Great review! Well beyond the compression helping strumming, it's HUGELY important to keep all the strings very articulate for fingerpicking. Especially fast fingerpicking.
I like how the low cut (high-pass filter) is continuously variable rather than in or out with a couple selectable frequencies. It's good for whether you have a bassist or not.
I'm an upright bassist. Though I like the variability of the high pass filter, I think it's poorly designed. The drop isn't radical enough. For example, I play a Chubby Jackson Kay five string upright, with a low b string. If I adjust the high pass filter to cut out right at the low b fundamental, I can still hear much detail over frequencies below. It's just a small improvement. I end up moving the cut point between e and b to filter out the sub frequencies but then weaken the b string. I've ordered the fdeck model 3 high pass preamp. It's supposed to have a more drastic cut in db below the cut point. Long story short, I don't think the fishman has a true high pass filter, just bass reduction below the selected point.
@@arvidlystnur4827 You just want a steeper slope. All EQs have specs for the slope/curves. It's expressed in db/octave. Sounds like you didn't know what specs to look for for your purpose the first time. Saying the PPEQ doesn't have a high pass filter because it doesn't have the specs you want isn't accurate.
@@arvidlystnur4827 How am I "redefining what a high pass filter is" by stating that different filters have different specs? If you use digital plugins, you know that you can often set the slope to whatever you want. I'm not making any statements about how good the PPEQ is for bass, just that the low cut control is actually a high pass filter.
Is the volume also for the balanced output? Or is it just for the amp output? That is, is there a way to manage the gain and volume sent to the sound system on the pedal?
Cool review! So, I guess the guitar already has a preamp on its own (on top of the pickup), right? I mean, there is no problem to connect it to an external preamp?
This is a damn good unit! I got confused whith this until i realised you HAVE to download and find the actual Auras that fit YOUR guitar. A nice thing to use is the Aura software. I downloaded and sortet out three sets 16 Auras each and selected from that. Now i got 15 Auras in the user bank that sound amazing, just different. But they all sounds really great! It all took about two hours to sort out. Now i use them with a little bit compressor but eq all set to zero, and guitars eq set to zero. Just amazing!
Peter Hermansson You have this eq confused with the Fishman Spectrum Aura. This is a eq pedal and DI. I have the Aura and while it's a good pedal the eq is lacking the tunable mid frequency of this pedal. Because of that I have to use a separate eq on my Taylor 814ce.
+Alberto Ojeda Rubio PRE would mean, that the xlr output behaves only as a DI box, no eq-ing, only through the jack output. This means, that you are using your eq for your own amp, but when your signal goes to the PA as well, you are sending the original signal to the mixer guy (so he has to process it). With POST, you are sending your signal after it is altered by your settings through the XLR output.
Does the fishman accepts stereo inputs? I want to use a splitter for my stereo reverb. My chain is: acoustic guitar - platinium - stereo reverb (with splitter) - back to the platinum (as a DI) - PA. Thanks!
Hi - The Platinum Pro EQ is a mono unit, so no stereo ins or outs. If you wanted to go stereo into the PA, after your reverb you could use two of them, or you'll need to find a preamp or use a mixer that can go stereo. - Teja Gerken
@@diego404 I wonder if you actually did this. It would be pricey, but give you the option of tweaking the two channels differently. One maybe more mid scooped and one with more mid range. Or, you could say boost just one for leads to give some stage dynamics. Or compress just one channel. It would be interesting to play around with the setup.
@@midi510 Hi! I didn't buy another platinium, but I still use the one i've bought. I currently have another channel where I upload pure covers (where I use platinium) although I think that if I put a link here it will not appear
Teja, So I tried this unit yesterday, and honestly was a bit confused. I ran a 1/4 out from my guitar to the 1/4 in, adjusted my EQ settings, ran the DI out to the soundboard, which then sends an Aux signal to the monitors....anyway, I could not get the volume control to work and everything seemed really hot. I tried it pre and post next to the DI output but it didn't seem to make a difference. Any thoughts?
In case you're still trying to figure this out four years later, use the trim knob on the right side to lower the hot signal and the volume knob works on the 1/4" output not the DI.
Why is it no one ever explains exactly how to setup using the effects loop...just says it has an effects loop..every video I've watched just gets brushed over.
Simplicity = acoustic guitar. What can I do to make things complicated, oh how about some electronics gadgets that add 100 knobs and make the guitar so it no longer sounds like an acoustic guitar.
If you're sitting in your living room or around a campfire, it's a simple thing. If you're sharing that simple guitar through some sort of recording, it is no longer simple. Like "unplugged" albums are anything but unplugged. If they were unplugged there would be no recording. If you're on stage with a PA or recording an album or video, there's a whole complicated chain of electrical activity, whether or not you want to be aware of it. A device like this just gives you control of that electrical activity.
Doesn't sound good at all. I tried one, and it's garbage. Bought a BBE Acoustamax, which is the best preamp I've ever used. Built-in pickups tend to sound like crap. I went to a Sunrise pickup like real professionals use.
Just bought one of these on the strength of this absolutely excellent review - no silly background music and clear logical demo - many thanks!
Excellent device review! Covered entire device. Clearly communicated each feature operation and value.
Great review and a very concise way of explaining boosting or cutting frequencies.

One of the best product demonstrations I have ever seen. Thank you!
Wonderful demo and tutorial, there's not one word that not needed.. thanks.
Very interesting and useful information included in this review.
Great demo! Thank you. Informative and concise at the same time. Thumbs up.

Sounds like you're redefining what a high pass filter is.
If it's a high pass filter it sucks, and I'm sure other bassists would agree.

Very useful information. Thanks for posting.
Great video and explanations! Thanks so much - well done 👏
The compressor is good for going back and forth between strumming and leads or fingerstyle.
Very useful!

Hi can it be connect directly to any powered speaker without mixer?
Great tutorial - though the use of the mid tone and frequency seems inverse to the short video on the Taylor site for this product.
What's the piece of music at the end?
Is the input trim adjusting the impedance?
so its for acoustic instruments?

Larry Dering yes im sorry i see that now! Aura is still a damn good unit 😂
So is this the same as the Aura?????
will it work same with violin also?
Someone did a review and said it worked just as good on violin, yes
Can u plz make a small review with violine.
Why do need external eq for fishman which has eq controls on the amp. Do any of their products off this functionality in an amp
hello, so... when you use the platinum preamp what eq do you have to use in the onboard preamp?
Gentlemen, James Taylor runs a Tonebone preamp right into a Spectrum Aura DI. Would Platinum make some difference replacing this Tonebone?
hi, can you explain with more details the PRE and POST section of the unit please??
