What Happened to Single Prize Decks in the Pokémon TCG?

- Single prize decks have historically been the backbone of the Pokémon TCG since the very beginning. And, until recently, these decks have been able to keep up with the meta, regardless of power creep. That is, until recently...
Today, I'll be taking a deep dive into what happened to the single prize archetype and explain why nobody plays them competitively anymore!
This video took over 34 hours to write (6 pages of script!), record, edit, and make the thumbnail! I really put my all into this video, I hope you enjoy my "magnum opus" video essay! Let me know if you'd want to see more like this on the channel!

14:55 Thwackey actually doesn’t need the stadium, just a Festival Lead Pokemon in the active. As long as you have a Dipplin in the active spot, you can just fetch a Festival Grounds from your deck. It’s a real shame the stadium doesn’t do anything else though, like reduce damage or something
Oh, I didn't notice that, thank you for the clarification! That definitely makes things a lot better for the Festival Lead deck! I also think that Festival Grounds could've had a cooler effect, like maybe a coin flip for an Item card search, or something to help protect the deck itself...
Stadium prevents all conditions from affecting your pokemon...not that it matters with out weak conditions other than poison are.
Having a Goldeen with Festival Lead also helps if you only have a Dipplin in the active after it gets KO'd. That way, if you still have Applin on the bench, you can chain your set-up
@@dannik9932 Stadium's effect literally makes the deck worse because you can't use binding mochi :(
@@ussgordoncaptain How are you going to use binding mochi in the first place? There's no way I'd risk putting B. Bonnet on my bench to be gusted into the active and stuck...or to have to start with it in active...that would just end your draw engine. Just recycle max belt with Rose.
Also, it does gatekeep some single prize decks like Klawf and Conk as they cannot even poison themselves.
It's not a great effect, but I wouldn't call it detrimental.
Alot of these single prize decks rely on gimmicks which is probably why they come and go so often. I like decks that use a mixuture of single prize and ex attackers. Galvantuala ex uses both ex and shrouded fable galvantuala and gardevoir ex uses drifloon/scream tail
That's a great point, I totally agree with that! Pure single prize decks like having cool gimmicks that unfortunately almost never work. But I think that a format that could embrace a better relationship between single prizers and multi prizers (especially in the same decks, like you said) would be much healthier for the game, although it would be pretty improbable. Gardy and Galvantula are great examples of a healthy symbiotic relationship, I would love to see more decks like them!! 😁
Then I like Charizard Ex with Dusknoir
10:14 Just to be _that annoying guy_ , Manaphy doesn't protect your bench from Dragapult because he places counters, don't do damage.
The only true protection against Dusknoir or Dragapult it's the Temporal Forces's Rabsca.
Then let me be the annoying guy that tells you that rabsca is doing exactly nothing against dusknoir ;) rabsca prevents damage and effects from attacks not damage and effects from abilities
I love my Festival Lead deck, but I do believe they are probably trying to keep single prize decks out of the meta to "speed up" the games. Games take less time if you only have to KO 3 pokemon compared to 6.
It's a real shame, because Festival Lead is such a cool deck in concept. If there weren't so many gatekeepers, I genuinely think it would be a solid B tier deck! However, you're definitely right. Creatures wants games to feel "exhilarating" and "fast paced" with the big dumb 2 prize beat stick decks, which is a real shame. Wishing you the best with your experiences with Festival Lead! 😁
Saw my boy Dipplin in the thumbnail, had to click. If Festival Grounds has 0 players I am dead
Festival Grounds is such a cool deck, I absolutely love the synergy between all the different Pokémon in the deck and how it's completely self-reliant without needing ex Pokémon! I respect the grind, mate, keep at it! Don't let those pesky gatekeepers get in the way of your experience! 💯
right there with you!
Nope, got my swirlix/arven based Festival Grounds deck here on my deck beside me right now.
Real, Festival grounds is one of the most fun decks I’ve played in tcgl.
@@zacharyjackson7584 Swirlix as main attacker? Is that really playable?
Single-prize decks are non-existent in this meta, to the point that single-prize decks themselves need two-prized support cards like Fezandipiti ex. Bibarel alone cant keep up with consistency.
It's really unfortunate to see how heavily single prizers rely on ex support Pokemon... it just defeats the whole purpose of playing single prize decks to begin with. Single prizers definitely need more self-sufficient support
I think if only the decks were like Gardevoir deck the meta would be much healthier, there is so much decks who go turbo and could end a match in 3 turns
I think making most or all multi-prize decks "glass cannons" of sorts would balance the game out a lot more. Games could slow down a bit, but it would also allow for some more interesting gameplay. Seeing everything just be turbo beat stick decks does get old really quickly lol
@@pikiptcg I'm trying out the Terapagos Dusknoir deck lately although is funny in the beginning simply deny the other player to set up or do crazy comebacks, after I few days I think it just too much... Sometimes I feel bad for play this deck
I'm literally in the same boat right now, mate... I've been grinding with Terapagos/Dusknoir for about a week now and I definitely feel the same way... Dusknoir is completely unfair in its own way 😅
@@pikiptcgYeah, Dusclops seems kinda good, but 13 damage is just too unfair
Gardevoir is a little unhealthy for single-prize decks too tho. It beats most of them, excluding Ancient Box
the Venomoth Froslass in my back pocket:
though yeah you right
Froslass probably my favorite card rn, so definitely not a fan of dusknoir
Venomoth/Froslass is super annoying to go up against every time, but sometimes it just falls short of being disruptive enough. It also doesn't help that Dusknoir and Kyurem completely shred entire boards, though...
@@pikiptcg Dusknoir isn’t as big a problem as you may think if you’re able to Salvatore out Venomoth, or if you go first and attack turn 2. Rare Candy is an Item card, so they can’t get Dusknoir out right out the gate, plus of course no Item search cards. Hell, many lists don’t run any Dusclops at all so Item lock the whole game = no Dusknoir the whole game
I also feel like it’s disruptive enough if you run Dusknoir yourself. May be a bit weird, but you never know.
Currently, asking for a Salvatore turn 1 going second is a bit of a stretch though, but I genuinely believe that will change with Service Bell. I could be wrong, but we will have to see haha
would dragapult ex be a runner up for the 4 horsemen
oh i just got to that part
Games are better when both teams have only 1 prize card decks imo
I agree, you can play out a more engaging and in-depth game rather than losing to a Turn 2 Kyurem or double Dusknoir/Charizard combo (which is sadly quite common right now... )
found a girl that likes tcg on hinge but ghosted her cuz she was too far away from me and then this vid pops up and i regret everything
lots of girls like tcg, and lots of love is in your future. Humanity is built to love and also collect little cards
hold this regret close so you remember to love a bit more fully. I hope you stay well. It's gonna be alright
I'm really sorry to hear that, mate. I've felt that sort of regret before as well. You've got time, my friend, your perfect partner is out there somewhere! Keep your chin up high and keep on trying, you've got this! Take care of yourself, mate! 🫂
Don’t ghost people! At least tell her why you think things won’t work out (the distance) instead of leaving her wondering and possibly feeling insecure.
I think what is hurting Single Prize Decks is the card philosophy that the Pokemon Company seems to be going down as of late. Cards like Dragapult and Dusknoir to spread damage around for mutliple knock outs to Iron Hands and Briar to that just gives extra prizes, making it so hard for single prize decks to get going.
I have Dragapult and Terapagos decks for competitive play, but I enjoy single prize decks like United Wings more due to them normally being more creative in strategy than just setting up big boy and swing. Doesn't help that these ex decks tend to run Seal Stone engine, which is so frustrating to play against.
I think rotation might help a little bit with the issues with Seal Stone engines and Double Turbo Energy. It'll help slow the game down for a tiny bit, but like you said, the card philosophy that TPCI is going for will just cause new problems to pop up everywhere... It's super frustrating, I totally agree with you.
This is so well made!! 18 minutes of S-tier editing and recording. holy sh*t I hope you gain traction🫶🏻 so deserved
Thank you so much for the glowing compliments!! I poured my heart and soul into this project, and seeing your comment really made my day 🥰
Thank you for all the kind words, God bless you mate and thank you so much for watching!! 💚
My first deck was “baby” Dragapult. It was so much fun. The first game I won with it we went into time and my opponent observes the difference in prize cards between us and asked the judge “How do I win?😭” I hope it somehow gets back in rotation
Baby Dragapult was one of the most annoying decks to play against, but so much fun to play... It would be nice to see more Pokémon like it in Standard I definitely think there's a place for something like Baby Pult in the meta right now! (Also I absolutely love the story about your first win, I can assure you that your opponent was 't the only one who said "how do I win" against Pult... I said that a lot too haha 😅)
I think the best way to make single prize decks better would be a card like “You can only use this card if you don’t have any multi-prize pokemon in play.
During this turn, if your opponents active pokemon is knocked out by an attack from one your active pokemon, take one more prize card.”
Obviously this could mean mirror matches would be disabled, but could at least do something. Defenitally would be a Supporter so one per turn, and could maybe be a Heath Card? Thoughts?
I like this concept of Prize boosting, but I also think it could be really dangerous. There are some big damage single prizers out there, like Conkeldurr, Klawf, and Roaring Moon, so that could be super bad for the game if you go after opposing support Pokémon like Squawkabilly. I think this would be a great ACE SPEC though, it could really give single prize decks a huge boost!
Briar but for single prizers instead of tera pokemon
11:23 exactly man, I wouldnt dislike the current powercreep as much if the current sp pokemon could keep up, but the fact we are still getting stuff like "3 energy for 100" with very few modifiers for damage (yeah mochi exisits but deck space) is what hurts for me the most.
(Especially disappointed in the likes of feraligatr, 280 for two basic waters felt like it should have been enough)
Feraligatr had so much potential, but like you said, most single prizers just have disappointing costs for disappointing effects/damage. Power creep would be fine if everything was boosted, but instead Creatures favors the flashy cards that'll make them money. It's overall just really unfortunate 😕
@@pikiptcgit is very disappointing :( still holding out some hope it gets better with next year's sets but feels unlikely rn
@@emberpowertcg7692it would be worse with Trainer's Pokemon. Because the Trainer's Pokemon we got rn as of Worlds are the one that can interact themselves, i.e: very restrictive not widely covered, like Marnie's Grimmsnarl. Accels D energy *ONLY* to Marnie's Pokemon. So what, do we use Thornton to make use of 5 Darkness energy? Hail no. Too much to ask.
The comeback cards like iono and counter catcher also screw over single prizers, cuz you'll generally be slightly ahead in prize cards
The quality in this thumbnail... just wow man congrats on this video!
Thanks mate!! I worked really hard on this video (34 hours!) and I'm glad that you enjoyed the thumbnail! (I had to use a new software and everything for it... but I think I could do it again for the next high quality video!! 😁)
@pikiptcg hell yeah man, it looks like the views and everything are starting to reflect your hard work 🔥🔥
Also dragapult is the bane of my existence. It ruined gen 8 ou for me and i audibly said f^ck when i saw what dragapult ex did when it dropped.
I thought it was a fraud at first because it flopped in the Twilight Masquerade format, but it really has made a major resurgence due to Sparkling Crystal. It's crazy that Dragapult continues to be a menace in both the TCG and it VGC 🙃
I know little to nothing about the meta of Pokémon tcg but this popped into my feed and I gave it a watch as a huge card game fan, great video great explanation good use for procrastination 10/10
Watching this made me want to play more single prize decks, especially united wings, ancient box, and maybe lost box variants.
Go for it!! I'm rooting for you, mate! Wishing you the best of luck! 💯
Me too akdjdksjskshs
Except I’m here revamping my Scolipede deck out of sheer stubbornness to make this bug horse work and become a spooky bug horse
Working with someone else who is actually well versed in and apparently well known for playing single prize decks on making my Scoliosis deck (yes, Scoliosis because i said so) work as well as it possibly can.
There's a pretty fun venomoth / froslass deck, check it out!
Ancient Box is really fun, I say this as an Ancient Box player. I run a slightly modded decklist bc Pokestop is a nightmare to find
BROOOOOOOOO! WHAT a video! I don't even Pokemans and I was entertained. Nice work.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!! The 34 hours it took to edit this definitely was time well spent!
My ideal philosophy is this: it should be worth using the deck space worth in cards to use a Pokémon of that many prizes. So a 2-prize Pokémon should only be as good as 2 single prize Pokémon of the same stage.
Unfortunately, this isn’t quite the case. Very few single prizer Basics can OHKO a 2-prize Basic with weakness before it can OHKO them even with turn advantage to get out energy. And without weakness, you have to build up 2 separate Pokémon to get the chip and finishing damage.
Another thing I’d like to see: non-Rule Box have addition weakness based on their max HP, while Rule Box always have x2.
If I’m playing a 70 HP evolving Basic with a single energy 20 damage attack, and the opponent is playing a Basic ex with single energy 40 damage, I don’t want the Basic to be OHKO with weakness, but instead take +20 = 60 damage.
I think part of the reason might be streamed championships. Look at the full art cards and tell me how many aren’t 2-prizers, let alone cards that haven’t seen use in the meta.
I like your ideas about bending the rules a little bit to benefit single prize decks. It would be a bit difficult to accomplish, but that might be one of the only true solutions for the pitfalls single prizers fall into. And I totally agree that streamed games really hurt single prize decks, newer players are going to see these flashy big HP Pokémon ex and then go get a League Battle deck to play their own multi-prize beat stick decks. At this point in time, there's just no winning for single prizers
@@pikiptcg If you look at the old cards and the Pokémon TCG Pocket cards, they all have addition weakness. It wouldn’t be hard to implement this into new cards.
As for making 2-prize equal in value to playing that many single prize of the same stage, I can see how that would be hard. Then again, we could just print cards that specify “[evolution] Pokémon without a rule box.” We already have one in Reversal Energy; we can make more energy, tools, and stadiums that do the same. Maybe we can even make supporters that have that condition, with an added stipulation of “during this turn, that Pokémon can’t evolve.”
My point about the full arts isn’t just the flashy big prize Pokémon. But the specialty secret rares are almost always meta valuable cards. We never see beautiful secret arts for trash Pokémon, so less people want to buy them.
Best video I’ve seen all month! Keep it up bro!
I really appreciate it, dude! I'm so glad you liked it, I spent 34 total hours on this project and I'm super happy that it's doing well! We'll have to do some brainstorming for the next big project at some time!! 💯
And this is why I play cube draft. It isn’t fun to play huge ex, gx, V decks anymore because you build your deck around one singular card usually. With cube draft you have to adapt to play with various attackers.
Cube formats have always interested me, but I've never had a chance to give it a go... I'll have to look into checking them out!!
Oh. Prize like the weird life system that lets you win if you run out.
Nothing about night March was healthy is the funny thing lol. I agree that single prize decks aren't very good right now but that deck was broken back in the day. The biggest issue with them is balancing everything. It is easier to balance the game around bigger damage higher health cards I'd think than having it be low health single prize Pokémon.
To be honest, I didn't play competitively during the time Night March was legal, so my analysis in the video might be a bit skewed compared to reality 😅
I agree with your comment about balancing, it's really tough (especially in the modern game) to balance cards nowadays thanks to power creep. And, like you said, it's easier to spend resources around meta cards rather than smaller cards with less impact. I wish I was able to play during the Night March era to see how broken it was...🥲
@pikiptcg be happy you didn't tbh. Night march was a feast or famine deck that either dumped its whole deck turn 1 or lost on the spot to the funny toad. It frequently had to play like a two prize deck due to its reliance on dce which is hilarious as well.
As a United wings enjoyer, i very much relate to this video. Those gatekeepers are the stuff of my nightmares 😅 was honestly surprised at the list that was shown though since mine is fairly different
Cool to see diversity like that, really
14:58 just a clarification, Thwackey only relies on any card with the Festival Lead ability. Festival Grounds does not need to be in place for his ability to work.
This video is an awesome breakdown. New sub!
Thank you for the correction! I must've missed that when I was scriptwriting! I really appreciate you, mate! Thank you so much for your support! 😁🙏
the 14:08 baby analogy is some of the funniest youtube footage i have EVER seen
When I was editing that segment, at one point I just stopped and stared at my screen and wondered, "how the heck did I come up with this" 😅
I'm glad you liked it lol
Great video! I like the fast paced format 👍🏻
Thank you so much! And of course you would like the fast-paced format, Mr. Miraidon enjoyer!
More single prize cards should have ways of increasing damage output or nerfing opponents, such as each energy is extra damage, or energy in the discard etc. Maybe some abilities such as if you have no Rule Box pokemon in play, this attack does extra damage, or if your opponents active pokemon has a rule box, choose one of their attacks, and that attack cannot be used by any of their pokemon during their next turn (Yes this is aimed at Zard I hate it lmao)
This is a completely possible and reasonable buff/solution! All of the effects that you've mentioned have been implemented on tons of different Pokémon in the Standard format alone, but unfortunately most of them are on unplayable or practically useless Pokémon. I definitely think that if some "mainstream" single prizers were given these secondary effects/Abilities, they'd have a much better and more balanced shot at success! Great ideas, mate!! 😁💯
Kyurem also has canonical reasons to hate the colress
That's very true! I wouldn't be very happy if I were experimented on by someone with a goofy haircut in a lab coat either! 😅
Kyurem only seen play in Regidrago, not as a tech in an on itself. I don't even see Kyurem teched in smth like Gardevoir. It is because Kyurem is *too restrictive* , it needs someone play Colress cards to make it work, which is rare outside Lost Box, which is not common rn.
amazing video, this is the type of content this community needs
Appreciate the kind words, my friend!! It really means a lot to me! I'm glad that the 34 hours this project took were 100% worth it!
Why exempt ancient box? It’s literally THE single prize deck at the moment? Plus festival lead but that one is a little slow
Ancient Box is relatively less affected by the major gatekeepers that hold every other single prize deck back. Plus, it can get aggressive and go turbo just like any multi prize deck relatively quickly, so that's why I decided to keep it exempt from the rest of the video (since the rest of the video was mainly talking about the aforementioned gatekeepers). Festival Lead is really good on paper, but it's really held back at this point in time by both itself (super fragile, sometimes a bit lackluster) and basically every gatekeeper in the format at the moment.
I got back into the game right before 2024 rotation and my clefairy deck got killed. Its slowly getting more support but the cards that beat it are still better than what makes it good.
I played Clefairy on my channel 2 years ago during the Lost Origin meta, and it felt great back in that format, even with the early Lost Box builds floating around. Nowadays, there's just so much counterplay and gatekeeping cards compared to protection cards, which makes playing fun decks like Clefairy super difficult. I'm hoping we get some more effective protection cards soon!
I like playing non meta decks and I will say the gatekeepers effecting the single prize decks make playing non meta decks impossible too
I saw ForTheWinTCG talking about this too in his more recent videos, and I think it's really unfortunate. Gatekeepers are a major reason why I don't try playing as many rouge or non meta decks on my channel at the moment. I hope things improve for the future so that us off meta deck enjoyers can succeed again!
@@pikiptcg I play them anyways, but PTCG live loves to give me disadvantages on top of the inherent ones:
Sorry, you can't grab your Bibarel with that ultraball you just played...it's bugged out.
Yeah, I'm just gonna prize all the most important cards for you.
So you Iono'd your opponent down to one card...well, let's give them the that one copy of research they play as their top-deck (no, that will never happen for you, don't even ask for it).
Ah-ha! I see you expected me to mulligan you twice and still give you a bad hand so you play Carmine....well, jokes on you. Go ahead and throw away boss, counter catcher, rod, your ace spec, and the evolution you need for next turn (don't worry, the other 2 are prized...with your other boss).
Heads? For you? Silly rabbit, heads is for your opponent.
The only match I could find for you was a perfect counter to your deck...for the last 4 matches!
Great video, although I kinda wish you'd talked about decks like Ancient Box a bit.
I honestly don't know what could solve this situation that would still bring money; but the truth is, most people do enjoy playing fast-paced decks that can one-shot any Pokémon.
If I were to make this video again, I definitely would've had a more dedicated segment for the successful single prize decks like Klawf and Ancient Box! I think the best solution that would keep profits high would be to buff protection against gatekeepers and the single prizers themselves, to make things a bit more exciting and give a bit more incentive to play a single prize deck!
I get that people don't like slow games but the ease at wich current meta decks can knock out one-prizers is insane. Having three of my ralts get sniped by a combination of dusknoir and prime catcher terapagos before I can take my second turn feels rough lol
I honestly would take it a step further, watching 3 Ralts get obliterated Turn 2 is actually just disgusting... there's not really anything you can do to protect yourself, and it's a really bad issue.
I miss my Rapid Strike Malamar so much. Best single prize deck ever
I had tons of fun with Malamar, it was super succesful and a blast to play... I miss it too, mate 🥲
so this whole video is basically "right now in the meta single prize deck are not played much, and i'm sad"
solution? wait for another single prize deck to come out, just because there isn't one now (even tho there is ancient box but let's just say that we don't count it because it's really rogue) doesn't mean that there will be no such deck, it just means that the cards in the current legal rotation right now have a different meta, that's how metas work, they rotate in and out to make a good environment
I agree with you 100% here! I tried to explain these points at the end of the video (different/rotating meta, especially around gatekeepers), but I like the way you worded it here! I think that Creatures will eventually get something single prize to stick!
The problem is that there are several single prize decks with high potential to work in any other meta. Ancient Box, as you mentioned, has proven its power a few times, though has a hard time pulling the numbers it feels like it should be doing. United Wings has a lot of support going for it right now, but dies too easily to spread. Festival Lead is a gimmick that can do numbers when it works. Heck Lost Zone has proven itself multiple times at this point, but is also having a hard time maintaining those against the big names.
Ultimately the problem is that it is an oppressive meta towards Single Prize and Rogue decks. There just requires too much to deal with without enough answers. Hopefully we're due for a new basic protection card on the lines of a Manaphy or Jirachi, that give protection against Drago/Dusk Spread or something that limits the prizes the opponent can take.
I am not certain what the solution is, but for many of us who like playing and refining non-meta/Rogue decks, a solution is going to be needed, less the meta becomes more homogenize with the meta decks gaining more consistency and power with each set.
I love they brought back the legendary birds GX attack as a counter to lost box.
I really thought that was a super cool callback as well... until it started obliterating things other than Lost Box thanks to Regidrago lol 😅
I'll tell you what happened: Path to the Peak rotated. Rulebox pokemon getting a nerf was the only thing balancing single and multiprize decks.
ironically i use Iron Hands on lost box and i specifically save 2 mirrage gate for it, ive won so many matches online with it, and some weekly in locals and i found it so satisfying seeing their face going from happy and excited to gasp and shocked after they see my iron hands getting 3 or prizes because i kept chipping them away with sableye and to rub salt on the wounds i used Ursaluna EX to finish the game (people in my locals have this weird grudge againts ursaluna so i just want to fuel the fire even more)
Lost Box is always super satisfying to play, and I think it's probably the best single prize deck at embracing multi-prize attackers. I'm glad you're having fun terrorizing your locals, though, I always love a good Ursaluna finish out of nowhere!
TPCI makes silver bullets on purpose for single prize decks because they hate them. Multi prize decks usually have more expensive cards, and halfway through a generation they will just decide they don’t want you play these.
ADP to Malamar, Kyurem to Lost Box, etc
I agree with the "silver bullet" philosophy, but I'm not sure if it's because TPCI hates single prize decks specifically. I personally think it's more of a marketing situation, they want to make cooler and flashier cards that have absurd effects to say, "hey, look at what this stupidly overpowered card can do!" The two examples you gave are perfect representations of a deep hatred for single prize decks, though, so you might be right 😅
no klawf mention? it got 3rd at joinville regionals
I scripted/recorded this video a few days before Joinville, so that's why Klawf wasn't mentioned. I definitely think it deserves an exception from a lot of the single prize flaws that I talked about though!!
@@pikiptcg do you think that with Klawf having exceptions to a lot of the flaws of single prize decks that it's possible for many strong single prize Pokémon decks to be made with clear but less impactful flaws (e.g. Klawf needing multiple combo pieces so hand distruption becomes much more effective, ancient box relying on Sada to reliably set up, Snorlax having an extremely skewed matchup spread, etc.) through designing the single prizers around the counterplay instead of just boosting stats? Or adding more support for single prizers that helps them compete?
Just spitballing, something like a Stadium that prevents the effects of attacks and abilities on non-rulebox Pokémon could be a strong form of counterplay that is still interactive for both sided and fits multiple archetypes
It's an interesting conversation to have for sure and i do wonder if we'll see more strong meta decks that play around forcing good trades by way of having fewer to no multi prize Pokémon
@@carsthatdrive1891 Klawf honestly sets a good example and a solid standard for what I wish single prize decks could be right now (High HP, big damage, at the cost of having multiple combo pieces). I think the best solution has to include higher stats to keep up with power creep, but I would love to see more direct counters to popular meta decks to keep the single prizers alive in matchups with stuff like Dusknoir. A counterstadium similar to something like Neutralization Center seems like a really good idea, especially since the Stadiums in the format are mostly healthy and allow for decent/healthy counterplay.
I'm hoping that as time goes on, single prize decks can feel more comfortable and "settled in" to Standard. And while it might take a while (ex. waiting for the current gatekeepers to rotate), I definitely think it's possible!
I loved playing lost box, but the format actively has made playing it so bad. I can’t believe that they really made an anti-box card in kyrem
I thought it was weird timing for Kyurem to be released in Shrouded Fable. Lost Box was already on the decline, but the fact they printed this "nail in the coffin" card is actually just ridiculous
United Wings should do more damage to compensate for the HP power creep. It would be perfectly ok if it was even 30x instead of 20x.
I agree! I would most likely cut the number of United Wings Pokémon back down to 12-14 to keep things a bit balanced, but I think that in the current state of the game, 30x would actually allow United Wings to be a contender in the meta, even with all the gatekeepers!
i miss gx format so much. the meta was so diverse
I'm with you, the GX era up until Team Up (and... Tag Teams, ugh) was super fun to play, and lots of things (especially single prize decks) were viable back then! Everything went downhill as soon as ADP took over and the game hasn't been the same since
I like playing single prize deck, I played lots of Festival Decks recently, but I have to agree. Especially Kyurem + Dragapult ex is super annoying and you can't really protect yourself.
Rabsca is too hard to get into play imo; Manaphy is a must-have, but its effect is too weak.
Imo they should just print a stronger version of it that offers better protection.. And maybe also something that protects against effects that take additional price cards
If I were to give single prize decks an immediate fix right now, I'd definitely prioritize better protection against gatekeepers. I like the idea of Prize card control, maybe an effect that only benefits single prizers just to give more on an incentive to play them? I like your thinking process here!
As much as possible i often lessen the use of double prizer. Its not that the single prize are getting out of hand, most players wanted to start with a meta decks rather than to start with the weaker ones.
Massive respect there mate! We definitely could use some more single prize (and less beat stick meta deck) representation out there! You bring up a great point about newer players, it's tough to get started with single prize decks right now because of all the resources for new players having meta decks involved. Plus, playing with a weaker deck is definitely not an incentive to play. That's a great aspect of the situation that I didn't consider, thank you for pointing that out!
I wish Pokemon add more cards to a one prize archetypes and didn’t give up after one set. Also maybe a lot more cards that rule box cards can’t use like twin energy ?
United Wings has gotten a bit more support over time, but it just hasn't been enough. I like the idea of more powerful supporting cards that only single prizers can use, though, that's a great idea! 😁
I hate the direction this game is heading. started playing formats from 2004-2012 again. much better than the new stuff imo
Power creep is such an awful downwards spiral for this game, I think I might need to start getting into retro to take a break from all this Standard nonsense too 😅
Tldr; Why run weaker, poorly statted cards with the goal of losing slower when you can just run stronger, overstatted cards with the goal of winning faster?
Exactly! This is like the perfect summary for this situation! 💯
Me and my Electivire/Kingambit deck ain't worried 😂
Oh yeah!! Those two have higher HP, so they don't really have to worry about gatekeepers! That's pretty sweet!
I was looking at the Night March era meta, and there literally was not a single good bench damage attack in the Standard format. Now we have a ton of options to make single prizers hard to pull off. Ancient box still has a chance since Roaring Moon has 140 HP, which is just slightly above the bench and extra prize threshold and the +60 HP from the Booster Capsule can even deny some 1-shots early game. Briar is still a big issue, but luckily it doesn't seem to be that popular.
Aside from Dusknoir dragapult is absolutely the worst gatekeeper in my experience, everyone is forced to play sub par 70hp basics, and any deck that has only 60HP or less basics is Fd.
At first, I thought the meta would be fine before Dragapult had access to Crispin, Briar, Sparkling Crystal, and the Dusk line, but now with every few matchups being a Dragapult, it's just unfortunately impossible to play anything with 60 HP or lower, which really sucks.
@@pikiptcg yeah I added like 4 mist e energy to my fav single prize just to work around it lol. But also enamorus V prevents dusknoir which I just learned yesterday too
I haven't played a whole lot so I don't know if this idea would work, but since we have the term "rule box", I reckon it should be used more against rule box Pokémon. Like, what if they made more powerful items like battle compressor, but this time only being able to be used if you only have non rule box Pokémon in your field/ discard.
I like the idea of having more powerful Trainer cards for just single prize decks, I feel like that would give them at least a better shot at being meta! Great idea, mate!
I do hate prize manipulation everywhere, even when playing 2-Prizers. If I could remove any card from the meta i think it would be dusknoir, since it can force your opponent to take prize cards while setting up ANY pokemon to be KOd with a countercatcher + Briar combo.
I totally agree with you! I actually made an entire Twitter thread explaining why Dusknoir is such a bad card for the health of the game, and I also think that Dusk+Catcher+Briar is so disgusting right now lol
I think they tried to help with neutralization zone, but nerfed the thing way too much. I don't know why they though a stadium that walled off rulebox Pokémon was OP enough to make it a single use card. It's already an ACE Spec. There was no need to stop it from being recycled.
1) Stadiums are very easy to bump with other stadiums and Pokémon attacks (and vacuum...see 4)
2) There's really only one or two cards that can get stadiums from the discard
3) Lost vacuum makes it impossible to get back anyhow
4) If single prize decks have to play manaphy/rabsca/mimikyu...why can't they expect multiprize decks to play a single-prize attacker (many do anyways)?
N. Zone would have been a great help to single-prize decks if it was more reliable. I don't see a world in which being able to recycle it would have been too much power.
The other thing they try to do is give Pokémon extra damage to EX or V, but it almost always maxes out at such a low number to be pointless (looking at you, Eeveelutions) or require so much set-up that it becomes an inconsistent mess like Conk, Zoroark, Dipplin, or Klawf(less so).
There is a way to make it work. If they are going to have so many counters to bench protection (4 different gust trainers, gust abilities, cancelling cologne, Dusknoir, etc.) then they should increase bench protection. What about a tool card that protects a certain Pokémon from effects of attacks or damage when on the bench. How about a leafy poncho for single prize Pokémon only? Why are tera Pokémon all EX? They don't need the bench protection in the first place! Let's have a single-prize tera or two.
There are so many solutions.
I think you perfectly addressed the situation here! I agree that single prize decks need WAY more protection to survive in the current meta, and that weak ACE SPEC cards like Neutralization Zone just aren't doing enough. I think seeing cards like Leafy Ponchos to protect against Abilities/effects of attacks would be very helpful to avoid Dusknoir and Hawlucha as well as Dragapult. I also think it would be super cool to see some single prize Tera Pokémon, there's a lot of single prizers that have synergy with Benched Pokemon, so that would be really awesome! I really like your thinking here! 💯
I main ancient Box deck and its being a good old realiable deck, even doe i make it as a present for my brother bday, then i saw the potential and i make another for myself
N i reach PEAK with it but when it comes agaisnt the huge HP meta, i spend a whole night trying to figure how do deal with those n i did succesfully Charizards are no threath for me anymore, AS LONG I DONT BRICK FOR 1 TURN
1 turn without doing anything relevant is a HARD comeback
And dragapult... They r still hunting me in my nightmares i can beat them as well but OMG i need GOD'S luck to do it.
I'm glad you're finding big success with Roaring Moon! It's such a great choice against the 2-prize "beat stick" decks, but I'm hoping that you're able to avoid those pesky Dragapults... that matchup is awful
Literally my answer against those is discard as humanly POSIBLE literally in turn 3 (or 4 if im second in my first turn) i need to deal at least 220 damage and god liepard is so perfect for that (discard a card draw 2)
I mean for charizard, my deck has two rowlets. Datrix clears zard no issue. The problem is as you said pokemon that can snipe and take extra prize cards
Dartrix can be a super satisfying counter to Zard, but I really wish that the fire lizard didn't have access to the Briar/Dusknoir combo, and that's coming from a Zard player! I think it's just super unfair and it suppresses crafty deckbuilders such as yourself from succeeding
As an avid United Wings enjoyer, this is sad to realize.
That being said, I'm having fun trying to figure out how to make the deck work in my local scene. Having the 1 of Rowlet for Charizard is always funny. I want to make use of the Kilowattrel eventually (unlikely but who knows)
It's really unfortunate to see just how oppressed single prize decks are right now, because all the crazy gatekeepers make the playing experience nearly impossible. But, I also love seeing the innovation that creative and truly passionate players such as yourself truly shine! I do like seeing the decks playing 1 Rowlet to OHKO Zards and I think it's super cheeky but also a very smart call! And I really like the idea of sniping with Kilowattrel too, I honestly forgot that card existed! Wishing you the best on your United Wings endeavors, mate!
If you can somehow trap a pokemon in the active and then get Kilowattrel into the active you can easily force a checkmate. I run a single copy, and so far that's been working well enough. It's niche but a nice option. Also can't waif for Perfect Mixer ACE spec!
I am pretty curious why you decided not to discuss ancient box at all. Yes i agree with everything you said that most single prize decks are being gatekept, and this applies to ancient box as well. Each of the cards pointed out applies to it, but doesnt hurt it as bad as say united wings or lost box, but ancient box is a great deck, and unfortunately the only legitimate single prize attacking deck in the format right now, supported by the bulk of the pokemon played in it. Speeding up the game in any way severely impairs the deck since it plays for hitting large numbers in the lategame.
What I feel the game is missing now is meaningful back and forth. When i played the game casually at a young age, we each had a couple ex pokemon but primarily ran single prizers that didnt deal insane damage, which created longer and more back and forth games. With our current competitive meta, in order to keep up, single prizers need to be able to hit huge damage numbers. The game is based entirely around hitting specific damage numbers to take a knockout each turn. This makes single prize vs single prize extremely boring since it is almost always whoever takes first prize wins since the decks are designed to ohko huge 300hp ex pokemon. I think the damage numbers in the game have gotten out of control, and what really drives me to play single prize decks is to slow the game down and have a more interesting back and forth like the game I learned to love, but with cards like dusknoir, hands, and briar, this is becoming impossible to play, single prize or not.
Very well written comment, my friend! Ancient Box (and Klawf, technically speaking) are less impacted by gatekeepers because of their high HP and bulk, like you said. The fact that everything is always going for the OHKO nowadays makes "ramp up" decks really difficult to play, and honestly the game is way less fun sometimes because of it. I think that Creatures needs to take a step back and look at how badly the game has been impacted with gatekeepers and try to build off of that, rather than making bigger HP, bigger damage beat stick cards.
I’ve been trying to make united wings work and it does, until you face anything with dusknoir or briar or turbo or anything good
Honestly, United Wings is the one single prize deck that I just feel really bad for. I never got to play in the Night March era (and Lost March/Mad Party were both not super relevant), but I was super excited when I saw how they released United Wings, only for it to get crushed right out the gate. Nowadays, there are so many ridiculous gatekeepers to the point where it'll never see success...
I believe their releasing a new ace spec soon that allows you to discord a lot a couple cards from your deck but I forget
@@TheBanefulBunker There is! It's called Perfect Mixer, and it allows you to discard up to 5 cards from your deck! That definitely might help United Wings get back on the map!
Sweet, yeah I wasn’t completely sure about it but I will definitely throw that in the deck instead of the ace spec I’m running now
Dammm this video is pure gold
Glad you enjoyed it!! Thank you for watching! 😁
There are good single prize decks. Simple reason why there arent more though is because pokemon tcg pushes new types of cards. Rn theyre focused on tera ex which happens to be a 2 prize type. Question answered.
I think the Aggron from Twilight Masquerade might be a boon to single prize decks. More damage counters on your bench means more damage on his 2nd attack which does 50x the number of pokemon with damage counters. Depending on how the attack is interpreted, ie if it's only pokemon on the bench or the bench and active slot, then the attack maxes out at 250-300 damage which is enough to knock-out a majority of EX/GX/V pokemon
I actually really like the idea of Aggron in this format! You actually can play Area Zero Underdepths (provided you play at least 1 Tera Pokémon) to boost Aggron's damage to do up to 450 damage! You can combine that with Gengars from Lost Origin and Damage Pumps... you might actually be on to something really cool! 🤩
@@pikiptcg Aggron is my favorite pokemon, it's ironic seeing as how he could be a powerhouse in the TCG but in the games its such a pushover with its quad weakness to fighting and ground type moves.
Power creep happened. Granted ancient box moon is probably the most powerful single prize deck in current meta. 2hkoing most ex pokemon in current meta vs 1hkoing most single prizes doesn’t make too much sense.
The tradeoff in the prize race has only gotten worse over time for single prize decks thanks to power creep, you're definitely right! The mere existence of gatekeepers only makes things worse for anything that isn't Ancient Box or Klawf...
There just have to be more people playing gym leader challenge and things like that. Thats a solution that the players themselves could implement.
I feel like there would be a place for a single prize only format, especially if it was officially sanctioned. But I agree that players could easily set up alternative formats if they wanted to play without gatekeepers as well! (Or just play more GLC, my Colorless deck is gathering dust and I really want to play at locals again... 🥲)
Klefki is actually kinda good in united wings.
I actually like the idea of shutting off Abilities like Teal Mask Ogerpon, Fan Rotom, Lumineon V, Squawkabilly ex, and a ton of other setup cards! Honestly, I think that's a lot more valuable than playing a Mimikyu and praying that your opponent can't KO it lol 😁
8:41 imagine forgetting about the ADP
Oh, I didn't forget! I actually made an entirely seperate documentary on ADP in a different video a few months ago!
where is my boy Klawf, don't disrespect my boy like that ;-;
My apologies, mate! To be honest, I completely forgot about Klawf when I was writing the script! If I were to make this video again, I definitely would have made another exception at 6:00 for it, because it's really good right now and it resists basically every gatekeeper!
Klawf is biding his time before a take over
@@pikiptcg understandable, still an amazing video and was a informative watch!
@@gludovic6437 Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I definitely could see a Klawf meta coming up if Pikachu ex becomes popular!
Wow this is such a lovely video. Your voice reminds me of my roommate.
Thank you!!
Vikavolt is a fun one
Having played every gatekeeper card available in the format, I think the only two that should be allowed to stick around are Dragapult and Briar. While Dusknoir is high risk, it's also probably the most toxic of all of them with how rewarding it is. I hate to say this, but I wouldn't want to play a deck without Cursed Blast this meta, nothing else seems fun or worth it. Also, who thought putting that attack on Concealed Cards was a good idea? Radiant Greninja and Iron Hands being basics were massive mistakes.
I think that those two gatekeepers being the only two allowed is super fair. Getting rid of Dusknoir especially makes playing Briar more risky. Now that we're in a format that basically requires you to play Dusknoir, things feel a bit bleak, especially if your deck doesn't have the room/synergy to work with it. And I totally agree that both Radiant Greninja and Iron Hands were both HUGE mistakes for multiple reasons... dang this format really is a mess lol
@@pikiptcg I have no shame in wanting those two gone even as a former Lost Box main
Oh, so you're not going to mention Porygon2's Garbage Attack, huh?
The tools in the lost zone one??
@sullentamp9140 Yes. I build ridiculous home brewed decks. It's only good in expanded, though.
4 Lost Blender
4 Lost Vacuum
4 Colress's Experiment
3 Oranguru V
Air balloons
Survival Brace (wish it was still Life Dew)
Forest Seal Stone
4 Lana's Fishing Rod
4 Rescue Carrier
You get the point, it consistently wrecks Mew Vmax and mostly everything in it's path.
This deck has like 35 gold cards in it lol.
@@johnathansilva2823 I run it in my Rotom Vstar deck as my closing attacker actually, single prizer that hits for 340 end game
Porygon2 is a card I haven't seen in a long time, but it could definitely be the sleeper pick in this format right now! 🤫
Exodia will save the single prize game is all I get from this video
That's unfortunately the situation right now lol 😅
Ancient Box being the only meta relevant single prize is rough. I like it but it gets washed away hard in this Zard infested meta. Its not fun fighting Zard, Pult is frustrating and Miraidon sweeps insanely fast. Id love to see a generation that gets rid of 2 prizers as a whole
It would be cool to see an official format similar to GLC where everything is just single prize decks. I think that would open up a lot more creativity and opportunities for decks that never get to shine in Standard. It's honestly crazy that Ancient Box being the best single prize deck and STILL getting bodied is just really depressing
These would be alot more bearable if cursed blast (dusknior and dusclops) ended your turn after use.
I think that capping Cursed Blast at a once-per-turn effect would be better in my opinion. This makes the Dusk line way less oppressive and easier to telegraph/plan around. But I totally agree with you that Dusknoir is absolutely ridiculous right now
Bro i remember when my friend spent 30€ on gx card and i would destroy the entire deck by dropping a latios use it's gx and then spam 1 prize cards😂
Oh lol I remember Latios GX... it blocked GX attacks like Altered Creation and made single prize decks a lot better! Very smart counter, my friend! I always love winning against my opponent's super expensive cards too lol
Collecting is actually the main reason.
That's definitely one of the core reasons, and 100% the main reason outside of the competitive space. Nobody's going to want to buy a set purely because of regular single prizers, which drives down their collective value in both aspects.
I personally like sending a message, like sure I lost. But I did do a 1000+ dmg with a Lokix, I wanna send a message
That's definitely sending a message lol that's actually insane 😳
@pikiptcg the record is 1450 DMG on a Tera Fighting Greninja, I won the match but Lokix hit em with that Punisher Right Leg
I have tried and tried and tried to get Lokix to work well. I have it paired with Mismagius right now. Also tried to do it with a wall style (behind Mimikyu/Ogerpon). I wish they'd print a dark Nymble. I love Lokix (and the newer B.Bonnet as well), but it just too hard to pull off with the gatekeepers (Dragapult/Dusknoir destroys Lokix and B.Bonnet needs so much energy support that deck space is an issue).
One thing I did do is put Lokix in my Gengar deck as a backup attacker. Love that 500+ damage surprise!
@dannik9932 i just love the grind brother, hitting that big number if you ask me is the best part. It's all about sending a message of doing a big number & callin it a day
@@GrandAdmiralTentales Arceus be praised, amen.
i hope we get pokemon with ability block another ability pokemon that put damage from dusknoir its too op you can combo with catcher and briar
Cursed Blast and Briar happened lol
"there's never been a deck quite like it since"
united wings??
I meant that there's never been a single prize deck that's reached that level of success since, my apologies for the confusion! 😅
@@pikiptcg no worriesss
I know i already commented, but I think they're too afraid too make single prizes good. If they have a good ability, they just make it a two prizer. If they make a good one prizes attacker, they make it a two prize instead.
This is actually one of the best analogies that I've heard, I didn't consider that! If Creatures starts raising the bar for single prizers, then they have to start putting everything through the power creep grinder... That definitely would explain why there have been so many ex Pokémon with powerful Abilities (ex. Squawkabiliy ex)!
Honestly check out marrowack with cubone 151 it hits for 270 and its attack is colorless. Its fighting so it takes out ironhands. But ye dracopukt is a problem.
I saw ForTheWin TCG playing it like last week, I think it's really interesting!! Might have to give it a try, especially with all the Miraidons and Terapagos on the ladder right now!
Isnt the answer to this video just power creep?
Edit: Yes it is, but it is kinda sad to see the answer expanded past that and just how much worse their power creep has gotten while learning nothing from the awful time of tag teams.
The problem started with Tag Teams and just kept getting worse and worse until now, where one or more gatekeeper cards are in literally every meta deck...
I don't like some of the arbitrary rules of GLC but we should have a No rule box format
I completely agree! I think it would help open the door for some new and less appreciated Pokémon to take the spotlight! 😁
tldr: Dusclops/noir happened
No mention of Transformation Zoroark QQ
It was on the list of considerations while I was scriptwriting! Apologies that it didn't make the final cut!
Hmmm yes yes very interesting indeed (I have never played a single match of pokemon TCG and have no idea what any of these sentences mean)
Why was Ancient box just arbitrarily excluded? Its not the best deck going around but it is the best single prize deck running around (Unless you want to argue thats klawf, haven't tested it yet personally). Feels weird to focus on things like lost box and night march that had meta impacts and not discuss why ancient box and snorlax are surviving through all of it. Also I understand excluding snorlax since as a stall deck it plays vastly differently to every other deck in the video.
Ancient Box was excluded because of its resistance/better situation against gatekeepers, which was the main focus of the second half of the video (which was primarily for explaining how smaller HP single prize decks are absolutely shredded by gatekeepers). The reason why I included Night March and pre-SVI Lost Box was because they had a really great meta position due to way less gatekeepers in their respective formats. I definitely agree that a small segment on why Ancient Box and Klawf succeed would've been a great way to round out the video, that's a really good idea that I would add in if I were to redo this video! 😁
@@pikiptcg Yeah those strengths you mentioned would have added a lot to the hope section towards the end of the video. Really appreciate that you took the time to read and respond to my feedback! I really did enjoy the rest of the video, well done.
Because it didn't match the narrative
@@redrazor7903 Thank you for asking about Ancient Box and providing feedback!! It really helps me consider more aspects when making videos like these for the future! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thank you so much for giving it a watch and for reaching out! 🙏
I don't think the single prize decks pointed to are great examples of what makes single prizers fun. Night March is one of the most oppressive decks in the history of the game. Lost Box was hated for its suffocating presence on evolution decks. All three almost exclusively revolve around basic Pokémon as well. ZapBeast success is something to celebrate in the same format that PikaRom started taking 3 Prize cards by turn 2, but it was also a basic deck in a meta that was nearly devoid of single prize evolution (outside of Vileplume stall) due to the effect of cards like Zapdos and Pikachu & Zekrom gatekeeping the success of them.
Better formats to point to would be SUM-LOT, where decks like Granbull, Honchkrow and BuzzGarbWeavile saw use. Even formats deemed hostile to evolutions like 2014 still saw useful Flygon/Dusknoir and Empoleon focused decks, not even to mention the incredible balance between the two present in the EX series formats from 04-07
I definitely should've reached out to you while I was scriptwriting lol 😅
I'm coming to learn (as I'm responding to comments) that Night March was WAY more broken than I thought it was...
ZapBeasts helped contribute to the gatekeeping problem, but in its defense, I think that was the only way it was able to survive. It really sucks that the TEU format basically started the biggest domino effect that lead to single prize decks' downfall. And I agree that I should've done some more digging into evolution-focused single prize decks (even LeonZard would've been a good example!)
In retrospect, a lot of what you've explained really resonates with me, and if I were to make this video again, I'd definitely make sure to ask the expert! Thanks for taking time to explain these older formats to me, I didn't play competitively until around TEU-UNB and I always find the formats you explain super fascinating!
Appreciate your thoughts and explanations as always, mate! 😁
Just use the neutralization zone stadium, it dooes the same thing.
Neutralization Zone doesn't stop Dusknoir, and it falls into the same pitfalls that other Stadiums like Festival Grounds fall into (I gave more details about that at about 15:00). It's a very strong Stadium in a lot of niche scenarios, but it just isn't enough to keep single prizers in meta contention.
Umm, lost box itself was the worst gatekeeper against single prize decks since ADPZacian. Good luck ever evolving anything against a turn 3 lost mine.
Turn 3 that took 20 minutes to get to. That was my biggest problem with LZ...turns were soooo slow!
It basically was so successful that it essentially blocked out any other single prizers from succeeding... Turn 3 Lost Mines were so disgusting
???? we ignoring the era right before scarlet and violet where nothing single prize could ever be played ? let alone any deck besides the 1 meta deck?
The Rainbow Lugia era was honestly literally the worst time for anything except itself, I completely agree with you. However, Lost Box dominated almost any other matchup, so that's why I decided to include it! I pray we never have another Rainbow Lugia situation again lol
Not only amazing Lugia deck, before that palkia had cross switcher/Greninja/shady dealings.
And before that rapid strike urshifu with quick shooting was a menace for a brief period of time there was no bench barrier with urshifu in standard.
But bro might even refer the preco vid era with ADP. You just couldn't bench single price nor support pokemon(dedenne gx or crobat v)
Amazing Lugia was broken, but it only lasted 1 regular set and 1 bonus set due rotation.
