The neck collar is THE Symbol of Metal music in Japan. It comes from X Japan's drummer Yoshiki. He would headbang so hard when he played that he damaged his neck. So his doctors required him to wear a neck collar.

And with that, the transformation of Suzuka from a jpop idol to Su-metal, queen of metal, was completed. Just a casual 16th birthday party, right? I had the pleasure seeing that song live earlier this month twice and the song hasn’t lost any of its power to hype up the crowd right at the beginning of their set.

That was fun. I think you have all the explanations and translations etc (I don't think anybody mentioned yet that in between the "BABYMETAL Desu/death", "Su-metal desu" etc the growls and the crowd were also spelling out "B_A_B_Y_M_E_T_A_L").
What a 16th birthday party - and any self-respecting metal crowd would surely be jumping up and down chanting "DEATH DEATH DEATH" while the lead singer of the band is crucified on stage.
I saw a reactor once describing going to work the next day and telling your colleagues "I went to see a concert last night and at the end they crucified the lead singer while everybody chanted "DEATH DEATH DEATH" and then they decapitated what looked like a statue of Mary."
"Wow, who did you see, was it some Scandinavian devil worshipping Death or Black Metal band?"

Babymetal Death always requires a little explanation to make sense of. It is the first track on the first album, and is usually performed as the opener for concerts, though on this particular occasion, it was the closer due to the special occasion. It serves as an introduction to the band in both situations due to the double meaning of their use of the word "death". Because Japanese does not have dental fricatives vocalisations (language sounds that use your teeth) like "Vee" or "Th", Japanese people often find English words that have these sounds hard to pronounce, so they often end up substituting "th" with ス(su). As a result, when Babymetal say "death" it ends up coming out as "desu" (this was especially true in the early days when their English skills were not as good as they are now). In Japanese "desu" (pronounced "dess") means "I am" or "it is" (among other meanings), so when someone introduces themselves, they will say (for example) "Su-metal desu" ("I am Su-metal"). Thus, in the song, the word "death" is also serving as the word "desu", and thus forms an introduction, with each member of the group announcing their name and saying "death" at the same time (which is pretty metal).
Babymetal like to use these kinds of plays on words, and in fact, their name is one such play on words. The name Babymetal comes from a word play on the Japanese name for heavy metal ヘビーメタル (hebimetaru). Babymetal is written as ベビーメタル (bebimetaru), so you can see that it is written almost identically, except for the dakuten mark on the first character, and when said aloud, also sounds very similar. When Kobametal came up with the idea of Babymetal, he thought of it as the birth of a new style of metal music, and Babymetal was the name he came up with to express this idea of a new metal being born that is a descendant of the metal that has come before, but is also completely new in its own right.
This particular performance is full of symbolism. The neckbrace, which features prominently in Babymetal iconography and lore, is a tribute to Yoshiki the drummer and pianist of legendary Japanese visual kei band X Japan, who are one of Babymetal's biggest inspirations. The statue is a reference to Metallica's "And Justice For All" tour; Metallica is also a great inspiration for Babymetal

Legend 1997 had an storyline behind it as the whole concert was an allegory about BABYMETAL's transition from a J-pop idol group sub-unit to a legit metal band. And this was just the final and necessary number with Su-metal leaving her past life as human and idol to reborn as a metal goddess.

You are right, the whole Legend 1997 concert traced Babymetal's transition from J-Pop sub-unit to an authentic force in the metal genre. It was simply magnificent from start to finish.
We are able to look at the concert with 20/20 hindsight at how the show can be viewed as a window, looking out on things to come. I love how Babymetal started and ended the show with heavy reference and respect to western faith systems.
The intro to the concert was backed by a choral take on Shubert's "Ave Maria" which, in itself, is a prayer to the Virgin Mary. And then, lo-and-behold, who should show up in the background for the final song of this concert? Legend 97 is a masterpiece for those who appreciate Babymetal's journey.

I know one of these was mentioned, but the other one hasn't. When the band kicks in, the guitar riff you are hearing is straight from One, from Metallica's "...And Justice For All" album, from 1988. Coincidentally, during their tour in support of that album, they had a statue of Lady Justice (they named her "Doris) on stage, and at the end of the show, the head of Doris fell off. The end of the song is an homage to that.
The neck brace was already explained. The crucifixion.. there is no religious aspect built into this. What they are basically doing here is that this same year, Su had graduated from the J-pop Idol group the three girls were in, called Sakura Gakuin (basically, she aged out of the group). So since she was no longer part of that, she decided to sacrifice that identity, to be reborn as a metal goddess. Hence, that version of Su being crucified. And seeing how Alice Cooper loved to put on a theatrical show, this is definitely a nod to him.
The Desu/Death wording has already been explained as well. It's a play on words, but what a fantastic metal way to introduce yourself. In fact, on their first tour, this was their opening song. And it's no joke that this is the opening song on their first album.
    Oh, by the way.. #notacult

    • @lencooke944
      @lencooke944 Рік тому

Oh, athlonen, you are almost there, but not quite. Yes, the other Metallica nod is the riff and drums from One, but you are agonizingly close with the Alice Cooper nod. A hint, one of the two Alice Cooper references are linked to one of the Metallica nods, and the other is linked to Su in this performance.

@@lencooke944 If I remember right, there was a show or two back in the day where Cooper simulated being guillotined.. Now the actual act of having his head taken off isn't the nod that Babymetal is doing, but the entire aspect of putting on a show for shock entertainment value is. The concept of crucifying a 16 year old girl at a metal show? That would definitely qualify as shocking..

The Japanese word "desu" (です) is a copula (= to be). The Eastern Japanese almost drop "u" of this word, so the word "desu/des" sounds like "death". And someone started writing "DEATH" instead of "です" (desu). It makes sense only where the Japanese word "desu" is expected to come. The title "BABYMETAL DEATH" means only "We are BABYMETAL." No relation to the death itself.
I'm not sure of its origin, but I saw long before such a character as a vampire or a death metal singer in a comic and all his "です" (desu) were replaced with "DEATH" to emphasize his character. With such an air, it works well. Without such an air, it probably doesn't work.
There is a genre named "Death Metal". The sound of this tune seems to fall within that genre, and the lyric writer may have put many "DEATH"s to emphasize the Death-Metal-ness. It might be alright to use many "DEATH"s without thinking of death if some of Death Metal bands also chose their style just to differentiate themselves rather than driven by the feeling about death. But I don't know the Death Metal well.
    MAKUHARI MESSE:-
Makuhari Messe (幕張メッセ) is a Japanese convention center outside Tokyo, located in the Mihama-ku ward of Chiba city, in the northwest corner of Chiba prefecture. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, it is accessible by Tokyo's commuter rail system. Makuhari is the name of the area, and Messe is a German language word meaning "trade fair".
    •Owner: Makuhari Messe, Inc.
    •Opened: 9 October 1989.
    •Expanded: October 1997.
•Classroom-style seating: 304 (International Conference Room).
    •Banquet/ballroom: 1,600 (Convention Hall).
•Theatre seating: 7,860 (Makuhari Event Hall).
Makuhari Messe is close to Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, and to Chiba prefecture's black sand beaches. It is accessible from Kaihimmakuhari station on the Keiyō Line of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The center is the host of the annual Tokyo Auto Salon (modified car show, in January), the biennial Tokyo Motor Show (in October), the annual Tokyo Game Show (video game hardware and software exhibition, in September), the annual Jump Festa (manga, anime, and video game exposition, in December), and the biannual Wonder Festival (toys, scale figures, and garage kits exposition, in February and July). The venue was host to several Nintendo Space World events.
It will be the venue for certain sports during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The neck brace is an homage to Yoshiki, the drummer of the band X-Japan who injured his neck head-banging. The statue falling apart is a Metallica reference. Yoshiki, and the Japanese performers SixTones, milet, LiSA, and Babymetal, and their overseas guests Sarah Brightman, and Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen together performed Yoshiki''s song Endless Rain on NHK"s big New Years show in 2021.

Rakjr6, that would have been a wonderful NHK performance, is it on UA-cam? Oh, and who won in 2021, the boys or the girls?
And yes, the neck brace is homage to Yoshiki, and you got the second one, Metallica, with the Suedonna in BM Death and Lady Justice falling apart in And Justice for All. But there is at least two other Easter Eggs in that performance, I wonder what they were?

I also avoided Babymetal since I heard their first 3-4 songs in around 2012-2014, when they were still in the idol group Sakura Gakuin. After a while I kind of wanted to hear the first song again because I remembered it had an uplifting vibe. Then I started to wonder what other people thought of them, so I started watching reaction videos. I never stop since then. In short, I found them because of the idol element, then avoided them because of the metal element, and now I follow them because they are Babymetal.

The lyrics are a play on words. Death sounds like the Japanese word Desu. Because the U is usually silent and Japanese people can't usually say the th sound in death.
It's kind of a meme to say Desu with a big U. 'I am bad at Japanese.' It's an inside joke among weebs.
Desu means (subject) is/are. It's a common introduction. If you said 'Thamesman desu' it would mean 'we are the Thamesman'. It can also be singular or be used on objects. It's very versatile. Pencil desu = here is a pencil. Babymetal desu = We Are Babymetal. Su-Metal Desu = I am Su-metal.

Just FYI, BABYMETAL will be touring with Dethklok in the US beginning in late August and stretching through mid-October. The US tour ends with two shows in Los Angeles on October 11th and 12th respectively. So, if you want to see them live, you'll have your chance soon. Better get tickets soon though because some dates, particularly in larger cities, have already sold out.
By the way, BABYMETAL and Sabaton have both played at the Warfield in San Francisco. I saw Sabaton there opening for Nightwish, and saw BABYMETAL there with Avatar opening for them. It's cool that they are playing together in Europe though.
Unfortunately, no San Francisco date is scheduled for the upcoming tour, but they are playing fairly close at the Aftershock festival in Sacramento. I saw them at Aftershock in the past, but they only did seven songs - honestly, festival performances are not my favorite. I think it would be a much better choice to attend one of their L.A. shows for the upcoming tour.
