isn't NK lol
I've been to Barkdu. It's more legendary but I think Halla definitely has more mystique and perhaps more beautiful. The Baekdu being half Chinese is very commercial and a bit overrun.
People usually mean impressive or respective by a mountains size, height, of beauty, mostly being height. In this case, Mt. Halla is the tallest park in South Korea, so I think that's what they mean
Amazing !!!
The cinematography is way too underrated
예뻐요! 산이랑 영상 둘다
As a local it’s cool to see great big history made a video about this. Thanks for all the good times great big history we will miss you

There was so much beauty and poetry in this piece. Well done GBS?
Wow the person who narrated this has a very dramatic way of narrating.

Basically the body builder version of me with body oil on it
Thank you gbs for not cutting the narrator off in the middle
Hrm. Beautiful. I should like to climb this mountain once before I die.
Hi love u channel
fantastic
Impressive and beitoful mountain.
It might be my monitor settings, but it's hard to read the white text over the snow. Great story.
learn a new language just for a single video? okay.
Ryan Wellence it's a joke lol but I agree, great story.
the mountain's beautiful
The most respected mountains in America are twin peaks...
No, the most respected mountain in America is Donald Trump's ego.
US has the tallest mountain in North America.
Don't spoil this sacred video, will you.
From a few comments on this video and on past videos about South Korea, It seems like the editor isn't familiar with Korean because the speaker is always being cut off even if the english translation is finished. I feel like that's not showing a lot of respect for the interviewee.
It was made for an American audience.
Do one on Mount Kailash as well!!!
top !
Climb halla via seongpanak-yongsil traverse
what is the easiest path to take to reach the peak of hallasan? i will be with small kids
I love great big story better than buzz feed
One of GBS's best.
Maybe shouldnt've made the subtitlse white.
I could read everything just fine
Not me YES, you beat me to the comment! Who the hell thought that was good idea!? Honestly!
Hell yea it was
Not me I
People with not so good monitors or eyes are the problem
climbed it without knowing much about it, didn't feel that special to be honest and it only took a few hours up and down. but the whole area (jeju) is beautiful and packed with tourists. great video though!
First and good video
No, they're all pretty good.
Youssef Higgins. He meant that he was first
Baekdu Mountain is most respected mountain by korean people
When President Moon went to Mt. Halla, he saw a white deer. It's very cool that this video mentions about white deer being a symbol of fortune.
Who is the motion director for this episode? I am mesmerized by this!
Do you mean cinematography or Motion graphics/animations?
descending it's values
0.44 are those palm trees if yes i want them i live in the north
Wow I am early!??!?
EARLY SQUAD I SUMMON YOU
I want to move there.
Please make the subtitles easier to read.
really smart to put white letters on top of images of snow....
I've been to Jeju Island, but never been to Mt. Halla
The guy speaking is a nice narrator
White on white, very bold artistic statement.
Ill be hiking Seoraksan soon :D Dinosaur ridge. Hope i dont die up there.
How did you go??
This is also where pink diamond was shattered : '(
Doesn't the guy kind of look like Ip-Man
can you fix the captions its always white and couldnt read it at all.
You blind?
totally am actually im competely blind
of course its sarcasm
Now try climbing North Korea's highest mountain
hi
.
,
Exactly.
The frick the narrator sounds like Kim Taehyung! (V)
land of thrones
"the mountain is white as a brides veil" try to read that with white subitles, cant see shit
Shouldnt your quotes be emptythen ?
Thumbs down. Whoever thought "white subtitles without a border is a good idea for a video about a snowy mountain" should reconsider what they do and how they do it. It's not that hard to add a border. The subs are basically invisible on certain shots and this is my first thumbs down but not the first time I've had this problem with GBS.
who is editing your videos...the interviews are choppy. his flow is cut abruptly. anyone who can speak korean can tell this video was made badly..get a new editor or if its a language problem between the director/producer and editor or something get it sorted
Yeah, I've seen many comments like this one on other GBS videos about South Korea. It seems like the editor isn't familiar with Korean because the speaker is always being cut off even if the english translation is finished. I feel like that's not showing a lot of respect for the interviewee.
well considering these were commissioned for an english speaking, american audience... I dont think it matters. Even if the creators cared about making sure the interviewers werent cut off, it would go unappreciated because it was made for americans.
boring af
I'm early uhm uhm...
