  • Hello and welcome to Train Simulator Classic!
Today we're going to be taking a drive on the Portsmouth Direct Updated v1.4 on one of the scenarios which comes included with the route. We're going to be driving a Class 158 from Cosham through to Portsmouth Harbour on a service which originated from Cardiff.
It's quite a nice little drive if you're strapped for time, and the scenario does also include the return workings as far as Cosham. Unfortunately the scenario creator did make it so you're 15 minutes late, so the scenario is impossible to complete!

Hello again Joe! Thanks for making another nice video showcasing my route. Similarly to the Alton video, I'll now take the time to comment on a few things mentioned in the video.
    - Firstly, I appreciate the timings in the scenario can be a bit of a pain. They're setup this way for two reasons; First being that the timings within the scenario are what give the train priority over certain AI services, as in real life, late trains always get the priority. If I were to go and change these timings it could break the scenario, and with exams starting next week this isn't exactly something I have the time to be doing right now. The second reason being that it is realistic for a late train to 'fail' the service so to speak. There are some people that like this, and some that don't - it's very difficult to please everyone haha.
    - Not long after starting the scenario you checked the map and saw a Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour service behind you, but it had come via Cosham and not the PDL. This is because SWR have an hourly Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour service that goes via Basingstoke which is on the SWML. It turns off at Eastleigh and connects up to the PDL at Hilsea as you did in this scenario. This service is crucial for serving stations like Micheldever, Hedge End and Botley.
    - A little later on in the video you approached Portsmouth & Southsea station. The bay platforms here do accommodate many services. The main ones are Waterloo-Portsmouth & Southsea stopping services. These SWR services go via the PDL and stop at every station along the way, unlike the Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour services that normally only stop at main stations. SWR also have a Portsmouth & Southsea-Southampton Central shuttle service (operates every 60 minutes), which is also essential for serving the Porchester to St Denys line. In terms of Southern, you can get services to London Victoria, and Brighton operated by 377s and services to Littlehampton which were operated by 313s. These bay platforms often are very busy, meaning services often need to share platforms. Here is a good example of this from the cab of a 450: twitter.com/RexKram55112378/status/1595777731937341440
    - Lastly, regarding the GWR drivers at Portsmouth. You're correct in saying there aren't any at Portsmouth. However I do believe there are some at Fratton. When writing that message, I didn't mean 'Portsmouth' as in the station, however I meant it as more of a general term to include the whole area, of which Fratton is included. I understand the confusion this may've caused.
Anyways, nice video once again, Joe.
    Take care. Zain.

I know how old this video is, but since I left Portsmouth to live in Australia, apparently there are now Waterloo services to and from Portsmouth via Fareham / Eastleigh as well as via Havant. its a service that uses the single track from Fareham through the Fareham Tunnel.
Portsmouth to Cardiff (Once an Hourly) used to be Class 50 /73 hauled services with Loco's stationed at Fratton yard, but everything changed when the Fareham branch was electrified.
Yes there are drivers at Portsmouth, at Fratton as its the yards. again back in the Network Southeast days, with the Class 50's on the Cardiff run, after the service terminated at Harbour, another engine would have followed it down, out of Fratton Yards, coupled up to the coaches and become the outbound service. The engine that was then left at Harbour, returned to Fratton yard behind the Cardiff service, where the engine changed crew / driver.
The change of engines has actually been caught on video and is here on UA-cam. First half of the video is service movements at P&S. ua-cam.com/video/Ylh7z73Rcm8/v-deo.html

the platforms 3 and 4 downstairs at P&S are some waterloo services in the busy periods, sometimes a Brighton train but mostly its where the Southampton service goes from as its just a back and fourth service, having lived here for 26 years it gets confusing when you get the extra services during busy periods and they are all over the place in the station

The one coming from Cosham is the London to Portsmouth via Eastleigh

Nice vid Joe! I always see 158958 trundling around the Exeter region, it usually does Barnstaple - Exeter central or sometimes it runs Exmouth - Paignton.

Great video Joe. As a local person form portsmouth the Lower platforms at portsmouth and southsea station is just for storage when trains are not in use. upper platforms are used for trains going to Portsmouth Harbour, London, Brighton and Southampton.

I remember back to the 80's (and before) when the lower platforms were used for the Brighton services and Upstairs was London, Cardiff and Eastleigh. This was way back when it was British Rail, and my Grandfather used to be a ticket checker / collector on the upper tracks, so i used to get allowed on to the platforms as a child, to watch the trains come and go.
There were stabling tracks on the other side (South ?) side of the station.

one of the trains that use a bay platform at Portsmouth and Southsea is a stopping service to Southampton Central, stopping over at every station en route

Nice vid and I am glad you are using RWE. For taking a screenshot, you can always use Ctrl+S and it will take a screenshot without the HUD in. This means you don't have to press F3 whenever you want to take a screenshot. Just a helpful hint if you ever need it.

Thanks HowlinWolf989! That's a great tip for the future... Can't help but miss my F12 key though haha!
I can't believe I've played Train Simulator for so long without RWE, it's phenomenal!

Most trains terminate at Portsmouth Harbour, but SWR local services to Southampton and Southern services to Littlehampton and London Victoria terminate at Portsmouth & Southsea
